The Unorthodox Nurse
Приєднався 1 вер 2016
I'm a mom of 3 boys, wife to a husband I've been with for 24 years and a nurse. Nursing is what I do and it's not who I am. I've documented my whole journey through nursing school, as an older adult, changing careers. Now here I am navigating the aftermath of it all. You'll see a few things on this channel as I learn and grow. My life is always life-ing so you'll never know what I'll do or say. Hopefully you'll find this channel useful, but most of all I hope you find it motivating.

35 & I graduate my LVN to RN when I’m 36, May 2025 🙏🏽❤️
@ashleyreyna9100 - you go girl!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 You got this! Only a few more months. I was also a May graduate counting down those last months but I love that you are already a nurse. That definitely helps in the program. Good luck to you on your journey!!!
Please define um nurse
@d.banjamin1108 - Utilization Management
Hi just found your page. My 43 birthday just passed and I just applied to a ASN program for fall. Great video!
@EmcXperience- I love this!!! Praying you get accepted! I know how nerve wracking that can be!! ❤️❤️
Thank you so much for the information.
You're very welcome.
Good luck! It's a toxic profession filled with women. Hopefully a mature person has learned the skills to deal with the shenanigans that WILL be encountered. It isn't a profession for the weak. If someone is truly a caring person that's great profession. Unfortunately, like teaching it is quite problematic.
So glad this came up in my timeline! I’m about to start school to work in the medical field and I’m 50!
@Bknycharlie - That is FANTASTIC and extremely inspiring. I love it. Good luck to you on your journey🙏🏾❤️👏🏾👏🏾
I also turned 50 and this just inspired me. I’m seriously considering
The algorithm knows me everything is right up my alley thank you
You motivated me.
@nursehaji - mission accomplished! Thanks for watching❤️
@ Keep up the excellent job. When your schedule allows, can you make a video on the insurance companies that are hiring? Thank you so much!
@nursehaji - absolutely! I'll add it to the list. Be on the look out for it in the near future. Thank you for the video suggestion! Very much appreciated!
@theunorthodoxnurse Thank you so much! We appreciate your hard work.
Keep up with your videos . This is my first time seeing your video. It inspired me!
@brendawilliams5190- I'm glad it inspired you! I will definitely keep up the vids. Thank you for watching!!
This was great!!
@valedakeys1661 - thank you and thanks for watching! ! 🙏🏾❤️
A great team, that part!

If you’re going to school for your bachelors then a lot of those programs are online and you’re able to work at your own pace. Anyone ready to start the bsn program?
Are there usually any remote positions for new grad nurses, or do they all require some bedside experience?
@iwuese1- great question that is often asked on this channel. I recommend at least having a year of bedside before applying BUT you never know. If a company is desperate they may hire you. Just apply anyway. I just think you'd increase your chances with a year or more bedside experience if you have no UM experience at all. My opinion but I believe anything could happen
You are right about this being a good field. You are right about having 2 jobs!I have been in the UM and CM Field for about 15 years. I have found that more recently, the salaries for remote positions seems to be getting lower. Even with years of experience, I have found companies that insist on paying at the lower end of the advertised salary range.However, in person roles for UR and CM at the hospital seems to pay higher more consistently.
@carole3877 - thank you for watching and your insight!!!! As far as salaries for remote positions getting lower and lower, I personally haven't experienced that. It's possible though depending on the employer. As far as in person roles such as bed side, paying more that is right. However, it allowed me to have one job and be dead tired and other negatives. The trade off on working from home and having a lower pay ( by 200 dollars) for me was well worth it, if I can snag more than one remote positions within the same working hours, be able to save a whole pay extra paycheck or fatten my retirement with it putting me in a position to retire earlier, , have less stress, be able to travel while working and see my family....I'd trade it any day. I have one job now and am able to more than make it on just my salary alone with 3 kids. So I guess it just depends where you work maybe. I was also able to negotiate my salary as well. Fair assessment though.
@@theunorthodoxnurse Thanks so much! Have you ever considered offering 1: 1 consulting regarding this? Also, I edited my response to clarify I was referring to in person UR and CM roles such as in the hospital setting
@carole3877- no worries! No I haven't thought about consulting at all but maybe I'll consider in the future. For now, just being helpful on a micro level or any way I can is my goal for now.
I am so glad I came across your video today! Thank you so much, this is a very informative video. I'm 50 and I will be getting my BSN next month. I have about 6 months of experience working in Hospice and I have noticed that most of the UM nurse positions require 2-3 years of experience. Is there a work around this or is this a must? Did you work bedside for 2 years prior to applying for these positions?
@iwuese1- great question! I posted a video today that talks about how to look for a UM job. In it I look at a job that says "or equivalent experience". That phrase is your golden ticket to getting past the years requirement. I have been a bedside nurse for less than a year before snagging a work from home job. I had equivalent experience not as a nurse working for our states medicaid program. So that helped. Try to work for an insurance company prior to becoming a nurse and that could help. Whether you have the years needed to apply or not, just apply. Sometimes they are desperate to fill the position and really it is trainable. I would at least have a year of bedside experience under my belt before applying if you have no equivalent experience. Thanks for watching!!
@@theunorthodoxnurse Ok thank you. I just saw your reply. I will go back and watch the rest of that video. Thanks
Awesome video. Thanks for showing that there is hope
@carole3877- you're very welcome. ❤️
I’m 50 tomorrow. I have been a nurse for 2 years and I have moved around. Now I’m trying to get a UM, or Case Manager. These companies want experience beyond two years. I need some advice please! Anyone can be taught how to do a job. I feel I have enough experience to do theses jobs and I can learn anything..
@keishamccray8404 - I have a video coming out today that talks about how to get a work from home job / UM job. If you have the time and feel like it, take a look and see if it's helpful. I also have another video about the best answers to interview questions you might also find helpful. If not helpful, drop questions in the comment section of those vids and I can answer for you or make a video that addresses them. Thanks for watching and I'll be praying you find the job you want soon!! 🙏🏾❤️
Hey cutie! I remember when I was in nursing school at 20, we had students in their 40s, and they were so sweet and were more determined than other students because of their goals, age, and wisdom. I have now been a nurse for 9 years and I am 31 and switching to medical school. Through God, anything is possible. The time is going to pass anyway, so might as well do something that want to do. One of my favorite quotes is, "What would life be if we never had the courage to attempt anything?" - Vincent Van Gough. Best of luck to you all !
@AjahChanell-p71 - I love this!!! You go girl! Much faith to you on your medical school journey!!! Praying for good outcomes!! 🙏🏾❤️
54 years old and nursing in Canada since 1994. Studying to take my NLEX RN in US. So yeah, this is like a late career move for me🙂
@andreajacobs4760 - Very inspiring!!!
I'm 58 currently in an LPN to RN program. Graduation is Jan 2026. And then I'll do BSN online💪🏾
@chocchip103tee - Sounds like a plan! 58 years strong! Good luck to you!
@theunorthodoxnurse thk u!!😉
My graduation date is 2027 and I'm 52, I was told there is no age limit!!
I’m glad you mentioned forgetting skills, this was one of my concerns when I see these sort of positions. Thank you thank you thank you for sharing all of this information I’ve worked from home before just in customer service and sales and I’ve been interested in working from home in nursing I was wondering how it would work having two jobs…. Very informative and it makes me feel I can do it, I don’t know anyone who holds this sort of position so thank you again !!!
@feefee4234 - you are very welcome!! I'm glad it helped ❤️
Can anyone give me advice with Capella vs WGU? Is anyone attending any of those universities?
@nostalgictarot5744 - I attended Capella and will be making a video in the near future on my experience. There are other nursing channels as well that have talked about their experience as well. I would check those out too. It helped me to look at a number of different channels when making my decision.
I just finished my LPN program 12/12/24 and Im 39 never give up
@Lovely-33a4 - That is awesome!!!! I know that felt good after all that hard work! Congratulations!!!
I’m almost 50 and will be graduating from an LPN program in October 2025, then straight into BSN program 🤭🩺
@sistersofvirtue5506 - Very inspiring!!! I love this!
49 and doing my pre reqs, thanks for this 💐
@GGFuturenurse- you are very welcome. You got this!!!! Good luck on your journey! ❤️
Right on time video. Being a new older nurse with a young family can be challenging. I love to draw too, I pray I figure out how to balance it all .
@mercyegbulem503 - it certainly is challenging! Happy to meet another person that loves art!!
On point 100000% : Staying mentally active, participate in study groups , discover your learning style are essential. I'm 58 - This is so inspiring! Thank you! We CAN strike a work/school/life balance - it's not impossible! I couldn't do it without faith and Jesus and support such as yourself!
@mommaria1968 - You're very welcome! And Amen to that🙏🏾!!! ❤️❤️
55 and just started taking prereqs. I suppose in the grand scheme of things...nursing does not have a stop age requirement (forced retirement). Just switched from the tech sector... after being laid off 2x - I am not waiting to get laid off again.
That makes complete sense and a smart decision in my opinion. I remember my prereq days. If you need motivation or inspiration take a look at some of my old videos. I documented what I could do I could look back at it someday. A few years from now you'll be all done with an RN or LVN behind your name. Good luck to you! ❤️ Very inspiring!
Thanks for sharing. 47 yr old here Please continue. Newbie, graduating in 2026. Loved your content
👏🏾👏🏾 Thank you!!
Love this content I went back to school at 44 now I'm 50
Love love love this!
Do my prerequisites now, should be done next semester. The only thing is the nursing schools in my area have no set schedule, I still need to work FT while going to school.
It's hard that you have to work. It could possibly help to think of it as a temporary situation and once you're done with nursing school things will improve. The things we have to do to get to where we want to go ... Well worth it. Good luck to you
@@LisaF-nu5wq Good for you! Do more research, you may be able to do some of your courses online.
I’ll lay it out: I’m a freshman in college and I love healthcare and medicine and I’m willing to spend money and invest time. I’m wondering if I should become a CRNA or a doctor? I’m very financially driven and want financial freedom. I know that becoming a physician takes a much longer time but that isn’t a problem, so long as the additional time invested is worth it.
@brittneyking4284- makes sense. I hope that your journey as you go about completing your courses lead you to where you would find satisfaction both financially and passion-wise! Good luck to you. We need more people passionate about healthcare like you are. ❤️
@ thank you and I love your content!
Thank you for posting this! I’m 40 and have been in accounting and finance for most of my career and I’m starting the program. I have been really doubting myself because of my age and making this drastic change in my life.
@vibrantnubian27 - congratulations!!! 🎉 I was right there with you with the doubt and nervousness prior to the program. My carpool buddy started at 40 as well with me. You will do great and the feelings are perfectly normal. Two years from now you'll have that RN attached to your name. Good luck to you! 🙏🏾❤️
Do you have an adn or bsn
@Pinthalfounce - I got my ADN first and then my BSN. This channel started out as documenting my whole nursing school journey. Thanks for asking.
@ thank you for replying. I’ve been an Lpn since 2010 and now I will be done with my adn in may of this year. I will get my bsn online after that an it’s my dream to work from home.. I’m pretty introverted so thanks for sharing this with us
@Pinthalfounce - you are very welcome. Wow! You have tons of experience transitioning to RN. I also did my BSN online in 2 months at Capella. Great program if you're looking for one. I believe it was the Flex Path, where you do it all on your own. I'm also an introvert so work from home and the Flex Path were perfect for me. Good luck on these last few months on your journey to RN. You're almost there! You can do it!
@ thank u honey and yes I was thinking about capella.. thanks for being my confirmation that it’s the right thing to do..I heard they are starting this month making ppl do clinicals now and that sucks but other than that it should be fine
Thank you for sharing. You are why we become and continue to stay nurses.
@annasnow5595 -Thank you and thank you for watching ❤️
I just finished several hard years of caring for my mother with dementia. Though I knew the prognosis, her final days came with a sudden onset at dinner, when she was no longer able to swallow. Her precious life wrapped up in the space of 12 very, very, difficult days. Now back to pursuing my own life with a permeating heaviness, looking to God for all. I could never be a hospice nurse. Never, never. I'm still in shock at what I witnessed.
@jacqui3837- my heart goes out to you. That sounds hard. Your mom was blessed to have you there with her. I agree. I cannot be a hospice nurse. I don't have the ability to NOT cry over every patient I'd have. Thanks for sharing. ❤️
Great video ❤ Thank you for sharing your experience.
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching
How do you get UM or PR JOBS
@Tricia-d7h - Good question. getting some experience in insurance as a claims examiner or something else could help, but if no insurance experience just make sure you have a great resume. Not every nurse has experience with insurance but still manage to get hired based on bedside experience and the desperation of the company looking to fill the job.
How do we find wfh and cm jobs??? I’ve been looking and can’t them.
@stephaniewynn8291 - Good question. Job search websites (such as Indeed.com) or the career section of insurance companies you are interested in. Be on the lookout in a few weeks in the near future of me looking for these jobs and letting you know which ones are good to apply for, if you're interested.
@ thank you so much! I will be on the lookout and waiting for your video 🙏🏽

You are very welcome. Those are two great professions! Good luck to you on your journey❤️
I was 33 when went to school. I felt embarrassed going back and not being one of the younger students. Someone told me, “ in 5 years you will be 38 so do you want to be a nurse or still just thinking about it”.

Congratulations!!!🎉
You go girl !!!
Did you mean to say 2024 because we just started 2025. Lol. Congrats to you. I say with God all things are possible.
Thank you for the video. How much bedside nursing experience is needed for this type of job if any?
You're very welcome. I see postings that say 1 year or equivalent experience at times. I also have seen 5 years needed. It just depends on the company. Search around and I'm confident you will find one suitable for your years. I barely had a little under 1 year as a registered nurse at bedside and was hired but also had relatable background in insurance working for the Medicaid program in my State so that helped.
You are beautiful and GREAT. Thanks for the advice. It has changed my perspective of what setting i want to be in. HAPPY HEALTHY PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
I'm glad it helped. Happy Healthy and prosperous New Year to you and yours as well. I hope it is even better than the last year❤️❤️🙏🏾
