Budget smackdown Me versus Buzz @BuzzRetirementGarage
Переглядів 21314 днів тому
Check out how Buzz and his wife live on social security only and he is 64! Versus me with a job at 67. Doing this comparison I discovered I have four not three debt payments, my house, my apartment building (not included in this discussion), a credit card, and just revealed to me, a solar panel lease. When all these get paid off and I don’t invest, I can bring my expenses from $10367.41 down to...
Paying down debt, my life’s purpose at 67.

I have decided to drain my no interest checking accounts to pay down my 8.75% apartment building mortgage so I can afford to retire. Less than $100k to go. I will have about $18k left in the accounts but $12k already spent on other things like house mortgage, apartment repairs and insurance, three financial killers. No longer even trying to save money for an Aptera. #retirement #debt #myhair #m...

Let me guess, SunRun? I have not liked the Net Metering program from day one. We are also in SoCal and cost analysis has consistently shown solar is not beneficial for us. I routinely yell at the solar reps who knock on our door. Yep, that is a problem with resale and the technology changes and buyers don't want to be saddled with old equipment.

My company was solar world. I wish I had the edison bills prior to 2021 when my wife passed and were using a lot more electricity to see if I was saving money. I think we were because we were using a lot of electricity back then. My wife was using an oxygen concentrator.

I think solar can save you money if you right size the job. But make sure on the lease buy out conditions strike out the …or market value whichever is higher, part of the clause. I think if the provider is legitimate they should agree to their original buyout price (they are going to do fine financially with those terms) and if they don’t, don’t sign.

Interesting story. I’ve never had solar before because when I looked into it I was disgusted by the sleaze. It seemed like they would tell you anything just to get you to sign the contract so that they could collect their commission. Our rates have gone up so much in the past year that I’m probably going to have to reconsider.

10k a month??? whoa!!! No way... I don't make that much working full time plus overtime. Of course I do not live in CA either. All my bills are less than your house payment, since I paid off my house in June. What I struggle with, is whether to sell my house or not. I live in SWFL and on SS I will not be able to afford insurance on my home if I completely retire with no job at all. If I sell, I would have the funds to pay off one big debt, but would have to move to a rural area of another state, which is not appealing. Ideally I would like to sell, pay off that debt, and just move to another home here in this area that does not have the high taxes and a pool to maintain, but that is a unicorn in SWFL. And the insurance is very high no matter where you go in Florida.

Actually that is not necessarily true because if I had no debt (no mortgage, buy out my solar panel lease and no credit card debt) and no investing my monthly burn rate would be $4446 a month which isn’t bad and with a few lifestyle changes like one car, eat less high end beef, and cut back on supplements I am sure I could cut another $500 off so it starts to get more similar to yours. Also I will get passive income from my solar panels. Last year I got a $390 check from Edison.

Very interesting. Just a few years ago my burn rate was over $15k per month. I’m a real estate investor as well and I was making payments on multiple mortgages at the time. I’ve since paid everything off so my burn rate has come down somewhat. It is still much higher than the average retiree mostly due to paying taxes and insurance on multiple properties. It’s hard for you and I to compare ourselves to others because our properties will always skew things higher. I think you will be fine as long as you keep your eyes on the ball and focus in on paying off your debts.

I have much less in bank savings, because I moved my 6-figures out of a "too big to fail" bank to pay down my 2.5% interest rate mortgage with 28 years left. I am completely out of debt, including my mortgage, and without counterparty risk before the next World War, Civil War, and Greater Depression hit hard. Several years ago, I cancelled my last credit card. I pay with cash or with debit card, no checks. I owe nothing and I have positive cash flow above my expenses. For 20+ years, I saved and only paid cash to buy my used cars. My only real estate worries are skyrocketing insurance and property taxes; they're coming sooner than you think. *"I may be wrong, but I am never in doubt." -- Dan Peña -- QLA*

Hadn't considered this at all, really enjoyed the video, subbed. At 32, near 33... maybe I have time. I remember being at an employment agency when I was 23 and the advisor went around the room asking everyone what they wanted to achieve in life, I answered "to be good at one thing" - maybe I should update that to "be very good at two things". Something else to consider re. retirement though is how much more liesure time you'll have to advance whatever choose to focus on. Right now I find it incredibly frustrating that I have to put a lid on so much naturally present energy I have for things I enjoy and which self-perpetuate the energy I have for them in favour of working a job which I'm good at but find disproportionately taxing mentally and physically in order to hopefully guarantee a roof over my head as years go by 😪 sadly my situation isn't unusual among those of us that don't have a lot to count on in way generationally conferred security - in my current day-to-day experience those who have that advantage seem to be very preoccupied with travel for the purpose of 'at least say[ing] that I've travelled', which I find weird to be motivated by unless the rationale really is that its a status thing, but then qualifying it with the 'at least' (I've heard this same thing said verbatim between different people) suggests some sort of low expectation in the 'all things considered' scope of life which is sort of depressing. Then again, when moneys an obstacle, spending it recreationally like that is tends to inspire anxiety more than anything else which probably skews my whole take on the activity and maybe they're just plain old enjoying themselves how they do and don't labour so much over the words they use to convey themselves as I do making sense of them... but still, maybe put aside aiming for a 10 at travelling - the pastime seems so oversaturated that to be a 10 in it would be financially devastating. Keen to hear more. All the best!

I am retired from STEM and not socializing much at all, but over the course of a couple years, I taught myself to do things on my own comfort level, a level that simply is slower than others. The retirement is the chance to finally enjoy being myself as I am, especially being patient and let things happen naturally.

Here’s a couple of thoughts that you can run the math on, if you haven’t already; You mentioned paying the apartments down to $20k and then pulling from an investment to finish it off. What would happen if you pulled the $20k now and then attacked the balance with aggressive payments? If the rate of return on the investments is higher than the mortgage interest then it seems like it would be better to wait. The thing is though that those interest dollars you are paying are real money that the bank is kind of stealing from you. I don’t know how much you have total in your investments but what if you just took out enough to pay off the apartments in full? Like next week? Sure, I get it, mathematically you might be a little better to leave the investments alone. Think about what happens as you pay things off though, your anxiety and stress level about money declines significantly. Think about what that does for your health. The credit card at zero interest isn’t really moving the needle for you if you pay it off sooner or later. I would probably pay it off sooner for the mental win and to make it easier for me to make sure that I never run the balance up again. Pay your house off last for two reasons, it’s significantly larger, and you can write off the interest on your taxes. As you pay off debt your total monthly expenses will drop significantly and therefore your emergency fund can also be significantly smaller. I’m 59, retired and own residential rentals myself. It is my primary source of income. I have learned from watching other UA-cam retirement videos that you and I just aren’t in the same place as just about all of them. I don’t mean any disrespect to anyone because they have done great themselves but we just aren’t quite in the same place. The difference is just scale. We both have above average monthly income due to the rents but we also have above average expenses. I’m debt free and my expenses are still around $10k a month. It’s just scale. Keep your eye on the ball and you’ll be fine.

@BuzzRetirementGarage This is funny. I went to my local GNC to get some creatine. They were sold out so I went to another Ralphs that sells it and while there I picked up some wild caught salmon for $9 in the discount bin. I will not eat farm raised fish or bottom feeders. I don’t know if this happened while you were growing up but I remember in the early 1960s the dinner table conversation often centered around the high cost of food. I think something like 25% of my dad’s take home pay was used to pay for food and my mom was trying to find ways to stretch that into multiple meals. We were not poor, my father was an aerospace engineer so he made decent money but food was relatively expensive then and housing was cheap about 25% of income. Looking at my budget I am spending about 4.3% of my income on food so it’s relatively cheap really. Your food budget looks reasonable too, well under 20% and you are getting a good mix of meat, starches, veggies and fruits. I wouldn’t worry about it.
