An UNCOOKED chocolate cake!?
A sweet treat for that sweet person in your life, perhaps? 💕
In this video, I’ll be cooking up a 1940s UNCOOKED chocolate cake, a classic wartime recipe that doesn’t require any baking! During the war, ingredients like eggs and butter were often in short supply, so this no-bake recipe was a clever way to make a sweet treat with minimal resources. Join me as I follow this retro recipe step-by-step and see how it turns out! Will it be as tasty as it sounds, or will it be a total flop? Watch to find out!

I baked a 1940s National Loaf- did it taste like cardboard?
Переглядів 38 тис.14 днів тому
In this video, I try my hand at baking something that I've talked about enough times- the iconic 1940s National Loaf, a staple during World War II in the UK. This hearty, wholemeal bread was introduced as part of food rationing efforts and became a part of wartime life. However, many people reported that, rather than this being a hearty wartime substitute for typical bread, it kind of tasted li...

Over the last few years, as I have shared my home on social media, it seems to have been organically coined 'the 1940s house'. Well, as a bit of harmless fun, we're going to rate my tiny period home room by room on its historical resemblance to a genuine 1940s British home. I’ll be diving into everything that makes (or breaks) the authenticity of my little home on a day where I have deliberatel...

And don't get me wrong, I do love my work and I'm proud of it, it meant that I could pay off my mortgage and I've met the most amazing friends. But rewind to little childhood me, who thought that she'd be an actress gracing the red carpet...

I'm sorry for my ignorance , and I'm always eager to learn, but could somebody please explain why the cake has a gender ( she)? I notice this on several UA-cam videos and Im curious about why. I hope that I don't offend anyone (or any cakes)😊 by asking this question but I'd REALLY like to know! Thank you ❤❤❤

I used those types of rollers and you needed to be careful because the plastic closures would leave impressions (lines) on your hair. Pond's cold cream and Vaseline were staples in the medicine cabinet. I loved eating fresh veggies straight from the garden. What you find in the grocery store today has no flavor at all, especially tomatoes.

Nice try, having lived through the 40s i can see the flaws but I don't blame you. Life was very hard through the war and after. I never knew anyone with an indoor lavatory, our 30s house had one just next to the backdoor and coalhouse. Our kitchen/living room had a bungalow range with a coal oven next to the fire. Mostly the floor coverings were linoleum (lino) with a carpet square if you were lucky. small mats or pegged rugs were common. There were fireplaces in the bedrooms and the front room but they were rarely used as coal was on ration. Hot water was available in the scullery and bathroom only if the fire was on and the damper was taken out. Furniture tended to be art deco if you could afford it; sideboards with rounded ends were fashionable but during the war there were only Utility patterns available (my Utility single bed lasted for over 50 years before I gave it away). I'd better stop droning on best of luck with your house.

What was it with apples? A domestic product you didn't have to import, with a plentiful supply in-season. Likely a lot also went to cold-storage or preserved as apple sauce, making them more consistently available.

So, I’m totally confused. Weren’t tinned goods like SPAM and certain veg like tomatoes also rationed? Wouldn’t that have a dramatic effect on this experiment?

I've found it helps the rise to stir the water and flour together _briefly_, let them sit for about 20~30 minutes, and then go on with adding the other ingredients, kneading and rising. The wait time lets the bits of bran soften so they don't cut the strands of gluten so much.

I found your channel last week and immediately sunscibed! That cake looks delicious. My go-to,fail proof, cake recipe is the " depression " cake. It is said to be named both for it's era , and the fact that it can be mixed in one pan. The wet ingredients are added to 3 depressions made in the already combined dry ingredients (oil, vanilla, vinegar) before being covered with water. Give a stir and pop in the oven. It is lovely. Thank you for the beautiful and informative content. Love from British Columbia, Canada 😊

My mother and father were born in 1918. My father was in Honolulu in the Navy when it was bombed. Meanwhile, my mother was working in Alaska as a surveyor for the highway department. They met right after the war. They went through so much during the 40's, but had so much joy also. I'm now almost 73 and love everything vintage and antique. I lost all my grandparents by the time I was 3, but now have 13 grandkids of my own. All 5 of my kids love antiques and treasure things handed down from my parents. I love your channel! Thank you.

I am a new subscriber! I loved this video and loved your house! It’s so cozy and vintage. ❤️ My mom passed away last year. She was 78 yrs old. Watching your videos reminded me of her and my aunts who also passed away. Their pictures were always stunning and they always were very focused on the style and their appearance. The main focus was always the hair. My mom for YEARS washed religiously her hair on Sundays very early in the morning. Would use some “wired/net like” rollers and be at least an hour under the dryer while she read the newspaper and fixed her nails. Every morning she would wake up at 4:00 am to take a bath, put on her makeup while sitting at her vanity and doing some rollers on the top of her hair. She used Ponds at night. Her hair was ALWAYS set. And she had beautiful skin! I think we should rescue some of those old habits. Especially spending quality time together as a family.

In the USA one cup of coffee per day for a house hold. Was the average ration. People used additives like roasted dandelion root or chicory and reused the grounds refreshing them with a teaspoon of coffee each day for that week. By the end of the week it tasted more like brown water . Roasted dandelion root and chicory both sort of have a coffee like flavor but it caffeine free.

Round the 7 minute mark of the video, I just wanted to share with you that you shouldn’t put any sort of freak catcher in your home, as it is not a Christian object, and especially placing it over a cross… as you can see in the video, you did just that. No hate at all, just wanting to let you know. And also, you should definitely look into items you shouldn’t keep in your home, as it is quite interesting some things we never even considered “demonic” are actually! Hope this helps! ❤️❤️❤️
