    Your conclusion about IoT devices and Band Steering is completely incorrect. The issue is that the Host device, your cellphone, tablet, etc. that you are using to connect the and communicate with IoT device, is connected to 5.0Ghrz Radio. The App will try to Push the current connection of the Host Device to the IoT device as its WiFi information. So when the Host Device is on a band the IoT device doesnt understand, this causes it to fail to connect. It has NOTHING to do with Band Steering, and EVERYTHING to do with a poorly implemented IoT handshake. This can even be a problem if your network runs at 40MHrz bandwidth on 2.4Ghrz, instead of the default 20MHrz. Unfortunately Ubiquiti doesnt have an "IoT Mode" like Plume, Eero, Linksys Velop, Netgear Orbi, etc. or any other Mesh System that uses Band Steering by default, to force the Host device onto 2.4GHrz for 10-15 minutes, so you can communicate with your IoT device, and connect thm to the network properly. Once that IoT device has read the WiFi data off of the Host Device, the Host device can control it from any network. THe easiest way to do this on Ubiquiti isnt to disable Band Steering, but simply to Turn Off the 5Ghrz Radio temporarily on that WiFi Network, which will force all of the devices to 2.4GHrz, and allow you to set up any new IoT device from the Host device, and then you can quickly turn 5Ghrz back on without issue. And the brilliant thing about that, is that even though many IoT devices will not connect without a 2.4GHrz initial connection, once that have connected to the network, many of them DO actually support 5Ghrz, and will Band Steer correctly once the 5Ghrzs Radio is re-enabled. Which can help save on wasted airtime in 2.4Ghrz. Likewise, other devices will usually NOT Band Steer on their own, they will simply choose whatever network is stronger at that time. Client Band Steering is extremely unreliable. And it is more likely your Smart Device will lose all WiFi connectivity, before it says "Oh, i will just switch to 2.4Ghrz", also most Client Steering, is also usually not a seamless handoff. Where Band Steering will make that hand off between the two radios with no disruption. Of Course the real irony here, is that you then promote an IoT network that 5Ghrz only...which...yeah, no words. Exactly the opposite of what you should be doing. Then you enable Fast Roaming...which...is literally a feature of Band Steering. Which you disabled...so...yeah...again, no words. Crazy when people claim to be network engineers, and dont even understand the basic specifications of the protocols they are talking about. Thank God for the internet...

    Thanks a lot for the video & pdf :) Interesting fact: I have a pi-hole for DNS in my Default network. After applying rule 1-4 and 6 i can not ping or use the pihole web interface or the gateways from the IOT network as expected, BUT the nslookup still works and the answer is comming from my pi-hole. I made a wireshark trace and the answer is indeed coming from my pi-hole. I assume this works without rule 5 (allow dns port 53) because i distribute the pi-hole IP as dns server by dhcp with the UDM as the only dns entry and the UDM manages this internally.

    Being that 40Mbps down / 2Mbps up DSL was the only internet option where I live, as soon as they turned on 5G on my closest Verizon tower, I tried the service (starting about 2 months ago). So far it has been OK, I do still have my DSL as failover on my UDM Pro and it does occasionally have to kick in. A reboot of the Verizon router fixes the issue. At first the speeds were all over the place, but as things have settled on this tower (they did just turn on the 5G) it has been better. I know I could benefit from an external antenna as outside I get 300-350Mbps, where my 5G router is now (best place I can do inside right now until I run another CAT6 line) I average 150-250Mbps. Much better than the 40Mbps I had. The upload went from 2Mbps to averaging 10--20Mbps, big improvement. I do have it in bridge mode to my UDM Pro, that part works well. Not ready to kill the DSL yet, as that provider is supposedly coming with Fiber soon. Overall, with (2) providers, I only pay $55 + $45 monthly, so for now with two providers @ $100/month I will leave it as is.

    Hi, thanks for this video. However, I just applied rules 1 to 4 and I still am able to ping devices on other VLANS. I allready rebooted the udmSE. The only difference I have is that my default iprange is within 10.0.0.0/24, other ranges are 10.0.50.0/24, 10.0.100.0/24 and 10.0.200.0/24. Only when I move the fourth rule to the top or the first rule to the bottom, then I can't ping the other devices.

      So I did try them but had an issue with NAT for port forwarding, etc. Only very few people at Verizon and Tmobile knew what I was trying to do and ultimately said it wasn't possible unless I was on business plan that didn't use GNAT. Anyway, fiber is what I have to use, but for remote work from home my wife could use this and free up my meager network.

    • @ethernetblueprint

      You are quite welcome. The only way to get port level information is to have a managed switch. If you elect to get a unifi switch, then you will be able to manage it like I do in the video... If you buy a 3rd party managed switch, it would have its own interface outside of Unifi, but you could see port level information. To me, having all Unifi gear makes it the easiest, however, their switches aren't cheap.

    I did this prior to ordering AT&T fiber. I had a 50-ft to an accessible box and then two 10-ft runs so I had a choice. The AT&T guy fought me on this and said it had to be on an outside wall. Took some effort, but one I used a pre-pulled cable to show him how easy it was, then showed him the closet had power, ventilation and was drywalled, he accepted.

    Cat6 is so versatile but if you are a real low voltage company you do not use electrical boxes you use low voltage boxes so the wire can not get kinked up

    • @ethernetblueprint
      @ethernetblueprint 3 дні тому

      I hear you and agree that LV boxes can be used... For me personally, I like the extra support of an electrical box for a ceiling mounted AP. The wiring doesn't have to be "kinked". It can still can be pushed through the box similar to a LV style. I typically use LV boxes behind the TVs and for vertical mounted wall jacks.

    Question? I am unable to find a way to enforce this. To bypass it you can just change the DNS settings and then the content filtering is no longer effective. As cellphones DNS settings cannot be restricted, is there a way for UniFi to drop or block connections that are using alternate DNS settings?

    • @ethernetblueprint
      @ethernetblueprint 3 дні тому

      All you would need to do is to create an FW rule (not a traffic rule) that blocks all other DNS on port 53 for whichever network you like. See my FW rules video from my mini series on how to do this.

    If the advertised number of clients a Unifi AP can handle is 300, should we push it to that limit or better limit per AP to 25% of its maximum capacity?

    • @ethernetblueprint
      @ethernetblueprint 6 днів тому

      I haven't actually tested this, but I would steer you towards not running at max. Those ratings are like gas mileage for cars... it is never as advertised. I don't think you need to do 25% but I wouldn't max it out if it were me... Some of that will depend on the clients too... If you have a WiFi 6 AP and all the clients are WiFi 6, then you may be able to push the limits, but if it is a mixed environment, your older devices will always clog up the throughput. Just my 2 cents

    This is a side move from the UDR. This model can run all the apps but has no POE ports and does have a clumsy power brick. I despise external bricks. They represent laziness on the part of the industrial designer that translates to a headache on my part. An upgraded UDR would have been better.

    Smurf tubes are a must! Also, when we built our house in 2020 (before crazy price hikes), I had them run Cat6 to every corner under the soffit. I ended up building a workshop about 150' away from the house and installed gigabeams to extend the network to it. One of the under-soffit Cat6 came in handy. When the sprinkler system was installed, I had them lay a 2" conduit between the house and workshop. Plan is to eventually run fiber in the conduit. Then, reuse the gigabeams to extend from the workshop to my tractor shed (250' away). Point is, think ahead because you never know.

      I run my Synology NAS with Plex on my IOT network where my TVs are networked... I still have access to it from the main network, but I have it IP'd on the IOT VLAN... Works great. Part of my reasoning for that though was because I had plex running in a docker and kind of had to do this way. If you use VMware for you Plex server, I think you have some more options...

      You got it. The votes are in and it sounds like most want to see that video as well... I have it on my list.

    Hi Tim, is it possible to configure custom DNS (e.g. cloudflare) on top of all the network and device rules for the kids network?

    • @ethernetblueprint
      @ethernetblueprint 8 днів тому

      Absolutely. In fact, it is probably a better way of doing this as CF does a better job at blocking bad sites... When you create the Kids VLAN, there is a setting at the bottom in the advanced area that allows you to put in your own custom DNS servers. (up to 4, I think)

    Great video, thank you! Personally I don't like the short style speak text on the screen. That's what CC is for if you want it.

      I didn't realize it was going to do both when I did that. I won't be doing that moving forward. Sorry about that. Still learning this UA-cam editing stuff...

    Hi Tim - thanks for another great video. Please add my vote for a Firewalla video as well. Real interested in understanding how you've set up the Firewalla in your Unifi setup. Thank you.

    Great video, I am wanting to make the switch to Unifi just for my security cameras, I love my home network to much to switch. With that being said is the NVR and cameras all I need for the setup? You mentioned UDM/SE + switch + cameras (why would you need a switch with the UDM/SE?).

    • @ethernetblueprint
      @ethernetblueprint 9 днів тому

      Yes, You would just need an NVR or a CloudKey+ to have a cameras and they would work with your current network.

    Thanks for this and all the other Ubiquity videos you've shared. I'm in the process of setting up my first own network and your insights and advice are great. A video on setting up Firewalla in general and for parental control in particular would be great.

    Great content but poor audio. You'd benefit from rerecording the audio to clear up your voice ans make the video more audible.

      Yes, true. That is an earlier video. I have redone this video a couple times now and the new versions, I think, are better. Check out my Let's make some VLANs" ua-cam.com/video/B_0dXLNCGp8/v-deo.html or check out my 8 part mini series where I also go over this. Thanks for bearing with some of my early stuff!

    It's funny that they dropped the mimo down to 2x2 on the new U7, while it's better on the U6 pro line.....Unifi doing unifi things though. 5.4ghz is where you want mimo the most as some of the advancements with communicating over 6ghz makes the antennas less of a barrier for servicing.

      I’m not sure how they come up with these decisions. Usually there is a method to the madness. Maybe with MLO it won’t matter as much?!?
