The first snow in the garden #142
The first snow has arrived and with it a lot of chaos. We got sick earlier this month, so most of November was spent on the couch. By the time, I was getting better, snow had arrived--and we found out we'd need to move home and garden.

Last winter preparations in the garden #141
Переглядів 621Місяць тому
The end of October brought dark, wet, but still very warm days. I had a plan for next year's garden, so I brought cardboard into the garden to start new beds with. I'd already prepared most of the beds for winter, made most of the new beds. Three beds were left to start. I'll likely never get to plant these beds. But I didn't know that yet, so I worked diligently. DONATE: rootsandcalluses.com/s...

    Hi Kate. I had to move last year due to our home becoming uninhabitable due to mould. My landleach did nothing, of course. It was the most distressing experience I've ever gone through. I remember having to retreat into the less mouldy rooms, close off doors with gaffa tape, and battle with windows open in the winter and air purifiers going constantly. Eventually, I had to leave everything behind, and couch surf, until I could find somewhere new to live. Then everything having to be washed with antifungals on unpacking in the new place. It broke my heart moving from my home and community (and garden!) of 25 years, but I am grateful to be now in a place that is dry and clean. I sincerely wish you the same. Landlords should be prosecuted for failing to repair and make habitable, but they get away with it. My heart goes out to you.

      I had a wonderful landlady once. She did her very best with everyone. But other than her, all of our landlords have ranged from bad to worse. I hate that exploitation of renters is a business model. I am glad you are safe and dry now. We are working as quickly as we can to get out of here.

    Hi Kate! I remember the first time I watched a video by you,you were installing the new roof on the shed. I was impressed with your agility in getting to the top and how nice it turned out. You've gotten so much done in the amount of time since then. When you no longer use this garden, will you be able to take the greenhouse, water barrels, etc with you for your next garden? I haven't given up anything. I have been in snow barefoot just the other day. But there are reasons to put on shoes. Not being able to wash my feet after walking through the garden if I have to meet someone afterward, for example. I also wore boots today because I had to be fast. Barefoot and fast don't work well.

    What is a steam juicer? Did I hear that right? Wow are you moving house and garden? Hope u have found something great Viel Glück 🍀

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses Місяць тому

      I had no clue steam juicer were a thing until I accidentally bought one used thinking it was a canner. It's a pot with two things on top: a basket for whatever you want to juice and a juice collector below. You put water in the bottom, it steams through your fruit, and the now tasty liquid collects. It destroys most of the nutrients, so we mostly use it to get the last bits out of things. For example, when I made syrups, I would then throw the redcurrants into the steam juicer after to get some juice in addition. Yes, we will have to move house, and that unfortunately means moving garden. We have no clue yet what's next, just that we need to move out within the next weeks. We are packing boxes, so far without a known destination. It's a whole mess. But we will figure it out :)

    So happy to see you had a new video out today! I have a crazy question for you. The water barrels that are around the garden plots,how do you get them filled? Do you run a hose or do you get that much rain to fill them without eaves troughs? I know from other videos that you do get a lot of rain,just didn't think it would be enough to fill a barrel on its own. I feel so bad for you, your hubby and Pepper that your house is in that bad of a state from mold. Thats absolutely terrible. My fingers and toes are crossed for you. It'll all turn out, I just hope its soon. Oh,and thank your husband for the drone shots. I love the view! 🙂

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses Місяць тому

      I edited the next one today, so I only need to narrate and then you'll get to see another one :) The water barrels are all currently full. I collect water from the garden house and green house, then pump it with an electric pump. I think I explained the pump in a recent video about doubling my water storage. I got a lot of water from the former garden neighbor when he gave me all his barrels. But I could very likely get them filled with just my two roofs over winter if they were not already full. It amazes me how much water a single garden house roof or greenhouse roof collects. And yes, we get a lot of rain.

I still have some coffee grounds to mix into the compost and will be picking up some manure from a friend who has farm animals this Wednesday. Hi Kate. I have to ask you a question about growing garlic. This past spring, I over watered our 2023 fall planted garlic and 4 beds rotted.😢 I had no idea months of rain were coming and lasted until the last week of June. I read an article where they stated that they don't start watering their garlic until they start to poke through the ground. How do you gauge it? I was still able to plant a spring planting, but the harvest just wasn't the same as what we would have gotten from the huge bulbs that rotted. 🙂

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses Місяць тому

      I wouldn't water until spring at all, then only during dry spells. Same as with potatoes, there aren't enough roots yet to take up the water, so rotting is a real risk. This year, I didn't water the garlic and onions at all. By the time I would have started, the rains had started. I water plants by feel, touch, and look. I will try to include how I check in the videos :)

    Hi Kate. Thank you for speaking your truth. I am also scared, angry, disgusted. Our NZ government is 'deruglating' everything, dismantling social change that was hard won, over decades. I cannot believe that we all watch while people die horribly, including 75 children a day, in Gaza. The disinformation about what happened in Amsterdam is awful. Grgh. Thank goodness for gardens, for having people to talk to. I have only one. My husband. My silence deafens me. I'm so sorry for how difficult it is in Germany. We cannot let them win. I hoped and pray that he did not make it back into office. What is so crazy is they will not let people that are in jail or felons vote but they will let him run for president. We are going to have four more years of bad luck and him claiming, he done something while in office Donald Trump and JD Vance will always be out for self. And the way he talks down on so many people veterans special need women he just don’t care as long as he’s getting what he wants and he’s very racist and it definitely bothers me how he talk about special needs people, I have an autistic son and I always wondered How do you let someone that pout about what they want make decisions in our world. It is definitely time to get rid of that popular vote because if that would’ve been gone, he would not have Been voted into office. I really truly hope that him going to court still will help us get him out of office.

      I fear he will take office, then pardon himself for his crimes along with his "friends" :( I really hope something happens soon that makes people realize we need to work together, that a tiny portion of people is using all the resources, exploiting the planet, and making us fight against each other, so we don't see what's happening. Capitalism really is a cult and the 1% are the cult leaders. Great, I sound like a conspiracy loon now.

You are doing well with getting outside and working in the garden and being in nature. I find I need to be outside in the garden and with my animals as well as getting out to enjoy nature- walks in the woods, putting my feet in creeks, and just exploring the beautiful things in the world and trying to block out all the ugly, negative things. That is so helpful when we stress about things we cannot control. Keep up the good work outdoors, hopefully it will help in some way.

      I want to hide in the garden so badly. It would help a lot right now. But I am down with some kind of flu (we think it's period flu, so allergy to my own menstrual cycle...) and have been stuck on the couch for days now. I need a garden break. I'd even ignore the perpetual twilight we've had for a week. I'll get my hands dirty again soon ;) Stay strong! Stay safe :)

    I watch your videos and enjoy them very much and will continue to watch and enjoy. I am one of those who voted for Trump. I'm afraid what you were/are watching and hearing is probably not the full truth; media today does not paint the full picture; I've stopped watching our local media because they are so biased. We have large community of Amish people in several of our states that showed up in the horse and buggies to vote for Trump. They usually do not show up to vote at all, they actually helped win the state of Pennsylvania. Also, another large voting population was Latino's and black men. The black culture (men) continually voiced their dissapointment in the current regime. Vice President Kamala is not capable of running our country, she was picked during Biden's campaign because she is a woman and of color (when she wants to be). Let's talk about immigration. We are a country founded because of immigrants, my grandparent's migrated here from Poland but they entered "legally"! I have no problem with immigrants coming into our country but not they way it is happening. Did you know that the gangs from Venezuela have taken over parts of Chicago, Illinois? It is so bad that the people who live there are rooting for the gangs that have lived there forever! Now that is scary! We are housing illegal immigrants in hotels for free and giving them $750 a month while our war veterans are sleeping on the streets. And don't get me started on transgender surgeries. They are giving children hormone blockers before they are old enough to make their own decisions; our brains are not fully developed until at least the age of 25, if then they want to go forward with this decision, go for it, but I also do not want my tax dollars to pay for this, pay for it on your own dime. AND Kamala Harris was going to let prisoners get these surgeries - WHAT this is insane! To me this screams Nazi Germany back in WWII when Hilter was experimenting on people's bodies. There are SO MANY people who went through these surgeries only to want to de-transition. Once they want to de-transition these doctor's will not help them, they are left on their own. So very sad! Now to climate change, yes we have a problem, but the majority of the problem is in China and India, we in the US are in the single digits of creating this problem. Which ever way our election had turned out I would have excepted it because we still have one of the best democratic systems in the world - in my opinion. Keep up the good work on your videos I really do enjoy them.

    We.just had our first killing frost last night. Sadly my lettuces are dead unharvested. We were busy yesterday and I forgot I wanted to pull them. I will leave it as ground cover/nutrients since it's mostly mush now. I am also trying to over winter Swiss Chard. Most of my garden has gone to sleep but do need to turn my compost. Worried about my garlic too. It has been so warm this fall. We usually have at least 1 plowable snow by now. That grass is crazy!! My daughter in law has some like that. Looks like a previous owner used it as a ground cover. I also had some really crazy looking carrots. Be well.from Canada 🇨🇦

      We've had a mild frost twice but nothing more. The sun hasn't been out in over a week with a perpetual twilight and temperatures a couple degrees to warm. As soon as I am no longer sick on the couch, I will add more mulch next to the garlic bed, ready for colder temperatures. And turn those composts... Yeah, I definitely need to turn the composts ;) The grass was used to feed rabbits, I believe. Fast growing with a fast spread sounded good to the man who sowed it.
