There's also two traditional Tanbo katas, one that uses 1 Tanbo (Sekiun No Tanbo), the other that uses 2 Tanbo (Noburi Ryu No Tanbo)... so whether you have one or two sticks, you're good to go. I practice both. They're also easier to use than the Bo and Jo. I have some physical problems with my arms neck and back, and can't really use staffs anymore, but I can still easily use the shorter sticks.
Thank you for your comment. Tanbo Kihon is merely the beginning of our Tanbo kata. I do not think that there is a need for a kata using a single Tanbo. Oyata taught techniques for using a single Tanbo including proper hand positions. Yes they definitely are easier to work with than using a Bo or Jo. It's nice knowing that there are other Tanbo kata being practiced out there. I'd never heard of any others. But that's on me! Keep training and be safe.
I always learn something useful when I watch your videos and your sense of humor slways gives me s good belly 😂. Do you have the tanbos made here in Israel? Also kama say oli?
One: Your uniform is ready for you to pick up. Two: We make all of our Tanbo here in Kfar Adumim. Three: Kama have been declared "weapons of war" in Israel evidently because the common agricultural tool sold in all Oriental countries to harvest rice is an existential threat to the Israeli military, as is the civilian AR-15 sporting rifle. But we sell the Communist sickle the kibbutzim use, to replace the Oriental version!
I'm not familiar enough with Eskrima to know a lot of their tactics or movements. But I do know that they use rattan in their training and the Tanbo are much heavier and not used in such close quarters. The real strikes are not capable of being used with an opponent safely. Even kata is not done with the necessary power to inflict damage. I use a bag for striking. Unfortunately, I have destroyed a few bags doing just that! All I can say is - try! See what you can do. And failure is not a reason to stop trying!
The diameter of the Tonfa is very much determined by how they feel in your grip. The ones we make are 1" in diameter. Ours are custom made with a 3/4" flat on one side for the thumb to rest on. They become uncomfortable for me to use when they get larger. Bigger hands might alleviate this stress.
I loved this vid, thanks Sensei! Your variation of educational content with humour always appealed to me...
Glad to hear it!
Omg I want this guy to teach me now,
Thank you.

DO YOU MEAN EXACTLY THAT FORERUNNER OF EMPTY DOUBLE HANDED KARATE OR THE KARATE WEAPON ONLY?
Karate weapons. Two sticks. Simplest weapons of all.
What is your preferred diameter of Tanbo?
