I have tried Gamblin for this, and it has a very subtle granular quality compared to Dorlands, and that granular quality has the potential to disrupt the gouache paint film and cause streaking. At least that's what happened when I tried it. BTW this process works on watercolor, too! One of the artists in my building often mounts his larger watercolors onto wood panel, sprays the watercolor with some kind of fixative(I think), and does the wax treatment using Dorland's. It was exciting to find someone else who discovered this idea!
