Around the Board
United States
Приєднався 28 січ 2022
Our contributors, Daniel, Andy, Chris and John all share an intense love of the board gaming hobby.
However, they don’t always agree on how they feel about particular games or issues in the board gaming community.
Around the Board gives them an outlet to air their differences over various topics and try to earn points with their arguments from the producer behind the scenes.
At the end of each show the winner gets two minutes to rant about anything they want.
Who will you agree with?
Who is full of hot air?
Who will you root for?
Are they all just unhinged?
Find out for yourself!

I think my current top five for GenCon are: 1) Invincible 2) Rock Hard 1977 3) Gnome Hollow 4) Clans of Midgard (Just cause I love champions so much) 5) Vegetable Stock (yes out previous but now has a US version)
This actually made me laugh out loud. Ya'll are clever coming up with this. Jr popping up from the side as the doctor got me with his big smile and chuckle =D
Gmt is going to be at Gen con? I didn't see them on the list, so didn't think geust of Robin hood was going to be there.
MLEM is fantastic. Lords of Baseball does sound interesting. Burning Banners looks cool. A Gest of Robin Hood has been one of my favorites this year. I got in on the P500. Great episode! Thanks for putting some stuff on my radar.
Glad you enjoyed it.
I'm interested in Lords of Baseball!
MY PEOPLE!!!!
Daniel: Likes blue and orange. Me: Are you Blippi? :D
"Wait! I'm still thinking!" token? You mean an "Andy Time Token"? :D
But is it a TRUE rondell???? :D :D
It is!
TRUMP THE BOARD GAME?! SERIOUSLY?!???? LOLOL
John's deciding on if it's "Merica"??? It's literally called "Founding Fathers!" Who else could it possibly be other than the Founding Fathers of... wait for it... America?! LOL but I do agree, the pitch wasn't exactly "fireworks on the 4th of July" :P :D lol
I knew it was Ark Nova!!!
Shelf of Shame? Pffft... more like "Ledge of Dredge!"
"It's too much math!" -Andy (put that on a t-shirt!) hahaha
Female Fox is a Vixen, Male Fox is a Dog. Baby Foxes are named either pups, kits, or cubs! A group of foxes is called a skulk or a leash.
"We're on a desert island! We can get CRAZY!" -Daniel LOLOL
LOL @Andy's point about water damage on El Grande on a deserted island! hahaha!!
LOL @John when Chris mentioned hex grid LOLOL
Deserted Island? Why not Two Rooms and a Boom?
Is that Hansa behind the game covers? LOL
Best boardgame show I have seen in a while. ❤
@seniscram7958 thank you. That means so much to us. I hope you stick arpund and check out our other episodes. - Daniel
I'm with Daniel on this. Going hard and heavy on the historical games. 1775 is awesome, that system is like Risk for the hobbiest gamers. Academy Games also does Freedom the Underground Railroad which is solid. I've always wanted to try Founding Fathers. Out there pick I would have chosen is Greed Incorporated. Loving this format! The island games vid was a riot.
Thanks for the comment. We made sure not to stay to heavy in the history section which is why we said "Murica" and not just American themed games. I would have said less History games, but these fools kept hating on the history. Founding Fathers is a cool game, maybe it hasn't aged the best since some of the cards are very swingy, but it is a unique experience. Any thoughts on what our next top 10 video should be? I was thinking Top 10 games we would play with Taylor Swift. - Daniel
Chris if you wanted guns, way better choices than Bang would be Carson City or Coloma or I have not played it Western Legends. But Daniel you are so right Bang is just so boring. Vegas showdown would be better than Las Vegas.....I do not get the love you have for this game. Chris you talk about industries that developed this nation and yet exclude whaling. This country wouldn't be here without New England Whaling. Catan...Chris I do not think you and I would be good gaming partners. Acquire would have been a great pick the first great American Designer, a game about building Hotels and Motels and stocks and takeovers. This list I might not walk right into the shark's mouth but I might debate a bit.
I mean 🤷🏼♂️
Lets pretend Trump the Game was actually Acquire. I really like that Acquire being on this list. I can't tell if your comments about whaling is series or trolling? I mean I didn't even know Americans were involved in Whaling, but I am very aware of the Train industry. "VETOed!" - Daniel
Love the game show ❤ You are really improving on reacting and timing 🎉
@maarten3811 thank you. I'm glad your noticing improvements. We want to be around for a while so hopefully we keep getting better - Daniel
Our 4th of July game for the last few years has been "1775: Rebellion". We could add "The Shores of Tripoli" to the rotation this year, but 1775 is a must. Unfortunately, "Founding Fathers" will be on our shelf of shame until we have a third player.
1775 is such a great game. I only played it once, but it was the best gaming experience I had that year. It was a lot of fun. The unique cards each faction has is sooo powerful, but its fun because they are ALL powerful so it doesn't feel unfair. - Daniel
So not good games...just....'Merica.
Well, all but one we would say are great. John just trolled us, and he got bit. But in John's defence, he remembered the game being okay. After all John is old and was able to play it when it was the hotness. - Daniel
You had a veto…
So did Chris! But your right. I should have know Chris wouldn't veto anyone's but mine. I still can't believe you didn't veto 1830!
In retrospect I should have.
@@johntheisman6516 So many regrets cause by you on this episode. shame.
You all forgot America! We play it every 4th of July. Great list! Even with that glaringly obvious mistake (I mean does anyone really watch baseball anymore)? But seriously, this is the most American top ten list of America games I've ever watched. Kudos.
I love this comment from start to finish! Your right America! should have been on the list. I feel like Andy owned the game, I wonder if he would have attempted to add it to the list. And your right about Baseball. I actually was scared Chris would Veto it because "Football is now the American sport" is something he totally would say. - Daniel
I don't think those guys wanted to play. I thought the last 2 were very obvious and I dont even play that many games lol.
I am sooo bad at this game. Even after recording it and watching the show I usually STILL can’t guess the right game.
ahahah I thought the same thing. After the segment I asked them if we should shelf this segment for a while, but they thought it was the best one we did! Like John said in the comment below, they are just really really bad at board game trivia. But hey, now you can watch these segments and always know "at least I know more then these bozos" - Daniel
Why are you calling reviews written by dudes Karens? Why are you laughing smugly about obvious jokes written by these people?
You think a male can't be a Karen?
@@freegameskidsteens Yes. How can you possibly think a man can be a Karen?
We don't mean anything by it, we are just trying to be a little silly our self. If you watch our other "Board Game Karen" episodes, you will find us agreeing with some of these one ratings. In the end, we are just trying to create a little fun, which, we get, may not be for every one, but it makes us laugh :) - Daniel
@@freegameskidsteens Chris likes to call male Karens Neck Beard Grognards (which he is a self identified grognard)
@@AroundtheBoardShow If you wanted to create meaningless silly fun, why don't you title it "Goo goo gaga gub gub gub" instead of "Board Game Karens"? If you don't mean anything, why have a podcast?
Still makes me laugh! LOL
Its a classic. We need more.
Some would say there's a Monopoly on the shelf of shame.🤦♂️🤣
Some one say there is a SolarQuest on the shelf of shame (That is a game on Randy's Shelf.... Which is the shelf of shame) . Nice pun ;). - Daniel
Fun game, I didn't get the first one, but I got the second game from the first clue, and the third game from the second clue. :) Absence of capybara is a legitimate criticism.
Yes a zoo game needs a capybara! I saw you represented the capybara in your latest video! Very funny. The Elizabeth Hargrave bit had me rolling. - Daniel
I have Andy's problem. I definitely buy more than I should. I've gotten much better but I'm still culling games that I've never played. I need to start playing games multi-handed solo to at least try them before I get rid of them.
I have a bad habit of trading or selling games that I haven’t even played yet. Sometimes I kick myself afterwards.
Be careful admitting you have "Andy's Problem" that is something years of psychiatric help may not be able to fix. I use to learn games, by playing them on my own. Then I had kids, and a switch was flipped, now I find it really heard to learn that way - Daniel
Never hear of corto. Sounds amazing!
Very unique, both IP and mechanics. It's worth a play but you have to like simple area control. The unique boards are pretty cool. - Daniel
Such a great game. Asymmetrical fun that is still “balanced”.
Make sure you watch our top 10 "Murica! games releasing July 1st. This game will be making an appearance, but will it make the list? Or be vetoed by those commies on our show. - Daniel
1. A deck of Cards. A thousand games of bridge and still could play a thousand and more. Yeah Chris I am starting to doubt your sanity, 504 was bad really bad even Friedman Frese does not recommend it of his games. Skull King is the best trick taker you have ever played? I think I need to introduce you to more trick takers, not that Skull king is bad, but best no sorrry. I am with you Daniel, TI is ugh. Not with you on Star Trek Ascendancy. john by your reasoning then Civilization is the game you should bring, it never gets played because 8 hours is a lot of hours to spend playing one game, better game. I cannot think of a more painful experience than playing Power Grid for eternity. Shadows of Brimstone should be your adventure game, with all the expansions you will never finish. Chris I agree with you Arnak. It is not as good as people try to make it out to be. I have to be honest with you all besides COB (which is not my favorite Feld not even close) and TM, I think I am throwing myself into the nearest shark's mouth with all these picks. Snooze fest city or I should say island.
I love your comment. I love that four people can come up with a list we are relatively okay with and someone can still hate the whole list! I would be okay with the games you mentioned but I think this was a solid list ;) . Thank you so much for watching and commenting - Daniel
If you want better than wingspan, try Raising Robots. Excellent game, deep strategy, cute little robots and straight forward gameplay. My Play would be Roll player, my shelf is Rajas of the Ganges and trade is that pain Las Vegas....I do not get the love of that game it is just painful to play. Chris you did better than my husband and I we were both bored out of our minds playing the fox experiment. I should have loved it naming foxes, sort of euro mechanics, but nope I just wanted it done and so did he. I think Andy said it best there are so many better order fulfillment games, not the ones he listed (i like them but they are not the best order fulfillment games). Daniel, have you played Hadrian's Wall or Three Sisters, those are my favorite roll and writes. The ones you listed though I am not a fan of, so maybe you would not like the ones I like. Yes, shelf of shame and mine right now is over 300 games. I am finally resolved that I am selling the ones I am least interested in. Daniel I will teach you Glen More anytime. One of my top 20 easily I love that game, I loved the original and I love the new one so much. Yes, I got Ark Nova on the first clue. Just because I have heard that said about it before. Chris you have terrible taste in games. Keyflower is amazing. They do need to fix the repeat editions (which they are currently doing) and fix expansions should not be in the top games, it should be base games only.
I actully have Raising Robots on my shelf of shame. Seems like it has potential to resonate better then Wingspan did with me. Which is to say, I liked Wingspan, I just didn't like the ending. Las Vegas is fine for me, its just a filler that I don't care about. I don't have those roll and writes, but I would be willing to play them. I do have Fleet the Dice Game which is suppose to be just as good as three sisters (it is the same designer) so I haven't given up on them all together. Let play Glen More for sure!! I wish you would have ended this comment with just plaining "Chris you have terrible taste in games". No further explanation needed. - Daniel
The Roll Player expansion Minions and Monsters adds a combat element to the core game where you use your character. Adds a lot to the game. You have the option to fight a minion as another action then you can fight the Boss monster at the end of the game.
I have heard this but I have less then 0% interest in trying that expansion. I am sure its fine, and I might even like it, but I firmly believe the game is fine the way it is. Any thing that continues the game just fills tacked on. But I would be happy to be proven wrong - Daniel
PST: gotta go play Las Vegas cause always a good time especially the Royale version, shelf Rajas which is a classic, and trade roll player which I liked fine but wasn’t anything amazing. Fox experiment was fine. The theme was a bit of a turn off and I didn’t love other people getting the foxes you made. Not a bad game just not one that I feel the need to own. Shelf of shame is currently at 14. Longest is at a little over 1 year with Anno 1800.
I think the drafting of the foxes you just bred is necessary in preventing a runaway winner if one player has really good rolls in the early rounds, you still have the opportunity to retain at one of your pups.
I am surprised how many people think The Fox Experiment is just "okay", the hype for this one was crazy. I guess this one will be a "Not" in a few years. That is a nice size Shelf of Shame. You do a great job at getting your games played. - Daniel
I got into this board game hobby less than 2 years ago. Admittedly, I go overboard into any new hobby, and this one has been no different. I've since acquired 309 games, 163 of which are on my Shelf of Future Fun. I feel no shame whatsoever! With that said, I can really relate to your Final Say, Andy.
Welcome to the hobby!! That is a big shelf of future fun. Now if that shelf has the same 163 games untouched, it starts to feel a little more shameful. We should have talked about how long something needs to be on the shelf to invoke shame. Usually relating to Andy is a sign of distress and turmoil, so please consult a doctor if this continues. Thank you for watching ! - Daniel
Thanks! Love Radlands and Azul.
Thanks for watching Kenneth. As the list goes on, I think I will get to games that might actually be on other peoples list, like Azul and Radlands!
@@AroundtheBoardShow There are a lot of game that you have mentioned and I love :) It's a Wonderful World, Libertalia, Welcome to, Bunny Kingdom, Camel Up (I have the original + expansion), Sentinels, Sideral confluence :) Thanks! :)
Finished the video! Spectacular ending. Andy was gracious handing his pick over! I'm so happy Daniel finally got a game on the list after having bangers like gloomhhaven, Crew, and Legendary vetoed. Unmatched -such a great desert island pick
I agree the ending was the best. but appsalutly appalling that I was vetoed as much as I was. There is zero reasons that Gloomhaven should have been vetoed! that was absurd. - Daniel
Love Twilight Imperium at 4 players
I still need to play it. - Daniel
First crossover between us with Azul I knew sooner or later we would have one lol. I’m now curious if I will have more crossovers between my fav 100 and Daniel or John and his fifty.
You mean Corto isn't on your list!!!
Final girl would be to of my desert island games
Daniel owns it but (shockingly) has never played it.
Yeah we kind of avoided solo games on the list, but the games of mine (Daniel) that were vetoed would have been great solo experiences. These clowns would have voted a solo only game down in a second.
Marvel Dice Masters is one of my top three games. However, the trouble with any two-player customizable game (where each player assembles and brings his own deck/squad/team/fleet -- the same with Star Wars Destiny, Armada and X-Wing) is finding opponents. Generally, only persons heavily into the game bother to take the time and effort in assembling their own decks. I was playing consistently with my opponent (who taught me the game) for seven months (over 250 games), until he moved out of the area. Since then, I haven't played at all. That doesn't detract from the desirability of the game, and I've continued building and rearranging teams even though I've not played in seven years.
I am in the same boat! Do you want to share with me some of your builds? I haven't built a deck in five years, so I don't know what I have and what synergies I have. If you could share a few builds, I could hand them over to friends, and I might get the game played !! Thank you for watching btw :)
Man we are still at zero cross overs between us
I think I will hit a stride at some point! I have seen list you make and we have similar taste, you just have to get past my "Old Man-ness" first.
@@AroundtheBoardShow lol I thought Chris was the old man
@@beornthebear9023 The truth is, there is a little Chris in all of us.
I don't think John approved It's a Wonderful World to be #82!! #1... #82, that's quite the difference!!
#82 out of 1000 seems pretty good. John should just be happy I like any game he likes.
Yes. Our top fifty likely won’t have many crossovers.
Haha - this was too funny. One of my fav's. =D
Thanks it was our favorite too!!!
Thank you so much. It really means a lot to us.
I thought this was going to be about “ deserted island “ games . I was thinking there’s 10 of those ? All I could think of was Hellaopagos and Robin Crusoe . But glad it wasn’t about that hahah awesome video !
Well I am glad that John found ONE game that was at least called "Deserted Island". I mean there was no way it was going to make it on the list, but glad he found it :) . Thank you for watching! I am glad you enjoyed it. I hope you will check out some of our other episodes - granted these episodes are much different then the one you watched, but I like to think they are still good. - Daniel
I tried to steer several in that direction just so it wouldn’t just be a list of our favorite games. …and also to troll Daniel a little bit because this was his idea.
