You Need People in Your Business
Do you sometimes avoid asking for help because you don’t want people in your business? I get it. People can be messy, but I don’t think they intend to be.
I’m back with an important message- we NEED folks in our business. We also need to be willing and able to assist friends and loved ones when they need emotional support. If you haven’t figured it out yet, we can't do it all by ourselves. One of the first questions that we clinical psychologists ask new clients is “who do you rely on when you need support?”. We ask because having others in our corner is critical to psychological fortitude.

URGENT: Don't Cancel Your Conservative Family | Dr. Rheeda Walker

Everywhere in the world, families struggle with communication. In the U.S., in the middle of a global pandemic and a FIERCE election cycle, it is not surprising that folks have disowned certain family members while "avoiding" others with whom they may disagree. Sometimes, we assume that our family members think the same way we do and it can be jarring to find out when values simply don't line u...

Thank you so much for this! I’m earning my undergrad at a very small school who is not equipped to manage research experience opportunities; so, despite being in the latter half of my junior year, I only just recently learned about research experience and its requirement to get into PhD programs, and I’m frantically trying to learn as much as I can about it all so that I can get in as much research as I can before I graduate. How exactly do you find research opportunities? And how many would be considered “above and beyond”? Or what is an average amount of research experience that accepted PhD students received prior to submitting their applications?

Hi Dr Walker, I'm 63 and sort of retired. I'm thinking of maybe starting a 2nd career. My original career was as a Silicon Valley software engineer but I'm burned out on that. I noticed about myself that when talking to friends about their problems, I try to delve into and really understand what's going on so that I can help them. It is natural for me to really probe them in order to come up with solutions. Do you think at my age, I could have a 2nd career? It's not so much about the money for me since I'm somewhat stable right now (although extra cash never hurts). Also, I have a PhD in computer science. Do I need to do another dissertation in order to get a PhD in psychology or would grad work + training be enough? (I'm leaning towards PsyD) I would definitely appreciate hearing your point of view!

Yikes... and then their are the psychologist on the planet who don't research that it's impossible to choke and kill someone from behind the neck, and thus treat her patient for a trauma that never happened based on a lie... in essence we have to be able to diagnose the situation accurately to know what we are treating.. I'm sure this will unfortunately offend you bu5 my issue with psychologist is they are under deep illusions themselves 🤷🏽‍♀️ Thank you for this video though i certainly agree with the need to break the stigma that prioritizing your mental health means you are crazy... although it definitely means you are acknowledging you have a mental illness potentially and thats ok because many of us are walking undiagnosed including psychologist ❤ lol. However healing is a gift to self and everyone around you...

Educated, yes! Articulate again yes! Enlightened, no! Racist counselor yes! Counselors and educators’s are supposed to meet people where they are in life and use their abilities to help people get to where they want or need to be. Preaching separatism in a country divided is only creating hatred and chaos. Shame on you! Divisive propaganda to create more fractures in a country that needs unity.Good counselors know everyone has a story or life experiences. Had you applied this to Asians, Latinos, and yes white or even more politically correct Caucasian Americans, you would be a credit to your profession. The black population does not own the racism card. It is shared through many cultures and subgroups of minorities and majorities. We can’t change the past but those willing to come to the table to change the future in a positive humanitarian light has the psychological and mental fortitude that deserves recognition. You are a discredit to the real counseling professionals that willingly get their hands dirty and hearts hurt helping their fellow human brothers and sisters out. You are compounding the problem and creating civil unrest by giving a reverse racism threats on good hard working Americans that work their butts off to make America a better place. People serve in the military being a band of brothers and sisters protecting our nation from foreign and domestic threats. Counseling 101: hurting people hurt people. Doesn’t matter the color. Work from there…I choose not to be an extremist from the left or right wing. My colleagues and I choose to teach and counsel people based on the the Good Samaritan principle of doing what is morally and ethically right. I prefer to help people to succeed in life by engaging their minds and giving them the tools they need to becoming better contributing members of society without focusing on skin color. Barack Obama was not voted in because he was black or a racist. No he was voted into office because he had a vision that included everyone and a commitment to make change in a professional capacity based from his life experiences. You can learn from him. As an educator you don’t have time or energy to come to the table to help people understand racism?? You are playing the part of victim and not part of the solution. You are smart, savvy, and articulate. Everyone is suffering since the pandemic and becoming a domestic threat to innocent people by your rhetoric is only making the problems bigger than they have to be. Stop cancelling other people that can use your message just because of their skin color.

I have found the professors to be extremely arrogant and simply don't respond to inquiries for volunteering in their research labs. So it is a Catch-22. You want candidates with research experience in your specific field of study, but you wont respond to students looking to volunteer their time for free to help you. So you really cant win. I finally found one really nice professor who allowed me to work for free with him, but it is not an area specifically I want to pursue my own degree in. I am interested specifically in treating, and doing research in, adult females with autism spectrum disorder who are also faced with trauma and chronic depression and anxiety, but I am a research assistant in the aging mind and memory. Go figure. It is so discouraging to be blown off on a daily basis when I would just like to ask questions on how to get to my end goal. And why would a student apply only to study what a professor has already studied, when there are many other possible areas they could work in and contribute scholarly work?

There wasn’t much time for research because I graduated in three years rather than the four. I have a 3.5 GPA. My plan is to take a gap year, do some research, and some volunteer work as well.
