I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how short and readable they are. We have to split a play into about 2-3 chunks of reading, but can finish one within a week and it’s followable/we’re getting the gist of what’s going on. We’ve done less than scheduled, but that’s okay! I think you’ll love it.
We did our whole year last year doing oral narrations and now we are doing written narrations for all of them. My girls are both in fifth grade though. I have seen so much growth and it makes my mama heart so happy!

I asked Karen Glass during her online training if I should try it yet or wait, and she said as long as his oral narrations seem solid go for it. Can I ask, how long did you stick to one written narration per week before increasing it to 2 a week, etc? Did you notice their written narrations were a lot shorter than oral narrations? I know that’s normal but curious what you noticed.
Your videos have been so helpful! We are switching to CM method of homeschooling for the first time and will start with ambleside in January!!! I feel better about going ahead and just do the Bible reading like you are doing!! I felt a weight lift when you explained what you were doing. I immediately decided to do the same 😊
So glad! I really like doing Bible together. So many Ambleside moms have said they combine Bible so I think it’s pretty common! It seems like families who do the scheduled Bible readings also do separate family bible time too, and use the scheduled readings as school/narration subjects. We may have my older kids start their own Bible readings as scheduled on AO but not till they’re old enough to do it solo and till we’ve adjusted more to AO! Baby steps over here! Hope you have a great start in Jan 😀
We have been following CM for many years but I have been on and off with AO. We have been more relaxed CM, we picked our own books (mostly Picture books at the start), every year we've covered 6 Artists and 3 composers, Nature study, narrations (which seriously saved our homeschooling), and copywork (my kids get compliments on their handwriting). But, yeah, I definitely loop/rotating subjects depending on the year so don't worry about skipping stuff!!! I agree that AO is really stuffed and that is one of many reasons we have an awkward relationship with AO. Though, I am looking forward to doing trying Year 3.5 with my oldest and cottage Schooling (combining) with my Grade 1 & 3...next school year (Maybe)❤️👍 ***Yes, we combine Shakespeare for all the kids, I do Artists, Composers, Science (& Nature Study), Geography, and Poetry together. Yes, we definitely do Bible together as a family, too. We discuss Bible but we don't narrate either. And we take breaks and go through a family devotional****
Thanks for sharing what it looks like in your home using these methods without necessarily using just one curriculum! Very helpful and it sounds like a lovely way to do many subjects together. Cottage School sounds amazing btw!!
@@LizBlueandHazel the cottage school idea is on the AO website (AO for groups...in their description/overview the authors talk about it being used in families as well). It works better to combine my Form 1 students together especially since they are not reading in their own. My oldest is a stellar reader, narrator, and writer...I am thinking of ways to help challenge her a bit without overwhelming her because she is my overthinking one!!!
I’d love to hear your reviews on each of the books. We’re moving to AO from AGF next year with a Y4 and Y3. Is MHLW a keeper? It’s one I’m not sure about! Also, I hear Age of Fable gets much more manageable after the Intro. Would you recommend another book (like D’Aulaires Greek Myths) instead if my student has no Greek mythology background?
For our first term, being brand new, we didn’t use any audiobooks for assigned readings. It was a lot, and often too much reading on my voice box! It got much better when my oldest took over some of his own readings. I wanted the chance to see what this would look like (as is) with 3 levels using just books. Next term, we may try using some audiobooks! I’m not sure which ones, and I think I’d like my oldest to keep reading as much as he can instead of listening to audio. Mainly, I’m hoping it will relieve me of some of the readings I’d normally have to read out loud to the younger ones.
I have never heard of Lamb's version of Shakespeare! Thank you for mentioning it. We will use it as I did not want to use the original plays just yet.
