I am so glad you mentioned Moira for the design aspect. Her design doesnt have much subtle aspects but all of the obvious ones are clear and very well done. You can clearly tell what kind of person she is just by looking at her. And this goes for most, if not all, of the Overwatch characters. <3

It might be stockholm syndrome but after sitting through this video I find myself facinated with these characters and almost liking some of them, especially watching the trust route I found myself actually kinda caring about what happens to them (except harrison hate him, particularly liked Annika, Mia, Francisca, and Eva) and even pausing through some of the lines of the ones I liked to get a better idea of what was happening. Great video I loved this lmao- I wish this game was better, it makes me angry how it's made so poorly it reads as actively hostile to what it tries to represent. More specifically, I resonated with Annika more than I was expecting and it hit a bit close to home, and how shes treated throughout the video made me viscerally uncomfortable. It also reminded me of those things and makes me want to be more intentionally communicative about my relationship with my maturity and how others interact with it. Thanks for highlighting that, as uncomfy as it was (good gods)

I hope im not the only one who burst out laughing at the line "I want you to make love to me in a sauna" A. Idk what type of sauna theyre speaking but i think it would be very uncomfortable and B. It just sounds like the most stereotypical thing that you would have a finnish person to say. Just to hammer it home that theyre finnish.

There’s a great quote I can’t quite remember the source of: “Storybooks don’t tell children that dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. [Adults know too, though we call them by different names.] Storybooks tell children that dragons can be *beaten.”* I think part of the appeal of these stories is that they do what a lot of stories do-take an aspect of everyday human conflict-and dial it up to 11. In superhero stories, two friends arguing can quickly turn into a fistfight that destroys buildings not because the relationship is toxic & violent but because that’s how strongly they each hold their convictions and that’s what having a real, awful, heart-wrenching, drawn-out argument with a dear friend *feels like.* Similarly, though adults will often parrot “Children can be cruel,” childhood is still idealized in retrospect and children are often treated with a presumed helplessness & innocence of intention. Whereas I think everyone who’s ever dealt with social ostracization & outright bullying in school can agree that yeah, it sure feels like some of those other kids wanted you *dead.* That there was a maliciousness to it that adults would brush off, which other kids would lean into to get away with more. And any victim who ever had a bully pretend to be their friend or had a friend switch over to join the bullies knows that what it does to your ability to trust others, knows what it’s like to wonder if everyone who’s ever been nice to you was lying for one reason or another. And based on what I’ve heard from people who ended up as bystanders or bullies themselves, a lot of them felt like they had no choice, *someone* had to be in the role of victim, and if it wasn’t the person they hurt then it was going to be them. What I’m saying is the appeal of these stories is multifold. But beyond the shock & horror & glamour of it all, there’s a few truths that strike a chord with a hell of a lot of people: 1. Empowerment fantasies are potent, and the larger the disempowered state of the victim, the stronger the catharsis when they throw it off. Unfair systems, unhelpful or hurtful adults, the general sense of powerlessness that comes with being a kid, these stories all say that if you’re clever and find people you can trust, you can overcome that. 2. Being in public school sure felt like being trapped in a killing game in every way but the murder for some of us. It’s recognizing the self in the other and the catharsis therein. …Also, if anyone’s read this beast this far, I’d like to call out one of the few things the Hunger Games movies did better than the books, which is humanizing the Careers. Cato’s broken speech at the end about how he should’ve known he was dead from the start was fully movie original, and it rips my heart out every time. He’s unrepentant to the end in the book, and while that is definitely one way to frame it… fuck, he’s still a *kid,* and for everything I’ve said, he was taught to be the horrible person he was by the adults in his life, was never truly taught the consequences of his own actions, was sent off like a pig for slaughter, and suffers a drawn out & agonizing death as a result. Cato is still a tragedy, shows how the system hurts everyone including the people it favors, and I’m glad the movie gave him that moment of empathy. Plus, I think we can all agree that his actor knocked it out of the park with that performance.

Oh man… I don’t think I can actually play this game (I’m *very* susceptible to horror techniques, and I can tell that the tension in this is ratcheted so high that I’d probably put it down right around that bathroom cutscene and never have the guts to pick it back up) but I might have to buy it just to show the devs my support. I normally save that for more experimental artsy games, but honestly, this looks so good and is apparently so little known? It’s always such a shame when a genuinely excellent work flies completely under the radar. Yeah, I’m probably going to buy this one. Shame that it’s just going to sit in my steam library while I go watch some vods & read the tvtropes page for it instead.

also it’s not like most players can or enjoy playing all the characters in their role, making things a lot more difficult for tank and support players depending on their hero pool

I really dislike how they did the comic book murder re-enactment was in danganronpa it’s this fast pace and exciting moment where everything clicks into place here it felt like a boring lecture with no cool factor to it

At first the intro made me cringe because I thought it was overexaggerated... but nah, this game isn't just regular bad, it's offensive bad. I understand. Also, why is Annika wearing that outfit? I get that she's a maid, but outside of anime, when do you ever see maids dressed like that? Of course, the obvious answer is that she's someone's fetish which is... yikes.

i feel insane. ive been watching this in the background so i hadnt been getting a lot of the visuals so boy. i was in for a Shock when i saw how little some of looks of the characters matched with who they are. harrison sounded like he was in his 30s/40s with a beard. not a twink. isak does NOT sound like hes an emo boy. pulling at my hair

I've been listening to game reviews and stories to go to sleep lately. As soon as the voice acting started for this one, I was like, "Oh, an ad is playing--THIS IS THE GAME???"

(Spoilers for AI The Somnium Files ahead, go play it or watch someone play it before reading) It wasn't until I watched this video that I realized the impact the reveal that Renju and Pewter were in a relationship had on the game. Everyone described Renju as having a new 'lover' but never specified their gender. Everyone in the game, and the player, assumes the lover is a woman, since Renju is assumed straight and has an ex wife. The moment we learn that Pewter was his lover, everything is turned on its head. We learn why he basically did nothing when #89 attacked Date and escaped earlier in the route. If the other routes are played first, we learn why Pewter is so upset and determined to catch the killer. At first it looks like Renju is an 'evil gay' because he asks Pewter to do bad things, but we later learn it was Saito Sejima using Pewter's love for Renju to manipulate him into doing these things. By the end, we see Pewter as a poor sucker who fell for the villains ploy because he had the face of the man he loved. And it is played straight... er... you know what i mean. They aren't gross caricatures, their sexualities are just one small part of a larger, defined character. The most stereotypical thing either of them does is that Pewter reads BL manga, and it's established that Boss does that too. The sequel even has Mizuki be very friendly towards Pewter, a possible nod to the fact that he was someone who loved her dad and made him happy. Kotaro Uchikoshi is the most valid ally.

I've never played Overwatch, but this video was neat. And finding out that not only has a second Canadian character been added in the time since this video was made, but they're from the Maritimes as well was cool. Like, let's goooooo, Atlantic Canadian representation in a game I haven't played and probably never will regardless.

on the topic of symbolism, i wanna bring up another game that handles it fantastically. chants of sennaar. the entire game is about learning the various (fictional) languages that rely heavily on symbology, and you combine multiple symbols to make more complex ones

I completely agree with everything besides the Symmetra point, people now talk about Sym with an air of historical revisionism, but in beta and in many respects (albeit too heavily nerfed) at launch, Sym really was a support in more than just name. originally she gave shield health that lasted on any given hero until they died and needed to be reapplied, I believe in beta it was 75hp at one point (which they must have seen data to suggest was insanely powerful), but by launch they had overcorrected and nerfed it too harshly down to 25hp, it can’t be overstated how powerful permanent health was as a support ability.. health that regenerates after not taking damage and changes crucial breakpoints was an incredibly powerful ability that simply got nerfed too hard before it was ever given a chance.. had it been 50 shields on launch and the community had learnt how to utilise cover, Sym wouldn’t have been seen in the bad light she started to be seen as then-and has been crystallised in the minds of players now. Just because the implementation and balance wasn’t there for Symmetra when she needed it in the support role, doesn’t mean her kit wasn’t specifically designed with support in mind, I do not believe she was ever conceived as anything other than a support in overwatch 1 before launch, her support abilities in photon sheild and teleporter in tandem (rather than as a separate ult choice) would have been more than enough support to her team had she been balanced more fairly. yes on launch she was anaemic, and yes because of that, comparisons to the “support” torb provided in armour makes it look like Sym had no right to be a support, but it really just shows the terrible way Sym was handled by the balance team at the time and how they needed to do more with her as a support rather than have moved her to the dps slot and effectively replaced her with moira.. Overwatch 1 surely could have used a more balanced roster for the respective roles, even if the idea of role lock and a 2,2,2 balance wasn’t there at that time, I just heavily disagree that Symmetra was a defense/dps hero that was thrown into support to bolster that roles heroes, the design philosophy was just different, supports in the eyes of devs weren’t all about healing back then, and dps like Sombra weren’t all about dps.. was it the best for balance? probably not.. but it also allowed/meant that balance mattered less than creative team composition and coordination, it’s really the pro scene, in finding the most optimum, stable, mechanically-favourable compositions that saw the death of that vision for Overwatch and now makes us look back on Symmetra with a critical misunderstanding of what she was designed as, and could have been.

I think... Regarding musicals... it has to be not just that the music advances the plot, but also that the musical expresses the plot. No matter what song you play in Guitar Hero, you advance or not, and any mandatory songs are just that. EBA incorporates music into the action, so it's a really weird iteration, but _is_ a musical. I would also say Rhythm Thief may also be one, because going through the levels is going through the rhythm. It's not that you play the music to beat the level, but that beating the level is beating the music. However, I've seen very little of the game, so I might be misunderstanding it. It's a really tricky and fun thing to think about, I'm genuinely not sure if I'm confident in what I'm saying!

I am subjecting myself to this game for the purpose of documenting it in even greater depth. There are some things you didn't experience even through all your vods. So I will make a list to inform the people. So what happens when you don't build the spa is that when you reach the deadline, the producers give the cast a call and tell them that they have to build the spa through the storm and that they are not allowed back into their rooms until they finish. Everyone grabs stuff from their room before they can't go inside anymore and Harrison has the idea to bring games from the game room and snacks. It then skips from the due date to day 44 where Harrison gives a brief summary of what went on during the skip. Just surface level "it sucked and made us kinda bummed" kinda stuff.

The only good thing that comes out of the current system is that it makes the game free to play, paid for in large part by the rich. It's got it's drawbacks, but I don't necessarily despise this system in the context of Overwatch (in society it sucks.)
