Canon 30D with a Tokina 11-16 and Canon 55-250 Zoom Lens
It's tough to get interesting shots in early spring. I went out with a Canon 30D , a Canon 55-250mm zoom and a Tokina 11-16mm zoom to see what I could come up with. By using a couple of cropping techniques, average exposures were transformed into more interesting compositions. This video shows you how.

The Viltrox adaptor allows you to use Canon EF mount lenses on the M50 and reduces the crop factor, but at a cost. Shooting in the Woods With a Canon 30D and 10D
i sold my 5d that served me well over 15 years and got a pristine 7d secondhand for 150bucks and 2k shuttercounts. i couldnt believe it til i hold it in my hand. its a great update except losing the full frame, but for that i got a used d700 hence i planned to switch to nikon anyways plus prime only lenses. im sure my 7d will be the goto guy for outside on bad weather, sports, streets or else. great image quality, well faster than my old 5d fitting my last canon lens i have 24-105
The 7D is a tough, almost all-weather workhorse. Sounds like you have a great plan.
got one for 50 euro!
Congrats! You'll love it and it's a lifetime camera. I'll never get rid of mine.
Great simple video that goes to the point - these are great images!! It looks like film!! Great character!
Thanks! The 10D is a real gem and a camera that a person can enjoy for a lifetime.
Appreciate this video! Although I'm a Nikon shooter, I've been shooting on a crop sensor Nikon D3400 and love the image quality, although it took a while getting used to focusing manually instead of Auto focus...your information is VERY HELPFUL...THANKS!
Hey thanks! Glad it was helpful.
Very nice. I have a wonderful IIIf-RD, but with the 50/2 Summitar. It's a jewel and produces amazingly fine images.
You're lucky to have it! A Leica is a lifetime camera, no matter what vintage.
hello, thank you for posting this.
Hey thanks! Very happy you liked it. I hope you find it useful. I still use my 10D to this day.
Honestly unless you need an APS-C Camera, (And then you should be looking at the 10x range (i.e. 50/60/70/77/80, or 90D range.), for the 200€ or so Dollars burning a hole in your pocket, you couldn't do worse than a 5D MkII, and that should make any Dinosaur brained wannabe Photographer happy. As it looks like a 35mm Body hur-dur... And more importantly still, actually operates like one! Nothing is quite as infuriating as trying to faff 'round with Crop factors, and how that plays into your Apature settings, which leads you down the dark side of taking a mortgage out to buy some f2.8 glass, when f4 on FF just works!
The 5d mkii is, in fact, 35mm.
Ok perhaps in 2009, with the closest Body being the 50D 15Mpx 1500$ (in 2008), so the 7D, with it's presumably better sealing 1x vs 10x vs 100x vs the entry level 1000x series. Make it an obviously better choice. The additional 10 AF points over the 9 thats on the 5/6D 40/50D is also a plus. But, when the 70/80, and more importantly the 90D came out, what was the point of the 7D? About the only thing I can think of might be the bust speed, reportedly on par with the 1D series. Which was only possible (at that price), because it WAS APS-C.
Carefully composed and narrated, thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
I still use one today, 2024
Good for you. It's a reliable workhorse like no other camera in its price range along with being a pleasure to shoot with.
What lenses you used and you can recommend
@@BobLee333 the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 throughout the zoom range is an excellent lens, with IS too, or as Sigma call it OS. There are a few Canon lenses dedicated to the crop sensor that are all good. I've recently started using a 6D, but I'll keep the 7D and still use it.
Great shots.... They are harder to get then they look. What ISO did you use? I know that they probably have to be perfectly still - to get a good clear image. Did you use a tripod? Thanks.
Thanks. I use the lowest ISO possible, which is 100 on the 10D. 200 maybe depending on the light. All the images are hand held. The 10D is a heavy camera so it's pretty easy to hold it steady. I really have a soft spot for the 10D. No other camera that I own produces images like it does. Good luck to you and your shooting!
@@jeffstefan3027 - Thanks for the details. I do see colors seem to be more radiant on the 10D... That makes me want to get one. I'm curious about it.
Nice camera and video. We still-photo photographers have an amazing amount of EOS cameras to choose from. // Good job.
Thanks and I'm glad you liked the video. You're right- there's tons of EOS cameras and they are all good.
Just bought 2nd hand 7d with 18k shutter count this January 2024. I'm really impressed on how fast the AF of this camera! Looking forward to learn more about wildlife photography and just needed to get used on setting this up since I'm a Fuji xt100 user 😊
This will be a great camera for you. It's still used for shooting sporting events, air shows and the like. It's fast, reliable and easy to use. Good luck with it.
Does the canon7D crop factor affects the lens focal length?
Yes it does. The crop factor is used to determine a lens true focal length when using a crop sensor camera, such as a canon 7D. The crop factor for Canon crop sensor cameras is 1.6. So a 50mm lens is really 1.6 x50 = 80mm, which is a mild telephoto focal length. You need to be aware of this when buying lenses. I hop this helps.
Nice work with your Canon 10d. I own a Canon G9. That too gives lovely colours.
Hard to beat the color quality of the older cameras.
Thanks for posting this! On the recommendation of a friend who is an expert photographer, I upgraded from the EOS 300D I had used since 2003 and picked up a used 7D and a used 20D, along with some decent-quality lenses. I consider myself still a beginner, because until recently, I had almost never used anything other than full auto. Now, I'm sticking mainly to Tv and Av modes. With all the videos I've watched about this camera, you're the only one I've seen who has made it a point to mention the 1.6 crop factor, which will actually be of great use to me.
I use two 120 roll-film pinhole cameras: the Holga 120WPC and the Zero Image 6x9. The Holga comes with a 6x9cm mask and a 6x12cm mask. I only use the 6x9cm mask. The Zero Image 6x9 comes with two dividers that allow me to shoot 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, or 6x9cm images. However, since I have no desire to shoot any of the smaller aspect ratios, I only use it to shoot 6x9cm images.
It sounds like you know your way around Holgas!
Love these shots with the 30D! Thanks for all the tips on composition, cropping and gear.
What’s the quickest way to get the pictures from the canon 10d? I just bought it
Hi Philip. I bought a cheap memory reader from Amazon that costs around $10. I take the compact flash card out of the camera and use that to import pictures into my PC. That's the easiest way to go in my opinion. Good luck with your 10D.
I like your approach demonstrating that cheaper used cameras can produce very fine and sharp photos. I think all new in photography should consider a used dslr, there are so much out there to pick.
Thor, I agree. Just because something is older doesn't mean that it isn't capable, and possibly more reliable. Thanks for the comment.
Pls don't confuse the field of view with focal length. APSC cameras have narrower field of view but the SAME focal length as full frame cameras. It is the focal length that will render the shape of subjects face regardless the size of sensor. Otherwise, great information and I am looking to buy a 7D in 2023.
I received one of these cameras from my uncle for my birthday, and all the little buttons and dials are pretty intimidating after only shooting with my phone for a long time. Thank you for this basic overview of the controls.
You're welcome! I hope you enjoy your 10D- just be patient with it and you will get great, one of a kind images.
👍👍👍❤
You are my hero! I have a 10D that I had relegated to the back of the closet many years ago. I am just an amateur and used to love taking photos with this camera, but I drifted away from photography. The spark is back and I am trying to re-learn as much as I can (or more accurately learn thoroughly what I wasn't disciplined enough to learn when I was younger) and reallllly needed this video. Thank you so much :)
Hi Kathy. Thanks for the kind words. Funny- I just pulled out my 10D and 30D to do some shooting for a new video now that Spring has rolled around. I still love my old 10D since there is no other sensor like it that produces such painterly images. Good luck with yours, and I'm sure you'll get back up to speed in a matter of hours.
We'd like to collaborate with you. How can we get in touch?
Hello and thanks for reaching out. My email address is jeffrey.stefan@gmail.com. That's the best way to communicate. Thanks.
Just bought one today, coming from using a canon rp and an old film al1 I wanted to see what the classic digital photography would be like compared to the newest (sort of) features and the slow, pure film experience. Really excited to take the 10d out soon
You will love this camera, especially coming from the film world as I did. There is nothing like it. It's old and you have to be patient, but the images it produces are unique. Good luck!
@@jeffstefan3027 yup completely right, been a few days since it arrived and I love the way it has that film effect of slowing down the experience and it really does make the whole process more enriching and valuable. Though I do think there is a time and a place for the 10d, it will definitely get a lot more use than my other cameras.
@@legendarypot8oanimates160 Great! Enjoy your 10D!
Would you say that the cable release is a must have on the Zero Image 2000?
Yes, a cable release is a must. Pinhole cameras take long exposures and it's almost impossible not to jiggle the camera when exposing by hand.
@@jeffstefan3027 Thank you! I was looking at the different models and your video made it look like the way to go!
Thank you for this, sir.
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked it and I hope it was helpful.
We can record with a 30d ?
Thymus, if you mean video, no, the 30D does not have video capability. Video on Canon DSLRs became available on the Canon 60D.
@@jeffstefan3027 Thx!
Jeff, these images are exquisite. I also use a 10D, and I also love it for the painterly quality of the images it produces. I think the shot of the tree at 3:50 is my favorite.
Thanks. The 10D is an amazing camera and forces one to stop and think about composition, since it's inherently slow. Good luck with yours!
The Canon 7D is the ultimate APS-C sensor camera, I've got an EF-S 18-135mm Nano USM IS on mine, and there is nothing it can't do. If I need a little extra reach I slap on my EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM and I've got the equivalent of 480mm at the long end. I'll never let go of my 7D, 18mp is right in the sweet spot. I've also got a 5D Mark II for full-frame work, really wanting to add a 12.8mp 5D, but that's just me being greedy.
xfire, I use both the 7D and 5D Mark III but sometimes I just like using the 7D. I agree- I know of no other APSC sensor camera that is better. Good luck with yours!
Still use my 7d as a backup and will never sell it, AMAZING value for money ratio, solid workhorse, the only negative point is that ISO noise is a bit too much in the higher ranges.
You're right about the ISO noise, but overall the 7D is hard to beat.
This camera is lacking in so many modern settings, but there is nothing out here that is replicating its unique image capture. Everything Sony, Leica, Lumix and Fuji make has a look that is a cheap LUT away from replicating.
Acedia, I agree!
Jeff, My Name is Roger L Turner Sr and I Was Give A Canon 10D and I Just Love This Camera..I Always Used A Canon AE-1/AE-1Program Until I Got This My Real Digital ❤
Hi Roger- you're a film guy! The AE-1 was (and is) a great camera and you have a real advantage moving from film to shooting digitally. Having a film background you already can handle manual, aperture and shutter priority modes. The 10D is still one of my favorite cameras, and I use it all the time. Even though it has a lot of limitations, the images, even at the lower megapixel count, have a certain quality to them that all other digital cameras lack. Good luck with it and with a little care it will serve you for many, many years to come.
Thank You So Much..
Reciprocity failure? No mention, but with fp4 you have to deal with it.
I'm getting one next week.
Rich_Lex, good for you! You will love this camera.
Thank you - great comparison. Helpful
Thanks, Amira!
How do you transfer the pictures to your camera?
Aziz, do you mean transferring the pictures from the camera to a computer? There's a compact disk card in the camera that holds the images and I use a simple card reader plugged into a computer to transfer images from the camera to a computer. The card readers are inexpensive (about 17 US dollars on Amazon) and plug into a USB port on the computer. I'm not sure what you meant by transferring pictures to a camera. I hope this helps!
@@jeffstefan3027 Thanks for the answer Jeff. I was trying to connect to the computer via USB cable, but I got "busy" warning on the camera screen, then it totally stopped working. Battery is full, it turned on but no anything. It's pretty new camera despite being an old model. Do you know how to recover it? I appreciate if you can help.

I would hold on to the 7D. If for no other purpose it's a great backup camera.
Thanks! 😉👍
Now one year later, I can proudly declare the 7D is a wonder camera. So, I bought two used bodies with low shutter counts. What a lovely gem they are. By default I'm an old DSLR lover. So, last year I bought one 5D Classic and one 1D Mark IV, both used but in excellent conditions. Bottomline is; I love my old DSLRs and don't see any need for MILCs. I don't do videos so, least concerned about it. Thank you for the video. BTW, lovely images.
Quazi, thanks for the comments. I've always wanted a 1D which is an indestructible camera. I love my old DSLRs also.
@@jeffstefan3027, I suggest you look up MPB used camera store. It shows products available in the EU and UK. Looking at your lens I can yell you only use that 24-70
Avindra, I use the 24-70 most of the time, but I also use a 50 and 35mm fixed lens. I also use an 85mm f1.8 fixed lens a lot, but I really like the quality and flexibility of the 24-70. Very perceptive of you!
👍Keep making reviews Sir.
Will do. Thanks!
I’ve been trying to get my 10D camera to take pictures but I don’t know how to get to that feature since i don’t know how to get to that point where I can see what the lens sees
Wolfjuul, if you're starting out use Auto mode and focus on composing shots. You are seeing what the lens sees already, since DSLRs have "through the lens" viewfinders. Take small steps to get where you want to be then change to Av or Tv and play with that. Being a good photographer takes a lot of time and practice, but that's what makes it fun. Good luck!
@@jeffstefan3027 thanks so much! I do have one thing that I’m having a small problem with is that why the exposure is so dark when I take a picture inside for practice. How do I fix that?
I fully agree. I got one used from a local camera store (with warranty) as well as a handful of lenses over time and I keep finding more and more things to like about this thing. As you said, I'll be holding onto it hahaha
