F1/Skin-on-Frame Kayak Repair - Cockpit Rim
Following my last repairs to a weak point in the outer cockpit rim of my F1 skin-on-frame (SOF) kayak, one side of the rim began to spring away after a trip. Here's how I went about repairing and reinforcing it, plus a few tips on the way. If this doesn't hold up well enough then I plan to reinforce the entire rim by drilling and lacing it in place using the artificial sinew I bought for the build; if that transpires then I'll post a video of the process.
For more on this and other fine SOF kayaks and canoes, check Brian Schulz' website: cape-falcon-kayak.myshopify.com/collections/video-courses-plans
Chapters:

The abrasive sheets I show in this are made by JCB and I can recommend them for durability and ease of cleaning. You may be able to get them from your local hardware store but here's an Amazon link in case you can't find them: amzn.to/455Xtux (please note that as an Amazon Affiliate program member I may get a small commission from qualifying purchases, this helps support my channel but does not affect the price you pay on these products).

Compass App vs Baseplate Compass - which is better?

    Nice video and very informative and what a lucky miss, that bit of video sold me on I need to be riding with a camera! I have not been without a dash cam in the car for the last 10+ years and it now feels wrong not to have one, I have even transferred them to hire cars when I have had one, so its stupid not to have one on the bike as well. As I have invested 2.2k in a new ebike along with insurance for the first time, I thought id top it off with a camera as 75% of my ride is on roads that are brimming full of idiots trying to kill me. I was very close to buying the 4k version from chilli but after a quick bit of research i found the exact same version on Ali Express for £60 rather than £99, if Chilli had have been £70 then I would have bought there to support a UK seller but saving £40 for putting up with a couple of weeks delivery was too good and a no brainer in these times. The Mk2 listed at £69.99 can be picked up for £35 or less. I think Chilli need to be a bit more competitive on pricing if buying in bulk he has a very large mark up. I wish I could support them but its not to be at the current prices so its a shame as I really like his passion and content on youtube. If it was a no issue replacement for any faults within the first 18 months then it maybe would be worth the premium.

    • @chris-terrell-liveactive
      @chris-terrell-liveactive 5 місяців тому

      That would be ideal I suppose but it would mean republishing those maps nearly annually. If we are in the beginning of a magnetic pole reversal, it might start to do unpredictable things anyway and make compasses almost useless, which is why the other navigation skills are vital too, if we're not going to rely totally on technology.

      Absolutely true, all good Surveyors know that the 8 inches per mile squared only applies to the horizontal lengths that start at one mile. The Compass causes the line to curve sideways not lover a ball. They have charts made up about it in their books on surveys.

    What about electronic compasses in smart phones for example? Do the operating systems provide them with information about north, also with regard to the deviation, calculated according to the current location of the device? Or is it necessary to program the deviation into the applications that are supposed to serve as a compass, based on information about the current position obtained from GPS or from the mobile network provider, or entered manually? Do operating systems provide to applications only raw information about north, as they get it from a sensor sensitive to a magnetic field? Which compass app do you think is the best?

      Great question. I haven't yet used them, partly because I find smartphones very unsatisfactory to use in the outdoors (bright sunlight, cold hands, rain on the screen.. these all interfere with function) and I would never recommend relying on one; this is why my navigation course concentrates on paper maps and basic compasses. However these apps can be useful and I will look into this, thank you for raising a good topic.

    • @chris-terrell-liveactive

      I've just installed and done a quick test of Compass Steel by Simply Werx on Google play store (I have an android phone), didn't see the one you mentioned. First impressions are good, easy to install and calibrate (remember to remove case with magnetic clip!! :) and it can show True north if location is on, so it appears to be able to use a combination of a magnetometer, accelerometer and phone or gps data, though exactly how I don't know. It doesn't appear to enable setting local declination so you'd still need to make a note of that. Also it doesn't have an equivalent to the dial/bezel which you can use to make following a bearing easier - maybe other apps do? So you'll have to write down or memorise a bearing. You've got me curious now and I'll investigate further, maybe make a video on this, thank you!

    • @konzerva80
      @konzerva80 6 місяців тому

      @@chris-terrell-liveactive I also think it's not a good idea to rely on sensitive electronics, but an electronic compass could be useful for people who don't know about navigation to at least calibrate their manual compass according to it before hitting the road. Thank you for your great course. I am old, and it saddens me that such important information is not taught in our primary schools. I always thought magnetic north is really north. I think many programmers who develop apps that serve as a compass also don't know anything about navigation, they just know that the sensors give them some data that can be graphically displayed somehow.

    Hi Chris, I’m wondering, is there any skin type for a skin on frame kayak that would make it ok to leave in the water throughout the day, to save having to constantly take it out and in?

    • @chris-terrell-liveactive
      @chris-terrell-liveactive 6 місяців тому

      The skin on this one is ballistic nylon, coated with a 2-part urethane formulation made in the USA by Corey Friedman of the Skinboat School www.skinboats.org/. The best source for more detailed information is Brian Schulz' Cape Falcon Kayak channel and website: www.capefalconkayaks.com/ I have never had any problems with the kayak on the water for multi-day trips, especially sea water. The only thing I have found during storage off the water at home is that the very damp air we get here in Scotland seems to make the deck skin slightly baggy in places, mostly the parts not fully stretched tight when fitting the skin; this is probably due in part to my level of skill when I first built the kayak (my first one). Once I take her out for a trip and expecially after an hour of dry air and sunshine, the skin's fully tightened again and it doesn't appear to create any problems. After a day on the water i just try to ensure the kayak's a s drained and sponged out as possible inside, mainly to prevent rot from starting in the wood. Doing the coating right is an essential part and I would buy a bit more than I needed just to ensure I don't run short during the build, as you can't add another coat after the curing is done. The urethane mix made by Skinboat school is excellent and i can vouch for it (watch Brian's videos on the kayaks he builds.) Some people use other variations but I have no experience of them. By the way, I used powdered Burnt Sienna pigment (from an art shop) to colour the coating. There is a helpful group on Facebook called Skin-on-Frame Kayak Builders facebook.com/groups/SoFKayaks/?mibextid=oMANbw who are worth looking at too if you use that forum. I hope this is helpful. Best wishes.

      Yes indeed! I haven't had to do that and, as I don't have an SUV , can't rush out and risk my back trying but it's a good question. I do have to get sea kayaks and occasionally a canoe onto the car (roof about my shoulder height) and have seen wealthier friends using sliding ramp racks or other clever solutions now available. I'm guessing there may be similar options available for heavy bikes. Likely expensive though. Good point, thanks for the comment, something I'll investigate. How do you deal with that just now? The frustrating thing is the flashing LED light is pitiful, so seeing it flash in the daylight is difficult and checking it is on is difficult.

      The led light on mine is too dim in daylight. It seems they've made some improvements to this in the latest model, released not long after I posted this video! If i can justify spending the money I may get the newer version and try it. Good idea to make your own mount. I like the one i have that came with this camera as you can turn it but i think the new version is fixed.. one step forward, one back? Thanks for commenting.

      It's slightly better compared to the original mk2 and about the same as the mk2 with Sony Chipset.

      If you scroll down the description I've put a few links which will take you to suppliers. One is also an affiliate link to amazon, by the way. The plastic creel hooks are from uk suppliers and I've put a post in my Community tab about these and a workaround if you're not in uk. Have a look and please get back to me if these don't answer your question. Best wishes.

    This is actually a really good tip. Tried it without the hook first and it was a bit clumsy to get the strap around the shoulder while it was attached to the bike. The hook helped to solve this issue.

      @chris-terrell-liveactive 11 місяців тому

      That's exactly what I've found, I'd had the hook lying around for a while then the problem arose and it became part of the solution! Glad it helped, best wishes !

    I have this camera, and have used it mounted to my helmet with the velcro. I discovered that the footage is slightly smoother as my head acts as a gimbal. Simon at the Always Another Adventure YT channel also makes the valid point that in the event of a collision, a helmet-mounted camera would prove that you turned your head and looked. Food for thought, anyway :)

      I use the camera on my helmet for the reason you mentioned, plus, if someone were to get out of their vehicle, as long as I'm making eye contact with them, they'll be on film in case things get physical.

    hello I have a large bike but there's no bar across the top as it is a lady's bike. my bike almost threw down the stairs trying go down step by step on the stairs because traveling even one stair has the momentum to take off and tumble down greater than my strength could hold so it pitched me forward so maybe carrying it is a better idea, but it doesnt have cross bar to put my shoulder under. any ideas?

      I'll have a think and get back to you, I did a test with a step through bike a while back.. in the meantime, have a look at my video on carrying an e-bike, as the one I borrowed is step through and heavy too.

      I replied to your question on the other video but here too just in case. I you watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/wh2wZtoKnRY/v-deo.html you'll see I still attach the lifting strap to the lowest point on the frame, just in front of the rear wheel, even on the ebike with no cross bar. The strap does a lot of the work of holding the weight and you just have to hold the front tube or handlebars (or seatpost on the way down), as shown in the video. you can also use an additional short strap or bungee to help stop the front wheel from twisting around suddenly. Hope this helps, remember to test it all first, with care, without using stairs. Good luck!

    what about a safe way down stairs? can you demonstrate it down stairs?

      @chris-terrell-liveactive 11 місяців тому

      if you watch this other one: ua-cam.com/video/wh2wZtoKnRY/v-deo.html - slightly longer about the ebike - I show the setup with the lifting strap for up and down and a short clip actually going downstairs, which you can pause to look at if it's too fast:. A lifting strap, with or without a hook, is the key thing, whether a bike has a crossbar or is a step-through, and in this video I show you where you can best attach the hook or strap. I hope this helps. As I mention in these videos, test it first without going up/down stairs, to make sure this method is ok for you. Best wishes!

    I'd never put a float on a wooden greenland paddle. The risc of breaking it is considerable. Besides, as many others here have said, the bouyancy of the paddle itself is sufficient. In other words: do a regular float rescue, but forget about the float. And even better, of course: try to master rolling!

    • @chris-terrell-liveactive
      @chris-terrell-liveactive Рік тому

      I've not found it putting any excessive strain on the paddle, which is made of cedar so not the strongest wood, probably less than when using it to help slide in/out of the kayak on a low bank or rocky shore. Yes the paddle has good buoyancy but I wanted to test this for situations where extra stability would help, even just for a rest stop on a long crossing; I don't just use a float for rescues. There are many variations, this is just one more. Yes, a reliable roll is best to avoid a rescue becoming necessary. Thanks for the comment and for watching the video. Happy paddling!

    • @chris-terrell-liveactive
      @chris-terrell-liveactive Рік тому

      Another consideration is, if fatigued, when a capsize and failed roll becomes more likely, it's also harder to make the move onto the kayak without sinking the paddle, as I've found during practice sessions and for people with less upper body strength. Then the additional support of a float really helps. It just adds to the repertoire of options.

      @@chris-terrell-liveactive You've got a point. When I think of it, the danger of breaking the wooden paddle is rather when practising rolling tecnique with a float.

    During the day the sun rises in the east & sets in the west so if you observe that arc you can see the cardinal directions by observing that arc or a large portion of it... same for the moon- the moon also rises in the east & sets in the west... in addition from where I am at in DC [USA] When I look at the moons arc I am facing SOUTH as it travels its east-west arc... finally the stars also rotate around the Polar Star... so if you set a stick in the ground or use a tree & lie down you can determine the cardinal directions from that movement relative to a tree or the stick... provided you observe from that same lying down place- which is easy to do at night before you fall asleep, you then mark north on the ground at the foot of your stick or relative to the tall tree you chose & when you wake up you have North on the ground to set your direction for the day.

      Exactly, thanks for mentioning the moon and stars too. I refrained from doing so to keep things as simple as possible at this stage, plus people are more likely to be walking in the daylight. I may add these to the full course (nearing launch) in the next update. Best wishes.

      @@chris-terrell-liveactive It's great you are teaching these skills, there have been so many examples of people dying on thru hikes, camping whatever... when some very simple & basic skills could have made the difference for them.... just bcuz someone buys equipment does not make them capable in the wilderness especially solo. I have always been a solo guy & travel by sun, star, & moon, but I have also always been excellent at woodcraft since I am a carpenter & read a lot, love the outdoors [been an outdoors person even when young] & all that... people don't know what they don't know until they stumble their way into a situ that they are ill equipped & underkilled to handle- then its too late to find out... our modern world blinds people to the fact that no matter how "modern" or sophisticated a society becomes... whether you live in the fabricated reality of an urban structure or the boondocks... it takes skill, knowledge, wisdom, ingenuity, & physical acumen to thrive in the wilderness... I think a lot of people are so disconnected from the wilderness that they don't even realize that they are seriously under matched against a bear or mountain lion & will 100% be lunch unless they are fully prepared for such encounters>>> with the skills & preparation to flip the script in their favor... I don't know if you ever heard of "bearman"... he got his GF & himself eaten alive bcuz he thought bears were his friends... he didn't even have a bowie knife with him... so many people have died 10-20 miles from a town having gone on a hike or to camp with no idea how to be self reliant when their life depends upon it... One guy sat by a brook & slowly starved to death thinking someone would show up & rescue him... didn't even know how to build a fire & throw green material on it to make smoke for the search planes looking for him... he was less than 15 miles from a town... just waited by a brook until he died, another guy was found dead in a bathroom at a camp [offseason-winter] bcuz he did not know how to trap food, create fire, signal for help etc, the snow storm came & he was trapped when he ran out of food he starved to death... again planes were looking for him & even tho he had a rocket stove again he did not know how to build a simple signal fire or even to think of that... its sad but also ridiculous how unprepared some people are for the adventure they set out on... so in short I value everyone who is involved in educating people with the skills they need to THRIVE & not just survive the wilderness... so thanks I appreciate you... even tho I've never owned a compass & prob will never own one- for others its an important skill to learn that will save theirs or someone elses life one day & I enjoy these types of video's a ton- keep them coming!

      Absolutely agree, I wonder whether the cases you mention were people who'd lost all initiative even to try to figure something out through either total disorientation or never being encouraged to try working through a new problem transferring whatever knowledge they had from other areas of their lives. I wonder if the way our (uk, maybe usa/can too?) Education system is structured into separated subjects has some effects like this.. I notice it just within school where many kids don't make any connections from one subject to another. Thanks for your contribution to this topic.

      @@chris-terrell-liveactive My view is that it doesn't matter what you teach someone- rather its the WAY you teach them... for instance if you do not teach someone to TRANSLATE xsquared + ysquared = 25 is a CIRCLE of 5 units radius with 0,0 as its center & vice versa moving from the real object in space to it's description in algebra... then your students can pass tests & regurgitate all you & they want- but you really haven't taught them anything bcuz the whole point is teaching them to be able to think & teach themselves... that is the reason Euclid is timeless & dudes like Lincoln basically educated themselves with his 13 books of the elements of the 5 idea figures... bcuz you are not teaching them the subject standing alone... you are teaching them the scientific method, the relations & identities & how everything works together to describe reality with the language of math... so for me its not the subject matter its the failure of any teacher in any discipline to take that specific subject matter & make it canonical... instead you have a bunch of feeble minded sheeple toting their brass monkey full of disconnected canon balls... anyway whose listening to me! Thanks again & keep up the good work- what you do is valuable... give someone a fish you feed them for a day... teach them how to find the fish & how to fish & how to process fish & how to cook fish... & you have fed them for a lifetime.
