  • Mynock here coming to you with a short video explaining how I achieve the textured paint jobs on some of my helmets. Here are the steps mentioned in the video:
    00:24 Step 1: Wash resin cast with acetone;
    00:35 Step 2: Apply Rust-Oleum Stone texture spray paint and let dry for an hour;
    01:14 Step 3: Apply Rust-Oleum or Krylon spray paint of whatever colour will closely match your final paint job colour ("matte black" is a good choice here, too); allow to dry for a few days until texture is hard enough to sand;
    01:50 Step 4: Dry-sand the texture down as flat as possible using a sanding sponge or sand paper (320-400 grit) without exposing the resin underneath, then brush off dust;
    02:10 Step 5: Repeat steps 2,3,4 until you are happy with the texture;
    02:42 Step 6: Airbrush the helmet with final colours, and seal it up with Rust-Oleum/Krylon matte clear coat and let dry for a day;
    02:56 Step 7: Using a sharpened popsicle stick, toothpicks or a plastic scraper, begin to add battle damage by simply scraping off the textured paint in places that make sense to you, right down to the resin surface;
    03:29 Step 8: Hand paint the areas inside the scrapes you made in Step 7 with dark grey/metallic colours using thin paints that flow well (Tamiya thinned with a little bit of water works well enough);
    04:25 Step 9: Weather the paint job with Tamiya powders, Antiquing Rust Set, and acrylic washes before sealing it up with Tamiya flat clear-coat.
    Thanks for watching!

    Those are some great techniques! I love that the paint filling it in can create the different bumpy levels, it seems like great control.

    The red and metal helmet pictured here at 3:45 has a metal finish (on the center part of the helmet and visor area) and I was wondering how you achieve this look?

    Great work thx for sharing. I'm working on my Reforged Kylo Ren helmet and not sure if I should do the same thing for it. Not sure what is movie accurate. Hard to tell from the photos and movie.

    i know its been a while since your last upload but could you mod a mandalorian bucket the same way you did your stormtrooper?its like the best way to mod a cosplay helmet and i plan to use the same method for my master chief helmets

    I have a question though how well would this work on a 3d printed PLA helmet.

    Got any vids on adding weathering/washes? I like the rusty effects you get in some of the recesses.
