    How about Celebrini taking a stick to the face/nose, setting up the power play. Then coming back out to handle business like a boss. All at 18 yrs old. I loved the way the Sharks played tonight. Question Professor: will you discuss Sharks prospects like Sam Dickinson or Nate Misskey in the future? I’d love to hear your perspectives this point in the year. Great class tonight!

      @@professorhockey to give my actual thoughts on the game, Ive been very impressed with the start of these games lately. I know Washington flipped momentum with the pp, but it feels like just yesterday where the sharks were just dead in the water (pun sorta intended) at the start of each game and constantly having to fight their way back into games. Huge improvement there.
      Also shout out to Smith, Kunin, and Kostin. Players who all looked like liabilities in the first 10ish games (yes we all knew Smith had more in him but still). These three players upping their game has given the Sharks a huge boost to their depth and makes the top 3 lines all legitimate scoring threats. This team is reaching a point where they can actually role 3 legit scoring lines and 1 shutdown line competitively and I am here for it.
      When this season started I just wanted another top 3 pick because I figured the sharks would get better next year and this would be their last good chance at a high round pick. Now I’m fully invested. I hardly even care if they miss they playoffs by a few points, these last 15 games have been so much fun to watch and the development is so good with the 24- old players that I cant help but bare witness.
      If you actually took the time to read this then you have my admiration. Maybe, just maybe, the present is teal.

      @@infinity-vm4ul I read it and I agree! But barely missing the playoffs and not getting a high pick would be a bummer, but the direction of the team would be trending higher so I really couldn't complain.

    Hey Professor,
    Another stunning marker by the 2024-25 Sharks. I did not think it was reasonable to expect that given the roster Mike Grier had assembled it would be reasonable to expect this team to come together so well this season let alone this early! Much credit is deserved all around from the front office for assembling this roster and helping develop the young players, to the new coaching staff for making the right moves and steering this group of players in a manner that allowed them to find success and come together as a team much faster than anyone expected and to the payers themselves for coming together despite all the challenges before them and doing it at warp speed! Depending on how the rest of the season goes I think even if the Sharks fail to earn a play off spot much credit is deserved to this group and they will have certainly cemented their place in the San Jose Sharks short history for such a remarkable turn around.
    It is still critical to note that the success we are realizing right now is on a razor's edge and that we are just a few key injuries away from the team comping apart at the seams. Personally Professor I am of the mindset that we human's can always do better in everything we do. We are never perfect in anything we do regardless of how amazing the endeavor is.
    I say this because it's fair to point out that the Sharks individually and as a team or by unit can be better at various aspects of the game. That said, its important to remember that no NHL player is going to win every time they attempt something on the ice in all 3 zones. Every team in the league has amazing talent and the NHL is the best hockey league featuring the best talent in the world. While I would love our guys to play a perfect game without blemish that is not realistic I think. Sometimes the other teams guys win and execute in whatever they are attempting in all 3 zones. I think this is particularly accurate when we face the better teams which tend to have more talent and better cohesion between the players and the systems their coaching staff employ. If we see a particular player or unit consistently make the same mistake then we have a problem.
    As far as Luke Cunin's improved play of late I think there are probably multiple reasons why he is thriving right now. I would say that among those reasons we ought to remember that he is a little over one year removed from suffering the worst knee injurty for any athlete...an ACL tear. Most athletes particularly those who play in the NFL, NBA or NHL it takes time to regain confidence that the knee is going to hold up. It is not uncommon for professional athletes to need one full season before they regain their confidence that the knee is going to hold up. I think Kunin is right in that wheel house and the confluence of a new coaching staff, lack of high end talent, playing with better players and opportunity all factored into Kunin having this moment and I am very happy for him.
    I hate seeing anyone fail in anything particularly in sports. I am old enough that Kunin could be my son and I find myself often imaging how proud the players parents must be in their son's realizing success in the show. I am moved to tears by this idea frequently when the guys have a good game or score or make a remarkable play Professor. I believe the technical term for this behavior is "weepy old man bull shit." hehehe
    Regardless last night was another remarkable game and a marker set down by this version of the Sharks that no, we will not go quietly into the night but, instead are prepared to put up a fight and play an honest game. GO SHARKS!

      Yes definitely, the Sharks have been winning games as of late, but there are still mistakes being made and things to work on. The 1 goal they gave up to Washington in this game was just disastrous, and it’s not the first time the Sharks have been out of position like that this season.

    • @prosperfireson
      @prosperfireson 7 днів тому

      @@professorhockey absolutely. I guess what I was pointing out is sometimes you just get beat as opposed to "bearing yourself" because a player failed to be in the right place at the right time. For example a 50/50 puck battle against the boards? Some of those you are going to lose because the other team has good players too and sometimes they execute.

  • @ponyboy9765
    @ponyboy9765 7 днів тому

    I think this road trip as a whole is going to be a good measuring stick for how much the team has improved. So far so good. They held the most offensive team in the NHL to one goal which is insane and the team as a whole just looks so much more in sync. A lot less hot potato plays and bad puck moving and the offense just keeps rolling. This team is far exceeding expectations so far and I’m loving it.

    I’d say, if they keep on winning, the last thing the Sharks should do is buy at the deadline, even if they’re in a playoff spot.
    Let the boys play, and don’t break up the locker room. MAYBE … sign a Granlund extension, as a reward and signal to future players and FA’s

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  8 днів тому +7

      Yeah there’s absolutely no reason to buy at the deadline, and unless they are actually in a playoff spot, they should still probably be sellers.

    • @donganem8135
      @donganem8135 8 днів тому

      @@professorhockey But who should they be selling? most of the speculation I've seen has been around Granlund and Blackwood. But if these players want to stay with the team I think it would be a huge mistake to part with them. Askerov is the goalie of the future, but most teams are going with a 1a/1b, and Askerov/Blackwood would be a spectacular pair. Granlund is the beating heart of this team, and losing him would be a huge setback...other teams in recent rebuilds have taken 8-10 years to get back to the playoffs...if we want to avoid that fate, we'd do better to add via free agency than sell 2 of our best players for D picks who may take years to pan out - if ever. Especially since we have so much talent already in the bullpen- Guschin, Cardwell, Musty, Dickinson, Cagnoni and Mukamedullin.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  8 днів тому +3

      Yeah Granlund and Blackwood are the main targets. I think it will come down to what they want to do, and where they want to be. As much as they may love it here, I also wouldn’t blame them for wanting to go to a contender to try and win the cup. If that’s the case, they may not want to re-sign here anyway, at which point, it would be silly not to trade them. On top of that, if a really good deal comes along, like a first round pick, it would certainly be hard to say no to such a trade. And if they really do love it here, they could always re-sign with the Sharks this offseason, it wouldn’t be the first time that’s happened.

    • @kevinadams6384
      @kevinadams6384 8 днів тому

      2026-27 is still clearly the long term plan for "the year they bust out" and that really can't change a ton because of the contracts that expire.
      By then, hopefully the current youth like Dickinson and whoever else comes along are ready to take on major roles and the team will have the cap space to sign major pieces who come here wanting to be a part of this and play with Celebrini and the boys.
      As Prof Hockey has shown us, we are still, at best, one offensive line short and one top D pairing away from really competing, and there will be the temptation to give it our all this year with the prayer of getting wiped out in the first round of the playoffs, but that is something Grier needs to avoid.
      Granlund, Blackwood and anything else not nailed down that can be sold for real assets should be traded. The way they are playing and the way things are shaking out, I think very good offers will come in for these guys and hopefully that will make it easier for the players who are clearly bought in and giving it their all as well as the fans.
      The worst thing that can happen this year is to barely miss the playoffs and pick a guy who doesn't move us closer to a cup. Top 5 and preferably top 3 in the draft should be the goal. It sucks because this team is so fun, but if we want Cups, this is the only way.

    • @scratchman274
      @scratchman274 7 днів тому

      @ i agree with all your points. If they start to drop off, there should be no question of trading away our big value assets. Dumping at the deadline will also make us better positioned for a higher pick. Blackwood and Granlund would get massive returns if they keep up their performance. I doubt Grier would accept weak trade offers.
      That said, even if a miracle happens and the sharks are hunting a wild card spot, they should either stand pat, or trade player for player, but definitely don’t bring in rentals who will ask for massive raises during FA talks. Even if they decide to extend granlund (I don’t think they should..) anything over 3 years wouldnt be wise IMO. No one on this team deserves a long-term contract before the likes Eklund, Celebrini, Smith trio get their offers

    • @kevinadams6384
      @kevinadams6384 7 днів тому

      Couple things... I think trading at least one goalie is a must, and the main reason obviously is it allows Askarov to get back up to the Sharks. Both Blackwood and Vanacek are UFAs and I think you trade both if there are good offers for both. At least 5 playoff teams have crappy goalie situations so I'm pretty optimistic the offers we all would want are coming. Because of Askarov, it's a no brainer to take them and it doesn't even necessarily compromise 2024 results.
      And if there are any other Cuda deserving of NHL time, they should trade whoever is blocking the kid, or if it's a D-man, then Rutta or Thrun will just sit.
      I'm kinda hoping that the way Grier sidesteps any bad juju from trading guys off this team is if the boys see the young players coming up and they keep the mindset of continuing to build.
      Even after this nice run, they are still 4th worst in the league in points/gm, and I think Nashville can be expected to pull it together and pass them too. Let's not go crazy and see a playoff team out there. They are super fun, but we are mostly still measuring them against one of the worst teams of all time, not against real playoff teams. I've been watching Faceoff and I kind of forgot what playoff hockey looks like and this still ain't it

      @@kevinadams6384 Who is the other goalie with Askarov if both VV and Blackwood are traded? As good as Askarov is, and I believe he is, he can't do it by himself, and SJ has no depth worth bringing up from the Cuda. SO:
      Which goalie do they trade, VV for what they can get for him, or Blackwood for a better return and win fewer games?

    • @kevinadams6384
      @kevinadams6384 6 днів тому

      @@kenjackson6256 I would invite Grier to just get creative and maximize his returns. There may be opportunities to take a bad goalie contract from somebody and get more picks as well. The Not Askarov goalie might play 30% of the time and be bad, too. But obviously I think Grier will only trade any of these guys, Blackwood, Vanacek, Granny, etc, if the return is worthwhile. He's earned my trust for sure. And losing games will mean a better pick and I really do think staying in the top 3 this year is highly worth it. There is no Celebrini this year, but I think the 3 guys in the mix for #1 are all guys who would have probably gone #2-4 overall last year and any of them would be massive pieces for when the Sharks win the Cup :)

    Ferraro has strung together like 5 of 6 good games w/ 1 stinker in between. He really does look like he’s settling in w/ Lilly nicely. This is coming from his biggest hater. Good on ya’ Mario.
    Eklund/Macklin are magic as a duo and while I like Zetterlund I like him more on a 3rd line and would rather see someone slightly more skilled on that line w/ retrieval skills.
    And while Kunin has looked better, I’m sorry. I will always hate doughboy Kunin. No matter what.
    Agree on Thrun. He’s shown flashes of some strong d-zone play in certain games but he’s much less of a puck mover than I initially thought he would be. He’s on “chit or get off the pot” time now. Shakir is starting to look better w/ the Cuda and if they keep winning they might have no choice but to give him a look. Would anyone be excited about a Shakir/Thompson pairing? Also Vlasic is almost ready.

      I’m honestly not sure who else could be on the top line unfortunately. The only player who I think could work better there would be Granlund, and they would have him play the wing and do a Zetterlund-Smith-Kostin line. It’s not awful, but I doubt Warsosfsky would go for it unless the Sharks start losing a bunch of games again.
