Welcome to Tight Lining MD. The goal of this channel is to help new and intermediate fly fishermen alike with weekly videos that put on display a variety of techniques, tips, and tricks. When I was first starting out I was in desperate need of help to learn the art of fly fishing. My hope is that the videos I publish help someone learn to love the sport. I most often tight line/ euro nymph using a Mono Rig. I have been inspired to fish that way from websites such as Troutbitten.com and watching videos such as Modern Nymphing. I hope you enjoy the channel and videos, thanks for tuning in!
Euro Nymphing: Managing Sighter Angle to Catch MORE Fish!
There are many "tricks" you can do on the water to compensate for changes in the water, when you want to be lazy. For example, if you just fished a deeper run, with two flies, and now you move to the next hole and it is more shallow than what do you do? Would you cut down your rig and change to less tippet and a single fly? That is one option. However, watch this video and see how I simplify managing your sighter angle to allow for changes to your drift, without changing your rig!

STUPID SIMPLE Jig Streamer: A MUST HAVE IN YOUR FLY BOX
everybody has a totally different way of rigging the "best" way lol
I don’t know if there is a best way. If there is, I haven’t found it. There are simple ways; which is why I titled it the way I did. But I’m not in a position to say something is the best. I can say simple or most effective. But as always, with life and fly fishing, there’s a lot of “it depends”.
how does a fly shop give discounts on items that have MAP pricing?
Guess that’s for the fly shop to figure out. It’s also a one use code: which allows them to sell at full price for all items. However; still allows a customer to get a small discount on a specific item of their choice for just one purchase. It’s not uncommon practice. Troutbitten has many similar discount codes for a variety of stores nationwide.
Curious to know how often you get snagged on the bottom with this method?
Not as often as you’d think. Watch one of my more recent sighter angle videos. That helps me limit it a good bit. Also, can always change weights of flies accordingly. If all you are doing is dredging or ticking the bottom then something is wrong
Just found your channel….go back through all your videos with the hopes of learning how to tight line fish. Great stuff, thanks!
Thanks for checking it out. Wish I had more time to keep putting out videos. But with full time job, guide service; and two kids it’s a bit tough. I try my best to give coaching/teaching points in videos. Stick with it and I’m sure you will do well. Tight lines!
Does it come with everything I need to get started? Like all I should have to do is add tippet to the ring?
Literally everything! It has the reel, rod, line, even a leader (though not my favorite; but certainly good enough) and even comes with tippet to use, which is 5x flouro. Heck, they even include flies now, which appear to be good Tungsten Beaded ones. The price has even dropped recently, which makes it a GREAT deal right now. Here is a link for it: amzn.to/45nTxVQ I would highly recommend for a starter set up, which I think it is better than a beginner set. Just be sure to choose the Euro Nymph Ready to Fish Bundle. It was $399, which I thought was a good enough deal. It is now only $320!!! Enjoy and thank me later! Tight lines Jonathan!
THANKS for this one , Mike!! I've tied it up on jig hooks in #12,14, and 16, and caught rainbows, browns and brookies, in NH and CT, on all three sizes! It has become one of my GO TO flies on a double nymph rig- also successful below a dry on a "hopper/dropper" set up!
That is awesome! I love a good dry dropper set up, especially during terrestrials. Size 12-16 is the sweet spot with nymphing. It is not uncommon I got to sz 18 for dry dropper, depending the size of the fly. Thanks for watching and commenting Jeff! Tight lines!
Looks like PA?
Not PA for this one :)
Thanks Mike! More good tips to bring fish to the net.
My father caught a 3-1/2 pound rainbow trout. Opening day we dropped the lines, I was with my uncle. Well he hooked the fish first. But when he pulled it to the bank it broke his line. We left, my dad said take me down there. 5 minutes later he pulls out that same fish, pulls the muffler minnow out of his mouth, gives it back to my uncle. Then takes his fly out of his mouth. Craziest moment. Now live 10 minutes down the road. Big trout in this river
Amazing! Many thanks!
Glad you like it!
You prefer a tippet ring instead of a bloodknot or the sort to connect the butt section to the sighter? Interesting
There are a bunch of ways to connect them: Tippet Ring Blood Knot Small Perfection loop tied in UV Splice and more.... This video was going for the "simple way" and I have found this is the easiest and most overall effective for any person to master and work confidently. I would likely wager the "best" way is to do the small perfection look tied in. To each their own on how they do it though. Tight lines and thanks for watching and commenting.
Do you have any plans on coming back over to western MD ?
Was just there this past weekend. It was awesome!
@@tightliningmd Are you going to do a video of it? The water was somewhat low, but glad you had an awesome time. We're going out tomorrow.
No videos. I barely got to fish for me. Maybe 30 mins each day during just after guide trips. Caught a bunch. But this weekend wasn’t about me.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it. This was fun to make and I am glad people are enjoying/learning from it. Tight lines!
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the feedback and hope you have fun on the water. Thanks Mike!
Mike, I shared your Facebook post to the SFAOD group and plugged your meeting presentation with us in July, but I think I forgot to tag you. Just letting you know. Excellent video BTW. I bookmarked a couple of the products you recommended!
Ed! Thanks for watching and sharing with the group. I am really looking forward to meeting you guys in July and talking fly fishing with your group. Hopefully someone in the chapter can try it out on their own with this video as a building block, then I can help answer questions when I am there in person. Tight lines till then and I hope the products you selected treat you well!
What a great video for beginners and experienced alike. Mike cuts right to the chase and takes so much guess work out of the equation with detailed explanations and proven on stream techniques. I’m sure those that put this information to work on their waters they will pick up their game big time. Thanks for putting all of this together and sharing with us.
Thanks for the feedback Dale. As someone who know their way around a stream and Euro Nymphing, it is great to hear your words of affirmation. Tight lines and I look forward to hopefully connecting this summer!
You say bring your flies down at or slightly sliwer than the pace of the current.I take it you mean slightly slower than the pace of the surface current.Another good video.Cheers
I want to bring the speed of leader, which is above the surface, to "at or slightly slower than the pace of the current". Which is essence would mean the flies are doing about the same as well, if not more. Hope that helps. Tight lines on the water!
great video!
Thanks! Appreciate you watching and being a member Art. Congrats on that Driftless Brown, a real stunner!
Really nicely done Mike. Great production too! You very clearly communicated lots of detailed information. Great stuff.
Wow! Gotta be one of the best euro nymphing how-to videos I've seen. Simple, easy, and to the point. Thanks for simplifying things. This really helped me a ton.
Thanks a lot Jaron! I really enjoyed fishing, teaching, and editing for this one. I figured it might help someone, and if nothing else people might enjoy the fishing side of things. Tight lines out there!
hi mr slep
Hi Henry
Nice Bows Dude!
Thanks man. I don't mind a good stocker bashing session every once in a while. Was fun to try some new things and have some success. Tight lines!
Funny how those first couple were just hanging out by your feet! Nice video Mike.
I know, right? I showed my daughter that part too. Very unique! Tight lines out there Scott!
Those are some big ole trout , and I definitely caught the same trout , only days apart , on a different color streamer , chillin out in the same fishing spot
Days a part is pretty cool! I don't think ive have any noticeable encounters of a fish I have gotten later on a different trip, but in the same hole. I did catch the same fish once before in the same day. Nice 15-16" brown. He was in a different spot the second time and at a different nymph a few hours later.
Those are some nice fish, glad you got to fish on your own.
Thanks Cliff. Always good for the soul to get out for a bit. Tight lines brother!
nice vid!!
Thanks for watching and commenting Art. Hope you are well and I will be seeing you on Monday for our monthly YT Member meeting. Tight lines buddy!
awesome
Thanks, certainly made my day!
Mike, that was a great day. For only fishing that creek once before you knocked them dead.
Thanks Dave! That last big one, which I didn't hook on film, I smashed that hole prior. I had gotten 4-5 others and just didn't record to save battery. When I hooked him though I couldn't pass up turning it on, he had some SHOULDERS! Tight lines!
Hey quick question I’m new if I want to start fishing a streamer how should I learn ? I tried throwing one I couldn’t throw it at all
I would suggest using a standard floating or even lighter grain sink tip. All depends on the type of depth/water you are fishing. Many streamers don't have weight and you need either split shot or weighted line to get them down. Honestly, practice and time on the water. Consider hiring a guide as well. They can not only help with that, but get practice and refine your technique. Any time I am struggling with a concept or approach I do the same. Saves time getting it wrong doing it myself :)
Great video Mike, enjoyed the takes from the stocked bows! You did well on that stream!
Thanks Jerome! The stream treated me well and was in great condition. Fish were fired up and I was glad to tangle with a bunch. Tight lines buddy!
Pretty awesome!
Im pretty excited to get my hands on one. Thanks for your order Dale!
Nice Mike! I’m definitely grabbing one! 😊
I sincerely appreciate your order Bryan. Fortunate to have a friend in the fishing industry like you. BTW, at my most recent clinic, when I mentioned resources, before I could even start someone suggested your YT Channel and series. I confirmed they were right and for everyone to check it out. Keep up the great work my friend!
@@tightliningmd I dig the leather patch man and happy to support you. Speaking of channels.. I was talking with some guys last year at a fly tying night at the local shop and they were talking about some of your streamer videos for big trout. I told them we were friends afterward.
Bro netted a fry 😆 jokes aside thanks for the tips and time you took to make the video. The fighting techniques demonstrated are paramount with larger fish I was just surprised when I saw what you were fighting haha. These tips are very helpful tho I had a bad habit of letting fish run downstream and breaking me off when it came to netting. Tight lines!
Sadly I did. I was out of time and wanted to at least make sure the technique was shown. However, to your point, I wish it was on an average fish minimally lol. Barely put a bend in the rod, but counted! Tight lines and thanks for watching.
Already grabbed one!
Yessir! An OG Supporter. You are my guy Josh!
Is this the gunpowder I just started fly fishing I’ve been loving fishing there but I would really like to catch my first brook trout any tips on how to look for them?
Thanks Mike! Missed this one I must be fishing too much. I like how you surgically worked that run and broke it down for us viewers.
How do you judge what speed to lead your nymphs. Also do you always try to have a curve in your sighter when leading. Can't really see your sighter on the video.Cheers great video
I try to go at/slightly slow than the pace of the current with my "lead". Very rarely am I pulling the flies down stream. If anything, try to go with river. At the end of the video, sorry if you didn't make it there, I did a close up of the sighter. Hopefully that helps some. I generally like a very small sag. Situationally things can change, but many time I lead with a light sag or loss of tension. Thanks for watching and commenting!
What a great run Mike. Nice to catch fish no matter the size.
You got that right! Thanks for watching Dave!
For us beginners you need to show your rigs
When you say your rigs, do you mean the leader? I am using a Micro Leader, which I will post a separate video for later. Is it tippet? If so, 6x tippet and I discussed depth in the video? Flies I covered. Just curious which you meant. Best of luck as you keep going out, sorry this wasn't enough. Tight lines!
@tightliningmd First let me say your videos are great and been a huge help to me. Iam just a very visual learner and it just helps to the detail on your setup. For instance the spacing between the nimpf and the egg. Its alot to learn and every little bit helps. Iam so glad I found your channel.
@@joepro8858 Thanks a lot and I am glad to help, that is why I post them. As far as distance goes, I like about 18-24" of distance. I would start with the 24", because that allows you a couple fly changes before they get a little too close together. As far as total tippet, including the 24" I like about 1.5x the depth of the water. So if there is 4 ft of water I like about 6' of total tippet. Hope that helps!
Hopefully this video would help me out up in the smoky mountains next time I go. Much thanks from Mississippi.
how do you cast streamers precisely in such tight conditions? And what kind of rod/line setup do you use?
It is tough for sure, time on the water and practice is the short and boring answer. In some of these, for example one I did in the intro, I am pitching it in almost like a bass rod/set up. I also water haul/load casts too sometimes. In this video, I was using a "Mono Rig", i have these on my website when the shop is stocked and open. I put on usually 1-2x tippet of about 4-5 feet and use either a non slip loop knot or clinch knot. The rod in this video is a 10' 3 wt Syndicate rod. A little unconventional, but gets the job done and allows me some versatility. Thanks for watching and tight lines out there!
Please get a wireless mic
Agreed! Thanks for the feedback
Nice looking fly. I like the disheveled look. Nice tie Mike.
Thanks for watching and the comment. This is a fun one to tie up and wildly effective in winter and spring. Hopefully you will give them a shot! Tight lines!
Tags have been my go to as of late. Need to try making my own devils next, thanks for the guide
Any time! Tag flies and attractors are great. I usually pair up with a natural and see what they are into that day. Tight lines and thanks for watching/commenting!
Great looking fly, looks like it will produce. Reminds me of the Jon Dere fly they use in Missouri waters! Thanks for sharing Mike! Always enjoy the content!
Thanks 👍 I will have to check out the other variation. Haven't heard of that one one before. I appreciate the support Jerome. Hope you are having a great spring out that way!
