Tarp & Bivy in a Northumberland Forest
I met up with Graham for a camp on a Northumberland Forest edge,
I have another look at the excellent AKASO night vision goggles,
I suffered a wet sleeping bag, first suspecting the breathable capability of the MLD bivy, but soon noticing the bottom of the bivy was solid with ice, so no membrane would breath through a solid surface of ice.

A Quick Look at my various bivys and the size they offer, As you can see with a thick winter mat your choice is limited, In the warmer weather they all work well, I always camp with a Tarp as that’s what I enjoy, So getting in and out etc rain protection etc is not covered.

Loved watching your camping experience🔥🔥
Can’t beat a cold camp for a good nights sleep. Definitely agree with stuffing the sleeping bag in loose as it goes into all the nooks and crannies 👍
I bought my RAB ascent 1100 bag direct from the manufacturers & they sold me a Lowe Alpine 15L compression sack, which halves the size of the bag in it's stuff sack. It's essential to fit everything in my pack.
Hi and thanks for watching, interesting, so Rab own Lowe alpine, I will look into the sack if I don’t get on with just stuffing it in !!! You won’t leave it in there long then as they won’t be any air Cheers Adrian
@@northumberlandmountainhopper Mine is compressed 24 hrs until I reach my Scottish campsite from Northumberland. I pitch & shake it out well upon arrival.
Zzzzzzzz
@@simonodell2103 hi thanks for watching, Meaning ? Cheers
That's a smart looking pitch, but I bet it was spiteful cold out there.
Hi and thanks for watching, glad you liked it, really cold then damp then colder lol Cheers from the bivy
Very hard walking over the Tussocks did it a lot when younger, couldn't do it now.
Hi and thanks for watching, lol it’s deadly I can still feel it now !!! Cheers Adrian
Nice one Adrian , interesting that the bivy doesn’t breathe when frozen, wouldn’t have known that.
Hi shaun, thanks for watching, The water must freeze over the pore ? Glad you liked it Cheers Adrian
British Army IS THE WORLDS BEST don't trust MLD products we had quite a number and they all failed - stitching was crap and they were neither waterproof nor breathable However each to their own...whatever works. Take care, stay well. Helen and Katarin Juska-Lat with Stella.
Hi and thanks for watching, wow, harsh indeed, poor MLD ! I value your input as a few years ago. You were the commentators (before the sad event) who suggested the army bivy, And I never looked back, but on a different note, this one as the Trailstar tarp were purchased for a specific trip, the MlD bivy as you know has the bug net and is very light at 439gr so ideal for a two week trek, I could not carry your training load lol So tell me what MLD items failed ? They are expensive for sure, Cheers from a bivy
I have an mld super light bivvy with half net. Great in summer wind open desert climate no precipitation. However in high precipitation minimal wind shoulder season with rain immediately got condensation. Started to Wet my sleeping bag so didn't use it under the tarp
Hi and thanks for the comment, be interesting to test this one fully under the tarp, Cheers Adrian
Crikey Adrian looks cold mate
Hi and thanks for watching, very cold for sure but a nice camp Cheers Adrian
Hi . With regards to the spruce trees, when originally planted the Forestry Commission would have planted these in a regular pattern. Seeds would have dropped off these original trees but wouldn't have been able to germinate due to the lack of light amongst the dense plantation. Now the planted trees have been harvested these seeds will now have a chance to grow with the availability of light, and will be forming a random dense secondary growth.
Hi and thanks for watching, This is why I love the comments, Thanks for the insight, I never thought of that, Cheers Adrian
Looked a chilling one Adrian, spot on mate 👍
Hi mick, thanks for watching, Yes cold but always enjoyable, glad you liked it Cheers Adrian
How many times must i tell you, the army bivi is the best for damp conditions. suffer the extra weight on the bivi or take a larger tarp. Think about it like this, during winter I should take an extra two kilo's, its then up to you to put the extra kilo's were you think it makes more sense. Looking forward to the Scotland trip by the way.
Hi and thanks for watching, and a telling off!!! But it’s unjustified in this instance, as on inspection the bivy top was frozen solid, the army can’t breathe through ice either !! I chose this tarp set up for speed due to the time and also I need to test the MLD bivy against the bees knees that is the army bivy, So it will be out again in similar camps lol After I have tested thoroughly we can go back to wrongs and rights Deal ! Cheers from bivy

Hi and thanks for watching Alpkit repair shop at Beth’s y coed ua-cam.com/video/TqNJEXRPlYs/v-deo.htmlsi=R5WI2cOnk0wIL8fH You can see the demo of the zip in that video I was going to have the zip on the left diagonal seem again Cheers from the bivy
Hi Adrian , can you let us know where / who is putting the zip in your MOD bivvy bag? Thanks T
Hi Adrian, Really like the video. I have a hooped bivi with a mesh hood and never thought to use it without the pole. Adding the Zip to the Alpkit is a good idea. I need to find someone here in NZ to do mine. Well done mate.
Hi and thanks for watching Glad you liked it If you are under a tarp you don’t always need the hood, but you have the mesh ready though in case of the beasts being bad I want a zip in the army bivy now It’s all money !!! Cheers from the bivy
Interesting video. I have my mat on the outside of my bivi, but use a groundsheet to keep it dry. I'm a bit too "well built" to have my mat inside with a winter bag as well.
Hi and thanks for watching, mat on the outside would be better for space, trouble is it all starts to slide about, After getting the MLD bivy for weight I realised just how really big it is, mats go inside regardless of size, so it could probably fit most people, Cheers from the bivy
I have an aquaquest hideaway bivy. Highly suggest you have a look. I use it all year round.
I'd love to know what you think of it
Hi and thanks for watching, yes it looks good but a bit narrow at the foot end @28 inch so no bigger than the army bivy’s I think my best all round bivy by far is the MLD as it’s so light and so large, Thanks for the suggestion, I love checking out all the bivy’s Cheers from a bivy
Let's be realistic that are crap. Save some money and get a good set.

Hi and thanks for watching, you have some good advice, but correct me if I am wrong the foot box is only about 46/48 cm wide in the zipped us bivy My mats are 65 cm wide Hence my choices Please advise if I am correct or incorrect as the price is good Cheers from a bivy

@ hi and thanks Will have to see if I can fit in one with the mat Prior to paying for a zip ! Cheers
Great to see other people’s set ups!
Hi and thanks for watching Glad you liked it Cheers from the bivy
All bivy bags are based on military-issued bags. The military uses closed-cell sleeping mats. The sleeping system is designed for the closed-cell sleeping mat to be placed inside the bivy bag. Closed-cell sleeping mats can be used in the Artic winter with no real issues. Placing the bivy bag on top of an air mat will cause you to slide off it during the night while you're sleeping! Snugpak Stratosphere bivy would not solve the issue if you slept on an air bed, as you would be in the same situation. If you wanted to use an air mattress, you would need a lightweight tent, Lanshan 1, or something similar.
Hi and thanks for watching, I nearly always put the mat inside, as you say, stops you sliding off, very rare to get a dead flat spot, the thick winter mat is too tight in the BIVY’S but the MLD bivy gives the space for even the winter mat, might have a look at the issue roll mats, be nice and strong, Cheers from the bivy
Great set ups. I have a carinthia observer. A British army gortex and I’ve just purchased a hunka for lighter summer days 👍
Hi and thanks for watching, the observer is pricy but great for sure, Dutch army probably best value, Hunka is great but gets so wet ! See my many vids ! MLD seems well breathable so far so will be my preference for light camps, if it stands up to the use, you can’t fault the army bags at all, Cheers from the bivy
Nice gear
Hi and thanks for watching Cheers from the bivy
Hahaha miss my PNG's mate 😂, I personally would say dead weight in Real World Sitc's and space,,prb's would be better off with a thermal Moncal witch I use mate ,, but good luck with them and looking forward to seeing if they hold up after few months use 👍⛺ boss video good effort, all the best Danny 👍
Hi and thanks for watching, Glad you liked the effort, reviews are hard ! Like you say, it’s carrying them around, Certain camps only I feel, where there are deer, Or night walks with the kids Cheers
Hi mate other boss video 👍 good few bags there 😁 ,, I would use the British Army bivvy bag and a head net for migies for Scotland you'll have no Dramz , I was based there in Redford Barracks (were in dregorn now ) for 9 years and change,, I would also never use a compression sack mate (dead weight and space) just put bivvy and sleeping bag as if using and stuff at bottom of burgen ,, also would always keep mat out of bivvy mate 👍 know I'm Army but trust trust me(especially using Rab 1100 ) you'll definitely have more comfort and movement easy,, 😊 just experience mate 🪖😂,, yeah but Scotland's really good outdoor wild camp ,, would definitely take Rab 1100 all year round temp drop can catch ya out 🥶,, thanks again for video mate boss effort 👍 Danny 🪖
Hi and thanks for watching, glad you liked it, some good tips from a pro, I have tried stuffing the sleeping bag straight in but it never compresses as much, I will have to try again, I can get comfortable with the Rab 1100 if using the green mat, but now I have the winter mat I have to use the MLD bivy, which is roomy for sure but nowhere near as warm as the army bivy’s, perhaps I will try the mat underneath again. Cheers from the bivy
Sleeping pad review next
Hi and thanks for watching, I only have the two ! Cheers
Woke up to this new vid - thanks Adrian. Great comparison. Spot on. The volume is what always gets me - means a much larger pack. Some gear thoughts for you to mull on during your Scottish walk - I know you love tarps but by the time you move into an enclosed silstar tarp and either the MLD soul or the Dutch army hooped bivvies you areat the level where single walled tent configurations might be an option to consider - with the doors open they are about the same. even with a breathable shell cover for your bag they are equivalent to the set ups you are looking at but half the weight even in silnylon, and half the volume. Alternatively, a light double walled tent can provide equivalent at less weight/volume - again with doors open they are equivalent to the winter rig you use.
Hi and thanks for watching, glad you liked it,some good thoughts there, MLD bivy at 439 gr can’t be beat, then 530 for the trailstar, 200 for a groundsheet, my only worry is if the wind turns and lifts the tarp I could be wet and I am out for two weeks, I have a Vango F1 helium tent at 1300 gr and also the F2 at 1400 gr so that’s my options, I am at a point where I can’t purchase any more gear for the trip, tent makes more sense I know, but I love the tarps, The Trailstar does feel like a tent to be fair, as would a 3x3 tarp set up in the mushroom configuration, I will probably wait for a forcast the night before I set off and make a decision, knowing it can still change !!! Cheers from a bivy
@@northumberlandmountainhopper understand - if you can afford it a durston xmid in silnylon is affordable and lighter Then there are options from gossamer gear, Henry shires, zpacks etc - it depends on the budget Small double walled tents do not have to be expensive when in silnylon - less room but more weather proof - and you can get them around 1kg (eg nemo) Plenty of options these days
@@Asdf-789yes plenty of good tents but I would use the F2 as I have it, as long as I keep to 15or so kg it’s ok Would not use a new tent very often, Can always sell on I suppose One drawback with both my Trailstar and the Durston is the large footprint Cheers
@@northumberlandmountainhopper yep - I still use my zpacks solo The durston mid footprint is 100”x67” or 2.5m x 1.7m - plus room for guys to stakes
Nice bit of kit Adrian I bought some last year they aren't as good as the ones you got atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Hi Jimmy, thanks for watching, They are good for sure, More kit to carry unfortunately, I will only take them to camps where there is a chance of deer, as it’s all weight !! I can’t carry your loads lol Cheers from a bivy

Nice to see diffrent bivvis , i got the bitish army and dutch and the us army . Like the zips and use all of them with the mat outside. Bug protection is awsome. The hooped is my favourite but heavy.
Hi and thanks for watching,I use mine with the green 3r mat inside and have space, but nowhere near enough space If I use the winter mat, then it’s either the MLD bivy or put the mat outside, without doubt the Dutch hooped bivy is the best by far, it’s strong, breathable, warm, no bugs, can have the hood down with a tarp, It does not slide about, only drawback is the weight but with a tarp it’s still only 2kg Be interesting to see how this MLD lasts as it has most of the features except strength and warmth, Cheers from a bivy

I think they’re actually pretty good- they work
Hi Graham, don’t think the comment was about these goggles, which as you say, work well Cheers
It’s a great video good advice it’s always good to have a comparison
Hi and thanks for watching Glad you enjoyed it Cheers from the bivy
The dutch hooped bivvy is a very good bivvy. I remember last summer I forgot to check the weather. Well it pissed down most of the night 😂😂 I had no tarp over the top of me. Pools of water on top of the bivvy and I only got wet whilst getting out. Good piece of kit👍
Hi and thanks for watching, Yes the army goretex or three layer laminate are spot on, even with the water on them they breathe Cheers from the bivy
Interesting kit Adrian, loving the MLD, I’ve been using an OEX Salamanda for a while, basically a knock off version of the Rab ridge raider hooped bivvy with a couple of tweeks, plenty of room even got a vent at the foot end so not had too much probs with condensation so far as you can get good air flow, front loader though 😂 - cheers for sharing, keep it up mate
Hi and thanks for watching, It gets harder to get in and out from the top, and if under a tarp even harder, hence why I have gone for zips, The MLD although very good will it last ? I am basically saving it for my Scotland trip and will then use it extensively to see how it lasts. Zips, bug net, hoop and all for 439gr So it is a good bit of kit. Cheers from the bivy
Good to see the difference sizes and weight, thank you for sharing this video…. Ady
Hi and thanks for watching Glad you enjoyed it cheers from the bivy
Great video Adrian, got to admit the bivvy for me is the Dutch army with a rab4 , they wiegh a but cant beat it 👍👍
Hi and thanks for watching, the Dutch bivy is bomb proof and does it all for sure, If I could guarantee a flat pitch and could put the mat under the bivy it would be my winter bivy, as I often seek odd places to bivy I need the mat inside so it stays put ! A decent winter tent weighs far more and is not as safe as the hooped bivy in a storm, Cheers from a bivy
Good to see the different setups Adrian. I got the wife to stitch a zip into my army goretex bivvy bag, what a difference it's made. Also stitched in some elasticated material around the hood so it now closes and hugs your head. I took out the drawstring as it was useless. Cheers.
Hi and thanks for watching, Zip great idea, but it’s rare I pull the hood tight as nearly always under a tarp Cheers from the bivy
Very useful to see kit comparisons like this. You would need a good thick footprint to protect it but what is your opinion of keeping your mat outside the Bivy?
Hi and thanks for watching, glad you liked it, I don’t mind the mat outside if under a tarp, but it’s very rare I get a flat pitch so putting it inside stops movement, And the times I use a small tarp, if rain lands on the mat, it has been known to leak/ condense on the inside the Hunka due to a reduced breathable effect, But yes if it’s flat not a problem Cheers from the bivy
Great information and advice. Thanks.
Hi and thanks for watching Glad you liked it Cheers from the bivy
Thanks Adrian,love all the gear.
Hi and thanks for watching Glad you liked the kit Cheers from the bivy
I remember my very first camp on windy gyle in an orange bivi bag about 1985 I think. Lots of condensation in the morning but soon dried and had a great 3 days.
Hi and thanks for watching, lol sounds like when I use the Hunka Plenty of moisture !!! Cheers from the bivy
Good information thanks Adrian
