My FAILED attempt to hitchhike from NYC to LA
I wasn't going to upload this as there really wasn't a lot to the video apart from me walking around. But maybe it will be of some use to someone else planning to do the same in the future.

They say you should follow your passion. Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life. But what if my passion is a place... I love Los Angeles, the Hollywood Hills, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Studio City, Topanga, Calabasas, Laurel Canyon and all in between, to be specific. I am so obsessed with this place that the only thing I can think of, except booking a one way flight ticket ther...

81, Outlaws, Pagans, Banditos.... according to the FBI & DEA
Mongols are the most crazy and deadliest most likely since they never retreat, 81 is the biggest so people see them as the "Deadliest" just like pagans cause they're the most violent on the street.

In 1965. when I was 16yo. I hitchhiked from Denver to Los Angels to see my girlfriend. It took 2 days sleeping in the bushes. But I made it, had a good time. My parent's bought me a bus ticket back home to Denver. Today, I would not hitchhike, too dangerous. Peace, J from TX
Love it. Takes a lot of balls to do what you did brother. Hopefully I can build up the courage another time to attempt it again!
I’ve never hitchhiked, but from the few hitchhiking vlogs I’ve watched I learnt that you are extremely unlikely to get a ride trying to get one inside city limits no matter where you are in the world. People seem to have better success by having a sign and hanging around gas stations. If you had a sign saying ‘I’m visiting from England and trying to hitchhike across the US’ - I bet loads of people would approach you and offer a ride because of the novelty Not hopping the train barriers was a good move. If you commit a crime whilst visiting (even minor ones) you could find you are refused entry next time to try to fly into the US. Minor traffic offences don’t count, but I think hopping one of those barriers and getting caught doing it likely would. Looking forward to the next part
I think that was exactly my worry about hopping the barriers. Plus I'm a visitor and have a lot of respect for the country i'm visiting. Before flying to NYC I thought about making a sign saying I was visiting from the UK but I got lazy and thought I could still manage. But to be fair it was my first time attempting to hitchhike and my gut was telling me it was a bad idea lol. 600 quid down the drain but at least I learnt that hitchhiking/ being homeless is no joke, my first night was super rough. Just the first step though, definitely not going to give up. Maybe I'll try walking/hitchhiking Washington to California next time.
lol nice vid bro 👍 remember me? I’m born and raised here in SoCal I didn’t know u were here

What does California mean to you?
Where's your favourite place in California let us know!
I moved here from rural IL 35 years ago and I still can't believe I found a city that so suits me and my personality. For sure it's not for everyone, but when I have friends and family visit they all say the same thing. "This is nothing like I thought it would be." I have photos on my phone of the Silver Lake hills that look like they were taken in the south of France. I love it.

Some great films set in Cali that you may like. Inherent Vice (2014) - 70s, trippy, hippie and fun Chinatown (1974) - 60s, before counter culture, great mystery film about drought in cali Mulholland Drive (2001) - You'll love the cinematography here, so many great shots of LA. Once upon a time in Hollywood (2019) - You already know about this, I'm sure
some very good scenes and cinematography in once upon a time in hollywood but overall the movie was mid i'd say.
there is also The Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhaal, excellent movie u must see it
Are you on the green card list, do you want to move there? Have you seen the hitchhiking videos by Mike Okay, could you imagine doing something like that?
only way I could see myself living there is if I've got a decent income coming in. i'd probably never go again without a few quid in my pocket. It just makes it more fun with at least a couple bucks to spend. This time I want to visit and stay in a decent hotel and hire a decent sports car. But who knows what the future holds :)
@@crookedsmilegang If you want it desperately there are ways of making it work, but if you want to just move there and live like a millionaire then you need the millions first. Else you could switch to a job here that would enable easier transition. E.g. Become a UK cop, then switch to US as soon as you can - though it’s much more dangerous there for obvious reason (pretty well paid though). Some other ideas are nursing, roofers, solar and wind turbine workers.
@@Ironbuket I've thought about a lot of avenues to get there, all quite long shots but worth it.
@@crookedsmilegang I would think police would be your easiest route, due to security background and general easy entry. Although being a cop tends to change ppl so you might not be smiling after a couple of yrs. Become a UK cop (don’t tell them about the bus depots), move to the US in some small town and enjoy a peaceful life. Not so sure about LA though, doubt it would be very peaceful as a cop there

Not sure if you are interested in revenue or just running this channel as a chill hobby, but I had an idea for how you could grow this channel to probably give you a reasonable income and still be somewhat related to your past work: Auditing videos are quite popular atm and you could probably grow to 30-40k subscribers I would think without much effort. Auditors are often asked if there is something the owner/representative can do for them when they are initially challenged. I thought about your pot noodle video with the embassy’s and also the time when you walked into that hotel and asked them to look after your bike. I can see you doing something similar to the other auditing channels but making it funny with asking them if they could give you some hot water for your pot noodle when they made contact (just as an example). I was thinking you could do an audit approach similar to the DJE Media channel but without the need for a drone. He basically works on, If they haven’t put up signs or barriers then just walk into places and nosey around (apparently perfectly legal until you are asked to leave). Even bus depots might be fair game if they don’t have signage out the front. You could do an approach similar to a cross between the pot noodle embassy thing and your freemasons building visit? I like the idea of you doing travel vlogs, but that requires significant time and effort, compared to just picking on any random office building that is nearby. You could do a police station if you were up for it. Do you think the cops would get you some hot water for your pot noodle? I think they actually might :) If the police do get called this attracts more viewers and if they are stupid enough to detain or arrest you, they you get a payout which could be up to a couple of grand for a couple of hours work PS: I was thinking that perhaps a lack of a search criteria is possibly why your channel never really blew up. By doing ‘auditing’ you would get flagged up for everyone interested in that type of content, and that is a lot of potential viewers you could attract quite quickly once they see your USP of audits actually being funny. No worries, if you prefer to leave that kind of thing to the past but I kind of miss some of those funny interaction (wind up) videos you used to make
Very interesting thought. When I was making videos in the early days, auditing was quite popular back then too. I thought about it back then but said to myself that I was not an auditor. Some audits are funny and i've watched all the popular guys. when that bus stop vid got 150k views i knew it would be just so easy to keep doing those type of vids, get into auditing etc etc but i chose not to go down that route. definitely something best kept in the past :)

It’s a shame your channel isn’t a little larger. I’m sure there would be plenty of people in the US happy to have you stay with them a night or two as you toured the US. Maybe next time? I don’t know how you could sleep in a car for that long a period, your back must have been wrecked?
hehe much love brother. The worst part was the personal care side of things like taking showers using public toilets etc but yeah quite uncomfortable. But on the bright side I got to see quite a bit of the USA! Was definitely worth sacrificing some comforts. I do this just for fun anyway but would be nice to have an audience. Thanks for your continued support brother :) you're a day 1.
I'm always open to couch surf or camp or even hitch a ride out there! hitchhiking sounds quite fun now that I think about it.
@@crookedsmilegang I wonder if hitchhiking is still a widespread thing in the US these days. Did you pick anyone up during your travellers? Maybe out in the sticks I could see people stopping, but if you stop near a city you are as likely to be car jacked as have a friendly passenger to keep you company?
@@Ironbuket haha I did pick up a few people along the way. Very interesting people I must say. I have a rule that I don't pick up anyone when in the uk, but when I'm abroad I like to think of it as part of the whole package of travelling. I gave one homeless guy a lift in Cali. He goes by the name Driftwood.

How much did it cost you to hire a car for those months you were in the US and did you have to pay extra at the end because of all the miles you did?
£3000 for a month. It was unlimited milage so no fees. Luckily it was a new car so quite economical. Southern states were very cheap on gas around 3 bucks a gallon, in California I saw places around 8 bucks lol basically the prices we have here in the UK. It was painful seeing it gradually go up the further I headed west.
Was this right at the end of your time in the US if it had been 3 months since you went there previously or you went to the US before in the same year?
Yes I flew to LA in June and stayed in a hotel in Compton, rented out a car, went to San Diego that was fun! Then around 4 months later in September I flew to NYC and drove to LA. Don't judge me it's just too nice! Nothing beats USA in my opinion. Where abouts did you go in SOCAL when you went out there? did you hire a car?
@@crookedsmilegang Flew into Phoenix Arizona. Drove over to San Diego with a friend. Short trip into Mexico just for the day. @@averageconsumer3212Welp damn -- nice observation. Still, he didn't take in the views of seeing Bucee's from afar while pumping gas!
Fun activity to pass the time, but Google says: With modern vehicles, if you're not accelerating, your engine already has cut off fuel consumption and you're not wasting any fuel while you coast. All you have to do to stop fuel consumption is to take your foot off of the gas pedal. That means that shifting to neutral does not save fuel. And If you simply placed the gear selector into neutral the engine needs to remain idling and therefore requires fuel to be injected. There is absolutely no benefit to be gained in this condition. And (this one is the best one as implies you actually use MORE fuel by putting it into neutral) The engine still needs to keep turning but, because the engine and wheels are disconnected, the car can’t get the rotational power it needs from the wheels. Instead, it needs to send a small amount of fuel into the engine to keep it powered (known as “idling”) instead of drawing that power directly from the wheels.
Only correct if the hill is steep enough to overcome the friction of being in gear - otherwise you will slow down more quickly, and likely grind to a halt.. requiring to use accelerator and probably more gas (than idling) to get going again.
@@pafcndg3808 I thought the same as you, that engine braking will slow the car on mild inclines where as it might roll further in neutral and overall you would save fuel. However, looking it up I wasnt able to find any source that supports that. Can you find one? The issue seems to be that in neutral the engine has to use fuel to keep the engine turning over but with engine braking whilst rolling the engine turns over without needing fuel (or at least much less). Maybe it is only a modern car thing, but that was a modern car as it was hired. This may be the bit of information you are missing? = ' If the car is fuel injected, then when you are engine braking you are not using fuel. Most modern ECUs specifically cut fuel when the engine is spinning down for efficiency and fuel saving.'
I barely know anything about car mechanics but I was focused on the rpm and trying to keep it as low as possible. in neutral it would idle around 0.9. but whenever is was in gear without pressing the gas it would idle around 1.6. generally lower rpm means less gas used. I passed a sign saying 20 miles to fort bragg and looks at my car it said i had 20 miles left but by the time I had reached fort bragg I had 3 miles left it might have helped somehow :)
@@Ironbuket I don't need a source.. I know from experience - I've done this kind of thing on many occasions.. in gear a car will slow down on any downhill slope not steep enough (depends on multiple factors like which gear, how heavy the car is, and the angle of the downhill). I always allow cars to engine brake when coming to stop lights to save on breaks wear (yes you can also do that in a auto). Yes, on a steep downhill staying in gear is better for fuel economy on modern cars with fuel injection cutoff.
@@crookedsmilegang Engine RPM doesn't equate to fuel usage when the ECU is cutting fuel if your foot is not on the gas pedal. I just wanted to point out that you wouldn't save gas if when in gear the car slowed down too much that you needed to accelerate again.. anyway, idling is still going to be a lot less fuel consumption than keeping your foot on the accelerator.
