Mynock's Den
Приєднався 18 лип 2012
My name is Taras, and I like to make stuff. I started making props in 2012 as a hobby, and with the help of the prop and cosplay communities taught myself the skills and techniques necessary to make some pretty interesting things at home. I created my website mynocksden.com to share the methods and techniques I’ve learned (and continue to learn), documenting both successes and failures with the hopes of helping other DIY enthusiasts like myself make cool things at home.

Mynock's "Cork" Texture Paint Job Tutorial
Mynock here coming to you with a short video explaining how I achieve the textured paint jobs on some of my helmets. Here are the steps mentioned in the video:
00:24 Step 1: Wash resin cast with acetone;
00:35 Step 2: Apply Rust-Oleum Stone texture spray paint and let dry for an hour;
01:14 Step 3: Apply Rust-Oleum or Krylon spray paint of whatever colour will closely match your final paint job colour ("matte black" is a good choice here, too); allow to dry for a few days until texture is hard enough to sand;
01:50 Step 4: Dry-sand the texture down as flat as possible using a sanding sponge or sand paper (320-400 grit) without exposing the resin underneath, then brush off dust;
02:10 Step 5: Repeat steps 2,3,4 until you are happy with the texture;
02:42 Step 6: Airbrush the helmet with final colours, and seal it up with Rust-Oleum/Krylon matte clear coat and let dry for a day;
02:56 Step 7: Using a sharpened popsicle stick, toothpicks or a plastic scraper, begin to add battle damage by simply scraping off the textured paint in places that make sense to you, right down to the resin surface;
03:29 Step 8: Hand paint the areas inside the scrapes you made in Step 7 with dark grey/metallic colours using thin paints that flow well (Tamiya thinned with a little bit of water works well enough);
04:25 Step 9: Weather the paint job with Tamiya powders, Antiquing Rust Set, and acrylic washes before sealing it up with Tamiya flat clear-coat.
Thanks for watching!

Building a Space Satellite Model
Переглядів 3,5 тис.6 років тому
This was a project I completed for a company who hired me to design and build an original non-functional space satellite model to use as a display prop at trade shows. Drawing inspiration from the Voyager spacecraft and the various existing satellites that are currently flying overhead, I designed the model in 3D, and manufactured it using a combination of 3D printing, laser cutting and resin c...

Bro is a genius
Is this still available?
Genius.
this is literally what I need for mask I was panicking on how im gonna get the mask on. Actually a life saver
Would this method work for the two piece sith acolyte helmet?
Dude I sincerely love you bro. And before I go. What Velcro is that and what is that stretchable strap called?
11 years ago is crazy
Awesome design
Most Glorious.
It's for me ??? Thank you so much 😁
NAZI Stuff.!
Yo! Is there an updated version of this???
jesus
i know its been a while since your last upload but could you mod a mandalorian bucket the same way you did your stormtrooper?its like the best way to mod a cosplay helmet and i plan to use the same method for my master chief helmets
That is a very nice finish on that model. The wings falling of sounds pretty horrible. I have a bottle of that Tamiya panel line dark brown . I've not used it for reason it warns about affecting the plastic. I wonder does it come with a light kit for the engines? I don't have this model yet but maybe soon. I have 6 Y- Wings, 5 X-Wings, 3 Tie Fighters. Why that many? Just a habit of collecting and the thought of doing the different versions I suppose. That's great work for a first time as you say. From George down under.👍🇭🇲🦘🐨.
I just starts making this Armor and would love some recommendations on finishing this armor thanks
What colour scheme did you paint this with as I have this kit but still debating which grey is best for the tie fighter ?
I’ve built this kit late last summer and went with tamiya surface primer light grey. I went with grey because that’s the color they were in episode 4.
yo! how much you want to modify my helmet?
Seriously - all congrats to you, you not only had a vision for it, you were able to stick with it to the final. Lots of ppl don’t realize how much time and effort goes into this type of build - damn, great work!!
Great work! Love that you don’t stop once it’s printed and instead you cold cast them. Tons of work, with tons if high value payoff! Awesome!
Super interesting video, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'd love to see the next casting video!
Do you have a video of what kind of padding you use? Love your quick and easy to follow videos
so simple and easy, thank you
ROFL the combination of the badass armor design and the funny walk killed me. :D
Where do you get the Velcro and strap
Just look it up and easy to find industrial strength, literally just looked myself
Trying to figure out how to do a similar thing to a Mandalorian(Deathwatch/Journeyman protector) helmet. Great content wonderful project. Very helpful!
I'd love for someone to do this for my scout trooper helmet 😂
I’m not an experienced cosplayer/builder. But one of the issues that I’m faced with is triple digit weather. How does the Velcro do with high temperatures? I made my son a tmnt shell with hot glue without thinking and it’s started to fall apart towards the end… I just don’t want to go through that again.
sucks that you didn't make any templets for this
Thank you so so much for sharing your ways. This is exactly what me and my wife want to do for our mandolorians
I have a question though how well would this work on a 3d printed PLA helmet.
congrats, there should be more mandalorian retro crusaders out there
Can you tell me what brand you use? I see the official Velcro brand has a heavy duty but then I see some other brands that say "industrial strength". I did a cosplay mask for my nephew's senior prom and I need to make sure it stays
The red and metal helmet pictured here at 3:45 has a metal finish (on the center part of the helmet and visor area) and I was wondering how you achieve this look?
Man I wish you still sold stuff
Great work thx for sharing. I'm working on my Reforged Kylo Ren helmet and not sure if I should do the same thing for it. Not sure what is movie accurate. Hard to tell from the photos and movie.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing
You are the goat. So good!
I have been waiting all my 3D life to see this.... Can’t thank you enuff...
Got any vids on adding weathering/washes? I like the rusty effects you get in some of the recesses.
Not yet, but I’ll be doing some tutorials on this also!
Those are some great techniques! I love that the paint filling it in can create the different bumpy levels, it seems like great control.
Awesome Job! Thank you very much for the Detailed and clear instructions on how to achieve those beautiful results of yours! Greetings from Bavaria!
Where do you get the silicone molds at? Do I have to just get the material and put it on the plastic helmets I already have? 9r can I buy the silicone mold itself? Where do I find some?
Great job, pal!
I didn't know that, thank you for the advice. Video made 5 years ago but is still helping people today, this is timeless advice. I'm gonna buy Velcro for masks!
plain old velcro -- as long as it has the self-adhesive backing
Great Tip!, I was looking for different methods for my cosplay
What a truly awful overly complex way to do it. Instead- 1. Fill one half completely full and remove the air bubbles. 2. When the first half has started to set and won't run mix up another batch and fill the second half so it's fractionally over flowing. 3. Immediately put the first half onto the second half.
Probably would have shown better, if you wore white under the black armor.
Wondering about this in 90 shore urethane…
