If you haven't done the pumpkin cutting yet, I would recommend you doing it for them rather than letting them do it. All it takes is one kid with ill intent or mischievousness, and you have a major problem. Best of luck! I quit years ago, if you hit year 3 and feel like it isn't getting better, there is no shame in switching careers!
Hiiii I’m a teacher candidate in a masters program at WGU. I am transitioning from a non-classroom role. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your journey with us. You have been an integral part of my own journey and a great inspiration and motivation to go after my dreams. Wishing you a restful weekend. I’m so happy to see you in your own classroom
For Benchmark Advance...the BEST TPT seller I've found is Toluca Rivers - Markers and Minions. She has products for kindergarten-6th grade, and she just came out with the best Benchmark slides I've used with the curriculum. They are super teacher and student-friendly. She's known as the queen of Benchmark
Thank you for sharing this resource! Do you teach benchmark for the entire ELA block?
@ms.trinh.teaches We're required to, but I supplement grammar and writing. I honestly don't know anyone who doesn't supplement with the program, at least a little bit. I'll keep the same skills for that week, but I'll add my own anchor charts, descriptions, and activities, as needed. Moffatt Girls seller on TPT has some of the most developmentally appropriate writing and grammar units I've seen for primary grades. I teach 4th grade now, but when I taught 1st, I did the same. For 1st grade phonics, I supplemented with UFLI. It's amazing and just what the kids need. I stuck with the scope and sequence of UFLI, not Benchmark. Benchmark asked way too much of my students with phonics. A good TPT option for phonics is Daydreaming About Data. She truly understands the science of reading. One of my favorite resources to use for small groups with firsties was from Farmer Loves Phonics (she has an incredible small group template for each ability that I would plug in lessons to. I ended up with the highest scores on my team with this). My favorite seller to get decodables from was Droppin' Knowledge with Heidi. They were true decodables that only contained phonics skills students had been exposed to and one new skill per week. For the comprehension lessons, I use Toluca Rivers' close reading companions from TPT. They're a game changer in my classroom and shorten the lessons to just the essentials. She has them for 1st-6th grade. Also, her new editable Benchmark slides have cut my planning time in half. Another thing I loved with my first graders is phonics worksheets from Miss Giraffe on TPT. I bought them for each spelling skill, and my students loved them. Each activity has like 3 practice pages by level. I would keep them in students' center folders and switch them out each week. I would put worksheets of skills they had already learned, which helped with spiral review. I would put 2 phonics and 2 writing worksheets in their folders each week. Students would complete one a day, turn them in, and they would then go to either word work center (I used Dropping Knowledge with Heidi and Daydreaming About Data resources for activities), listen to reading (on Epic or Storyline Online), Computer Station (iReady), or writing station (I used Miss Giraffe and Moffatt Girls writing activities). The first half of the school year, I did NOT have a read to self center. Students couldn't handle it since they were still learning lots of foundational reading skills. Many of them would just flip through a picture book and be done in ten seconds. I made read to self an early finisher, and it improved behaviors significantly. Last thing - if you want to see what food teaching looks like at the first grade level, follow/subscribe to Mrs. Call's Campers (Instagram, TikTok, UA-cam). Seriously - go look back at her videos. So much that I've learned about working with first graders (and teaching in general) I've learned from her.
You need to find a work/life balance. It's not just work work work. I get it because im similar.
Spending more time on hobbies after work now! Still feel some guilt with not being prepared, but I get through the days.
We use benchmark in florida and I HATE IT. I used it during student teaching it's not good!! It's repetitive (you read the same story multiple times for a whole week) I found best results with looking at the standard and finding resources myself like on tpt. I'm also a first year and thinking about going back to school for school psychology
I love TPT, but I’ve found there is so many teacher AI tools that can help create resources. It has saved me so much time and helped with differentiation. 😊
My school focuses on standards each month and uses other materials to teach it. I'm only using Benchmark to plan for phonics instruction as of right now.
When it comes to first graders, just remember that many of them are dignified kindergarteners at the beginning of the year, and repetition and consistency are important. One strategy for teaching main idea and supporting details is to give the students the main idea, and then they find the sentences that support it. They have to ask themselves, "Does this sentence help to support the main idea?", and they learn to read carefully over time. Try to spend several days over one specific verb tense rather than try to do all three. You can also design a chart that lists types of verbs. For example, write the word physical verbs and list those words that use the body(run, kick, jump, throw, scratch, touch, luck, etc.). Make another chart and write the words Mental Verbs and draw a picture of a brain. Tell your students that mental verbs are those that do not use the arms, legs, and feet. Write the words think, wonder, love, like, wish, hope and others. This will help to build their vocabulary and see if you can list them in some type of alphabetical order. Remember to set boundaries so that you have time to decompress after the day. Take care.
These are really good ideas! I always have trouble breaking things down so that I'm not overloading them with information.
Well Julie, 1. A Teacher's Work is never done just like a student's work is never done ....... until the end of the school year. 2. Anchor Charts are a student's best reminder and resource. 3. With the token Board and prizes, it's not necessarily about the reward it is about giving the student something to look forward to and not dread because I live with autism and I was once one of those students and when I dread things I go off task too much less get passive or start wishing my life away versus living in the moment. It's just a part of the deal. 4. Your new shoes look good on you. Keep handling it like a champ !! - Dwight
Anchor charts have been so helpful. I just wish there was enough room to post all of them up.
I'm a first year teacher too and I totally relate to feeling anxious if everything isn't planned. I have to force myself to leave work in my classroom 😅
How are you able to do this? I have a general schedule for the week, but still stay back to prep for the next day.
@ms.trinh.teaches The school I teach at operates on a block schedule so I see my students every other day. If I plan far enough ahead I can relax, but things are constantly changing so more often than not I'm staying behind to make sure my lesson plans are still accurate 😋
Do student teachers do the lesson instead of the actual teachers?
You observe first, then slowly take over. The mentor teachers are there to prepare you and give feedback throughout the whole transition!
I know it’s stressful but your students are great first graders can be a handful which is totally understandable
Hi, If you don’t mind, could you please make a video about your interview answers to inspire us😊Thank you! Good luck with your little hearts!
Hey Esosa Saw some of your videos. They were super interesting. Not sure if you interested about possibly helping you take a bit of the creation load off, if it's something you need. Im and editor btw. So I was thinking I can do some videos free & If you like it we can discuss Rates & Scope of work. Let me know if you want to. Best regards Izudin
Do you have an assistant or do you have them all day by yourself?
I'm teaching on my own the entire day!
I teach first grade, I don’t teach main idea and key details until later in the year. I focus on phonemic awareness and phonics, writing cvc words, letter practice, and labeling. The passage you had sounds and letter combinations first grade students don’t know. That may contribute to the behaviors you’re seeing in class. I give my first graders 2 folders. One for language arts and one for math.
My school has a monthly schedule for focus standards that we need to follow. We do this in combination with teaching phonics.
One thing I learned from teaching, don't stay at school too long when the school day ends....you will never get it all done and you deserve to have time to yourself. Every class will always have students at very different levels. You are doing great and every day gets better as you are learning more and more on how to be a full time first grade teacher.
If I don't stay back to plan/prep, I feel like I'm not doing enough to help my students or myself grow. How do you navigate this?
I subed for First Grade yesterday before I start my long term sub job with 7th and 8th graders. First Grade is SO HARD! You're doing amazing :)
I think middle school is just as hard, but in it's own way! Good luck with your long term sub position ♥
The first year teaching is always the hardest! Also, you will never get EVERYTHING done as a teacher. You just have to make priorities and let some things go. You are doing a fantastic job...teaching is HARD! Have more incentives besides the bling-bling so that more students can have more things to work towards.
So much thought goes into each day and it's over before you know it! Then the cycle repeats 😩 I have whole class, table, and individual incentives that get them going haha. Thank you for all the kind words and advice.
I loved this video!! I have no idea how it was recommended to me, as I'm not a teacher, but it was super engaging and interesting. Also, once a month I volunteer to teach 8th graders for a half day. I was never taught how to do it, I don't have a teaching degree at all, etc, and it's SO hard! They are crazy/wild and don't pay attention and I feel like they are bored and I don't know how to get them engaged. It was really inspiring and helpful to see that a real teacher struggles with the same thing and to see how you handle it. Thanks for this awesome content and for working so hard to teach these kids. They will appreciate it one day and I appreciate it now!! ❤
Aww thank you so much!! Teachers are thrown into the classroom and expected to figure it all out. It's amazing how so many teachers I know are masters at the craft.
I'm graduating from my teaching program next month and I'm so scared for my first-year teaching.
Every step has been terrifying, but we will somehow make it through each day. Wishing you the best!!
Glad to see you’re doing better :). I’ve noticed that brain breaks like Go Noodle are best in the am to get their energy up, and brain breaks like calming stretch or quiz quiz trade helps them be engaged but not overly energetic in the pm😊 You’re doing great and keep inspiring me to finish my degree🌞
It's been a rollercoaster of emotions! This video was actually from September, but I barely had time to edit it now haha. I'll definitely add in those calming brain breaks after the pump up ones. Thank you for the idea ☺
I'm on year 8, and I STILL have times where I discover more tasks that need to get done (ones I didn't anticipate). The longer you teach (and in the same position), the more you'll anticipate all of those tasks (right now, every day, you're doing something new for the very first time, so it's understandable that it's not working like clockwork). Prioritizing teaching tasks is a learning process. I've had to embrace that I'll never have it mastered. Have you considered making a plan for your plan time - specific tasks you do on different days of the week, or even specific tasks you do at the beginning/end of a unit/quarter? While I never feel like I'm fully "done" with my to-do list, this has been a gamechanger.
I've been told to make to-do lists and leave once the tasks are completed, but I haven't done it and never considered to plan daily ones. I'll try it out soon! Thanks for that idea!!
Well Julie, There are some things that actual classroom teaching experiences will teach you that a teacher's course or a book never will and among those things are what works and what doesn't work for your students. And still, you keep working with them. Kids don't have the freedom of choice that adults do nonetheless they keep trying to cope with adjusting between home and school every weekday and maybe some of them to see you even when you are being pressed on what to teach them and how to teach them by somebody else even when it may or may not align with the students' thought processes or interests or lifestyles. And still, you keep working with them. There are so many things that keep you the teachers from seeing the children as themselves everyday And still, you keep working with them. It does not matter if they love it or shove it if you know what I mean keep on enduring and weathering everything and keep working with them and when the last day of school year comes and they see you still standing there they will love you for it in the end. - Dwight
I needed to hear this. It's been so hard managing everything these past few months. As always, thank you for your support.
@@ms.trinh.teaches You're welcome Julie. When I was a young autistic student there were like one or two occasions when I got overwhelmed and I got emotional in the classroom and again a lot of it was about things that I had to deal with every school day that I had no choice but to deal with and it just became too much for me to the point where I just got tired of fighting it off everyday and all just to turn out being the ONLY one of three boys that graduated and marched with His Sr. Class in High School in the end. - Dwight
As a WGU student in the Elementary Education BA program, I thrive from watching your videos. Whenever I'm stressed and feel like I can't do the work, your videos of coming out not the other side after PCE, Student Teaching, to your first year is what keeps me going! Keep up the good work, you're amazing!! <33
Aww thank you so much!! I didn't see many videos from teachers who came from WGU, so I wanted to put my own journey out there. Keep pushing through your program and wishing you the best ♥
I'm going to enroll in WGU are you student teaching from the elementary education degree:)?
Yes! I was getting my master's during that time. Wishing you the best in your teaching journey!!
It breaks my heart to hear how you go from being so confident and enthusiastic and then break down and second-guess yourself and how you become so discouraged. Teaching is absolutley one of the most difficult jobs in the world because you are working in so many areas of a child's life with so many variables. Be kind to yourself. Focus less on what youdid not do today, and more onwhat you achieved!! I have mentored first year and new teachers over the years and this is the main advise I always give: don't try to make every lesson of every day the most amazing 5 star lesson - aim for 1 INCREDIBLE lesson per day and then good-adequate lessons for the rest of the day (I know this feels off but as long as you are getting through what needs to be done you are doing well). Allow time to breathe and grow in confidence. Children thrive in quiet, calm and gentle environments - focus on Happy and then you will all be happy. But honestly it sounds as if you are doing GREAT. Believe it or not what you are going through is every teacher everywhere in the world and working in every grade.
As a first year first grade teacher, i get you. It is really hard, cause you have to build everything. You don’t already have a routine. You don’t already have a time line for what to teach and when. You don’t already have activities created. It’s a lot of work to do, but the passion keeps me going. I hope it does for you too 💗
May i ask which state this is?
California!
Rodriguez William Johnson Kenneth Garcia Barbara
I love first grade! My first few weeks I focus on routines, procedures and exceptions. Model, practice, repeat. Everything needs to be explicitly taught! I sound like a broken record, but it needs to be done. We practice everything, from how we leave our seats to go to the carpet (stand up, push in chair, walk to carpet, sit (either criss cross, mountain or mermaid/merman). You are doing great :)
“i havent even taught them yet” lmaoooo 😭 kids are so cutee
High School teacher here, I can't imagine teaching small children. No way I could do that.
this video encourages me so much as someone going into teaching next year . thank you so much for your vulnerability ❤
General advice: do not wear low cut tops. I don't mean to be personal, but elementary teaching involves a lot of leaning and a top that seems "cute" may reveal way too much when you are leaning all the time. Also, most elementary kids require MASSIVE amounts of repetition before they learn. What many don't realize is that at least half of your kids will be below average statistically. Compound that with lack of parental support for learning at home and with little English outside of school, and you can expect to repeat endlessly. It becomes second nature. Also, use the parts of your training that actually WORK. Most of the junk you learned in teacher training was someone's theory that got them a masters or doctorate and doesn't actually work. Serious advice here: FIND AN OLDER TEACHER WITH A GOOD REPUTATION. Hang on her every word. Your real teacher training begins with HER. Toss 99% of the junk you learned in college.
One more thing...don't do the hair reward. KEEP PERSONAL DISTANCE. I know they are little kids, but you need to establish respect. Because you are young and seem gentle, you have to work harder to build authority. The hair reward thing is too personal. Don't do that.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing your Teacher experience.
First year teacher here and girl, I cried with you. It is extremely hard.
Hey I started teaching in first grade 9 years ago. Your feelings are valid. You are learning and it takes time to find your grove….be kind to yourself.
Do you have a copy of "everything you need done for DT" with the check boxes? I think my biggest problem is organizing the tasks and best order to attack them.
DM me on ig for the checklist!
I wouldn't be surprised if children work slower than others ! There is a thing called SEND. Please be patient with this group of students Kids can't sit that long to learn , it's no wonder you were pulling the work out of them and trying to keep their attention. Introduce plenty of movement breaks . Break down information into chunks ... And I would write your instructions for children to follow so they tick off as they do it . Your expectations are very high Broken hearted for the poor children who had to miss doing art to copy other childrens work because they couldn't actually do the work through no fault of their own ( you said some have english as a second language). Your not helping these kids but tearing their confidence up as learners. How awful they must of felt inside! Gosh . Please take all above as constructive criticism😮

Hi, thanks for sharing and being so transparent about your progress. I just finished my first school year with 3K and I also learned I was pregnant in January. I felt like I didn’t have my stuff together literally until around February as well so it takes time. Give yourself grace.
Hey you are doing great. Don't get down. Reset and keep going. You are amazing!
Hey, please don’t cry:(. I totally understand you. As an educator myself, I will be brutally honest with you, I get scared before I go into the classroom. But you teach as you do👍🏻❤️. I’m sure you are amazing. Teaching is an art, teach what makes you comfortable your way. Throughout time, everything will be comfortable and soon you will be feeling great teaching ❤️.
As a first year teacher how often do you plan per week for lessons? I’m currently student teaching and I feel like I have to plan everyday based on how fast or slow the students catch onto the content.
Hey I was wondering does your school not offer esl classes for the two bilingual kids? I remember in my school kids who just came from another country would have esl classes separate from regular ones and come to a regular class for math or science!
I’m a former teacher and I just want to say that you are doing an amazing job by showing up. Give yourself a lot of grace. I used the buddy system in my class to help my dual language learners. Not only does it help them but it also really teaches children to build relationships within their peers, collaboration and so much more. Sending you hug
I’m here to offer encouragement!! I’m a first year first grade teacher.l and I felt your emotions in this video. The same happened to me last Friday. But it gets BETTER!! As teachers I am learning that we will have our good days and bad days. And when the bad days happened we have to be able to shake it off. Wishing you all the best this school year.
I’m a first year teacher in kinder. It’s hard, the first week is hard. Be strict, keep your expectations high, and don’t let them get away with not paying attention. They will continue to do that if you let them do that now. However, they are little & they are getting back into the swing of things.
Aww it will get better . ❤
I don't think the school day should be so long for elementary. Many adults have trouble concentrating 7-9 hours, we cant expect a 6 year old to stay focused and engaged either.
I had to pause the video when you started crying. I have been a classroom teacher for six years paused for two and I am returning now as a sub. One thing I would mention if you have any control over your schedule is to do all core subjects before lunch if you need to split math (mini lesson, new lesson seat work -exit ticket before lunch, and small group-after lunch). My small groups consisted of technology-school math program, seat work, partner work (math games from curriculum). Writing is always one of those pulling teeth things but mini lesson, send them off to write (put on quiet music). I agree students will act differently when others come in the room. I would call them out on it not specifically by name but be honest about what you saw and what you expect next time also give compliments to those who were behaving/showing how much they know. I would always use the phrase" show people how smart you really are because you are sooooo smart." You got this!
@PreciousBB18 So true! Good advice ☝☝☝
@@teacherof20 Thank you.
