Everything he said are true. Not just Toyota but at other dealership as well. I quited the dealership after 4 years. The first 1 was the hardest. Mostly all I get was warranty job. I finally make some decent money after the 2nd year however, I don't like the kiss as structure. After I quite, I went and opened my own shop and never look back.

Ended up in management for the final two years trying to make a difference and still had a manager above me pulling the same shit. When I first graduated Tech School my teacher lined up an entry level tech job for me at a Dealership. I was a young 18 yr old kid but knew how to do brake jobs, oil changes, etc. For 3 months management kept telling me they were going to start me in training classes for a Tech meanwhile they kept ordering me around to clean and vaccum cars and medial stuff....not the position I was hired for. One tech would ask me to help him with things which I did and Id get reprimanded doing the job they told me I was supposedly hired for. The 3rd month in they laid me off after wasting my time like an errand boy. I went back and told my instructor who sent me there and he was furious. I did learn some valuable lessons there like not to be so trusting and not everyone has your best interests at heart. I witnessed first hand salesman almost getting into fist fights screaming in each others faces. Ugly experience that steered me away from that type of career. Ive worked for independent garages that were alright but I think going forward I would only ever work for myself...it can be a greedy, cut throat business that brings out the worst in some people. People have little idea what it takes to be a skilled tech, the knowledge, experience and investment in tools and technology that are always changing. I believe over the next 5 yrs we will see how few good techs are left and the ones still in business will have a waiting list of months if not years long. Appreciate you posting this video you deserve better and hope you find it!

I am a class A interprovincial mechanic, I worked the bench for many years. I was a service manager in several dealerships. I would not have a service advisor who didn’t have mechanical knowledge. People need to wake up! Upselling is standard practice today. Using a service advisor without knowledge of an automobile to upsell customers is not acceptable! As a service manager I never advised a customer to have unrequired repairs. I liked straight time shops, where our mechanics got paid for the time they worked. Flat rate shops only encourage mechanics to speed up their work often causing failure in workmanship. I always tried to make sure each mechanic was given a fair amount of the work. Naturally there are better mechanic’s who are better at diagnostics in certain areas. Those mechanics who are skilled would be like specialists who do drive line work, or major engine work. For the most part general repairs which are not so technical should be share fairly. He is right Warranty work should not be put on on technician, because it does pay as much, it must be shared. Dealerships have become extremely greedy. I went on into sales, and eventually ran a dealership. Today dealerships bring dealership principles together and share the numbers, embarrassing those principles whose numbers are low. I have never owned a new car, the newest car I would buy would be a three year old with good maintenance records. The first three years of ownership are highly inflated. You can buy manufacturers warranty at the very end of the initial warranty period. Never buy add on packages when you purchase a car, they often make more money on these packages then the sale of the car. If you can always arrange finances yourself through your bank, or know and be prepared to walk if the interest rates are not what you can get through your bank. Be a smart buyer, and have a good mechanic who can do maintenance for you, using OEM factory filters, and oil. As long as the maintenance is performed by a licensed technician using OEM parts they must honour your warranty. Be smart!!!!

We thank you for sharing your experience with a Toyota dealership as a tech. As you did already; you're not being treated fairly, you leave. Now, not all shops mistreat you. Look around and you will find a good shop and before long, you'll have your own shop. Next time your boss says to you, what are you doing, the floor needs sweeping. Tell him you need Vaseline. When he says why, tell em I'll shove the broom up my ass and it will sweep the floor as I repair the car. Two jobs at the same time. Hang in there.

Hahahaha if anyone is working on cars to make "lots of money" they are dumb. But you are right lack of education/information is the #1 cause of "loading the parts cannon" and just seeing if replacing the part associated with a code fixes the problem. Less than 25% of the time you will pull a code, look it up and replace the part associated with the code and solve a problem. Unfortunately its actually very difficult to get actual (accurate) wiring diagrams or schematics and specifications on electronic parts off the internet. Without a factory service manual (expensive) or a monthly subscription to a automotive repair library (also very expensive) its difficult to trace and identify electrical issues. Typical "repair manuals" are junk they don't give you any worthwhile information. Hell even with all the information you need it can still be difficult and time consuming to find/fix electrical problems. Unfortunately since electrical issues are at least 50% of the problems you see while working on modern cars this can be frustrating for the mechanic and customer. With some knowledge you can make sure some electronic components are not totally fried but without the specs on voltage/resistance for that specific part its just an educated guess. The days of fixing most car problems with basic tools and a good mind for mechanical systems are gone.

I took the insight an inside info I learned working for the corporate A holes and went out on my own and experimented with different businesses of my own- found one 30 plus years ago and I am retiring this year at 65 after 30plus years of being my own boss by giving customers better quality service . Life is hard sometimes, and no place has streets paved with gold. But other companies crappy service is a opportunity for anyone wanting to strike out on their own and give better service than the nightmare dealerships. Many car companies and dealers are in big trouble now from years of terrible customer service.

Cry me a river. 1) No contracted cleaning company cleans the shop. You need get a grip on reality, 2) work that was recommended before, goes back to the technician that recommended it. If you’re new, your pipeline of recommendations hasn’t worked its way back to you yet. 3) as a trained technician, nobody should have to teach you how to use a tire machine or a brake lathe. 4) Unless you totally suck, as a technician, you’ll never lose your job. 5) Service advisors require a lot of training and are held accountable on hours they sell. 6) it sounds like you didn’t have a good dispatcher. 7) it requires a lot of time to hone your skills as a technician. 8) bad warranty times are part of the deal, it sucks, nothing you can do. 9) customer-pay hours pay better, that’s where you make your time. Lots of technicians make a lot of money. 10) maybe the dealership wasn’t ran well, not all dealerships are ran poorly. Shame on you for trying to berate all dealerships for your bad experience.

Number “ 5”tells me you are a service advisor not a tech. Of the HUNDREDS of advisors I worked with maybe five percent were worth a shit but most still made more than I did as a top tech. Not to mention the parts guys who would all have to flip the screen around so I could point out everything. AFTER having to tell them three times they were in the wrong system category. That guy making more than me too. I quit Ford dealers six years ago because of guys like this. Best decision I ever made. I spent twenty years honing my craft and becoming a machine. Always training, always buying tools. JOGGING through the lot to get cars. So they could hire guys like the dude in the video with no certs and feed him all the gravy. They pay them a much lower rate than me then feed him the gravy. I could have flagged 150 hours a week doing “quick service” at the last dealer I worked at. Those dudes maybe made 50 but were still out-flagging me. In the end I was struggling to flag 7 hours a day. Working on a MKZ moon roof with white interior that isn’t designed to be taken apart. Given to me because they didn’t trust those clowns with it even though they would bust out gravy moonroofs all day. All the while I have three engines in various states of tear down waiting on parts and jamming out a DPS6 trans in a Focus/Fiesta (the only thing I was flagging good hours on. They still tried to take them away. But the losers kept breaking too much stuff). Mustang 3.7 water pumps were failing. A TSB came out that paid like 1.0 to change them. We were getting a bunch and I could have the job done dispatch to hanging up keys in 30 minutes. So they started funneling them to quick service while I’m doing a short block in a 1.0 focus for 9.2 hours and having to wait six weeks for parts. Then we go into our monthly meeting and the service manager hands out performance bonuses to the slugs for hours flagged and kisses their asses. Most of their hours were off the loss leader “works package” $49.99 for oil change and rotation. You may thing I’m just a whiner who couldn’t hang. Naaaa. I would say I’m top ten percent in speed and diagnostic ability of all the techs I’ve ever worked with. There are better than me. I worked with some elite dudes but I hung with them. The dealer game was great when I started in the 90’s. Everybody made money. Then corporations took over and ruined it all. Claiming they respect their techs while every one of their decisions made it harder for me to earn a living. Meanwhile paying slug service advisors and parts people top dollar. Don’t get me wrong. Good advisors and parts people are worth their weight in gold but they were few and far between. I’ve been hourly at a fleet for five years and it’s great. Consistent pay. 40 hours a week. It’s less gross but more per hour because I’m not working 55 hours a week anymore. With more time for the side hustle I make more money with still less hours worked. Dealer tech has become a scam. I would never tell a kid to do that these days. He goes to UTI and runs up $50k in loans then drops $50k on tools. Starts out $100k in debt and they want him to make $50k a year. That is every dealers goal. To have top certified master techs making $50k a year while they charge $225 an hour for their services. Scam!

I tried working at a Dealership, it lasted 10 months. It was easy to see pretty quickly that being honest would not pay well in their system. They pay so low that anyone who is entirely honest will be working for minimum wage. Meanwhile the most dishonest there make the biggest pay checks and are considered Elite in the shop. Seems that getting paid for work you don't do makes you more efficient. Smh Not sure if you can blame them when the manufacturers want to pay .6 for a two hour job. At the independent shops you at least have some leverage if you're good at your job.
