Thanks for this series! I'm going to pull the trigger soon and replace my Asus 3x mesh. My growing HA IoT stack needs a real VLAN and I don't feel like overspending on the high end mesh equipment just to get real VLANs. I use Unifi at work so this is really a no brainer for choice.
I am getting ready to start upgrading my home network, but will have to do it a little at a time. Can I start with the UDM and connect my current mesh system to this, or do I have to use all Ubiquiti equipment?
Absolutely - you can have a UDM as your router and just use your Mesh as WAPs, but you will have limited functionality. Basically, you would just be able manage and view all of your devices from the Unifi Controller, but you will not be able to do VLANs or FW rules with that setup. Traffic filtering (like blocking netflix) would work though... It would be good practice to learn your way around the controller. To do this, you would need to put your mesh in AP mode so that they get their IPs from the UDM. The WiFi settings will still need to be setup on the Mesh units themselves. The UDM can not assign wifi names and passwords to non Unifi devices. But this would work.
Hi. Can you do a video about setting up users and groups? Does not appear to be the same even from 1 year ago. Trying to add users to protect to view cameras but the options other vids have are not the options I see and the only Group I have is just the main group.
In this case the connection maxes at 1Gb. I usually do that for 10Gb. However, that being said, you can absolutely use an SFP for that truck connection.
Newbie question here. When having a udm and a switch both supporting 10gbe sfp+ lan ports, why no-one on UA-cam is showing connecting them via a 10gbe patch DAC cable, rather then wasting a 1Gbe standard ethernet port? Why not use 10Gbe when available?

Yes you can... With Cat6 cable, that run should stay under 330' ft though. Not sure how long of a run it would be... It can be any port really. Are you doing Unifi switches in both locations?
By default, every switch port on a Unifi switch is setup as a Trunk Port (talked about in my Newbies VLAN video... This means that you can choose any port you want. Switch to Switch ports should be setup as Trunk ports...
What if we already have our ISP gateway/wireless router and don't want to disrupt our family on the network during setup... what do you advise? Can we set up behind the ISP gateway and then get rid (remove/replace it) it after set up?
This is a good question. It depends on your ISP Equipment and what functions it is doing. My assumption is that it is a modem/router combo that is doing wifi for the the home. If the ISP Router/Gateway is acting like a modem too and is how the ISP delivers service to your home, then it may not be able to be removed. If that is the case, you would need to place the ISP device in front of the Unifi Gateway... When you are ready to get it out of the equation, you could log into and turn off the WiFi or put the device in bridge mode which turns off its router functionality... But, like I said, it depends on the equipment.

I'm quintuple checking everything to assure that I do the best I can to both set up the way I intend, AND does so with little to no risk of disrupting the experience of the members of our household. This includes pulling WAN from my (Cox) my ISP's gateway as it continues to run DHCP to provide services across the home. So far this is working just fine. However, we plan to use the modem designed for this stack as well... AFTER all of the Subnets, VLANS, WAPs, etc are set up, and the local clients are reliably online.
So, what you can do is to plug in your Unifi gateway behind the Cox device and set everything up in the Unifi setup... Maybe set the WiFi to a different name as the Cox temporarily during this process so your devices don't jump over to the Unifi network before you are ready for them to.... Then when you are ready to cut over, you can put the Cox devices in bypass mode which makes it act like a modem only... and move your devices to then change the Unifi Wifi to the same thing that you Cox was set to and all your devices will just automatically join the new Unifi network... Boom...

APs are physically connected devices. Mesh systems communicate with each other wirelessly and only require power from a power outlet. Mesh comes in handy when you don't have Cat6 cabling to connect your network. APs are connected via Cat6 cabling to a switch and that is how they communicate and get their power.
I can't get UDM Pro to see Switch Flex 2.5G 5. These switches are brand new. They don't show up for adoption even when directly plugged into a port on the UniFi switch.
I have seen this be an issue when firmware is out of date on one or both of the devices. If you connect them and plug a device into the Flex switch, can it get online? It should be able to whether it is adopted or not... I would verify connectivity and then maybe look at firmware.
@@ethernetblueprint Thanks for your reply! I swear I replied yesterday with the solution that I found, but UA-cam seems to have eaten my comment. Here's the gist of what I wrote. Hope it helps someone else: Instead of showing up in UniFi Devices or Client Devices, I found them by going to: Settings > Networks > Default 1 > IP Leases After clicking on IP Leases, I see the IPs of other devices, and the Flex is the last one. When I click on the Flex, that's where a sidebar pops up, and gives me the option to adopt. After that, it takes a long time updating, but once the updating completes, then it shows up in UniFi Devices.

(sorry for the delay, I have been out of town) Yes, if the device is doing more, it will use more resources, but it is designed to handle anything you have plugged directly into it. It is pretty powerful. But, like you mention, if you are looking for faster than 1Gb, then you would want to add a 10Gb switch via 10Gb DAC and let it do more of the lifting...

You absolutely should use the 10Gb DAC cable if thats an option. Its even extremely affordable!

I thought the UDE-SE has 8 POE ports? Can I connect cameras into it and not have a switch?
You can use the SE POE ports for cameras
Yes you can. The SE has 6 Poe ports and 2 Poe+ ports. Great for cameras and a couple APs.
