For some reason, YT has only uploaded thr SD version. I'm not going to re-upload it though, it takes far too long. The river is starting to wake up, but it's still a wee bit cold. A week or two should see it fishing well again.
Spotted a huge grayling on the Tummel. (Didn't catch it though)
Переглядів 3705 місяців тому
A quiet day on a still sleeping river, brightened a little by seeing this monster. I know very little about grayling, but from what I've been able to google, it looks like it's close to the record size. If anybody knows more than I do, which is pretty much everybody, let me know if belly flopping is normal behaviour for them.
A quick early season recce of beat 2. Nothing doing just yet.

A short walk up the river to see what's what. It's still too cold, and the river hasn't woken up yet. There's a few pools that have changed completely, and a couple more that will take some getting used to.
Another day, another broken rod.

That's three snapped for the season. I will try to get back out tomorrow with the TFO single hander, the only one I have left now, and I take back anything positive I might have said about the Maxcatch 4# Switch. It is a gigantic heap of shite.

Spent a day on the River Tummel at Pitlochry. Not the most productive trip, but a fantastic water to cast a line to, and one I will definetly re-visit. At only £10 a day, or £30 for a week, it is outstanding value for money.
River Tay. Dunkeld and Birnham Trout Permit. - A total waste of money

What is advertised as a trout fishery is actually a largely inancessible stretch of water between two salmon beats. If the water hadn't been so low, practially none of it would be fishable. There's about a miles walk to the jubilee bridge, the start of the upper part of the beat, and I'm guessing that most people don't make the effort and stick to the tiny stretch in town. If you were thinking ...

Second time fishing the WOL this season, and maybe the best day I've had on it. Managed to get 3 fish to the net, and didn't fall in. There is a much bigger fish in the slow pool , but I couldn't get it to rise. Maybe next time.
What a day! Best trout fishing session I've ever had. River Almond.

Started out a bit slow, but once the river woke up I had the best day's fishing I've had on this, or any other river, for a long time. Not many fish, but three absolute crocs. Shout out to Tony. Did you manage to hook anything on that wee seam?
Easter Monday session on The Almond, and a welcome surprise.

Just a short visit to my favourite beat 2 and 3 pools as it's always too busy on the lower beat at Easter. Thought I had hooked into a wee fingerling, but it turned out to be quite a lot bigger than expected.
I caught a fish! I chased an otter! But mainly I caught a fish!

At long bloody last, I hooked into a wee troot. It's been almost 6 months since I caught anything that didn't have more legs than eyes. Also, there's a wounded or distressed otter up near the railway bridge. If you see it, call the SSPCA on 0300 099 9999

    Don't know why you persist with that river its dangerous due to no access and when you do manage access its even more dangerous. You occasionally see a fish but chances of getting to it are slim .

      it is a hard river to fish, but I've had some good days on it. it maybe doesnt hold the numbers or size of fish that the tweed and tay hold. it can be like fishing on an ice rink, but i get it to myself most of the time, and Im willing to put up with its crap for that alone.

      the lower beat, from the toll brig to the car park would be best I think. it can be tricky to fish beats 2 and 3 if you dont know the river very well. there are a few big slow pools from just upstream of the brig to the lower car park that would suit you

    • @thetattooedangler
      @thetattooedangler 4 місяці тому

      a 5 weight is just about perfect as an all rounder on the almond. its good for the sea trout as well as the browns. I generally use a single dry, either a size 14-16 greenwells glory, or a size 14 daddy long legs. a short tapered leader, 9-11ft, on a floating line does the job for me. use gink too kep them afloat. short upstream casts work best for small dries, stops them getting pulled under too quickly, or creating a wake behind them. that will put a fish off every time. if you want to use wet flys, the same leader will do as the river isnt very deep and you dont want your fly to sink too fast. a small buzzer or a blue and silver works well the whole length of the river. You can use a team of flies, but until youve had time to practice, you should stick with a single for now. cast the wets across and downstream, with a mid to fast retrieve, and dont lift your fly out of the water until you have too. a lot of the time a fish will follow it right in close.

    I grew up fishing these same pools 30+ years ago. Spent much of my teens there learning to fly fish. Lovely to see them again, and glad you're out enjoying them. I caught one of my finest at the pool you call Moby Dick's (we called it the Grotto S's or the Bends) - a bright silver 2lb sea trout. Our favorite flies were wets - Black Spider, Alder, Greenwells, Partridge spiders - switching to dries for rising fish. Well done. Great to see the river again.

      thanks jon. I love fishing the almond, mainly because it can be a bit challenging but holds some big surprises. Ive seen a few monsters at the bands there, but theyre way too smart to fall for my crappy casting. my biggest sea trout was caught down at the lower car park, a fresh run beauty of about 5lbs. it put up a hell of a fight in that wee shallow lie on the far bank. still not had a salmon from it though. one day.

      @@thetattooedangler I once saw a good salmon taken on fly from the car park pool. They are there for sure, along with a few personalities fishing for them.... Learning to catch trout on a challenging river was a good thing. It didn't spoil me with fish every time I went, but there were enough to keep me going back (every day through school holidays.) I was very lucky to have the river a short bus ride away growing up.

      @@thomaschapman1158 I would practice casting on a still water first mate, its a lot more forgiving. casting on a wee river like the almond needs a fair bit of control over the line, so someplace where you can let the line out behind you would be best to get the feel of it I reckon. if you want a quiet spot, pick anywhere on the river mid morning and mid-week. you'll get the place to yourself most of the time. you'll only learn so much that way though, so ask somebody to help you out. most will. the bridge is the queensferry road bridge, just upstream of the aul brig in cramond village.

    Nice1 good to see you get off the mark 👍🏼 I was out for the 1st time this season on the water of leith I caught 2 half pounders & 3 or 4 7/8 inchers but I just want to ask for a bit of advice if you don’t mind 🤷🏼‍♂️ Firstly I use an 8ft 4 weight but I’m not sure what length of leader to use so I’ve just been doing the length of my rod would you recommend going any longer than 8ft or even shorter 🤷🏼‍♂️ I’m in Edinburgh so I mostly fish the water of leith the Almond & the Esk & always fishing for browns my fly collection is pretty lame atm but I found a site that has great deals on mixed dry flies & I’ll be placing an order on Wednesday there’s a box of 42 for £21 including the box which has a mix of Grey Dusters,Adam’s,Black Gnats,Caenis,Greenwell Hackled,Knotted Midge,Winged Black Ant & Greenwell’s Do you think these are ok for catching browns on the river? The only snag is they are all size 16 & 18 I’m not sure if there’s an option for 14’s & 16’s which I would prefer all their dry flies are 50p for the most so if there’s no option for a box of 14/16 in these patterns I could just order them separately 🤷🏼‍♂️ so just need to know if the flies I mentioned should be ok & the size. Lastly if you could recommend maybe half a dozen different dries to what I’ve mentioned I’d really appreciate it as flies are the last thing I need I have everything else I hope I’m not being a pest & asking too much but you’d be helping me out big time due to my lack of knowledge of flies. If youre fishing the WOL, then the 8ft leader is best for most of it, seeing as its pretty tight. I normally use a 9ft 6x tapered and just cut the last foot off, leaving a loop to add tippet if needs be. Its best to use a tapered because you dont get much of a back cast, so it helps transfer the energy to the business end. The rule is to use the longest leader than you can comfortably turn over, but 8ft is plenty at this time of the year. later in the season, when the fish are a bit more cautious, adding a foot or two is best practice. In my experience, the best flies to use are size 14-16 greenwells, size 12 daddy, and 14-16 klinkhammers and spiders. The angling centre in granton has then by the dozen for around a fiver. I dont use wets much, but wee red or green buzzers do the job if the waters a bit fast for dries. for sea trout in the lower almond, I use low water blue and red doubles, or a standard butcher pattern. Ive caught some good fish on them so thats what i recommend.

    • @thetattooedangler
      @thetattooedangler 5 місяців тому

      @@craigleith100 getting kinks in the line usually means that the fly isn't heavy enough to turn the leader over properly, so you need to change one of them out. i.e if youre using a size 12 on a 6x andf its kinking, go to a 5x or a size 14. the fish can absolutely see kinked line on the surface and they will not take a fly if theres even a hint of leader afore it. Greys do a good tippet for not a lot of money, so if you have 15lb or12lb mono to hand, you can make a good taptered leader for a fraction of the price you would pay in the tackle shop. just graduate the diameters as you get to the business end and you'll be grand. its a shame about mikes, but he was getting outgunned and robbed blind, so I dont blame him for packing it in.

    Hi Chris, as ever, great to see your wee film appear in my list. I was out the week before, there was a three hour patch where it was actually warmish enough for some fly life! I caught a fish right at the tail of the grotto pool on a wee mallard and claret, but it wasn’t big enough for me to unclip the net. I hooked another about the same size earlier about 50yds up from the Cramond Brig on a nymph, but it was off in a couple of seconds. The river had colour, but not too much or too high. WoL next week, it opened yesterday.

      nice. ive been watching the WoL for a week or two. it doesnt get washed out as often as the almond, and it looks fishable from dean village to pilrig. well, it did before the rain last night.

    Like most of UK rivers, very tough going! Every March I turn out "just because", against my own advice! I would think the streamer lure tight to marginal slacks could probably get a fish in those conditions, but as you say the proper fly fishing will be better towards the end of April. Good to see you out again, anyway, tight lines!👍

      just below 0.5 is best from the railway bridge down to soggy arse and the pines. 0.5 - 0.7 from the old brig down to the ladders below the weir. the tide doesnt make too much difference to the water level above the ladders, but the fish wont run unless its somewhere around the .7 mark

    Well done for getting out, you are a braver man than I! More of the same shit here today, cold NE wind, no sun and now it's pissing down again. Spent the day power washing my back yard! @thetattooedangler 6 місяців тому

      Aye, just as I gave up, the drizzle started. By the time I got home it was pissing it down, and still is. It's put the kybosh on my plans for fishing one of the 3 T's later in the week. The rod feels like it's going to be a lot of fun. I bought it direct from maxcatch. It took two weeks to come, no problem in the close season, but it was about £20 cheaper than amazon. The only issue I have it that there's no groove or whatever it's called in the reel seat, so you have to kinda jam it in and tighten as much as you can.

    • @thetattooedangler
      @thetattooedangler 11 місяців тому

      i changed the shooting head out for an airflo switch line so that there wasnt a big heavy shooting head on the end. I hadnt even made a cast when the rod snapped. I have looked at it and there was a void on the inside of the tip, creating a weak point that was always going to come away. Im just glad that it did before I went further afield. the rod felt ok when I was able to use it, and i would buy it again if i wasnt concerned about the smae thing happening again. I emailed the company and got no reply.
