A Quaker in Calais: Irish Quakerism and Collective Aid w/ Paris
In this video, I am joined by Paris, who used his Living Adventurously Grant for Young Quakers to volunteer in Calais, providing tents and non-food items for refugees in Calais. A hotly discussed topic in the media, Paris describes the situation on the ground and how it linked to his Quakerism. He also discusses being brought up Quaker and experiencing Quakerism in Ireland as a young adult.

A Quaker Friendly Guided Meditation
Переглядів 12012 годин тому
In this video, I take some of the ideas I had after reviewing the Hallow App last year to think about what a Quaker Worship app might look like. One of my ideas is focussed on guided meditation with a Quaker slant. NOTE: This is not a meeting for worship and is not intended to replace it, but as an additional helpful tool...perhaps...
Are Quakers Witches?
Переглядів 22419 годин тому
In this Halloween Special, I look at the link between Quakers and witches. I look at the spooky history of Pendle Hill, the link between the Quaker and witches' hats and what paganism, wicca, animism bring to Quakerism. The inspiration for this episode came from the following Quakers Today podcast episode and subsequent article in Friends Journal quakerstoday.podbean.com/e/quakers-witchcraft-an...

In this short video, I delve into the history of Quakers and beards. KEY questions covered: - Did Early Quakers all have sneaky beards when they weren't having their painting done? - Does having a beard make you more radical or wise? - Which Victorian Quaker had the best beard? - Does being a bearded Quaker make you Amish?
Truth - Quaker Testimonies
Переглядів 1992 місяці тому
In this video, I continue looking at the Quaker testimonies. Truth plays a central role in Quakerism, both in our history and how we behave in society today.
Quakerism and the Lord of the Rings

The Beginnings of Quakerism
Переглядів 2843 місяці тому
In this video, the third in the History of Quakerism playlist, we finally begin with looking at the beginnings of Quakerism, up until the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660. Really useful video from Stuart Masters in his Salter Lecture a few years ago helped with this video lots (this is the first of two parts): ua-cam.com/video/lMvFA6L7vKg/v-deo.html Ben Pink Dandelion also looked at the four...

UK and US Quakerism: Similarities and Differences
Thank you for this different approach. There is an interesting transcription error at 14:27, which is also true but more zen like interpretation of what you actually said. Very serendipitous!
That’s funny! Both work I suppose!
@@Quake-It-Up Ah, but the transcription is more interesting. What does it mean to shed happinesss? Does it mean to throw it away, like shed skin, or shed it like light? Does either never increase happiness? Definitely something to meditate on.
"If you want to find a hard, uncomfortable bench to do this, that's fine." ROTFL 😂🎉😅🎉
It’s the only way!
Very nice, thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Not sure your audio has been up to the normal quality on the last couple videos
I agree, trying to fix it but will probably need to buy a new microphone
That was really lovely. Thank you!
Thank you too!
EXCELLENT! Very refreshing. You might consider adding some Buddhist chanting and Tibetan singing bowls. My current situation does not allow me to attend the local Meetings for Worship, so I do the best I can at home. This effort is a big help. Keep it up!
Cool! Glad you liked it! The feedback has been quite positive so far
OMGoodness, you are spoiling us with all the great videos lately! (Me = loving it! 🎉)
More to come!
Wow you are really down on Lincolnshire 😂 Now I want to visit it and see just how dreadful it is 😊
Lincolnshire is aaall fine, it’s Lancashire that’s the problem… 😅
Thank you Friend for another excellent video !
Thank you for watching!!
Wow, this is incredibly timely. I have been a neopagan witch for a little over ten years. I started attending Quaker Meeting this year because I wanted community for my son to grow in.
Spooky one might say 😂 That’s really interesting, how are you finding it? Any similarities?
@@Quake-It-Up I'm not the only pagan there. One of them is an animist and there are a few who are more interested in earth based spirituality. They made sure when I joined that I knew they were liberal Quakers. I didn't really understand what that meant at the time.
A very good friend of mine is a Wiccan Quaker ( I'm a Wiccan/Sufi). She loves the community and completed the training, but did not go through with the full initiation because because she was concerned it would involve swearing an oath and Quakers don't swear oaths. Her teacher was fine with that, she was simply acknowledged as a member of the community.
Oh no, he's talking about me xD
😂
Love this. Just off to get a pointy hat. Tho I'm not sure the beautiful Pendle Hill warrants such anti-Lancashireism 😊
I REGRET NOTHING!
Lol😂
Excellent video once again. I found it to be supportive of preparing myself this morning for first day meeting. Thank you.
Excellent! 🤩
Is there any discussion going on that you’re aware of about animals rights in Quakers community?
A good question - I can't say that I hear too much which is a shame because I think it is a subject that Quakers would be positively disposed to. Many Quakers are vegetarian/vegan for example...
If there is only one God and every Christian follows Christ, why are there so many denominations? How much of your belief is simply made up by some guy in the past?
I understand the arguments against denominations. And I appreciate churches that consider themselves the "one true church" (there are many). But my view is simply this: there are different ways of gathering to worship, of gathering to follow Christ. Some with music, some without. Some with ritual, some without, etc. Just like the earliest churches founded in NT times, each local church had its own unique local flavor, culture, peculiarities -- and challenges. And for those who value diversity, why not diversity in Christ? There's more than one way to praise Him, to worship Him, imho. 🌿
Human interpretation is fallible.
Stor takk for dine fine videoer.
Another episode out so soon..?! You are really cranking them out lately!! 😮 🎉 ❤
I have a bit of a backlog!
@Quake-It-Up Well, you are doing an amazing job at an incredible speed! 👏 Thanks for all you do to make it happen! 🙏🏼
I have been deconstructing a fundamentalist and conservative/liberal confused education and upbringing really thinking these ideas out and finding myself align more and more with Quakers. I went to my first Meeting this week and the meeting of people was warm and inviting and it was funny bc they literally did nothing and sat in silence. They let me barrow George Fox’s Journal from their library and now I have an excuse to go back. 😊
I hope the journey continues to be fruitful! Let me know if you have any questions!
To survive and thrive as an open and loving path of Jesus Christ, Christianity can consider the following steps: 1. Emphasize love and acceptance: Focus on Jesus' message of love, compassion, and acceptance, and welcome all individuals regardless of their background, beliefs, or identity. 2. Promote inclusivity: Encourage diversity and inclusivity within Christian communities, embracing people of all races, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities. 3. Foster dialogue and understanding: Engage in respectful conversations with those from different faiths, beliefs, and perspectives, seeking mutual understanding and common ground. 4. Address social justice: Actively work towards addressing social injustices, such as poverty, inequality, and systemic racism, reflecting Jesus' teachings on compassion and care for the marginalized. 5. Embrace science and reason: Integrate scientific knowledge and reasoning with faith, recognizing that science and religion can complement each other in understanding the world and humanity. 6. Support personal spiritual growth: Encourage individuals to explore their own spiritual journeys and deepen their connection with God, rather than adhering strictly to dogma or doctrine. 7. Emphasize compassion over judgment: Prioritize empathy and understanding over judgment, reflecting Jesus' teachings on forgiveness and mercy. 8. Engage in interfaith dialogue: Build bridges with other religions and belief systems, recognizing shared values and working together towards common goals. 9. Address trauma and abuse: Acknowledge and address instances of trauma and abuse within Christian institutions, prioritizing accountability, healing, and support for survivors. 10. Embody Jesus' teachings: Strive to live out Jesus' teachings in daily life, demonstrating love, kindness, and humility in actions and words. By embracing these steps, Christianity can continue to evolve and thrive as a beacon of love, acceptance, and hope, aligning with Jesus' original message and inspiring positive change in the world.
Love
Thanks!
Love your 5 Quaker hero's. Mine are Harvey Gilman, Adam Curle, Jennifer Kavanagh, Elizabeth Fry and Sheila Hancock.
I really enjoyed this, and there is some great ideas here. I would have appreciated a bit more focus on Jesus as part of the suggestions.
A good point, shall consider this for next year!
Quakerism reminds me of other spiritualism and emotionalism of other religious traditions. You add the Hindu like aspect of G-d within everyone and it’d be easy to lose focus for an assumption of reality to feeling over substance.
Love
🙂🙂
Most hilarious one yet. In the conclusion after you say "you're not even in it for you, you're there for uoholding the meeting..." -- or for upholding a cat! And a big floofy one at that! 😂😅😊 (I usually just listen to the audio without watching the video. I'm so glad i re-listened to this one and just happened to see that glorious moment! 🙌)
Haha! I like it when they cohost!
@Quake-It-Up haha. Yes. They do A great job of making their presence known! 👏 😆 🙃
Thank you for this one. I enjoyed it very much. I attend two conservative/traditional meetings. One has Bibles on each bench. At the other one, most people bring their own Bibles to meeting. In both meetings, 8/10 or maybe even 9/10 of the vocal ministry include some reading of -- or at least referencing of a biblical passage. It is always clear among them that the Bible is very important and should be used as a guide -- yet it is not equal with God, Christ, or Spirit -- but it helps us to know Him and to grow in our faith and practice. 🙏🏼 🕊 🌿
Informative.
"Do not be so quick to deal out death and judgement, even the wisest cannot see all ends"
Another great quakerly quote from the Mines! 🤣
There are quite a few at my local Meeting (including myself) with beards, but I don't think the ratio is any more than in the general non-Quaker population.
What do you mean at about 16 minutes, that surely no Quaker believes that god lives within them? I thought that was the whole point. I thought the light was just another way to describe what we mean by "god." So on my march to "convincement" I have a serious setback here. After studying intensely these past couple months since I discovered the local meeting, about the history, the different splits of thought among Quakers, about Advices & Queries, listening to about 100 Quaker Speak videos, attending every First Day meeting, after meeting talks, even doing an outreach event with a few Friends - and - and this is the big one - actually making cupcakes for after meeting snacks one week - NOW I find I got it ALL wrong?? Crap, I knew there was something weird. I am going back to just being a garden-variety athiest who knows the difference between right and wrong and am trying to do right in the world. That worked fine the first 50 years of my "spiritual" life. I guess why worry about it. I really do not fit in anywhere, which is fine if that is what it is.
You should do a video about why you choose to not join your local meeting. You seem "convinced" to me. I figure membership would follow that. Or is there too high a demand, like you have to serve on committees or something? It would be interesting to hear.
The reason why you are so good at these videos is because you thoroughly know your subject, live your subject, and above all, are excited about your subject. It's written all over your face. I do believe your inner light is showing. : )
I love your professional thought-provoking videos. In this one, towards the end you say, when one sits in silence but perhaps hears a siren, one can let the mind wander to that scenario and wish them well, or when one hears children, one's thoughts can be led to think nice thoughts about them. That's not for me. I hear a siren, I notice it and let it go. I hear a child, I notice that and let it go. I want to think about that as much as I care to think about my hands on my lap - I don't, they are just there. I don't have much time here to accomplish what I hope for, and so I take that hour or so to sit in expectant listening for that deep well of truth and love that can support me and inspire me. I tiwll come from within, not outside. Later on in my day I have time to ponder sirens and kids should I choose to. : )
It's true!
Thanks again for a great video.
❤🙏🏼

Greetings from Indiana, from the lovely USA Midwest. As a person new to Quakerism, these 4 videos on Advices and Queries, like everything I have to recently learned, are helping tremendously to lead me to "convincement." What an apropos term! One does not "convert" but simply becomes convinced they have been Quakers their whole lives and just didn't know it. Heck, I thought I was the only one who thought like this. : )
I always try to employ Question #2 from Byron Katie's "The Work" (consisting of 4 questions and a turn-around ) as a process of inquiry and discovering truth. #2 - "Can you really know that it's true?" Or "Can you absolutely know that it's true?" (In many/most cases we cannot "absolutely" know our thoughts to be true.)
Watching this brought to mind a Sikh prayer that begins with the line: "There is One Source of all creation; Truth is His Name." (Translation)
"I wasn't dropping no eaves sir!"
Capital's Q and F. With thanks, journaling thoughts and to what end, good advice.
Excellent commentary. Thank you. In the US (where I live) we have a thing called the Pledge of Alligiance. I don't know if you Brits have a similar thing. Should I as a Quaker politely refuse to recite this pledge. I don't believe that my country is always right or that I would always follow what all other Americans seem to follow. And to affirm this before God is impossible for me. The term GOD needs clarification. I think I know what my answer would be, but some comment from you would be appreciated.
I believe you can answer your own question. Speak the truth, if your issue is "allegiance to the flag", "under God", or it's origins, say as such. If your objection is that you are a Quaker, say as such. If you are not a Quaker, you shouldn't say you are. Assuming you are in school, there should not be any interference with your decision to participate or not participate in the usually daily ritual of the Pledge of Allegiance.
I didn't know I was a Quaker until the day I attended a silent meeting for the first time.
Thank you for this. Quaker witness has been a blessing in my life, even though I belong to another religious tradition. Bayard Rustin has always been an example to me, among many others.
