living abroad in mexico city: making friends + lagunilla market tour
one of the best parts of moving abroad is creating a chosen family. finding a tribe that feels like home. this was an unforgettable weekend in mexico city. i went to a Black expat cookout and ate southern food and then spent the next day at lagunilla market. from trying mouth watering sandwiches to finding antiques to dancing -- this day was filled to the brim with laughter.
idk who needs to hear this but take a leap of faith. create a life in alignment with your dreams. whether you're thinking of moving abroad, seeking quality community, or looking for inspiration to step out of your comfort zone, i hope this inspires you to embrace the magic waiting for you on the other side of fear.
time stamps:
00:00-12:45 - Black expat cookout event
12:46-22:24 - lagunilla market tour
22:25-30:24 - trying new sandwiches

It’s the energy for me. 🎉🎉🎉
I bought this book because of you! Thanks for sharing.
Your energy tho 🙌🏾
😂😂😂magnesium definitely be having these 90’s knees lubricated
Hi Arielle and Happy New Year!!! First, I love your content, your vibe, your energy is everything ✨️ You remind me of my best friend 🧡 Second, I'm also from Brooklyn and planning my move to Mexico City for next year. I've been following your journey and I'm very thankful for your sharing as it has helped me so much in my search. I have a question, if you wouldn't mind me asking. Would you live in Coyoacan? I'm from BK, live in Flatbush now. I do want a vibe, think the Stuy meets Williamsburg!! Would you recommend Coyoacan? I know you live in Santa Maria and it's very traditional. I love the local vibe of Santa Maria, it's authentic and warm. But, I do want to have my little coffee shops and cutsey things close; Also I love Frida Khalo, she's my spirit animal ♥️ What do you think? And, thank you darling! P.s. Congratulations on your 1 year anniversary in Mexico City, it looks great on you!!!!
hey hey! thank you so much!! tell your bestfriend i said yerrrr! i love coyoacan!! it's so so gorgeous but the area i live in now is exactly like coyoacan! same energy and same vibe. coyoacan is about 30-45 mins driving frim the main city area of mexico city and it's about an hour out on the train. it's a very beautiful and rich area to live in! but it was way too far from any of the action for me. if i had to compare it, coyoacan would be like staten island. far but close. kinda. and you know how certain parts of SI can feel like certain parts of brooklyn like canarsie or like east new york -- it's like that! it's type far out and out of the way. if you don't want to be close to the parties, events, galleries, museums, the majority of the restaurants people meet up at -- then coyoacan is perfect for you! a lot of my friends that are in relationships and relaxing, they live in coyoacan. but if you want more action, cdmx is where it's at. also there are more buses and trains in cdmx then coyoacan and it is slightly a bit more walkable. so it really does depend on what you're going for. if i was older and in a relationship i would live there! but right now i love being close to my friends, my pilates studio, my dentist, different restaurants, etc. i say when you come to cdmx take a day trip out there! the frida exhibit is amazing! you have to pay to take pictures and it's a big tourist attraction (i personally don't do as much tourist things as i would like. i'm pretty day to day and chill vibes) but i do think it will be worth spending a day but when i took the drive out there my friends and i quickly realized it felt like santa maria la ribera. the blog right before this was me spending a day in coyoacan! you should check it out! also SMLR (santa maria) there are a lotttt of super cute cafe spots, biblioteca vanconcelos, tons of cute restaurants and rooftop vibes here. it's local and there's so much going on. it's truly the best of both worlds and i can see in a few years from now it's only going to get better. let me know if you have any more questions, i'd love to answer them for you. these are really great questions by the way!
@ArielleSimone Thank You so much!! I appreciate your response. I'm so happy you've found your community and Arielle, you are glowing, I can see your joy. See, I needed that visual you gave ne, Staten Island/Canarie = Coyoacan and l agree with you, it's probably too far; l will take a day trip there though and I'm gonna watch your blog. Your neighborhood sounds great! I'm going to go there and walk through it. My client, he used to live there, recommended Anahuac, San Miguel Chapultepec, and Juarez. I love what I've seen of Condesa, but I know it will be crazy expensive. Thank you so much again, l appreciate your input. :)) Raquele
@@rwilliams7306 i love san miguel! san rafael is a vibe too! i like juarez as well! let me know which one you end up deciding! love coyoacan but she is a far girl and a bit out the way, if that's what youre looking for it's perfect! and the rent is muchhh lower than in cdmx area!
@ArielleSimone I will definitely let you know. This process is so exciting!! Thank you so much for your help 🙏🏾 💛
Girl you are just the cutest ever ❤
thank you friend!!
I love your content Ariel ❤❤❤ Your energy is love! I'm from Brooklyn too and making the move next year! I'm making a scouting trip in May for 2 weeks and I'll be staying in Condessa and Roma. I'm going to also return in October and stay with a host family for two weeks to practice my spanish.

Wow, the lack of mexican people at those parties do show the gentrification problem. Time to check your privilege :)

Catching up on the vlogs but I’m glad you found your community 🖤 it’s so important for us to find a community that gets US 🫶🏾 I can imagine even more as an expat
@@jasmin6023 thank youuuu!!! community really elevated my entire experience in mexico in the best ways! i’m so grateful 🙏🏾
Hi. I saw your post on Twitter and I am so sorry that wack people were telling you wack shit. I am also from New York, and I am so proud of you and I smiled when you said you got that hat from JimmyJAZZ cause I know exactly where you brought it from. If you are happy, then stay where you are happy and keep doing you. This is just to encourage you and tell you that your happiness makes me smile and it is so amazing that you get to live outside of New York City. New Yorkers can live in hell and make it a VIBE. Forget the haters and keep pushing. That's the Brooklyn way, baby. Believe me.

How’d you find your realtor?
Y pa’ cuando you leave Mexico?? Porque eso es lo que realmente nos interesa. Y antes de que digas que es racismo, soy más prieta que tú wey así que cállate y llegale.
¿You know what practice you should do daily? Not being a colonizer

@@asham.5490 i’m saying tho!! had to square up real quick 😭🤛🏾
This is such an interesting topic. I've talked long and hard with my therapist about it. I am a workaholic and I've realized that much of my behavior is rooted in the fear of being seen as not smart enough, not good enough and worrying about losing my job and not having enough money to take care of myself. Sadly, this lifestyle has backfired and I am now dealing with some pretty serious health issues as a result of being overworked and stressed out. So, I am learning that I am enough and that God WILL take care of me, no matter what happens.
heavy on being enough and God will take care of you. if you think about it, we've always been taken care of. thank you so much for sharing this. i hope that your health journey is restored and you're back to feeling better. cheers to setting up better boundaries and also validating yourself and your self worth! 'i am enough' has been my reoccurring mantra lately.
@ArielleSimone Yep, we are worthy "just because"...no need to prove, strive or force it. We are enough, just as we are!
Purrrr!!!! I LOVE this!

yw!! thank you for watching! which part of brooklyn? if you want an area kind of similar 'san rafael', santa maria la ribera, and roma sur def give big brooklyn vibes! idk if you speak spanish now but def start practicing! i def wish someone told me that before i moved lolll
@ Hi Arielle, Eastern Pkwy between Franklyn and Classon. It use to be Crown Heights but they now want to call it Park Slope, lol. My family is also from Bed Stuy. You already know Brooklyn is the New Manhattan with the gentrification. I do want the New York vibe and was thinking about Polanco but decided I don’t want the constant hustle and bustle. La Contesa and Roma seem nice but too touristy. I’ll be there in February for 10 days to start my mini stays to decide. Your videos are helpful and insightful. I saw that you responded to someone regarding an event you’re hosting around art week. I may try to make it for that.
