Disassembling A 6BT Cummins Turbo Diesel Cylinder Head For An 80 Series Land Cruiser
In this video I finish torquing down the crankshaft and connecting rod bolts as well as performing a piston protrusion test. We primarily look at the condition of this used head that came with a $600 12 valve Cummins engine I bought. We've already found cracks in the head. Should we clean it up and run it?

piston squirters - did you put in new ones, or check the old ones were ok. One of those things that can not be missed with a Cummins.
Yup they’re all there and in good condition!
Who gets these for -20 temps? Nobody
I think you should use 37s for tires this time around.
Yeah I’m thinking 37s as well, I’m probably going to do a 2 inch lift and trim the flares
A stove with that much glass probably doesn’t hold heat that well.
So get a different stove that doesnt need as much tending to
Injectors - I turned my 9mm injectors to fit in my new 7mm head. now the issue I have with my engine is it farts or pulses through the intake. No one has an explanation but I suspect the power stroke compression is getting past the gasket due to warpage - yes I checked everything with a straight edge but I think the combination of warpage on the head and block is creating the issue. I think I need to do another tear down and get the head and deck machined. Multiple mechanics have stated they have never run across the issue.
Interesting 🧐 yeah I’m looking into getting the injectors turned if I get a new head, I wonder if it could be injection pump or they’re no popping correctly?
@@Austin_SaintOnge Pop pressure was checked - it was low and I could not get shims so I went with new injectors, I also resealed the pump. I am going to put air into the cylinder with the piston on TDC and see if air comes out the neighbour cylinder. I am also running compounds on a untouched stock pump. That dropped the EGTs and milage went up, boost never goes over 23 lbs. No smoke and quite clean running.
This is one of the few benefits of waking up every few hours from my sleep
It's safer to go camping with a buddy, and you can take turns stoking the fire.
Charcoal?😂
The only reason I want one is the fact that I have to process wood
I love mindless labor, especially when I have good equipment to make it super easy
Do you have mandatory technical inspections in your country? in our country it is called a technical inspection station where you have to go every two years to check the brakes and the technical condition of the vehicle and the chassis, you must have the size of the tires written in the technical license, etc. did not pass. How is it with you?
Yeah we’re pretty lucky to not have to deal with most of that! I’ve heard a lot of countries are pretty strict as far as inspections. I ran 40 inch tires with a 6 inch lift and tons of fuel on my last Cummins swapped 80 series. It depends on which state you’re in. Here in Idaho, we don’t really have any
@@Austin_SaintOnge oki thank you
Its uncanny how similar this engine is to a 1FZ. Good work!
It really is size wise! And when I look at the engineering on the Toyota diesels there’s a lot of similarities. Excited to hear this thing start up like the last one!
@@Austin_SaintOnge I'm jealous
Hi, will the engine you are assembling go into the petrol LC 80?
yes
Yes it will!
Thanks 😊
And why do you change what is the reason for it? Isn't it better to leave the original? The originals have the greatest value.
@@TLC-HDJ80 6BT Cummins engine has around 200 HP and a torque rating of about 420 lb-ft The 1FZ-FE engine produces around 120 HP and around 200 lb-ft of torque on a good day. Many feel ideal power for these trucks is around 350 HP. I believe the diesel is also substantially more fuel efficient. (plus, it looks and sounds bad-ass!)
Did you really think this through?
Fill it with riverstones?
I have the large winter well stove, I stoke it before I go to sleep, I leave a small fan running inside the tent, and as soon as I start the feel the temperature drop, I open up my stove, throw some more wood into it, close the door and go back to sleep. I might do this as many as three times a night.
And?
Is this with all 5.9 years?
I believe it was most common on 2nd gen years 94-97, not sure if the 24 valves had the same issue
I wouldn't say they're unrealistic because who ever is using needs to know it's not going to be like your at home. The tent isn't insulated, it's the same thing has having a campfire it's only going keep you warm when sitting in front of it. Easier in the tent cu, it keeps you out of rain, snow or wind.
- 20 in a tent sucks anyway
Pretty much anyway you slice it yeah😂
Have a look at the 4.5 ISDE cummins!
Those seem a bit heavy duty for a Land Cruiser, no?
Never go to sleep with a fire burning in your tent stove. Let it go out, set up a quick lighting fire to light before you get out of your bed in the morning and let the tent warm up then get up. If you have a fire burning and go to sleep anything could happen and you would not know it until it was to late.
This is true, great advice thanks!
You don't make good sense
Well silly ITS ALL ABOUT STAYING WARM NOT SLEEPING
I thought it was about glamping?
Get your Information correct before commenting.
You don't how to measure, that is old school
What’s the best way to measure?
Get a bigger stove. Problem solved
This is the consensus we’ve came to along with coal
@@Austin_SaintOnge coal stove would be much better.
Duh
Those pistons look like the Mahle or Interstate McBee marine pistons? Top ring is sitting lower than factory and bowls look a bit bigger. I’m running these exact same pistons in my engine I’m rebuilding now for my daily. Quick question though: what were your ring gaps you set on each ring, and also your piston to wall clearance? Hopefully you ran them a bit looser than stock especially on cyl 6. Also what are your power goals for this engine? Hp/rpm limit?
Yup! They’re insterstate mcbee 155 degree pistons. Haven’t taken measurement of the piston wall clearance yet, block was just bored .020 over and honed. Hp is not really a goal here, just looking for reliability and will give it a little more fuel than stock. Just going to install a governor spring.
@@Austin_SaintOnge awesome looked like it. I would suggest you set your timing to at least 18* with these pistons. I know it isn’t a high hp build or anything, but these bowls are so much deeper and the compression is a bit lower than the factory 145* bowls. The injection event is basically going to be too short with 145* injectors on a 155* bowl. Technically you can easily run 25+++ degrees without worry, but for a mild build, I’d highly recommend setting it to the 18*. It’ll still keep your EGT temps down close to stock, but massively increase your fuel mileage and a noticeable amount of power added.
@@redbaronrefining5322 I’m actually running 155 degree injectors too from a non intercooled block
@@Austin_SaintOnge ahhh ok. Set your timing to 16* then and it’ll be happy, more responsive, better economy and easy to start (compared to stock). Thanks for clarifying. I know you’re wanting to stay close to stock, but a small timing bump, and a little bit of AFC tuning will be absolutely worth it overall as the pumps are so horribly detuned from the factory for EPA bs
@@redbaronrefining5322 this is true they’re so limited from the factory. Will do!
Piston heights, okay? this is a big one to watch out for as they will smack the cylinder head
Actually doing the piston protrusion test right now! Looking good, came back at 0.024 thousandth which is within spec!
These stoves are nice for daytime use. When you're in your yard. Or carcamping. I used several models....it's not for 24/7 camping. Too bulky. Too much work. A 450ml gas cannister and a heater that screws on top of that, works great.
Agreed
You failed buying from Amazon
Facts
Great to see you building another. Hopefully I’ll start my build this winter once I pull my boat out of the water for the season. It’s my only tow vehicle. What are your plans (if any) for accessory relocation?
For sure I get how it’s difficult when it’s your daily! I actually daily a Corolla hybrid 😂 I’m actually going to keep the dodge accessory bracket! One of my buddies completed a swap without having to relocate the ac or alternator. I’ll keep you updated!
2nd ring is a Scraper ring ...fire ring is in the head gasket g money
Whoops wrong terminology on my part you’re exactly right! No fire rings going in this budget build 😂
Aren't there more specialist tents for these extreme temps? This seems more like enduring not enjoying camping but keep it going.
There are better tents for sure. And yeah at the end of the day it’s about surviving
Hate from Michigan
Thanks bud
Your fire is too small and putting a hole in the roof is always a no-no. Heat rises. You want large logs burning slowly
Whatever
I use wood stove during the day and into the evening , then use diesel heater overnight . Camping in -20 with one heat source is your problem.
Stoves dont cost $600...
It cost $300 and the tent as well
What fire stokes and feeds it's self all night inside of a tent?
$600?? Lol you got ripped on Amazon, you do not buy junk like that and say hey it only holds wood chips. True tent stoves use chopped logs.
ua-cam.com/video/CaAOhWnGQ1U/v-deo.htmlsi=cfPopdI5OLJc0OCC
I go outside bare feet and no shirt in -20c around the yard and when I smoke my joints.
Definitely go the rock bug kit
I’m leaning that way!
Diesel heater. Problem solved. No condensation buildup from propane. No tending a wood fire all night.
Yup that’s the go for sure this next season
Not part of this video just a heads up with the side cover for the block if you can get a new cover get one they can be an absolute pain to get them to seal from them bending and they are only held in with 6 bolts if i remember right
Oh yeah that’s right, I was looking at getting a billet one but this stock one is straight so I’ll be good
@@Austin_SaintOngeA cheap $80 billet side cover is worth it. They have dual -12 AN fittings you can run right to a catch can instead of dumping oil on the ground slowly with the stocker (vapor build and drip). You can also run the Case/New Holland dual valve cover breather for extra security when it comes to crankcase pressure. Run all lines to your 4 port catch can, and run the “breather” ports (where you’d normally have air filters) to a Venturi weld in bung on your downpipe. They can also be called scavenge exhaust adapters. This will create a small amount of vacuum so you keep crankcase pressure down as much as possible, thus preventing oil leaks for years and years.
@@redbaronrefining5322 that’s pretty trick I’m looking at an eBay one right now!
What is the purchase of the dowl pin??
$30 from power driven diesel. Cost way more than it should for that little piece of steel, you can make your own for practically free, but a nice solution if you don’t want to take the time to
I think he meant purpose. @@Austin_SaintOnge
@@user-op7vk5dt7g oh good call, it’s to align the timing case with the front of the engine
I sleep better when its cold.

Bro how you get that rust outta the coolant or oil galleries?
Evaporust! Mixed with distilled water. Let it heat cycle a couple times then flush
