Author Douglas Burton on “The Heroine’s Labyrinth” - The Female Story Archetype
I had the great pleasure to interview author Douglas Burton on his book “The Heroine’s Labyrinth” which proposes a female story archetype. Rather than being opposed to the Hero’s Journey, this book describes a set of story designs that are more common in stories with female leads.

My personal one is Nightwish. Pretty much any nightwish but the series All The Works Of Nature Which Adorn The World in their human nature album really gets me going
Idk what I expected him to say at 12:50 but I did NOT expect him to say Coraline.
I've never learned so much in one hour. Douglas Burton is a true visionary.
Writing is 90% discipline. Lol never wait for motivation
I would say the midpoint is learning the new information about Andarna, feathertails and their power. The stakes are raised enormously because Violet now knows a secret that could shatter what everyone thinks they know about the dragons, breach a huge Empyrean secret and change the relationship between humans and dragons. It's the first time that Violet has to actively consider how her choices will impact the safety of others (Andarna and feathertails in general) and it's immediately tested when Dain tries to take her memories in the next chapter. Until this point Violet has considered dragons as a means to an end - she wants to survive them, bond one, become a rider and live out her days. This is the point where her role shifts and she begins actively protecting dragons, and outright questioning her teachers all knowing' authority. Everything changes from this point onwards.
A writing retreat sounds good. I have been too busy have not had time for writing.
I hope you can find a time to escape and write soon!
@createwithmer me too
at the midpoint (book 2) of my trilogy right now and this gave me some great stuff to think about! i actually find that midpoints can be the hardest part; a lot harder than finales. the finale is super exciting and i can't wait to get there...the midpoint requires more skill not to make it drag.
I love it when smart people break things all the way down for the regular people. I appreciate that cuz I don't understand much writer/author lingo yet. Did you learn all this from the one book, "Save the Cat." or is there another good one also that really helped you? I wanna learn this stuff like the back of my hand. Thanks!
This book enthralled me...what a beautiful book. Velaris, Starlight, the love story of Rhrys and Feyre...the companionship, the camaraderie, what a class act. Now about the plot i think this book was pure romance to serve as a basis for whatever comes next. It will be the foundation. The "why" they fight. The beauty of Velaris and we understand because we lived it and experienced it. One of the best books i ever read. I can tell some dark moments are coming but we will always have Starfall and Velaris...On my way to book 3 now..
What most people miss is that the antagonist is not the venin, but the Navarrian military establishment!
Yes!! tbh, I've forgotten what I said in this video to spark this comment. But my current understanding is that the venin are objectively antagonists and certainly a danger to society (what with corrupted magic and all). But you're 100% right that a much more personal evil and antagonism can be found in the government's suppression of information and re-writing of history. I love this twist too. It adds so much conflict on top of the obvious issue with the venin. It almost turns it from a war story to a dystopian.
@@createwithmer - She draws heavily from dystopian fantasy tropes (and I don't mean this in a bad way)
The midpoint is the execution of the wingleader who assisted in the attack. This allows for the major breach between Dain and Violet, his eventual betrayal where he aligns himself with the actual antagonist (not the venin, but the military leaders who are covering up the threat of the venin)
"The peace of mind that comes with being in a clean environment that you don't have to worry about is so lovely." AMEN TO THAT! I've always wanted to book a hotel and have a solo writing retreat... your video might just be my sign 😂
You TOTALLY should! I felt so focused for the first time in ages. I call it an investment haha
Love the vlog and the writing retreat.!😊

When you compare the work routines of your favorite creative professionals, you begin to notice the similarities in their basic function. I'm a traditional painter instead of a writer, but the steps toward a successful career are kind of the same for all mediums. No matter what your routine is, if you stick to it, it becomes muscle memory and you can apply all of your thought to your work. Kudos. Awesome vid.
Its wonderful to hear from an artist in a different discipline than writing! I put this video up over two years ago now, and I can say for sure that good habits are the foundation for great work. I've stuck to good routines and watched my writing get better and better. Hopefully that will only continue. Thanks for saying hello :)
can we talk and be friends...I mean good friends❤show me how we can connect and chat and talk
Oh this is a cool vid - was actually wondering about Fourth Wing's structure. Candidly, I just looked over the book and think there are actually 2 - one for the Romance Arc / one for the Topical (story) arc. Romance Arc: Chapter 20 (The one you mentioned) This is where Violet / Xaden moves closer romantically, e.g. "And gods I admire him for it . . . Wanting and admiring? I'm so screwed." Topical Arc: Chapter 21 (First Part) This is where Violet realizes that the death rolls were inaccurate / people like Liam's father were executed who didn't take part in the rebellion / the Navarre is evil "Your father was Isaac Mairi, right? . . . But he wasn't a part of the rebellion," and "He isn't on the death roll of the executions from Calldyr." Topical Arc: Chapter 21 (Second Part) This is where Violet / us are told about the supplies being looted by Poromiel. "The conditions at Sumerton are of particular concern. A village was ransacked and a supply convo looted last night - " I think it's important to mention that a Midpoint can be subtle, it might re-frame the story in a way that the reader doesn't understand on the first reading. Think that's what's going on here: storyfix.com/story-structure-steries-6-wrapping-your-head-around-the-mid-point-milestone
Ah! That's very interesting. Yes, I think both arcs have their own midpoints, but the midpoint of the main story is the one I'm after here - what you call here the Topical Arc (the one involving the main conflict). I've heard many different theories since posting this video about what exact scene actually defines the midpoint, and I have yet to see agreement. But I really like the idea you've laid out here - highlighting the misinformation and Violet starting to suspect that there is something strange going on with what her own government is telling her. Since this is the heart of the conflict, it makes sense that beginning to uncover it would signal the midpoint. And I like your point about midpoints being subtle. I think the scene/moment itself can be subtle for sure. However, I do prefer for a midpoint to create a noticeable escalation in conflict and stakes. But that can also be a reader preference on my part. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Try decaf coffee. You’ll be able to have more without having too much of a caffeine kick. I prefer tea too. I’m English. 🫖

I joke that I'm not a morning bird or a night owl but more of a "midday pigeon" lol 😂😅 My best writing times are always like 11am-3pm!
@@nataliejaneshields haha! I love the phrase “midday pigeon.” Honestly I wish I was a midday writer. That would be so much more convenient than crack-of-dawn writing lol.
Listening to the dramatized audio and pretty sure theyr the same voice actor for both books Edit: They're not but they sound to same to me lol
It doesn’t surprise me that the two voice actors sound very similar. If they turned these books into movies, they could probably use the same actor lol
I do not have any problem whatsoever with JK Rowlings' "politics" (she calls a woman a 'woman'? I'm shocked.), and I surmise more than 90% of us don't either.
Thank you, I really detest these disclaimers people keep making as if JK Rowling’s opinion is the fringe one rather than the unhinged people insisting men can be women
good to see you again! 😀 i don't think i could ever adhere to this routine but i'm glad it works for brandon.
@@zakariasdream it’s definitely not for everyone! Staying up until 4 am every night would be so rough for me, but it turns Brandon into a writing machine. I like how it demonstrates that every writer has to find a good routine for their own brain, even if it seems crazy to other people :)
@@createwithmer what routine ultimately have you found to be the most beneficial for you? or does it change?
@@createwithmer i am an extremely intuitive architect, if that makes sense. i outline rigidly, but then only write when the muse comes. i have been largely unsuccessful at anticipating this or devising any sort of regular routine as it pretty much equals creative death for me. the same goes for my music. i have never been able to truly plan anything i have created. but i also believe that all the creative works i am to complete in my lifetime are already predestined. paraphrasing Michelangelo, he talked about how his sculptures were already complete in the uncarved rock, and it was just a matter of removing the bits to reveal what was already there.
@@zakariasdream I've settled into a consistent schedule of writing right when I wake up from 6:30-8:30am before work. I've been doing it for over a year now, so I think it's working!
@@zakariasdream Being an intuitive architect makes total sense. I'm an architect as well with heavy before-hand planning. I tend to do well with routine, but if I'm too rigid, burn out is around the corner. So, I've learned how to let my creativity breathe enough to not reach that point. I've always loved the Michelangelo idea of carving away the true picture underneath. When I get stressed about decision-making, I like to lean into that idea.
Omg i feel both seen and called out at the same time 😂
😆 it’s the way of writers lol
This video and (and title) is exactly what i was looking for! Awesome video, keep up the great work!
So glad you found what you needed in this video!
Great video 😊 I think creatively, I am better in the evening. I can do analytical work in the morning, but coming up with something new will be easier in the evening. I am just too tired when I just woke up.
Then this routine sounds like it might be something to check out! I struggle so much when trying to be creative at night. People are just wired differently, and it’s awesome that we’re all finding the ways our brains work best.
Hooray you’re back! This was great - it seems like the late night would be great for focus, but I don’t think I could stay up that late all the time!
I'm back! 😆 I've been really focused on work and writing, so something had to take a back seat. But I'm excited to be posting again. Staying up until 4 am every night is definitely NOT sustainable for me either lol!
I do imagine what I’d tell a creative-writing class 😂😂😂
I’m trying to find an agent for my latest… torn between feeling like it’s really good and feeling like it’s crap

I just bought this book. Can’t wait to read it!
Yay! I hope you’re enjoying it. I found it really helpful for learning to frame a romance arc
This was really helpful, thank you so much!
You’re welcome!! Super glad to help 😊
Really enjoying your videos lately! Would you be able to share a list of your favorite craft books, maybe even just the ones in the pile in this video? Thanks!
Yes! Absolutely. 1. Save the Cat writes a novel - best for beginners because it outlines the absolute basics and helps put together all the essential story components before you go on to the complicated stuff. Honestly, if you never read anything more than this, you could write a pretty great story. 2. The Story Equation - this book is not at all well-known, but it had the best explanation of a character arc and how to plot it alongside plot structure I've ever seen. I have a video on this if you want the sparknotes. 3. Story Genius and Wired for Story - I actually am just reading these now so no full opinions yet, but they are great so far, and people rave about them. I'd say they're a step up from Save the Cat and dive into the brain science of how to hook and affect a reader. 4. Intuitive Editing - a great resource for a less rigid editing guide than Story Grid. Lots of helpful principles about tension and pacing. I enjoyed this one. 5. Story Grid - I recommend with some hesitation. They have some incredible principles, but they overcomplicate many things and over-simplify some CRUCIAL things. That's why it's at the bottom of the list. It's not a first resource. This should be read after you know the basics so that you can sift for yourself what is helpful and what isn't. Reading this as a first resource might have made me want to quit writing lol. But their scene structure idea is really essential and helpful. This is a tool for editing, so other resources are good for outlining. This is good once you've already written the story and want to figure out how to take it to the next level. 6. Some recs for writerly encouragement rather than technique - On Writing by Stephen King, of course. And then I found Novelist as Vocation by Murakami to be a charming and enlightening read. I wish you well on your writing craft dive!
@@createwithmer you are awesome, thank you!!
I think we need to clarify for point #1 that things get more dangerous from that point on after the midpoint, not during the midpoint
Yes point #1 relates to the second half of the book, just as the rest of the points do as well 👍 In retrospect this point needed more context, but thanks for clarifying!
I'm not a fan of romantasy, but most of my friends are, so I'm definitely the odd one out. I'm just more into sci-fi, mysteries, and thrillers. The word "flesh" should only be used in zombie stories! But I also don't like the words "moist" or "trousers." And the phrase "she spun on her heel" can fuck right off. I've hated that silly turn of phrase since I first saw it in a VC Andrews novel over 30 years ago, and YA / NA seems to have made it a requirement. Whyyyyy. Why. Nobody spins on their heel unless they are wearing wheelies or skates, and let's be real, that's not happening. Please make it stop.
Hahaha 😂 agreed about flesh being reserved for zombies. I’m on a big sci-fi kick myself right now, and the difference between it and Romantasy is staggering honestly. She spun on her heel is such a classic in YA lol, and I 100% see the lack of appeal since people don’t typically stand there and actually spin on one heel. I agree we could be finding better ways to describe promptly leaving somewhere
A champion of women. I bow to JK Rowling
Love the updates! Joining a Bardsy critique group was definitely the BEST thing for my story. Its so amazing to have feedback :)
I remember you mentioning your Bardsy critique group a while back! Reflecting on it now, I think it was one of the things that motivated me to look for critique partners, so thank you for the inspiration :) It's sooo good for the story to get more eyes on it, even if it's not perfect.
Sounds like your process is going well and love your enthusiasm for your book it is very encouraging 🙂 thanks for sharing the website for critique partners I'm going to give it another try. I haven't had much luck in finding a good match but I'll try again. And The StoryGrid sounds like a good resource I'll check it out.
I understand not finding the right critique partner. I feel like you do really need a specific person who understands what you're going for and loves the genre. With this website, since there's so much included in the profile, I feel like matching with others who were the right fit was easy. And they found me actually! Both of them have been incredible. I hope you'll have some more luck finding a good critique partner. And story grid is a good resource, but it makes some things over-complicated. So, I try not to stress about things that seem too rigid in their method and attempt to learn from the principles that seem beneficial to me.
@@createwithmer Thanks for the tip on The StoryGrid. 🙂 Now I'm in my trail and error phase.
Thank you for the update. It sounds like you are making good progress and I can learn a lot from your process. The one thing that I am not sure I agree on is that every scene needs to be exciting. For me when I am reading it is not only about excitement but also a lot about atmosphere. Like when I read Harry Potter for example I love reading about the lessons even though this is not all exciting and important, it pulls me into this world going through normal days with Harry. Scenes with slow pace also allow the character to reflect and become aware of consequences. Of course, I am aware that the market has changed and people love fast paced books, and I also enjoyed Fourth Wing, which I think is a great example for this, but while I enjoyed that book in the moment, it did not really stay in my thoughts afterwards, I was somehow missing depth. But this could be very personal as I love philosophy and discussing meaning when other people maybe prefer to have this shown by actions without putting it into words. Just something to think about. But I am sure your book will come out great and I hope I can read it one day. I just started writing a very first draft of a story and I have so much to learn to make this an enjoyable read.
I think you're completely right! Exciting was not the best word for what I was trying to describe. I was searching for a word to mean the opposite of "boring," but some better candidates would have been: hooking, interesting, engaging, gripping, intriguing. Basically, the idea of pulling the reader in rather than letter them lose interest. Excitement does go along with the idea of action and a fast pace, and that's not always good (though there is a trend toward having that ALL the time - like Fourth Wing). I have a ton of philosophical and conversational scenes, so mine are definitely not all exciting, but my hope is that they will all be gripping. Thanks for discussing!!
@@createwithmer I understand. It is also quite interesting to think about how the reader perceives the book as opposed to how as a writer we feel about it. Of course, they should not be bored. I am very intrigued about the philosophical scenes. I hope I get to read your story one day :)
Lovely to have an update! Critique partners are awesome!
They really are! It's so good to have another pair of eyes calling out things I just can't see.
That's why I keep a separate document for future scenes 😈
I 100% do too. This scene was already copied in my save-for-later doc lol. I would NEVER delete that scene without a back up. It was too beautiful 😆
YESSSSS!!!
Me. Except they're worried about me kissing boys. Like no, that's gross 😭
I felt the pain, when you deleted it T_T
I had already copied it into a graveyard for extra scenes, so it's not gone forever. But sadly, it can't stay in the scene. Those cuts are the worst
