Analyzing "Poison" (from Hazbin Hotel)
Analyzing the music theory of "Poison" from Hazbin Hotel, written by Sam Haft & Andrew Underberg, performed by Blake Roman as Angel Dust. Hazbin Hotel is an animated series on Amazon Prime, featuring Broadway stars including Erika Henningsen, Alex Brightman, Jeremy Jordan, Daphne Rubin-Vega, James Monroe Iglehart, and more. Trigger warning, of course.

ABOUT THE CHANNEL:
Hi! My name is Mateo, I'm a professional musical theatre composer, splitting my time between Toronto & NYC right now.
On Thursdays on this channel, I post a video analyzing the music theory behind some of the great Broadway musicals of all time! In the past, I've analyzed works by Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, Pasek & Paul, Jeanine Tesori, and Stephen Schwartz, just to name a few.
On Sundays on this channel, I post a video update of the progress I'm making on my writing projects, so you can follow along with the process as I create new musicals from scratch.
On Tuesdays on this channel, I post a video reacting to a performance by a star of musical theatre, discussing what makes them so amazing. I recently recorded a video reacting to Aaron Tveit being cast in Sweeney Todd, despite the fact that he's not a baritone.

    George Firth it is!!! Anyone Can Whistle (the song) is a jewel of a song. Perfect in its simplicity. Not a Day Goes By (from Merrily) is hands down my favourite Sondheim. Matteo that is splendid arrangement. Most of my fave Sondheim songs are from his “flops”- Anyone Can Whistle, Merrily, Follies etc.

    The Barbican is RSC home in London. So the audience was a Shakespeare audience, not a musical theatre one . I knew nothing about Hugo’s novel. At the end of the first act the audience went crazy. Ill never forget. One of the greatest musical experiences of my life. Perfect play, perfect company, perfect environment. I remember my scales this way: tone, tone , semitone, tone, tone tone , semitone. We actually hear Eponine’s On My Own in One Day More which closes act 1 as a kind of thematic leitmotif. At the end of the musical we experience perfect harmonic resolution. In much the same way as Wagner does in the closing bars of Tristan und Isolde. Four hours of continually shifting chromaticism is resolved on that final B. You are a natural educator. You don’t “dumb” things down, you’re incredibly charismatic and your passion is palpable . Great job👍

    I saw Patti’s Evita here in Sydney. She flew into finish the Sydney run. The Australian Evita shot her voice . I was 17 . I remember thinking this is what REAL TALENT LOOKS AND SOUNDS LIKE. Also heard her Fantine in the original Les Miserables in 1985 (fourth preview) at the Barbican in London. PATTI LUPONE IS A ROCK STAR!!!!!

    “The ones who follows the rules” is slashingly ironic. BUT you bring up an interesting point up about going up,on G sharp. This song shifts between major and minor constantly.

    Finally, an individual who is equipped with a musical vocabulary . Someone who can discuss transposition and who KNOWS THE SCORE! Who knows that vibrato is not a voice type but a device strategically deployed by singers to heighten parts of the text giving the song expressive depth . In other words an, intelligent, trained musician . This guy is REALLY GOOD 👍

    I didn't know about the concept of borrowing a note from a different scale until watching your videos, so I've always mentally registered that part as a temporary key modulation of some sort (which isn't quite far off, but not entirely accurate). And it's fascinating to read the sheet music after your explanation. The "dream" parts of the lyrics and the "wake" parts of the lyrics, where he goes back and forth on, definitely lines up with the borrowed note / back to original note in scale part in the music. The last part is quite interesting too. I am going to over-read into it and say, if the Phantom is willing, his strong will and determination will bring the chaos back into order as long as he can hold on to it.

    Since being cast as bakers wife in my school musical I’ve been doing as much research as possible and this was probably one of the most useful videos yet!! Sometimes all people see is the fact that she cheated on her husband and not the fact that she came out of it better (plus she was literally in the wrong story so I don’t know if she could have stopped it even if she tried) and it’s not that cheating is not wrong, but it’s not the point of this story, it’s a narrative to make her character stronger and to realize that she’s grateful for what she worked long and hard to achieve.

    • @MusicTheatreTheory
      @MusicTheatreTheory 18 днів тому

      Exactly... there is so much nuance in every conversation about this song! It's dangerous to just label a character as "a cheater" and then refuse to engage with the humanity underneath. Good for you for doing this kind of research and character work, I'm sure you're going to be amazing as the Baker's Wife!

    While it is true that Aaron Tveit is not a baritone, but a really high tenor, Josh Groban is not a baritone either. He's a tenor, too, even though not quite as high one as Tveit. Consequently, with his somewhat darker and meatier voice, he manages better in that low tessitura.

    OK, all that theory stuff at the beginning of how it's written in 3 chords means nothing to me... WTF is this song talking about? What is never enough? And then I figured it out.. It's a Love Song that the character of Jenny Lind is singing to Barnum for bringing her to America and making her an international star.. And if you saw the movie you could see she was developing feelings for him. Which he rejected in favor of his wife.. So All the Applause, All the spotlights, All the fortune means nothing if I don't have to you to share it with. It's right there at the beginning of the song... "Take my hand, Will you share this with me? 'Cause darling, without you All the shine of a thousand spotlights All the stars we steal from the night sky Will never be enough, for me, without you For the purpose of my post, I took out all the lyrics in the middle in order to funnel it down to it's basic meaning. My only critique is the lyrics "Without You" should have been at the end of the chorus because it represents the resolution to the sentiment that it's "Never Enough". If you don't like that suggestion, then it could also work if it was simply the very last two words sung at the end of the song. When Loren Allred whispers in a falsetto "For Me", instead just substitute that one and only time...."without you" And before I get attacked, this comment is based on my own experience. I was in show business 20 years as a professional singer and sometimes songwriter. Now I haven't written a ton of songs, so this is just my opinion based on my personal sense of composition. Btw.. I LOVE this song, and I am now a HUGE Loren Allred fan. Also I just found out this movie was 7 years ago

    Suggestion: When describing notes, like high low f# or high f# please consider using numbers instead, like "f#3 to "f#5". If you do, please go with the better standard Middle C = C4. (If you use middle C = C3 [bad], you end up with negative notes at the low end of the piano, and this will warp the space-time continuum, worse than playing Piano Man on a Thursday night at 8pm.)
