L322 Range Rover 4.4 TDV8 - Turbo failure or just a disconnected inlet hose?
This video is a quick update for all those who left supportive comments on my last video.
Having the Range Rover completely undrivable isn't great, especially as I'm planning a trip to the Italian Alps later this year.
The saying "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst" seems to sum up the L322 ownership experience so far.
Thanks for your continued support and L322 camaraderie!

Range Rover L322 TDV8 - Last drive?

This may have been my last drive in the L322 4.4 TDV8 which would be a real shame considering how nice it is to drive and what I've spent on it in the last 12 months. You really should take a look at this if you haven't changed the propshaft on your L322. The central bearing is amazingly suspended by what can be best described as a washing machine drum type rubber seal. And rubber seals only last so long. This one has done 111,000 miles and the central bearing support was very nearly exhausted. This was only picked up by the chap (Ian Bodsworth) who did a tr...

I knew my DSuper 5 was very likely to need new rear bump stops. They are probably the age of the car. If your car does not have these fitted, it should. I also upset my rear sphere so took the opportunity to drive back to the 2024 Citroen D rally and buy a couple of replacements which I fitted the same evening.

EHN-99 .. . go up the Alps with that .. . thank me later.
@@kevinabalo funny you mention fuel. I was lying in bed this morning thinking about UK diesel in the alps and remembering how an almost brand new Peugeot 306 D Turbo I had refused to start one early morning in a ski resort as it still had UK diesel in it. Probably not formulated for the colder temperatures. I’ll make sure to fill up closer to the mountains and look at the EHN99. What do you use it in?
@@Woodyrvf750 I've got a 4.4 TDV8, same as yours. EHN-99 works out cheaper and better than Premium diesel. I would consider it as rocket fuel for the car. Just don't spill any anywhere, the smell takes ages to disappear.
@@kevinabalo good to know. What does it smell like? Rotten eggs?
@@Woodyrvf750 No, it has a chemical smell 10 times stronger than paint. I spilled some carelessly in the basement, and it took weeks to go away. I never fill up without it though. I havent the words to describe just how good it is, but the claims made by the manufacturer are pretty accurate.

Great news Woody. I think with a bit of age we can all be allowed to blow the odd hose from time to time? Safe journeying to the Alps
@@jamesa5980 thank-you. Completed a very comfortable 120 mile round trip last night with a few sections of “progressive driving”, as the advanced institute of motorists say.

Thanks. I'm a member of the FullFatRR and have used many fantastic posts on there to sort some of my car's problems. Blower motor (GaryRR), aux belts are two that spring to mind. We all know that UA-cam is just a more current version of the Forum but with added drama. Or not.. She is running well. Just off for a 120 miler to blow out the exhaust system.
It will smoke a fair bit now mate, it's been overfuelling badly without that turbo hose connected, take give it a good run and when it's properly up to temperature (oil as well as water), give it a good clear out, it'll be just fine.
Great advice, thanks. I’ve got a 120 mile round trip tomorrow evening with some steady motorway sections so hopefully it will have a chance to get a good clear out.
@@Woodyrvf750 Use Commandshift to hold the lower gears and get the revs up and work the turbos, a bit of "spirited driving" joining a dual carriageway a couple of times will clear it out nicely. Also a treat for the prolific foglight users as they'll be able to justify them being on for once. I had a similar thing with one of the donut rubbers on mine that I didn't seat properly, took me a while to find it as it was a smaller leak which meant mine was pretty bad the first couple of times I opened it up. 👍 on the quick fix. Check all the other hose clamps as well as there is 1.5 bar of boost in the intake when you accelerate hard. I run mine on V-power and it smells better as well as feeling smoother at low revs and has less diesel ‘clatter’. No more power or mpg but worth the extra cost for that extra bit of refinement.

How Can the Gearbox possibly make the Engine Smoke out its Exhausts ? I Would Like to Know how that is at all possible ? As its a completely separate Thing that has Nothing to do With the Running of the Engine ? Is it Blue Smoke/Black Smoke /White Smoke ?
@@Pete68T thanks for your comment. I’d recently had the gearbox megaflushed and was concerned that as my GAP IID tool didn’t recognise the 8 speed transmission there was some software / ECU related error causing something else to malfunction.
As others have said, smoke doesn’t indicate gearbox issues; I’m guessing a split or collapsed turbo air intake. If it’s the upper hoses, that’s a very easy fix for you to do yourself. Replace them with silicon hoses.
Now come on. Your not backing out now. Its only uneconomical to repair when you get someone else to do it. Document your pain, link up with other l322 youtubers. And get that beauty back on the road.

try a different code reader, only in Worcester if you want us to pop up have a look. Smoke, is a concern, doubt its gearbox, more likely engine related.
@@tuningemporium Thanks for the kind offer. I’ll see how I get on.
Woody, the gearbox missing message is normal and happens on all 4.4 tdv8s. This fault is nothing to do with the gearbox, there is no way any gearbox fault will cause exhaust smoke. I suspect intake leak, this will cause exhaust smoke as the fuel mixture will be off. What is the mileage on the car? Turbo failure is unlikely but possible. Best get the car to the garage and have it smoke tested for leaks and go from there with it. I wouldn't panic yet but be prepared for the worst. As you say spending another 5 or 6k on this car, it starts to get rediculous and is why people tend to avoid range rovers. You end up digging a big financial hole because you have already spent thousands which will be wasted if you don't repair it.
@@AdamH108TA I’m desperately hoping it will be a low cost fix. How can a vehicle this good to drive (when it works) be so temperamental? I doubt many L322s will get to reach ‘classic’ status. The owners will have lost the will to live and probably be allowed to put “L322 ownership anxiety” as cause of death. God help the poor soul who’s left the Range Rover in the Will.
@Woodyrvf750 totally, you have invested a lot of time and money into this car to be rewarded with this nightmare. For me the cars are great, I own the l405 now 2016. But it does get to the point when the worrying outweighs the pleasure and you think what's the point. It's not normal to be thankful every time you make a journey successfully although this is what range rover ownership can end up like.
@@adamhutton3121 did you have the L322 4.4 before your current one? Which do you prefer? I see some posts on Facebook about people having gone to the L405 only to hanker after the L322.
@@Woodyrvf750 Yes had the same car as yours, the l405 is 5% better to drive, doesnt have the body rust problems but they have other expensive problems such as leaking ACE pipes and cracked steering knuckles. If i was you i would stick with what you have, its great.
@ thanks, very useful. Maybe when I become a UA-cam millionaire I may replace the L322 with a Rolls Royce Cullinan. That should be a significant step up but may take some time considering my zero ££ UA-cam earnings so far! All good fun though. 😀
Turbos
@@Carenuthiast yes, quite possible / probable..
Unlikley on a 4.4. Almost a certainty on the 3.6........
To my mind that sounds more like breather hose or something in the air intake system leaking. Not sure about this but had it on a Disco where a hose collapsed and restricted the air intake. Also I did not fit the air filter hose properly on my A6 3.0 TDI when changing the filter and it smoked badly until I put it back in properly. I am no specialist, just a tinkerer at home with some farm machinery experience over the years too. I cannot think of anything transmission related that would cause engine to run rough like that and go into restricted performance. The mega flush issues are usually just about dislodged dirt particles I think which result in loss of a gear etc. it does not ever effect the engine running to my understanding. Good luck!
@@benfel9403 thank-you. This advice is all very welcome with experience pointing to air intake issue.
@@Woodyrvf750 I wait with fingers crossed. If you are ever stumped, I am near Cirencester and there is a great man down here called Cam Tech. I know not local to you but if it stumps you it might be the trip is worth it. He is on the FFRR as Camtech Craig.
@ brilliant, thank-you.
Smoke + restricted performance suggests intake air leak and highly unlikley to be geabox related. Have you looked under the bonnet to see if any hoses have come undone . BTW the GAP IID tool doesn't read the gearbox on these and it's normal to report it as 6 speed.
@@johngriffin641 thank-you for your suggestion and also GAP IID knowledge. I haven’t checked under the bonnet yet but will do later.
Oh no! Well hopefully nothing to expensive! And as John said above, it doesn't sound as gearbox! I have not experienced boost leak (yet), so i don't really know, but shouldn't that throw a fault code? But smoke would point at a fuel/air mismatch... Turbo would also bee in the mix, I guess! Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Let us know how it goes!

Most likely split manifold or boost pipe ballooning on the inside
Hey Woody, Just discovered your videos this evening and thoroughly enjoying them, very informative. I’m just in the process of doing some research on the L332 (as I really fancy a 4.4v8 facelift model) and have been a bit shocked at the cost of ownership you’ve experience in the first year or so…. My question is were you aware that you’d have to do some work on the car you bought? I’m assuming you did some research yourself before buying to make sure you got a decent one, so was all that a surprise? Thanks
@@fraser.5362 firstly, thanks for your kind comments. Really glad you are finding the videos of my ownership experience and maintenance useful. Secondly, I didn’t do enough research. I bought a car that had an annual service, with evidence, which is pretty unusual. The only real shock has been the high pressure fuel pump. The rest is bits wearing out on a 12 year old car. I was aware of a restricted performance issue when I bought it which was caused by an aging vacuum pipe. Buy the best you can afford.. 🙏
@ thanks for the update. It’s the wear and tear of a 12 yr old car that is beginning to concern me. I can look around and get one that has been looked after but I’m not able to do the kind of work you do so it’d need to go to a specialist garage and that could end up costing a lot of money… Keep up the good work though, it’s definitely helping me…👍
@ you’re right. There are still 4.4 TDV8s out there with full main dealer service histories. People say you pay a premium for these but in hindsight, they are probably worth it! It’s a good time to buy a well maintained example.
@@Woodyrvf750 yep, they do seem great value for the money… So I think all I can do is find a very well maintained one, check the history, have an AA check done and take a good warranty out before buying. Then get it serviced and all the fluids changed and run it over a decent distance frequently to keep the EGR and DPF valves working as normal. Then keep my fingers crossed 🤞
@ seems sensible. Maybe a check over by a specialist rather than AA? Expect the oil cooler to have been changed. If not, it will need doing. Have a good look at the fluid in the coolant expansion tank. It should be pink and the tank should be clear, not a black stained mess like mine was..
I also bought a GKN that arrived this past Friday and will be installing it tomorrow or the day after on my 4.2 Supercharged. Most replace just the bearing but LR states it’s not a serviceable part, plus the other joints as shown wear out with time. So why not do the entire job once in 15 years instead of twice in 2 years when the bearing goes again due to improper balance? So great video!
@@stop_lying_bro thanks, glad you found the video useful.
@ Welcome and thank you. I got the new prop shaft in today. The bolts by my rear diff was an absolute pain and super tight, but those from the transfer case were almost too easy. I ended up having to drop the exhaust from the Center and rear hangers because there was zero room between the pipes to move the ratchet and one bolt stripped 😅
@@stop_lying_bro well done for getting it done. On mine the bolts to the transfer box and rear differential were about the same tightness. Both were looser than I was expecting. Maybe yours has been off before? How was the play in your end joints?
@@Woodyrvf750 I’m thinking as well that it was probably off at some point. The end joints we’re pretty loose but the rubber on the Center bearing was not that bad but you can hear the bearing grinding
@@stop_lying_bro that’s interesting. Suggests a previous owner has taken the less expensive route before.
Are you wearing a grands worth of new Michelins?
@@robinkirke1702 the tyres are all the correct Michelins and from 2018 on this car so all good. Apart from the crucial passenger front which has worn badly due to the toe in having not been set. I suspect after a new steering rack was fitted. I measured the toe in to be 15mm. It should be between 2 & 4mm! The spare tyre is unused, but I’d hate to have to fit it looks at least 30 years old.

Woody, what's the noise level like in your DS at 80kph+..? Cheers,
@@paulrallyfan417 it’s actually very good. Wind noise from poorly fitting front windows is the first area to investigate. When the windows are fully up the bottom of the glass should move towards the car to make good contact with the rubber. Engine mounts probably make a difference too. I’m going to change mine soon.
Doing mine at the moment, what a bad design, the front retention bolt has a nice little area in the thread for water to collect and seize it in (mine had been chewed up by a previous owner so was a pig to remove) then the ball joint itself has that narrow section on top for water to get into and seize that in too, I'll definitely be trying the method you demonstrated. I may also be kind to the next person to do a replacement and try and seal those water traps with grease or wax when I'm done.
@@bobthebarsteward a big dollop of grease would make all the difference come next time..
@@Woodyrvf750 yes, grease is the word
@@bobthebarsteward now you are just showing your age..
ohhhhh I was just about to buy those tyres..... hmmm.
@@benfel9403 I won’t be buying them again! Dangerous in standing water. Especially if you’re going round a corner, you get to meet oncoming traffic or the ditch. The choice isn’t up to you. Apparently the Verde is better but not available in the recommended size for my car.
@@Woodyrvf750 thanks for replying and sharing. Much appreciated.
Nice to see a clear and realistic account on how to work on the vehicle, thank you.
@@rover12tourer89 thanks for your kind comment. I hope you found it useful. I started making these videos mainly to help me explain things more clearly. Practice makes perfect.
This was a high quality repair using critical thinking and applying forces in a sensible way and not just hitting things with a hammer. The jack holding the extension and using the spanner to turn it was a great idea and stops the torx rounding out. Removing the cap off the ball joint and giving yourself a clear area to hammer works great and avoid risk of the damaging the hub and CV when the chisel slips. This video is the perfect example of working smart not hard, well done Woody.
You have made my day. Thank-you. I saw one video where a chap used an electric concrete breaker to get this job done. But he did get lots of views.. and made me determined to research a better way to go about it. 👍
@@Woodyrvf750 No problem, i have done this job on several L322 and knows whats involved. I have just got a british racing green L405 and have recently replaced all 4 arms on that, had to order the JLR ball joint spliiter. Totally impossible without it!
Does your 405 have the same engine as your 322? Which do you prefer?
Good video this Woody! I'm about to do one on a car I have in stock - I was wondering if it would be possible to replace without removing the exhaust. You have answered my question! Also I think you are local to me - I recognise some of the roads you have driven on! all the best - James @fullfat4x4
Dare not look at mine…..
@@johngriffin641 if you’re not brave enough to look at it.. I certainly wouldn’t try jacking the rear end up. 😬
Jobs like this, a cheap battery ratchet speeds things up exponentially.
That's a very good idea. And something I don't yet have. Any recommendations?
Miserable around the front, but needs must. Did you have to vac-bleed the system afterwards?
@@kevinabalo the cooling system? No, but there is a slightly weird procedure where I think you have to put the fan on full, with full heat and then once it starts to blow hot you rev the engine to 3000 revs and shut it off. It’s brutal! You should probably check the exact procedure as this is from my foggy memory banks.
Quick question - if anyone knows the answer? I Just bought a 1970 DS ID - For some reason, I cannot open the boot - the boot opening button pushes in OK - the rear offside section of the boot rises slightly - but I cannot open the boot? Did a search on UA-cam and cannot find any videos.
@@cheaperukbills774 I’ve just been to take a look at mine. My only suggestion at this stage is to push down as hard as possible on the button. I’ll upload a video of my mechanism and share it with you so you can see how it operates.
@@Woodyrvf750 That is so kind of you woody - I have a couple of DS books - sadly they do not include the boot locking system
@@cheaperukbills774 has it been repainted? It’s very likely just a bit of adjustment needed. But you do need to get it open first.

@@Woodyrvf750 I have an invoice stating that it has had a repainting job yes. However, that was some time ago....
That’s a bloody good price for a GKN one 😊
I know! That’s exactly what I thought. The old one was showing some free play so my replacement of the whole unit was a little bit more justified.
The bearing can be replaced quite easily and its only 30-40 quid. No need to replace the whole prop shaft.
Good to know. I chose to do the whole prop shaft mainly because it was the simplest, if not the least expensive option. I was also quite pleased to find a GKN OEM shaft for less than 300 quid.
Per the Land Rover Shop Guide, it specifically states the prop shaft isn’t serviceable and should be replaced as whole. For the exact same reason shown in the video. Other joints will have excessive play even when the bearing is replaced. It’s a cheap fix for now but eventually it will need doing unfortunately.
