$20 Clam Tent Covers

After a cold breezy camping trip we realized we wanted covers for out Clam walls but didn't want to spend the money for the factory ones. We made out own from four $2.00 tarps and some velcro. A week after filming we were camping again and got some pretty serious rain. The covers worked perfectly keeping everything dry inside, and the white roof on the clam let in plenty of light. Love the idea and after watching your installation video, looks pretty simple to install. What do you do if a storm rolls in? Most awnings you can take down real fast with approaching weather. Have you run into this yet?

    • @Dean-In-Milwaukee
      @Dean-In-Milwaukee 3 дні тому

      Yes, twice. Winds got so high that no awning should be left up. You just slide one end pole in, pull the awning down from the middle, then slide off the end of the third one. Takes under a minute.

    Hey Dean. We have the same clam with the OEM panels. They are a bit tighter and provide holes for the thiedown straps. One thing.. if it is windy the whole unit tends to be a little louder in the wind and it moves around a little more so staking it down is definitely necessary.

    • @Dean-In-Milwaukee
      @Dean-In-Milwaukee 11 днів тому

      We already experienced that last weekend. Winds at 20 gusting to 30, the upwind panels were popping inward. I pulled the side panels and it was still too much, so I dropped it to the ground. Our friends we were camping with didn't and their clam got broken.

      @@Dean-In-Milwaukee Thanks for sharing. Yeah in windy conditions.. the panels are not great. They should change the name of them. We like the panels when it get cold. We also sometimes flip the panels down.. sort of half doors. Now that we have our aliner though, that's ususally our go to when it's cold and windy.

    Hi Dean, I saw your video almost a year ago, great concept, I really like your simple, easy way to set up the awning. A couple of days ago my wife and I revisited the idea of coming up with a design to install an awning on our ForestRiver A-frame camper and we found your video again. Really nice. I do have a couple of questions on two pieces of hardware you are using with your design. One is, the big center washer you are using to prevent cloth to slip out during windy conditions, is this something you built yourself? I have looked for something similar at HomeDepot & Lowes and they have never seen that before. Would you mind explain what type of material this is, where is this typically used or used for, if available at the stores? If you Mfg. yourself, could you provide sine information on the material used, how you machined it, etc.? The other question is on the inner plugs or caps you are using inside the 1/2" inch conduit? The closest I have come to find is the rubber caps used on folding chairs but those are pressed in over the conduit and not inside of it. I will really appreciate if you could elaborate a bit more on those two pieces of hardware. Thanks for sharing your ideas and skills. Kind regards. Otto

    • @Dean-In-Milwaukee
      @Dean-In-Milwaukee Місяць тому

      I made them on my 3d printer from pla filament. The top one is just a simple washer shape that fits over the conduit. The pull ring keeps it from sliding off. The plugs in the ends are only there to keep the end of the conduit from scratching up your fingers and could be omitted. You could also just hammer in a rubber plug and get the same net result. Hope this helps.

    Have you had any issues with the awning wobbling around? I really like that design without stakes, but seems like the rods are telescoped the entire length

    • @Dean-In-Milwaukee
      @Dean-In-Milwaukee Місяць тому

      There is still 2ft left engaged when the awnings out, and the rods are a decently tight fit inside each other. The rods are 7ft, but the awning is 5 ft. That being said, I take it down in windy conditions like I would any other awning.

    What kind of ac is that? Was that a mod? I just bought an aliner and it doesn't have an ac and am looking for a way to add one. I want to remove the microwave that is built into a cabinet and maybe put a minisplit there. I can then remove the stock heater and put storage there.

    • @Dean-In-Milwaukee
      @Dean-In-Milwaukee Місяць тому

      It's the factory stock air conditioner on a 2014 ranger 10. I prefer it over a mini split for three reasons. It takes up less interior space as most of the mechanism is outside. It's much less expensive ( < $200 ). It's far easier to replace if there's a failure.

    • @Dean-In-Milwaukee
      @Dean-In-Milwaukee 2 місяці тому

      Quite well. Because the awning isn't sealed to the roof, strong breezes can " blow through " and reduce how hard the wind tugs. That being said I do pull it down during windstorms just to be safe.

    I recently bought a Rocket. Two "problems" with it: There's hardly any room on handlebars to mount accessories such as headlight, flasher air horn, bike computer. The gear ratio was disappointing. Not low enough to climb steep hills. No place to mount water bottle cages. I think those things can be overcome and I love recumbents. Been riding them since 1998. Thanks for the video.

    • @Dean-In-Milwaukee

      There is a place for the water bottle cages. It is on the rear of the seat and requires making two small holes in the seat fabric in the correct places. If you look closely at my video you can see where they mount.

    the amount of solar reflected is approximated by sin(angle between the solar panel) since youre using them at more than a 90 degree angle, it would make sense for the reflector to be larger, about 50% or double the size would reflect all the incidence light at 45 degrees, so maybe if the reflectics went around the back side of the solar panel too? imo aluminum foil over cardboard would be a bit better since its a flat surface.

    More good tips for Aliner mods! A word of caution; keep a close eye on the factory spare tire carrier. A few years ago a weld broke and the carrier punched a hole in the fiberglass outer shell. I always "pre-flight" the rig before hitting the road and the weld broke after about 6 hours on some rough Colorado backcountry roads. Fortunately the tire didn't come off the carrier. I upgraded the carrier by installing an after market one that fit's into the rear hitch receiver that came with the trailer. Much better.

    Thats so - so - and what we used to do. A better method is to install a J-hook flat on rear top edge of the front roof. Then use a cut-to-length webbing strap between the j-hook and an eyebolt installed on the rear bumper. And remember to put multiple twists in the webbing or the wind sill cause it to play tunes on your roof.
