    Just noticed the haircut, a more mature professor! Aside from Celebrini and maybe Eklund scoring there is no reason to watch this team anymore this season for me. I understand the tank and would love Schaefer but this team is just not showing any growth aside from a few players. I'm just hoping that after 4 nations the young guys will get some needed rest and the team comes out and show signs of being a real NHL team but still in the hunt for the top draft pick.

    Zetterlund continually keeps missing the net on Grade A feeds from linemates(even more so with Smith added to line)… so much that he was demoted from the PP1 and walman was added mid game. He’s been squandering offensive momentum.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey 9 годин тому

      He did got dropped from PP1, but I do think it was mostly to get Granlund out of the PP QB spot in favour of Walman and Zetts was just a casualty of that. He certainly does miss the net more than I’d like though as you say, he is only behind Celebrini for missed shots this year.

    Absolutley pathetic performance by the Sharks. At the 50 game mark, the Sharks are a woeful 14 W - 30 L - 6 OTL = 34 points. Last year at the 50 game mark they were 14 W - 32 L - 4 OTL = 32 points. A whopping 2 point and zero win increase over last year -- after adding Toffoli, Wennberg, Celebrini, Smith, Walman, and Ceci and more. If I were Mike Grier I would be livid. There's no way that Warsofsky should continue coaching this team. He's a bright young guy for sure, but the Sharks desperately need someone with a deep NHL pedigree to lead this team. I'm fine keeping Warshofsky on as an assistant, but the team needs to change now. If we can't land someone now (e.g. Bruce Boudreu, Joe Quenville), maybe Grier should take over head coaching duties for the remainder of the season (like Lamoriello did a while back). Oher ideas might be to bring in Ricci, or Marleau, or Thornton onto the coaching staff and get them more invoved with the on-ice product.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey 9 годин тому

      That is a good point on comparing the records, it’s definitely a little disappointing that the Sharks haven’t gotten at least slightly better results than that. However, comparing goal differential from this season to last does show a bit more promise. They were at -91 last year, now at -52. There is also the stat saying they have the most one goal games of any other team this year.

    Hey Professor, I just had a flash dream...you with a quality mullet. What do you think Professor? How about if the Sharks win 22 games this year you grow a mullet? hehe I think you could rock it man. I thought maybe Coach Wars put Wenbert with Malin and Eklund in part in an effort to get him on the wing and away from the extra repsonisibiilties of a centerman in an effort to get Wenberg's game jump started? Taking Wenberg out of the center position takes away the heavy defensive responsibilities and lets him focus on just making plays as a winger. Plus with Celebrini and Iky he has two finishers he can pass to. Pete Clovis, CA

    It really seems like the 3rd period is what the Sharks have to focus on. They start strong but can't finish. I wonder if Georgiev has a mental thing holding him back. I feel like he's on until they score on him, then it's like he falls apart mentally and he doubts himself. Maybe I'm reading way too much into it but I have that sense watching him after the other team scores. The Sharks defense also has to get way better like you've said. When I watch other teams play their defense seems like it's on another level, the guys are even skating in tandem better. The Sharks just aren't together somehow. Thanks for class!

    • @professorhockey

      Realistically, the Sharks will have to wait until the end of the season to address their defensive woes. 50 games in, things aren’t going to systematically change, and the Sharks won’t make any drastic moves to shake things up either outside of subtracting certain players. Hopefully next year will be better (fingers crossed for Schaefer)

      @ I think that’s what makes this game so frustrating is that there are actually a ton of positives you can take from this game. (Well the first half at least) it’s just infuriating to watch this team come out so strong and then just collapse when teams apply pressure or push back. This team really needs to work on keeping their foot on the gas for a whole 60 because I definitely think score effects came into play here. I also am once again not a huge fan of the coaching decisions here. When that third or even fourth goal goes in you call a timeout and you settle things down. You get your team to snap out of it and finish the game. Also probably would have pulled Georgiev after the fourth goal. Think of the energy having Askarov come in in relief could have given the team. He just doesnt seem to be able to motivate or steer this team through tough situations. I’m definitely very upset with a loss like this and really hoping the sharks can take it to the preds back in San Jose

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey 10 годин тому

      Definitely one of the more frustrating games of the season. I can understand not putting in Askarov at least considering he played yesterday and may still be a little under the weather. These last 32 games will be very telling for whether Warsofsky has some shelf life here in San Jose.

    re askarov but also in general, man I know everyone plays through things to an extent, but I really wish teams didn't put actively ill players on the ice. 1) that's gross don't get your germs around, but also 2) it's not like you can 'muscle through' a fever, like you might be able to compensate for a sore knee or something, and it isn't a particular learning opportunity to spend a public hour trying not to throw up. or whatever his illness is, idk. hope he feels better soon

    smith granlund looks like a good combo to keep together, they both like the deception and getting defenders moving the wrong direction over speed approach off the rush, and the be patient on the perimeter and hope to generate one great chance instead of getting repeated half chances and tenaciously recovering the puck for multiple chances in a row when they have some sustained zone time. plus Granlund is nice a responsible defensively without sacrificing any skill. That line was together in game 1 of the season (albeit with Smith as the center) and did absolutely nothing because of Smith so its nice to see the progress

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey День тому

      He’s come a long way since then for sure, zetterlund also helps it as a bit of a wrecking ball style of player. Just need Granlund to up his game a little and Smith to be more consistent and it can be a strong top 6 line with the “that 70s line” too. Maybe that’s wishful thinking though

    Hey Professor, I did not realize how big the Bruins defensive corps were did you? Randy broke down their normal starters and they feature 4 guys 6' 5" or larger! (3 of them are 6'6"!!!). The Bruins are averaging 6'3" and 215lbs across the back line. That is by far the biggest defensive corps we have seen this year. I bring this up because it makes a lot of sense why Maclin and Eklund struggled down low particularly Eklund. Eklund is very strong for such a normal sized guy of his age and is difficult beyond belief to try to get the puck from behind the net. Today, he was able to manage it at least once that I remember but, I suspect that after this game he is going to rethink his off-season training regimen! If he were able to add 10 lbs of muscle to his frame I think he would be almost impossible to handle down low. Those guys were so big that even a young bull like Maclin was really struggling to fight for position down low. I would say this game was a very teachable moment for all the young guys. They have run up against big d-men before but, not a whole corps like that. It changes your thinking if you are a young forward for the Sharks about what it's going to take to be able to effectively battle with NHL D men I suspect. I really liked seeing Smith with Granlund's line. I totally agree that Will was a bit motivated to have a good game today as he had over 100 family and friends in attendance today. Also, Granlund is still a very wise teacher and mentor and I think he can help Will as he helped Zets and Eky. I think Zetterlund is the one guy we have among our young forwards who perfectly fits what I am talking about in terms of size, strength and fitness. Zetterlund has spent the last two summers in San Jose training hard and you can really see the difference. He is older too (25 I think?) but, he is a power forward type player though he lacks height and weight he still is extremely strong now and he looks and plays like it. When he comes up the ice it is hard to move him because he is so friken' strong on his skates. This is what I think our other young forwards are learning from this first season and this game with Boston today in particular because of the size of their whole D corps. I bet you are right about Askarov and from the description of Randy and Drew it sounds like this bug went through the whole locker room so how many are really sick I don't know but, I know several couldn't go for a few games they were so sick. I suspect that Askerov and probably a few others are playing slightly ill just gutting it out because its the NHL. Tough days Professor. Batten down the hatches and dog the portals down looks like stormy weather man! Pete Clovis, CA

      Yeah that’ll do it. I think fatigue likely played a part in that third period because of his illness. Tough to just work normally while ill, imagining doing so in such a high stakes and quick environment is crazy.

    As a Boston native, I went to this game today and wow could you feel the love for Will Smith. Boston fans are brutal when it comes to opposing players being announced, but there was far more cheers than boos for Smiths announcement, so sick. Even when Will scored, I heard numerous ppl around me say they’re happy it was him

    Tough loss but a far more entertaining game than the last few. Really hope we can see more of this version of Will Smith because he was absolutely lights out today. I feel like he’s been building up to this over the last few games and it was nice to see him. Finally get rewarded with a few points today. Hopefully the sharks can get healthy over the next few days and get guys like Toffoli and Kovalenko back into the lineup for the Nashville games because those are definitely both winnable

    • @professorhockey

      They activated Kovalenko off IR before this game even though he didn’t play, so he should be close. Toffoli I don’t think is a particularly serious injury either so hopefully the reinforcements are coming. Need some more 72-71-73 in my life

    Listen I love Mack but I really think is was a bad game for him, agree Ty was a negative to the line but Macklin had far more give aways than I have seen by him in most games. But He learns and adjusts better than most guys in their 20s tho. I like him for his first hatty visiting his old stomping grounds in bean town. Ship it

      I agree that it wasn’t great, but again I don’t blame him too much for it. I will say though, the NHL booked him for 3 giveaways this game, same as against Columbus and Detroit. Not a great number in any case, but not so out of the ordinary for him.

    Hey Professor, Pretty rough showing tonight. I think my overall impressions of this version of the Sharks is that we are probably expecting too much from this group of young talent and veteran players. The margin for error with this team is razor slim. Any loss of key forwards who have some skill like our two young Russian forwards and the lines immediately become hard to sort out. As for Granlund I can only see two possibilities. 1) Last season and the beginning of this season were an aberration and Granlund is just incapable of putting a full season in at this point of in his career or 2) He is hampered by some type of ailment that is affecting his ability to play in the manner we have grown accustomed to. Aboration or injury. Granlund does have a history of not being able to stay healthy prior to being a Shark so maybe he is dealing with something and just trying to take one for the team and play through it in an effort to make the case for his impending free agency? Trade, extend..? Who knows but, he has a lot riding on this season and it has stalled out the last 15 games largely for whatever reason. Pete Clovis, CA

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey 3 дні тому

      It seems unlikely that he’d be really good for a season and a quarter, then suddenly fall off without some sort of underlying issue. But if it is just general decline, it certainly makes one think twice about an extension, especially if he wants a Toffoli level deal.

    • @prosperfireson
      @prosperfireson 2 дні тому

      @@professorhockey I think Granlund is probably ideally suited to a 3rd line centerman at this point in his career if he was ever suited to a top 6 center? I like him a lot. He is my kind of player. Total team guy. Mentors younger players. Plays in ALL situations. We just don't have a second top 6 forward to replace him there yet. I think if he were slotted into the 3rd line center he would be tremendous playing against lesser competition. Its a lot to ask of him to play against top 6 forwards every night particularly when his line is constantly shifting.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey 2 дні тому

      I also think he is best as a really good third line center, if the Sharks trade him at the deadline, that’s the role the team trading for him would likely envision. At the same time however, if he does want a Toffoli deal, which has been rumoured, he would need to be a solid 2c since paying 6 million for a third liner is a pretty big stretch.

    • @prosperfireson

      @@professorhockey Interesting. I think some athletes at any level see themselves as better player than they might be. I think the opposite is rare. I also get the feeling that Grier is sort of hoping that he will find one of these veteran NHLers and give them an opportunity (perhaps like your guy Goodrow?). So far I am not sure he has really found that guy. Grandlund is pretty good success story for Grier and Walman might be that guy too time will tell?

  • @sebastianwittenkamp2738

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey 3 дні тому

      I think he’s alright in a fourth line role if he remains there, but he’s also kind of low hanging fruit right now because that first half of the season where he played up and down the lineup.

  • @Nucksy
    @Nucksy 3 дні тому

    Warsofsky playing Dellandria on the top line along with all the line shifting all season makes me believe he is not the guy to lead this team. Maybe losing is the plan this season. Hagens and Martone or another premier D prospect would go well with the prospect pool we already have. Trade everyone off at the trade deadline and build for the future. The record isn’t great but it looks better than last year and Askarov is a franchise goalie. Add another great player even better. Granlund is struggling because of Warsofsky’s line juggling and chemistry with his linemates.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey 3 дні тому

      I think the Sharks were likely hopeful to be better than they currently are, but I believe Grier was aware they’d likely have a basement finish again. You are right about the direction of the team going into the deadline at this point, every single UFA is in play I imagine.
