I am not sure what the orange metallic shade will cost, but it was rather expensive “back in the day”. Fortunately, there are alternatives that will work and probably will hold up better than the original single stage paint, which was difficult to match up because it was so prone to sun fade and it had the added problem of being high in metallic flakes but the paint itself was a tinted clear that depended upon the metallic to “build the color effect”. It really sucked to spray this one! The easy alternative would be to use the modern tri coat shade of molten orange that was recently offered on the ford Fiesta ST. The paint shades are extremely close but the molten orange sprays more easily because it’s high solids formula and the base color covers the primer easily and the metallic finish doesn’t have the task of hiding anything beyond providing the sparkle effect. The clear coat adds a high degree of protection for the lifespan of the paint color that the old single stage paint could never have provided.
The 1.6 HO/ 5 speed power train was most commonly found in EXP and Escort wagons. Those were determined to be the ones that most needed the extra performance. The dealership i was working at was owned by a gentleman who liked the EXP and had a black, early 82 as his personal car. when the 83's came out he had a bright red one as soon as the HO was available. we were getting HO 5 speed wagons before we got any HO EXP. my guess would be that the proximity of the Wayne , Michigan assembly plant was the reason for the lag in HO EXP arriving to our dealership. The underwhelming performance of the basic 1.6 cvh was the impetus for the development of so many iterations and power output levels as well as the development of turbocharged versions. Both Roush and McClaren were contracted to develop higher output versions. Needless to say, Ford was having some issues getting up to speed with what the customer expected from their first domestic front wheel drive small car.
@@saintlouis6798 the delayed arrival would be because 90%+ of the 82-83 EXPs & LN7s came from St Thomas and a very few from San Jose. Then for 84-88 they moved production entirely to Wayne. 1.6 HOs came out March 82 but yeah the 5-speeds weren't until the 83s were then were standard for EXPs for 84-85 (I think this was the same story for the 84-85 wagons too, mandatory HO). Well what's funny is the 1.6 (and even 1.1, 1.3, & 1.4 CVH) all had a number of different iterations in Europe with most out performing ours so I always assumed Ford was deadset on providing fuel economy with performance second. And a lot of it was just in the normal tuning, tweak the timing a tad and boom shaved a second off the 1/4 mile haha I don't get upset over the power figurea in these, just glad the HO existed so its higher compression pistons and better cam are available to the aftermarket to hop up lesser 1.6s, just those pistons+cam+header+carb, and basic port work tuned properly yield a total of 100hp in these 2200lb cars - 5-speed is a must though lol
Cool
Is that one going to be refinished in the original color? Of all the early EXP the green ones are special. That was the feature color at the Introduction of the EXP and it was a one year and done availability. As is the case with many cars that were offered in somewhat unique or unusual color shades, the original novelty of it was lost by the time it needed to be repainted and the cost of the special color was too much for the owner.
@@scottbrown7415 yep! Back to Bright Metallic Green! The metallic green, blue, and orange of 1982 are all spectacular! I'll have one of each and hopefully one day a plain yellow (82) and plain orange (83) 😀
My first car was a 85 EXP in Orange. 5 speed, no AC or PS. Loved that car.
Do you ever get these cars running? Unlike the GM J cars, ford didn’t offer power windows until at least 1991. Unfortunately this ole gal it’s saveable from what I’ve seen. This escort had the automatic special value package
@@Skyhawk1987Turbo over time yep, but that's after they get all new everything mechanical (& electrical where possible) otherwise you waste a lot of time & supplies reviving something that needs replacing any ways. I got a series of videos of my first EXP restoration and then 3 others I'm part way through, the next couple weeks will show big milestones for my red Escort wagon and my silver '83 EXP 😀 No this one is shot, absolute goner. NEVER seen any car fight so hard against anyone, ironic with how poor condition it is. Almost regret getting it it was so bad, but its destiny lies in other cars it will be able to save 🙂
@@Skyhawk1987Turbo Im sure these would have got electric windows if the platform started later, they weren't made with them in mind so no provisions were ever made for electric window switches or hardware - when these got speakers in the doors that alone was a big change for the platform, and again with the electeic mirrors haha There's just no room in the doors for the motors at the time
Auto Auction Rebuilds channel has an EXP 82 or 83 that he picked up at Copart or IAA.Randy never keeps anything so it will probably go up for sale if you are interested..Looks to be in good shape other than the wire wheels on it.I saw it on his $400 Dodge Dynasty video from today 10/11/24
Back in the day, ford was offering a package deal on the EXP that paired Premium sound and the sunroof options in what was called a “Sun & Sound package”. More than a few Escort GT buyers were rather disappointed that ford didn’t offer a factory optional sunroof on the 85.5 and newer Escorts in any trim level. That was kind of a head scratcher for the sales people who very often could step right outside the door and let a potential buyer sit in a “Sun & Sound equipped EXP but couldn’t create an equivalent level of options on a new Escort GT. We thought it strange that ford eliminated the option altogether on the new design GT when it had been a very, very popular option for the recent GT, almost to the point of being an expected feature of the Escort GT from 1983 to mid 1985.
That original green under that blue is one of the best EXP colours.
I would love an LN7👍
I have a pretty massive literature collection. My advice is store them upright in a dry area. Ensure silverfish etc can’t access the material. A filing cabinet with suspension files is good and for larger literature I put them in a large plastic storage bin with a lid.
Hi. I just found and Subscribed to your channel. I love the EXP. I have a very low mileage blue 82 model. I haven’t put it on my channel yet. I’d like an LN7 one day. 👍
Me and my grandfather used to buy these by the dozens at Auction back in the late 80s and early 90s …most of them had blown head, gaskets or broken timing belts. They were so cheap and easy to fix with used parts and we would sell them so quickly those were the good old days fast money. In 1991 I bought a 19 88 1/2 GT at a repo auction for $1600. It was towed through needing a clutch and it had 88,000 miles. We put a new clutch in it new tires cleaned it up new tie rod on the front suspension and I drove that thing to 145,000 miles and sold it, close to 2500 bucks I believe. It was a fun drive car!
Don’t suppose you have parts for sale?
@@MrGreen-hx8lp a few! So far only 81-90 Escort/Lynx, just what's on this list: www.feoa.net/posts/1116183/

In the 80s were some of the ugliest American compacts . Japan was kicking our ass on duel overhead cams and fuel ejection that we even had to substitute Isuzu and Mazda engines in our fleet just to compete with Toyota and Nisan .
Looking forward to seeing it done!
McLaren was doing a lot of contract work for Ford regarding performance improvements to their engines during the early eighties. Ford had a lot of trouble with turbo engines in the 79 Mustang and they were exploring various options for getting a better performance package for their cars. Eventually, McClaren did release a very limited run of heavily modified Mustangs that were basically homologation units to qualify that particular version for IMSA road racing competition. ASC’s involvement was piggybacked onto the project as the design team for the appearance package that Ford would be trying to present as part of the performance package that would become the EXP turbo coupe.
Just found this channel. I had a few of these back in the day. I actually liked all the ones I had. I'm not sure if you watch auto auction rebuilds, but he just got an 82 exp that looks in good shape but he hasnt made a video about it yet. Maybe you can help him with a few parts or advice? I figured it couldn't hurt to bring it up
When I was in private highschool, Ford motor company donated a early 80s non VIN 5door Escort to our school. It was a complete running car, except it was beige epoxy primered ( no paint). My understanding is,our school had to pay for shipping. Even then, seemed so crude compared to the American made Honda Accord and American made Nissan Sentra which were also donated.
@@dmcnamara9859 yeah it's kind of interesting, many Escorts are cheap as can be but many are pretty dang nice. For 80s cars even the cheapies are decent machines, better than what the base 1990s Fords would be 😬
@@The_1982_EXPertWell,the American 1990 Escort was based on the Mazda 323 Platform, but lacking the refinement of an actual Mazda. Just like the American built Ford Focus, same evolved Mazda 3 platform but a 180 in refinement and build quality than the European Focus that was made in Germany.
@@dmcnamara9859 1991+ for the Mazda Escorts yes, 1990 (identical to my 88.5 in the video) was still the 81 Ford-only platform I've been in a couple of those Focus' & 90s Escorts, VERY hard, brittle plasticy in every corner 😬
A surprising amount of mods for an early 80's "aftermarket" for an economy car. That kind of acceleration would've been noticeably good for the day. V8's were leaving the factory with 140hp and more weight. My driver's ed car was a plain 82 Escort auto. At 27mph it would shift up and down gears continuously. Probably needed a t.v. cable adjustment.
@@pgtmr2713 yeah pretty good spec considering it's in a 2100lb car, about the same power to weight as the same year 5.0 Mustang. I daily EXPs closer to stock form, stock 70hp is poor (much better with the 4.05 final drive though) but thanks to just the economy-based tuning reaching 100hp is really easy and thanks to the low weight that mere 100hp goes a long way (of course even better ince you reach the 120hp mark, 150hp is pretty easy for all of these even without turbos), makes them keep up with today's cars no problem 👍
I love that you are trying to save these kinda cars. The cars that everyone had, but they didn't care about them, they were worth nothing, and now they're all but gone. Good luck with restoring some of those! Shame the escort is so far gone.
In the '80s, it seemed like every other car on the road was a Ford Escort. Now you barely see them at all. I wonder if they'll develop a cult following the the VW Beetle?
@@freestang6662 there's an impressive following now still and it's pretty odd, it seems there's more demand than there are cars - mostly people looking to replace the ones they had as first cars, and with how many ways you could get these 80s cars it's a needle in a haystack just trying to get the bodystyle AND year range AND trim AND color of a car you previously had. The devotion is really strong too because parts availability is now less than VW Beetles even but we all persist. It's astonishing how there were 3.5 MILLION Escorts in North America from just these 1981-1990 models (not even including the Mercury Lynx) and in less than 20 years later they went to the verge of extinct! Thanks for your time!
Good job man!
Are you keeping the escort wagon in the video?
@@georgenenstiel3638 yep! Been slowly sorting out the registration and restoration, it's got its own series of videos too haha
It's wild seeing people saving 80s and 90s cars now myself
My dad had a red 89 and a gold 90 escort lx coupes I can remember riding in them
Less talking more action. Don't need to know about every little thing about the car. If you are going to fix it then do it. If not then don't waste our time as viewers just talking about it.
@@norman7396 sorry you feel that way, until now everyone's been asking me for longer videos. Thought the story of how the hecl we got home the impenetrable car was pretty interesting
Really don't like when creatir break their video into many episodes. Known channels knewd that viewers very much don't like it.
Same here, I prefer one & done when possible! Not to mention all the ads that pursue between them 😕 Hope you enjoyed, was quite the long story - wish I was able to film the whole process, was frustrating to do but pretty entertaining looking back on it lol
escorts , chevette's and Omni's were Bic lighters of cars as in when they break you through them away
I like ur content
That car has the dashboard and the mirrors with the wire harness you need for the 88 EXP! You will want to save the lock cylinders and ignition cylinder for that one I think that 89 is when ford went to the ten cut key as opposed to the five cut key, which means that this one has just one key for the door, ignition and the hatch lid.
@@scottbrown7415 we'll see if any of the wiring survived, keep in mind various forest animals were living in this the last 15 years and unknown amount of water has entered it before and after I broke the windshield and rolled down the windows last month. Correct, thought it was 8-tumbler? Anyways yes one key for all doors which would be swell in any of my other cars The problem is I still can't get in the car to extract those without destroying the locks 😳🫠 The older cars have the rear cylinder retainer exposed for me to get into the hatch much easier but I don't even have that option here....
That one has been sitting in place for around fifteen years. The amount of vegetation and the accumulation of dead leaves is very heavy!
Nice score I just saw the title and was so jealous. Keep these beauties alive
You lucky bastard. How the hell did you come across this gem. If you want to sell the driver side door I'm in need. My 87 GT took one in the cheek need a door with power mirror
@@chrisparrott348 did you watch the whole video? This car has been the complete opposite of luck, I've never seen a car fight so dang hard to not be saved. And it's no jem either, 15 years of moisture, natural decay, and a LONG list of different animals living inside every inch of this car. Literally everything I've tried touching fell apart or is rusted shut 😳 Definitely no saving this one, not in my wildest dreams The doors are going to be toast but if I can get them off sure, have at 'em!
Hello! I'd like to start by saying thanks for so many very informative videos on these cars! I picked up a super clean 87 exp this summer. It's a totally rust free, 1 owner car (before me of course). The previous owner only drove it in the summer time. Last time they had it on the road was 2021. He, apparently, had a couple different shops looking at the car to figure why it has no fire. I'm not sure what they did to examine the issue but they never figured it out. Since I have gotta it I've replaced the ignition control module and the coil. I got a new pick up coil yesterday. Today I went to replace it and can't figure out how to get the distributor apart once I got it off the engine. Any chance you can tell me how to get that apart?
Hey glad to be of service! ANYTHING to keep these cars ticking! Been meaning to do a video of completely rebuilding each type of distributor because replacements are now no longer available :/ You're welcome to email me at The1982EXPert@gmail.com - there's a few different distributors for these so we'll want to shoot photos back and forth to make sure you're getting the exact info you need. Thanks Joe!
Think I still have the 1982 brochure for the LN7.My parents purchased a 1982 Cougar station wagon late in the model year and while they were doing the deal I browsed in the showroom and grabbed brochures for the Capri and LN7.
Had an early EXP or maybe it was an LN7, rental, picked up in Denver for a 2 week roadtrip to western Canada and Alaska. Once in Fairbanks we found out the haul road to Prudhoe Bay along the new pipeline was open to the public. Since gas stations might be far apart we bought a 5 gallon gas can to store in the back, and filled it up before leaving. All throughout the trip I could smell gas, but though it was normal since the back was all open. The drive was fine and I never had to use that gas, so after getting back to civilization, I decided to take that gas to fill the tank. I go to the back to lift it out, and nearly flung it across the parking lot, as the 35 pound can I was expecting was actually empty. Turns out the gas I was smelling all throughout the trip was from a leak in the can. The trunk mat was pretty well soaked in gas too. Thinking back, if there were no gas stations in range, we could have been stuck for days, and even more frightening, if so much as a spark went of back there, the car could have pretty much blown up.
@@atikovi1 woah holy moly! If you were a smoker boy you were living on borrowed time lol
Now has anyone swapped the 2.3 RWD into a EXP?
@@gamersgrubs2952 there's a LOT of RWD V8 swaps out there because the rear end easily accepts a Fox Body axle and the engine compartment is large enough front to back. RWD swap is one of my contemplations with that new Mustang as a donor.... Problem is I'd really want a manual transmission and more power, 88hp+120ftlb is pretty weak for a 3,000lb Stang when the same year EXP was 2,200lb with 90hp+100ftlb or 115hp+110ftlb
@The_1982_EXPert what about doing the 2.3 and Boost it. SVO Mustang style but bugger HP obviously
Ln7 ln7
What's the fascination with those cars? I mean they're ugly as all fk. It would be different and ok if those headlights weren't like rhat and it had a rear spoiler with a GT on the side and a 351 under the hood. Yeah, a mustang, the real deal. I wasn't born when my first car was made, it was a 73 Saleen gt 5.0 prototype, not many made. I could pull out in the road and hit the gas and the car would just spin tires, not even move 5 ft. Oh, I so miss that car.
@@Edwarddiaz21 EXPs eventually adopted the Escort front end for 86-88 but those while being mechanically superior were far less popular (and still are). I actually have one now, much closer to the Fox Body cosmetically but they're lacking character. They're a car you have to see in person and get a chance to drive, they're tremendous fun inside and out whether you like the frog eyes or not. My folks aways had a couple when I was pretty young, my whole life I had never seen any others so between the uniqueness, rarity, fond memories, the cheerful+sporty bodywork, the fun driving, economical ownership, and easier maintenance there's almost nothing I dislike. As I got closer to getting my license I eventually I started bringing one back into shape as my first car and it became my first restoration through high school and college. That EXP has been my go-to car ever since following me everywhere I go - it even got on national television! My fascination since then has only grown, and it's EXPonential lol
Sweet Vid!
My 87 EXP sport is fully loaded.. except a rear defrost... it's the first time I've seen one without! So weird!
I’m assuming none of these run
@@Skyhawk1987Turbo a few, most were parked for bodywork so should fire up fine - problem is relying on 40 year old machines without any preventative work is extremely ignorant+foolish. I went through 3 EXPs top to bottom mechanically and daily drive 2 of them, also slowly going through the red Escort wagon to add that to my daily driver roster. The ones I've gone through have yet to be unreliable in any way 🙂
yeah a friend of mine owned this when we in high school in the early 80's. I thought it was a bad car then too! the EXP
I had 2 Escort GTs from the 80s. I would love to come across another one.
You should also start collecting ZX-2’s since they’re essentially a 90’s/early 2000’s EXP. Test drove one brand new, what an awful car lol. Glad I went with a civic. Kudos to you for saving such oddball vehicles 😂
@@barrykehoe996 my first time ever seeing one was when a classmate drove a 2002 ZX2 to high school one morning, had to look it up but yeah it was in every way a late 90s EXP but with back seats. Ever since I've been on the hunt but they're all rotted out autos where I live 😥 Sadly your complaint is very common amongst the Zetec Fords in North America, if you don't have an SVT you got the wrong Zetec. My parents had a 5-speed Zetec Escape (RARE) and it was terrible, they also had an automatic Zetec Contour loaner which was even worse haha If I can get an SVT Focus swapping that Zetec in an EXP is on my bucket list 😀
Great video. I love the EXP coverage.
@@edensker thanks much! If there's anything in particular tou want to see let me know!
One of my favorites because it was fun to drive and TBH, I can't remember what I did with it! LoL
No one has ever mistaken my exp for a mustang! lol!! you must live in some way out place where people don’t see any vehicles
@@guyww8516 ha! You'd definitely be surprised then, my whole life people have been saying "Hey is that a Mustang/Capri?" at every other stop lol Up in Wisconsin both are rare sights - ESPECIALLY EXPs/LN7s so what's the closest thing to them? Gotta give them credit for trying at least 🙂
I thought that the car I had my eye on as a fifteen year old was a differently bodied Mustang for a long time until I rode in one and looked it over. This was 1992 or so, we didn't have any immediate reference materials. I just thought it was a 2 seater Mustang until I could actually touch an EXP in person. I was disappointed, but I still do love that car. Escorts were pretty good cars for their time.
