    This is a great performance, one of the ones with the deepest understanding, I can assure you. Thanks for the upload! This is a live performance, and Schiff has the ability of _not hitting_ a key when it would be a mistake. He just omits it, and yes, I can also hear them. I am sure that these are not "simplifications" but accidental mistakes, and his mistakes are like this (a good gift). BUT! He is far deeper in understanding of anything he plays than most other pianists, and his performance is not only meaningful, but this meaning is "appropriate". The important thing is the single major cause why the composer composed a piece. When Schiff plays, the _important_ thing _is_ there. Here it is not mere virtuosity but meaning. The meaning and the essence should not be sold for cheap anyways. We heard him in a concert, after two WTC pieces he played Beethoven's Op 109, 110, 111. Then he played the whole "Tempest" Sonata as the encore. I was there with my good friend who is a professor at the musical academy in Budapest; and we agreed that for the encore, Schiff would be able to play any Beethoven Sonata from heart with the same depth of understanding. This is him, he does not only have his repertoire in his "wallet", but a huge musical warehouse is in his head and hands, ready to be performed anytime; and you can experience this in every notes he plays. His lecture on the Hammerklavier worths your listening if you are interested. This is very much detailed - and you'll understand what he does here. ua-cam.com/video/UD8Isld41k8/v-deo.html

    It's the first time I’ve listened to a pianist play this sonata using the Barry Cooper edition (just check out the third movement). However, I don’t understand why he skipped the full chords in the right hand in bars 32, 33, 124, and 125 of the first movement.

      Maybe he didn't have enough preparation (this might be a last-minute request), those parts are the most technical part of this sonata, and I could not even count how many hours I have spent drilling on those measures alone.

      @paulogazola Місяць тому

      @@heinzgilbert I'm taking the risk of offending some people here... but Bach, Haydn, Brahms, Scriabin, etc, are good examples. Of course, their music has mathematical elements, but its not just that. Otherwise, I think Mozart is a genius at some aspects, but I don't like his music so much. Maybe too shallow, template music... (🏃). But its just my personal taste here. Late Mozart is very good. Symphonies 40 and 41 are pure gems

      It also could be that the Grand was tuned up per the request of Michelangelli (the type of demands he was known for) for this session. Another version that would make a valid comparison against the 1949 one was his 1969 Scarlatti recording but that alone isn't sufficient to judge.

    • @pianoredux7516
      @pianoredux7516 4 місяці тому

      @@gaiusflaminius4861 Many UA-cam videos of classical music, including piano recordings, are a semitone high. It's a common problem that seems to be caused by some technical bug in UA-cam's compression and upload process. It's not plausible, musicologically or otherwise, that Michelangeli would have retuned a fine piano to A455, A460, or higher. Furthermore, pitch was lower in previous centuries: in 1815 A was generally tuned to 415. I don't know what it would have been in Scarlatti's time.

    • @gaiusflaminius4861
      @gaiusflaminius4861 4 місяці тому

      @@pianoredux7516 My statement didn't imply the tuning conventions, supposedly accepted as a standard, nor had it to do with "musicology". The pitch and speed of recording aren't interdependent either. It's a technical peculiarity which may or may not emerge, but lower pitch doesn't entail slower _actual_ speed. As to the tempo Michelangeli played, it is a debatable subject.
