"REAL" KARATE - IS WHAT WE TEACH!
For close to five decades, the Academy has taught Ryukyu Kenpo Kobujutsu (琉球 拳法 古武術). Traditional Oriental teachings with modern Western training methods. Its original purpose was to train elite military forces operating on the 'Bleeding' edge of contact with the enemy. Full contact Bogu sparring for distancing, timing, power development, angles of attack, and desensitization training is utilized. Proper focus on targets, striking, and body weapons, done slowly for memory retention, is emphasized. Modern and improvised weapons are taught. It is REAL Karate the kind that was taught before "modern" systems, when advanced students and Masters were FEARED, and it was only taught to professionals whose careers dealt with life and death situations in Okinawa. Our system utilizes the original teachings of Shigeru Nakamura and Seiyu Oyata. In 2023 the secrecy was lifted to allow the benefits of its methods to become known to the public. (word limit reached)

Exercise One Only
I was requested to show exercise one without all of the commentary. I was alone and did not realize the frame was too small to show the upper body and movements. I figure most of you will be happy not to have to gaze upon my mug!

Ideas Regarding Your Kata

Don't get locked into the mindset that prevents you from exploring the myriad ways in which the movements of your kata can be interpreted. NO ONE today knows the reasons the originators of the kata had when they made them up. They've been dead for, in some cases, centuries. Their culture was not our culture. Put NO stock in the thought that being Oriental gave them an advantage over today's non...

This is what Bogu Kumite used to look like in 1983-4. We still have point bogu but that is reserved for those who can't migrate to the newer more violent version. The crowd noises were so extreme (screaming, yelling, etc.) that it was decided to mute them. When I learn how to add voice-overs I will start doing so. Until then Do not think Bogu Kumite is how you would defend yourself against asoc...

First I want to apologize for the wind. That is why we are building our own dojo. So we won't have all of the noise pollution that the other sites we can use are afflicted with. Now that you have built your Proper Makiwara (see: How to Construct a Proper Makiwara (Machiwara)), I will explain how to Properly USE your Makiwara. Just in time for NY resolutions!
Thank you!! I love this exercise and do it to warm up before classes no matter what class I'm attending. Now that I'm moving to a different state with no Kenpo instruction, I'm glad there will be videos I can access when my brain acts like Swiss cheese and forgets things my body knows so well.
You're welcome! It's great that you find it useful.
Thank you Hanshi!

Excellent. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks
You are welcome!
Hello Sir! I tried to get in touch with you on FB. /JJ
Thank you 😃
You're welcome 😊
That cat stance is gonna get you killed
Why? What is wrong with it?
Why do you step forward after you kick with it? You're throwing yourself in the line of fire. I will admit your naihanchin stance is good tho
@@ryukyu-kenpoI don't wanna harp on your style because I practice a different one, I just want to understand a little better why you'd choose to land forward instead of avoiding a punch or giving distance from a kick or something
You do ask a very good question. The reason can be considered in two ways. (Remember, this is a drill) First, I want them to practice putting their body weight behind their kicks so they don't bounce back with the impact, but rather deliver as much power into the target as they can with the kick. Second, I want them to know and be able to handle what happens when they do miss the target. True, you do 'blunder' forward but this prepares them for this possibility and not to be distracted when it occurs and to be able to continue the attack or mount a defense. I hope this explains it. Normally they kick a heavy (100 kilos or more) bag or our outdoor kicking posts (that do not move). Here, they are kicking the air that does not absorb the impact.
@ryukyu-kenpo Fair enough. So let's assume for a second that the kick misses and your in a vulnerable spot for a second, what would be your next course of action? I'd love to know your input on some defense
I know it's a big ask, but can we get a bunkai breakdown?
The short answer is no. The longer is, if we do they will be Patreon videos.
Naihanchi stance - wide stance with feet inwards, knees outwards groin push forward. Don't thank.
Kinda confused here. What are you trying to say? Naihanchi stance is one and a half shoulders wide - max, feet are parallel on the outer sides, knees pointing to the sides, hips are tilted forward. This according to Oyata and me.
@@ryukyu-kenpo when you have toes pointed in and knees pusher out then muscles are tense. Try it. What you say is mor likely kiba dachi- horse stance. This is how we do it in Okinawa Shorin Ryu under Master Kenyu Chinen ua-cam.com/video/TJwhqFesoE4/v-deo.htmlsi=ajvXWs62GP140obE
Also naihanchi movement is under your heel not around your foot. Forward punch is actually ura ken
@@mrantek7373 I had a reply almost completed when by the magic of my phone it disappeared! Our systems are different and I'm teaching and doing as Choki Motobu, Shigeru Nakamura, and Seiyu Oyata's ways were taught to me originally. They are my lineage for this kata and I cannot disavow what has been handed down to me. I am happy that you took the time and effort to post your thoughts on this kata. Your way is valid as much as is ours. You have your reasons, we have ours. Keep up your learning and questioning. It's good for you and the people you interact with. Under or around the foot? For us around means a sweep of the foot. We step with the foot fully on the ground, just like our cat stance where the front foot is flat on the ground.
I remember sparring with my instructor and walked into a round house to the face, of course I had full bogu gear but even then it was absolutely stunning 😂😂😂
Those were the days! Hard to get anyone interested in doing the work it takes to excel in Bogu.
I’m sure you’re aware of hit wines, or Jit da Jow. I use it as I’m 66 now and still makiwara. Like your videos as I knew Oyata through another instructor, but I wasn’t fond of the politics. Shalom shalom
My student Boaz Steigman is a Chinese Medical practitioner and supplies me with Dit da jow. The politics sucked but I'm senior to everyone except Greg Lindquist. Unlike him, I'm still in excellent shape and thanks to Oyata have developed the self-defense tactics in line with his original teachings. At this point they bear no relationship with what is being taught by those I left behind in the states. The weapon work he drilled into me looks nothing like what they claim he taught them later. I haven't filmed any of it yet. I hope to get around to it sometime in the future. There's too much I need to do before that. Hope you enjoyed the video. I don't script anything. It just comes out like it does and I have to edit some of it out! Shabbat Shalom!

This guy is a fake martial artists 😢put this clown in a ring with a street fighter and you will be shocked. 😢
You have an opinion. I'm a Jim Harrison student. Three years full contact US heavyweight champion. Retired undefeated. Thrown out of the first Top Ten full contact national for excessive contact. Banned for life from Taekwondo tournaments for excessive contact at the first national championship by Wey Sing Kim. Oh! I taught sentry removal, Individual Tactical Training to include weapons (retention, removal, and use), and what the military calls Hand to Hand Combat but nothing like that taught to "regular" troops because these were Spec ops troops for several years in the US Army. Your "street fighter" would lose his eyes then life before he even knew it! Wow! That enough bragging for you?😅
I trained under Master Oyata for 23 years. This is very accurate as to the execution of the Kata. God Bless you Seyua Oyata. You will forever be in your students heart and souls.
Thank you for your support! We try to present Nakamura and Oyata's kata as they were originally taught by them.

I just about fell out of my chair on "calorically inhanced"😅. Great technique.
Shalom.
Why does George Dillman still call it Kempo.
He's invested in the term. Oyata and his crowd crapped on George for no good reason after George brought Oyata into public awareness and ushered in Oyata's ability to make beaucoup bucks. Before George, Oyata was an unknown nobody. Until George talked to Black Belt magazine, they had never heard of him and it took someone of George's notoriety to get their interest in finding out about him. The rest is history.
@ryukyu-kenpo I wouldn't go THAT far. If Taika used George to get his name out there, George was just as guilty of using photo ops with various masters to build HIS fame. Even though he only attended a few of Taika's seminars. When he started all the no touch nonsense is when Taika and the organization broke away from any association with Dillman's organization
Thank you Sensei
Those were some awesome fights! :)
Great info :) Sorry about the poor quality though... I was trying a new technique and it clearly didn't work
I know you are just demonstrating the movement of the Kata but that should never prevent you from putting maximum effort in to the Kata movements How we train is how we fight Putting NO effort in to Kata is putting no effort in to fighting and we will get destroyed ..
Kata and fighting are two different aspects of the system. Fighting is NOT the purpose of Kata training. Thinking that Kata is the same as fighting is a very modern concept not supported by history. As Oyata put it to me, Kata is meant to be misunderstood. Your Master teaches you the truth of Kata and what you are doing. That is his job. What looks like a punch is not a punch, any more than a block is a block. Appearances are meant to be deceiving to the unwelcome outside observer. It is desirable for others to "monkey see, monkey do" and know no better. Let them wear themselves out physically and not be able to absorb the mental aspects of combat training. We are training for life and death combat, not 'fighting'!
In addition to my previous response, this is a training video. As such, doing it with full power and speed would destroy any value it might have. The movements would not be observable in the video. All you would see is a blur. I know. I have made that mistake. We had to redo the entire video. What a waste of time.
That was very clear and easy to follow along. Thank you
Glad it was helpful! We put out an update with even more details. Thank you for your comment. It helps get the algorithm to expand the reach of our videos and help others in their training.
Thank you so much for asking and sorry I wasn't able to get down there yet. Last month the rod that was put in my femur broke and fractured my bone in two places. Spent two weeks in the hospital getting a stronger one put in. That's four surgeries in less than a year. I have to go back to the hospital Tuesday for one more procedure on this leg. I pray it won't be much longer when I can travel down to meet you and purchase the uniform. I apologize for the delay. Hope to see you before long. Purim Sameach.
Shavuah Tov and Purim Sameach! I look forward to meeting you! Get well soon. You will need physical therapy before we can start your lessons. But, when we do we will begin very gently without a lot of stress.
Excellent video on how to strike the makiwara. Very good job on demonstrating the proper fundamentals.
Thank you! How are you doing? Haven't heard from you in a while. I've got your uniform ready for you when you are ready to get it.

My knuckles are still hard from using the Makiwara at the Strauss Dojo!!
That was exactly why we had them! It's forever when done properly and without damaging you.
As a civilian karateka I agree with your definition of Martial Arts.
Very interesting. I was at Greg's school 95-96. Steve Stark taught most of the classes. I wanted to know if the one touch ko was legit, let Greg try it on me. Didn't work. Later jim Logue and Gary Shull, none could do it. I was deflated . I'm glad you mentioned it, would love to get your thoughts on the kyusho.
What specifically? I covered the techniques as he taught the others. That's kyushu. Consensual violence. I started teaching non-consensual violence techniques just last year. I come to the United States every once in a while. They're talking about having a seminar in the Kansas City area this year. David Altman wants Billy Wilcox and Gerald Wicklund to organize it. I'd like it to be a couple of days long.
Greetings, I was curious how he explained the “vital point” aspect to you in the early days. I started with Shiro Shintaku back in the mid 80s, just when Shiro was switching over to Oyata’s style, so he’d come do a seminar and Ko some people and that was amazing to see (I was about 14 years old). Given my youth, Oyata himself would never do anything to me, even when I requested it many times. The knowledge was so hush hush at the time, but there were those trying to explain it via Chinese medicine, or even Western medicine, etc… just curious how Master Oyata explained it himself in the days prior to the mainstream exposure. Even when I questioned Steven Stark, Greg, Jim Logue, Gary Shull, and students of Albert Geraldi, it seemed they either didn’t know how he was doing it or he simply didn’t share with them the ‘key’ to it. One of my good friends who sponsored me for the shodan test (which was just performing Naihanchi Shodan in front of Master Oyata) was Darrin Renee (RIP), one of Geraldi’s students, and he honestly said he had 0 clue about kyusho, as Geraldi never taught him. Darrin was 2nd degree at the time I met him. I was admonished more than once for even asking! And heaven forbid they see me practicing my Philippine Kali…. Even though now so many of them do it alongside their Kobudo. I was just supposed to practice the drills and not question it. So, I moved on, but never lost my respect for Oyata’s skill. As for many of his “top” students, that’s another issue. I was happy to find your posts, to hear some honest straightforward talk without the mumbo jumbo. I’d love to hear your take on it in a video, 40 mins 50 mins, this is history, it’s important. @@ryukyu-kenpo
@@drsssssssss Basically he did not believe in the "chi" nonsense. He stated that they worked on blood flow and nerve disruptions creating interruptions in the heart functioning. Almost (though not all) of the reactions you saw were faked for the audience. what he did to George Dillman the first time they met was real. Later that night I ko'd one of George's students with a forearm strike. And ended up in a book, Founders, Masters, and Leaders of American Martial Arts" published in 1985. It was a big surprise to me!
No offense John, but that is not quite what Oyata had in mind.
Can you elaborate on your comment?
I spent 10 years with him. What do you think he had in mind? Only Greg Lindquist spent more time with him than I did and Greg only did kata while he taught me Kumite and fighting.
I learned all these hidden techniques shown here and more when I studied this system, Love doing this kata but what he said about mental gymnastics is correct and it may even be closer to mental masturbation, Don't fool yourself into thinking any of these techniques work in a real fight.
Some are for training and others DO work. The Naihanchi kick to the knee is one. We didn't have a bat to demonstrate with, but what I did to Yoshi does work. I just don't show my follow-ups, normally. If I'd had the bat, I'd have shown the easy-to-do takeaway and use on the attacker. Facebook has warned me that showing some of my stuff will get me banned. Most of Oyata's kata moves (originally) were entry movements leading to the solution. His later stuff was basically crap for public consumption. Geraldi agreed with me that it was for the sake of making money. Had to add two commas!
Thank you sensei

I hate computers. This is the third time attempting to complete this reply. The others were wiped out, the first when, basically, completed. You are an idiot. THAT'S what you got from my reply? That YOU are an idiot? I don't recall or see where I called you an idiot. I used hyperbole to get my point across regarding the speed and power that I was going to use, which was explained at the beginning of the training video. It was general not specific in nature. Yeah! A 747 at 3000 feet overhead can be a bit of a distraction. I don't eat an American diet and mine is essentially natural; so, supplements are unnecessary. "your fist connecting a half second to your opponent before your foot comes down" is covered in other videos of ours. Essential in technique execution but impossible in proper kata execution. You can't maintain your balance. "Maps"? Never heard of them. In 1976, Oyata, Sensei came to the United States. I was waiting for him when he arrived. Master Oyata gave my Dojo the name, Ryukenkan, or Academy of Ryukyu Kempo*. I was Master Oyata's first 'transfer' student. For ten years, I, daily, learned and practiced Master Oyata's Ryukyu Kempo. From three times a week to almost daily, I was in contact with him. Not a week passed that I didn't learn, personally, from Oyata, in private lessons, small group classes, or personal conversations. In 1977, Master Oyata conferred upon me a Shihan Menjo (師範 免状). Oyata promoted me to Renshi and 6th Dan Black Belt in 1984 before we traveled to a photo shoot with Black Belt Magazine. At this time, I started traveling with Master Oyata across the United States, giving seminars and interviews with him. I represented Master Oyata in Europe and the Middle East. As a result of a chance meeting during a seminar given by Master Oyata where I was assisting in the demonstrations and teaching, I was surprised a year later to find that I had been included in the book, Masters, Founders, and Leaders of American Martial Arts published in 1985. Oyata didn't call anyone an idiot. He called them "Stuping" (translation: Stupid). As far as Naihanchi Shodan, I sent you the link to Chosei Motobu (Choki Motobu's son) so you can see the differences and similarities between the way Oyata taught me and Choki Motobu's way that Master Nakamura taught it. PS. I don't know it all. I just know the way we do it. Check out Motobu's video.
Thank you, sensi. i am humbled to the core, and I apologize for playing a idiot I called myself this. I do apologize, too. You I will watch what you sent me thank you very much. I studied under Shehan Don Weeks kck ì now I live in a small town 100 miles south. Alot of good Fishing n wild life. Thank you for the free lesson in humility and being humble. I've been wanting to talk to Don Weeks for years now. He was one of my favorite students and was a good instructor. Do you know how I could get in touch with him? His big mistake was listening to and trusting the snake Ted Winningham. What Oyata and his crowd did to Don was unconscionable and disgusting. Rocky Leavitt told me when I returned to Independence, Mo. for one of my seminars at Gerald Wicklund and Billy Wilcox's dojo. @@Rick-qo4iq
@ryukyu-kenpo I ŵas with Don until he moved to ĺawrence Kansas. He was looking for a larger student base .it was when he was by K. U. Medical center he had a pretty good student base I remember Rocky good man what I knew of him. I was accused of being a spy for oyata don't know what that was about. ? Accept every Thursday it was me and 2 black belts they made me promise not to say anything they would teach me one thing on my level the rest on thier level people noti ced. I'm sorry about that. That time in my life I was completely focused on my training.honestly I don't even know if shehan Don Weeks is even alive but I'm going to get on computer see if I. Can track him down last known Lawrance Kansas I will let you know one way or another I am very happy i met you Sensi. Will talk more thank you
@@ryukyu-kenpo I'm trying to locate him. I'd love to see him myself
My connection to Master Odo's system was through Master Bill Marron, Master Odo himself, and Master Butch Spain. I know of Master Bruce Heilman, but not personally. While I do teach several of Master Odo's kata, I cannot claim to be teaching his way in anything I do. I'm an Oyata - Nakamura system guy teaching their core Kata, Bogu Kumite, and many other things. The books are online for sale. Where I don't know. Mine were gifted to me by Oyata and others. I hope you find what you need.
I recently started learning (back in October last year) Okinawa Kenpo Karate-Kobudo from Sensei Walt Moyer. If I remember correctly, he learned from both Master Odo and Hanshi Heilman (Who was also one of Odo's students.) Would you happen to know either of them? Also, is it possible to get a copy of that kenpo book you have?
I thought you wasgoing to do it correct you left out alot of leg sweepsthe few you did you lost alot of power n speed wish this was exsplaind to us
First off, I did all four of the knee strikes. There are no leg sweeps in Oyata's versions. There are only four of these movements, no more. Only an idiot would full speed and power kick himself in the knee to show it. Secondly, I mentioned that, at the time, I had tendonitis (now gone) in my ankle. It was affecting my balance and foot movement a couple of times. This was filmed as a training video not to show off a competition quality performance. (Not that I was any good at kata competition😅!)

I met kyosho n Tuite
@@Rick-qo4iq Gotcha! This video was not meant to include techniques that can be derived from the kata. I want to set up a paywall for these kinds of things. Unfortunately my tech abilities leave so much to be desired that it requires massive outside help that I'm not receiving. It's a massive undertaking that I hope to complete in my lifetime.
Sensei, well stated. The Achilles tendonitis seems to affect us old guys.
Nice. Isshinryu looks pretty much the same but has some minor differences.
There are small differences in most ways of doing things. It's the way of the world!😊
Thank you very interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent videos. Thank you.
So nice of you
Der Künstler steht mit durchgedrückten Knien da, ganz steif. Respekt.
Good stuff. Long term Isshinryu Karate student here, so I'm very familiar with Naihanchi kata. I especially liked you correcting the pointless "wailing" fake kia some people do. Also liked the point about the knee kick at the end.
Has Lindquist gotten any better yet ? 🤣🤣🤣
Just fatter 😅
