  • Orange Audubon Society's Education Coordinator explains how to make the City Nature Challenge a fun science activity.
Observe and record wildlife in your yard, on campuses, in parks and green spaces across Orange County from April 26 to April 29, 2024!
Help document nature of our urban areas and local preserves.
Help Orange County improve our standings in the competition with other areas for most participants. And have your questions on what is this plant, bug or other organism answered!
    To participate:
    1) Download the free iNaturalist app from wherever you download apps on your phone.
    2) Create your iNaturalist account, which will be visible both on your phone and on your computer.
    3) Practice making and submitting your observations of plants, birds, bugs - even if you don't know what the organism is, submit the photo (or sound recording) and members of the iNaturalist community will identify it.
You can take photos directly with your phone, from the Observe tab, and submit immediately, or take photos with a better camera and submit later from your computer. If your phone or camera is set for GPS tracking, the locations of your observations will be automatically recorded but otherwise record your location. Your observations are contributing to science!
    4) Before the last weekend in April, join our project, city-nature-challenge-2024-orange-county
    www.inaturalis....
From April 26 to April 29, sign into your iNaturalist account and use the app to take pictures of wildlife. If you share your observations to iNaturalist, they will go right into the project.
Starting Monday, April 30th, the iNaturalist judges will shepherd the identification of all the observations. Results will be announced one week later.
This fun competition to document nature in Orange County is sponsored by Orange Audubon, The Nature Conservancy, the Tarflower Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society, City of Orlando, Orange County, and other entities.
It's a great activity for children and college students. Will you help spread the word?
This competition, now international, was started by the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Thousands of cities and counties are now participating. www.citynature...
