For Educators: Schoolyard Gardening for Wildlife
30 years ago I wanted to plant native plants but information was much more scarce and plants were much more difficult to find. 😐 I did manage to find live oak, a sugarberry, youpon hollies (weeping, regular and dwarf), winged elm, Florida elm, Walter’s viburnum, flatwoods plums which have all done very well. I continue to enjoy these and have redoubled my efforts to add more these past couple of years in addition to trying to remove the invasives on my 4-5 acres. ☹️ It has been a lot of work but I’m loving the results!
Awesome Long eared owls
I just moved back to Fl last year- North west Florida (Pensacola)- sand & ants everywhere. Too hot and too cold. I'd love to figure out how to reduce the Yaupon, Greenbriar & ants. Nothing fancy- I dont have irrigation or lawn other than some centipede grass that I did not plant. As of Nov 2024 the fanp website is being worked on & was no help. I will chk back on that.
Fantastic presentation Maxfield!
We have a lot in Southern Louisiana
Keeping that Sunshine Mimosa in a little clump as drawn (19:00 ) would be impossible, imho, unless it has a steel or concrete border that goes down 24"! Also, if in Central or North FL, that mimosa area will be full of weeds in the winter. Anyway, not the best choice for that use or spot in my experience. Otherwise, EXCELLENT information!
My goal is to complete all 518+ trails! This is a great informational presentation. Thank you for creating and sharing!
Im in Kissimmee, for the first time I saw 2. Since all the construction going on and ranch land being taken. I wonder if they are being pushed closer to downtown. That's where I'm at.. I'm also on the the border of Lake Tohopeglia. Let me know if I can help with your research.
💩🤡🤡
On identification, Since some birds may wander , and may not be singing , it might help to be able to visually distinguish them from easterns. The image at the beginning looks like an eastern , how much visual overlap do they share? And what variability is there in the phenotype? Can a conclusive id be made from a photo?
Peter ever divulge how much fossil fuel he used?
That is definitely the dark side of his story. Gives parts of his presentation a bit of an unpleasant aftertaste („I went to Svalbard purely because I disliked the gray blob on my ebird map“ Yikes!). Of course, one could argue that his story has generated publicity in favor of birds and bird conservation which might offset parts of his negative impact on the planet. Who knows what the net result of his life is…
Bird names , should be written in stone , not rewritten based on ones political stance because the point is to connect with older data , google searches and communicate in general . Erasing history doesnt help birds or harm them . Audubon went around blasting the birds with a shotgun so that name is about as inappropriate as one can get. This name change thing is misguided to the nth degree. Nobody is going to recreate the confederacy because of Scotts oriole. The process is about pushing agendas which have nothing to do with birding . Changing the name of a Louisiana to Tricolor heron also does nothing to improve communication or identification since nobody has a problem recognizing birds with eponymous names anyway. People do have problems when some self important committee decides to start changing things around like designating Pluto , not a planet anymore. Its difficult to talk about and divisive because its a bad thing to do. So stop it .
I'm in western NY and i have a lot of them
There amazing for many reasons i agree........ but what's them special is that there the only bird that gets thrust or power from both strokes of there wings!!!!!....and when you see the vibrant colors on them... that's trapped air pockets in there feathers reflecting the uv rays from the 🌞!!!! Its crazy
Thank you Dr. Erich Marzolf for this amazing and informative presentation! I am a member of the Orange Audubon Society, but was unable to attend the meeting for the live lecture. All the material presented was easy to understand, and you have a great sense of humor! I've taken a boat tour of Lake Apopka, from the dock of Oakland Nature Preserve, during NatureFest. The lake was beautiful! I'm a birder, and I've driven the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive quite a few times, since moving to Oviedo, Florida. Believe it or not, my Panama Amazon, named Freedom the Parrot, comes along with me. I have over 26,000 wildlife videos on Karen Marts UA-cam, filmed over the course of 10 years. (I lived in Hilton Head Island, SC for 34 years. I was a volunteer monitor for The Sea Pines Bluebird Project for a decade.) I am in awe of the birds of prey, wading birds, songbirds, and waterfowl. I've also filmed up to 39 alligators during 3 hours of birding. Congratulations to you, and all of your associates for caring about Lake Apopka and the North Shore. The fact that fish are thriving, manatees are showing up, and the bird life is abundant is a testament to your hard work! Have a great evening, Karen Marts and Freedom the Parrot
Great SHC background!
Beautiful birds.Highly informative video
Thank you for this very informative presentation. Excellent. I observe them on NYC beaches every year, and try to record the bands and then send to the AMOY Working Group as resightings. Yes, they are highly site faithful, and very territorial. Another birder last summer observed a pair killing other AMOY chicks. Question: how do you confirm a "pair"? I would guess by just seeing 2 AMOYs together (stationary) apart from others? These are beautiful shorebirds (antics and noise welcomed), and a beach without them is just not the same.
Fantastic information. So knowledgeable. Thank you.
Just loved this presentation! Can't wait to go out with you this fall!
❤❤❤❤❤
I love them they are behind my house every summer and I hear them a lot if I look in the afternoon I can see them in the muskrat runs
Very interesting!
I choked on my food when he mentioned Michael Jackson touching his daughters. Good Lord. The 9/11 story was truly incredible.
Just started the video and... WHAT
@@StellarLimpkin I thought the above comment was a joke. I could see no way how Michael Jackson or 9/11 would feature in this presentation. 😂 But alas, they did.
I like to incorporate native plants into my landscape here in Tampa. Also, I never use pesticides or fertilizer in my yard in order to preserve our waterways.
Excellent information! Thank you for all that you do to get the word out and get the momentum going for changing the culture
Maple street natives is closed permanently now 😢 but Native Butterfly Flowers is close to where Maple Street was and they have an amazing selection of native plants.
Sir, did you mention Ahinga in India? I think Ahinga is seen in USA. What we see here is Darter
The scientific genus name of an Oriental Darter is Anhinga though. So I guess it‘s fair to call it that.
I only use eBird on my laptop, because unfortunately the Android app demands that you have location turned on. I wish they would let you manually set your location in the app the way you do on the web site.
I just saw a female Orchard Oriole in Gainesville a week or so ago, eating berries in the Carolina Holly tree in front of my townhouse. I put it into eBird, and a message popped up saying how it was a rarity in this area for this time of year and asking me to post corroborative evidence if I have any, which I don't. Now I'm on the lookout for it, hoping to see it again to try to get a picture.
I get chipping sparrows in my yard...but so hard to take pics...last winter i notice this in Ebird..got flagged and tbey email me to provide evidence 😂😂... i hoping they visit this year and get pics to send to ebird ...i amin orlando. ❤❤
50 50 now
One of the most interesting bird presentations. A very interesting life. Lucky man.
Wow, what an amazing man and an amazing life. I throughly enjoyed and was inspired by this presentation
I thank all the photographers who took the excellent Limpkin photos I borrowed for this presentation! - Dana Bryan
going to listen to this while birding this morning 🌄!
"Promosm"
I ripped up my whole pointless lawn this year after moving to this house and planted all natives. I hate lawns!
Craig Watson is an incredible source of birding knowledge.

Ugh- skunk vine exploded in my area! It’s popping up everywhere and strangling everything in its path.
When I first started a wildlife garden, I purchased and propagated firebush because I read how great it is for hummingbirds and zebra longwings. It wasn’t until they were well established that I learned there is native and non-native kinds. Not sure how to proceed. From a wildlife perspective, are those okay, or do I need to rip them out and start over?
The commentator needs to GO, dreadful.
Great job.
