I have taken this extract from a longer video coming soon. I am aiming to demonstrate how that considering relative humidity as a factor on its own can be very misleading.

Nice Job! Great Video.
thanks for the video, hopefully a surveyor in a few years time once the degrees done
I love this. ❤❤❤❤
I love your opening of your videos.
Where can i buy that machine that measures absolute humidity?
@@Lecia-lithium there are lots available. Vaisala, Protimeter, Flir, Tramex, most survey supply companies will sell them.
what software are you using on your i pad?

I've just started my building surveying career, and I enjoy your videos very much. Please don't stop what you're doing; I really appreciate your content and the information you provide. I would highly recommend a video of all the equipment used and hopefully a link to where you purchased said equipment. It would make a great video explaining each device and the readings required for optimal conditions in the property.
Hiya, I'm recently 20 and looking into training to be a chartered building surveyor. I've looked into Sava (provides faster training) and also the 5 year degree apprenticeship. This is due to the fact that I have only 1 A level along with very strong GCSE's. My goal is to become self-employed in the trade, providing homebuyer surveys, valuations etc. Is there any advice you can provide to me on where to start/which route to take? Thank you very much for the videos you make and any advice you can provide to a young, eager prospective surveyor!
@@zackbourke5658 I think you’ll be able to become Assoc RICS on completion of the SAVA course, but you’ll need to do further study (I believe if you want to become fully chartered. If your goal is to mainly do survey and valuation work then SAVA may be the route for you. Good luck.
@westonesurveyors8139 Hi! Thank you for this guide, much appreciated. I'll do some more research into Sava. Thanks again and I'll be continuing to watch your videos!
I'm with @cel4987 on this... Excellent videos, very much appreciated. Merry Christmas and happy new year.
Appreciate all the videos and knowledge shared this year, guys. Have a great Christmas!
I presume in the last house you showed us, the roofing felt was a nylon membrane as it appears to have completely melted away. Do you think it would help if the makers managed to make it fire retardant?
Oh and those slates are 300x600mm the doubles are 600x600mm you have to cut them down to size and the bottom clips are disc rivets.
@@ianhoare289 hi and thank you for your comment. I don’t think there is any merit in making the underlay fire retardant, it is arranged over a timer framed roof, so by the time fire proofing comes into play, the roof will be well and truly on fire. There are of course fire protection measures required over party walls and to form fire compartments.
Hi. These videos are absolutely brilliant and have learnt so much from your video's, but quick question how do you know/what website would you use to find out what foundation a house is built on?. Kind regards.
Hi and thank you for your comment, essentially you can’t. If it’s a reasonably modern house you could check with the local council building control.
I'd like to see a revised edition of the Malcolm Hollis book.
@@Br-gj2ic I think it’s on version 5 now. Unfortunately I believe Mr Hollis died last year, so there won’t be any more.
I see the vast majority of books are paperback. If price was not a factor, would you recommend paperback, hardback, or digital edition?
@@dandeehancockify I prefer hardback, not a fan of digital books, but I don’t like reading off screen. I’ll print a report to read it.
Thanks for the reply. I am starting my apprenticeship in January. I am very much looking forward to it. Im 46 and want to explore every opportunity. Great channel, please continue as long as possible. @westonesurveyors8139
Amazing video! Thank you
Really good. An affinity for books and knowledge is a great companion in life.
No way u read all that
@@coolmonkey619 nope! There for reference though and I know where to find information which is half the battle!
Great very helpful 👍
That’s more books than most people have read in their lives 😅
Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings by Malcolm Holland is a good little book and one I regularly use 👍🏻
It’s in there somewhere!
I'm surprised he never mentioned that, brilliant little book
Would you explain a little more on actual humidity g/m3. What measurements are considered high / low? Thanks
We are told that if the RH% is between 40-60%, obviously allowing for temperature, etc., then that's a good place to be. I understand that actual humidity is a better number to use rather than RH, so are you able to say what would be a number that would signify that the humidity in a property, taking into account weather, temperature, etc., is at a good level?
After much researching on here learning some basics regarding this subject/s area I really followed what is being shown and said. Really like this subject I even want a hydrometer now haha . I've got a basic gadget that helps. Opening them windows , Drafs and the like will let wetter air at times enter . Hence the importance of knowledge and material building fabric and how replacing the air with dryer air is vital . Great video many thanks
9:04 How do you know the cost of repair? By referencing prev jobs? or you have quotations from contractors?
@@___Q-bot all sorts of ways. BCIS, contractors pricing, previous prices etc. it’s a start for negotiations.
Love these videos! I’m a 3rd year building surveying student and it’s really nice to see the range of defects you deal with on a day to day basis. Remember your camera mate ;)🤣
Your intro always makes me think of a pilot making an announcement 😁
As someone new to this type of work and working at a place without really any mentors. These videos are so helpful. The way you go through your decision making and explain everything is fantastic. So a big thank you from me. Do you guys recommend any Internet/book resources for further technical knowledge? I'm currently doing a hnc as it was my way into the proffesion. But it's not particularly heavy on the technical side of things.
@@cel4987 thank you for your comment. What direction are you headed after your HNC?
@westonesurveyors8139 I'm not sure yet. I am thinking maybe more residential building surveying. I'm currently doing more maintenance and responsive work for a local authority. It's not ideal, but I do get to see all sorts of defects and as an older starter, it got me in.
Always great that you show the varied day to day nature of the profession. Great insights as ever! I'm currently towards the end of my MSc in Building Surveying. I am currently working in an unrelated field of work but would like to pursue a career in Building Surveying. Do you have any advice for where to begin in the profession? Any guidance with work experience would also be appreciated. Regards, Adam
@ it can be tough, most will want experience so if you can commit to some kind of work experience, I am sure that would greatly help.
Thank you, I'm looking forward to the challenge!
Hi , My neighbour about 7 yrs ago a installed a tiny shower /toilet in the hallway near the front door never informed us @ all . 7 years later we noticed the wallpaper pealing off the wall and the wall has black mould all over obviously there was leaks in the tiles making the wall damp they were told so by a surveyer that they hired . They are refusing to compensate me for replacing the wallpaper their insurance are saying because they stopped using the shower when we told them of the problem . My question is in the act is there any provision to claim compensation from the 3 party ? Thanks .
@@josephborg5938 hi, I don’t think so as the work they have done does not fall under the act.
Thanks for your answer . My other neighbour I believe removed the chimney breast now I have hair line crackes in the plaster should they have let me know? Thanks .
Great video and I would agree with all your comments in general. However, you mentioned that Rockwool insulation can burn, the same as other insulation materials if there’s a fire in the attic. Rockwool insulation rolls are fire rated as a class A1 material, so it does not burn or contribute to a fire at all. Most other common insulation materials will burn and are not class A1.
@@dermotmcnerney8801 thank you for your comment, when you have dealt with as many fire claims as we have, believe me, it burns!
I'm a structural engineer and I do the occasional whole house survey, but mostly I'll do a specific defect survey - cracking, or roof problems etc, and when I do a whole house I do the same as you. General walk around, then outside top down the inside top down!!
Time flies when I'm enjoying your videos'🚀
Are they that bad??
Might be boring to a lot of people, but I find this kind of thing fascinating. Thanks for posting.
good call... gotta keep a totally open mind on damp problems shame we didnt see the outside... bridging can often cause a problem as we know or penetrating damp from elsewhere can also wet a wall... keep the videos going :) remember being in Pompey and seeing a tide mark up the wall all the way round, up to waist height.... where the tide was coming in?? :) not fun for the tenant customers
Very much a Dark Art not to be underestimated!
really useful reminders - thanks! am doing HA work again,, as you say need to keep a totally open mind and dont make assumptions on anythng (easily done...)

Interesting stuff here for sure. If I could learn how to be a surveyor in 3 months I'd do it as it's not just being out and about that makes it cool, it's the fact you can help somebody get to he root problem and save them being ripped off by a bad builder. You need a medal mate.
