  • Ryan Gosling at the Oscars, singing "I'm Just Ken" as Ken is a quintessential musical theatre moment!! This song may have lost the Oscar for Best Original Song to "What Was I Made For" by Billie Eilish & Finneas, but the movie Barbie wouldn't be the same without this song. The writers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt have achieved an amazing work of musical theater in my opinion!
The movie Barbie was released in 2023, starring Margot Robbie, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, and Michael Cera, among others, directed by Greta Gerwig.

    ABOUT THE CHANNEL:
Hi! My name is Mateo, I'm a professional musical theatre composer, splitting my time between Toronto & NYC right now.
Every Thursday on this channel, I post a video analyzing the music theory behind some of the great Broadway musicals of all time! In the past, I've analyzed works by Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, Pasek & Paul, Jeanine Tesori, and Stephen Schwartz, just to name a few. I also recently recorded a video reacting to Aaron Tveit being cast in Sweeney Todd, despite the fact that he's not a baritone.
Every Sunday on this channel, I post a video update of the progress I'm making on my writing projects, so you can follow along with the process as I create new musicals from scratch.
And every Tuesday on this channel, I post a video reacting to a performance by a star of musical theatre, discussing what makes them so amazing.
If this sounds like your vibe, don't forget to subscribe! ✨✨✨

They only rehearsed for a week and only had one run-through on stage, and the 4 movie-Kens didn’t fly in until the general rehearsal the day before. Ryan Gosling called and asked them if they would come 3 days before. Brilliant how it all came together! He planned the whole thing, the Marilyn Monroe tribute, to have Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig and America Ferrara placed in the front row (they were seated elsewhere during the rest of the show) to pay tribute to them, his big sister Mandi by his side whose head he puts the hat on (she’s almost always by his side wherever he has premieres or award shows), she’s been his date to the Oscars for years, as has his mother (he and his partner Eva Mendes never do public stuff together), going to his friend and 3-time co-star Emma Stone (last was in La La Land) with the mic, getting La La Land choreographer Mandy Moore on board, planned all the camera shots and got Slash and Wolfgang van Halen to come as well. Just a brilliant, talented, kind, class act guy with a great quirky sense of humour. Yes, I’m a big fan in case you were wondering. 😄

Gosling had a band like 14 years ago, in some of his tracks like "My Body's a Zombie For You" he kinda sounds like elvis, you can hear that he is a talented singer. Also such a nice "LA LA LAND" reunion moment with Emma towards the end. Nice analysis!

I’m convinced. Thank you. I have to say that I’ve avoided theory beyond suspensions and resolutions because my roommate in freshman year was a theory and composition major and t&c and sight singing/ear training were the washout courses in the music school. I was poly sci and musically illiterate but our room was constantly filled with panic-stricken horn players hoping to make the cut. It was aversion therapy over three academic quarters. Fifty years later, you make your course sound tempting.

Your arguement about the last key change... the note you propose that it should go to is the note Slash was playing.

Someone has been drinking way too much Barbie koolaid. Where to begin. Barbie is the most overhyped movie of 2023. Gosling was 20 years too old to play the part and not near good looking enough. You needed an unknown drop dead gorgeous 21 year old model actor to play Ken. Same thing for Barbie. One thing we learned from this is Gosling definitely is NOT a singer. Why is he wearing pink? Pink is Barbie's color. And there is nothing special about the song itself. I was a theatre major in college and I have been a musical theatre geek since the age of 5. To compare this moment to a Broadway show is absurd. Now that the Oscars are over we can leave Barbie in the past. Just watched the movie...no comment as I do not have that much time.

He's wearing pink because they staged the number as an homage to the number 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend', from the movie Gentleman Prefer Blondes.
The sequence in the movie was an homage to another classic, Singing in the Rain.

It’s ok man, you didn’t like the movie, that’s ok, you don’t have to like everything.
I encourage you to be a bit more open-minded in the future though. If something emotionally connects with this many people, there must be some merit in it, even if you can’t immediately see it from your perspective.
