French House Adventure
France
Приєднався 24 лис 2020
Hi, welcome to our French House Adventure.
We are Alex and Lesley.
We grew tired of the pressures of life in the UK and so quit our jobs, took our pensions early and looked for a quieter way of life, we found it in an old, run-down house in Normandy, France, that we brought for just €49k in December 2020.
Follow our adventure as we bring this 120 year old house, back into a home after being left empty for over 5 years. Most of the work is done by ourselves only employing trades if really necessary.
The house sits on a quarter of an acre, bordered by a stream (the Ruisseau Saint Martin) at the bottom of the garden. The house has four large bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, kitchen, main salon and a utility room. There are also large cellars under the house. Also included in the sale was the derelict house next door, but the renovation of that will have to wait.

Hi again, welcome to another instalment of our blog. This time we tackle an old stone wall that is in danger of collapse. The problem is that this part of the wall is 7m up and at the base of this wall, is all the debris from the collapsed building, that it was part of. I hope you find it interesting. Our French House Adventure - Part56 Finishing the Top Hallway Area

Hi, welcome to another instalment of the work on renovating our 120 year old house in lower Normandy, France. It's been a while since I posted as I've been doing lots of little bits and pieces inside and out as the weather permits, so I didn't think I had anything to post until I went through what I had recorded. So here is a video I managed to piece together of our top floor stairs and landing...
Our French House Adventure - part55 Finally Finishing the Bathroom
Переглядів 3,7 тис.8 місяців тому
Hello again, we finally finish the top floor bathroom in out 120 year old house in Normandy, France After having to stop work on the top floor until the leaking roof was replaced it is so good to finally get this room finished. The choice of fairly plain tiles has hopefully given it a style that won't look dated in the future. The decision not to use a freestanding bath is a practical one for c...

Our French House Adventure Part52 A Few More Windows
Переглядів 3 тис.11 місяців тому
I'm sure you must be getting fed up of watching me change windows by now, but I am finally getting to the last ones. The improvement from reducing the drafts and condensation is noticeable in the house now. I do have some more to do but they will require fitting double glazed units in the existing frames, so they will take some time to do, not a job for the winter! If you feel like showing your...

Our French House Adventure pt50 Replacing the Ground Floor Hall Window
Переглядів 4,6 тис.11 місяців тому
In the past month I have been replacing a few windows with new double glazed ones to improve the heat retention of our 120 year old house in Normandy France. This video covers replacing the one on the ground floor, underneath the stairs. This window is cut by the stairs so only the bottom 3/4 opens. I will be replacing the top glass at a later date. Our French House Adventure - pt48 More Window Work
Переглядів 3,9 тис.Рік тому
Another instalment in the renovation of our 120 year old house in Normandy France. This time I replace the first floor front bedroom window. I should have done it when I renovated this room last year but there were more pressing work to be done at the time, so I'm going back in a room that has already been decorated. Hopefully not too much mess. I also collect the double glazing units for the w...
Our French House Adventure - pt47 Replacing the other Bedroom Window
Переглядів 4,5 тис.Рік тому
In this instalment of restoring our 120 year old house in Normandy, France, I replace the second window in the main bedroom. This is a big window at almost 2m tall and 1.5m wide, too big for an "off the shelf" solution and too expensive to have "made to measure" so I get creative with two smaller standard windows. At the end is a look at a project that I have completed in the garden while waiti...

bonjour..magnifique piece ..avec un tres beau parquet..encore du tres beau travail de votre part..une maison tres agreable a vivre..bonne continuation..
Hope you do a walk through soon. Great job!
Love your CAD assistance! I actually did a CAD of my grand piano when we moved so I could choose the best fit before the movers lugged it in! LOL
You are multi-talented and it's a pleasure to watch you make progress!
I would call the front room off the bedroom a dressing room. What wonderful light to have closets or wardrobes and a dressing table.
You're gonna need a few skips for that job mate! I'd love to watch you transform that place.
I love your work as always and I also love the colour you chose for the walls. That was a great tip about the plastic bag taped to the wall.
Le rendu de la pièce est magnifique Félicitations
Beautiful floor and lovely room
Wow, the floor sanded beautifully! Room looks terrific.
Thanks, using the small sander takes longer but actually it is still quicker than going out, hiring a big floor sander, then taking it back afterwards. Plus I like the fact that the floor keeps some of its imperfections and undulations, things that the big floor sanders remove.
Very nice love the wall paper
The wallpaper was in the bargain bin as it was end of line. The checkout girl went to great lengths to explain (in French) that I wouldn't get any more to match if I needed it, as I only had three rolls which she was sure wouldn't be enough - the French tend to paper EVERYTHING, the walls, doors and ceiling of a room. I still have a roll and a half left.
The room looks great! Comfortable, restful and relaxing. Nice job!
Looks great. Like how the renovation has come along.
Fabulous
What a nice room it is now
Another job brilliantly done. So so envious of your many skills.
Woah!! fantastic result. So interesting to watch your work . Très belle finition de cette chambre, toujours aussi intéressant de voir votre travail fait avec minutie.💯💯
Looks great well done 😊
Always enjoy your videos. Your work is always done so well and such precision. Do you live here full time and what will you do with all the bedrooms? Do you have a lot of guests or were you thinking B&B? Thanks for sharing.
@@lindamounts2193 yes, we live here in France full time, the extra bedrooms were just a bonus, was only looking for two. Running a BnB is too much work, lol
@@frenchhouseadventure I agree. And you have certainly greatly increased the value of your home and land. I'm sure your wife is quite happy with it.
The trick with the bag was BRILLIANT!!!
Just superb. I always look forward to the 'feature wallpaper' segment and I'm so looking forward to the restoration of the front garden wall/railings. The biggie has got to be reno of the out buildings although I'd be loath to remove the interior wood support framework, it's a work of art in itself.
Not sure I have the budget for a full restoration of the other house.
@@frenchhouseadventure I can understand that. I once watched an Italian who renovated up the outer stone walls of his cottage and built a house within a house off a framework similar to yours, it was a basic OSB board job and it looked superb. Just a thought.
Love the trick with putting a plastic bag to catch the plaster dust.
Something I've always done, most things come in a plastic bag so there is usually one handy. If I don't make a mess, I don't have to clear it up.
What a superb job (as always) 😊
A complete tour of the finished home would be welcomed.
Love the floor turned out well . Nice job as usual on the bedroom .Looks lovely
the floor came would just wonderful. I always look forward to each new video. Your workmanship is amazing.
Beautifull, give us a final your when you finish everything ❤😂
Still got a couple of big'ish jobs to do yet, but a final tour is planned
Another great room folks, thanks for posting.
You have done so much work. Were you in the building trade in the UK?
No, just keen at DIY
Is this telephone and TV antenna sockets?
Yes, to comply with French standards for house wiring I had to have a TV and telephone (RJ45) socket in each bedroom. This was so I could get the "arette" removed from the building to live in it.
Will there be double mattresses to make it higher, easier to stand up
@@Francis-kw9ui yes of course, it's on order
💖💖
Just lovely. Well done...again😁.
Bonjour..votre jardin a beaucoup changer....et votre maison doit être bien agréable à y vivre..j admire votre courage et votre travail...à bientôt..
Nice work😊
Excellent job❤️🇨🇦🐕
Great updates. Butterfly footage was incredible, thank you.
Watered down rice vinegar for your plants keeps bugs off. Mr Houdini 😂
Nice work ! 😀👍
I think you have earned a pay rise - you seem to still be powering through each job as it presents itself. How do you find the materials (paints etc.) that you have been using.
Looks good. It looks like the weather has turned rather chilly in France. Are you noticing a difference with your new windows and added insulation?
Greetings from Tallahassee, Florida! Well done! On your editing. Love your style. Well done on the garden work! Beautiful!! Eagerly waiting next video.
Great paint color choices. Any place for skylights or transoms
The rooms on the top floor don't really feel like they need any more windows
❤
A man who gets things done...great job .love this property👍👍
Great catch up, the garden is looking very nice. I can't wait to see your choice of paint/wallpaper for the bedroom, you have such good taste. I've never heard of the the thin brush on plaster coating before so thx for the tip. It's Always a pleasure to see one of your vids come up.
We have good taste,
The thin plaster is a primer/sealer for plasterboard so that the paper covering on it doesn't soak the paint in, but it really is just very thin plaster
Have followed you from the start. Enjoyed every video. I can't wait to see the before/after video. Larry, Victoria BC Canada
As always a very enjoyable video. Thank you.
Great idea to paint the coving with the thin plaster. You’ve accomplished so much. Are you running out of projects?
The thin plaster really does a good job of disguising the polystyrene coving (and ceiling rose), it makes it look much more like a plaster moulding when its painted. There are still a couple of ceilings that need replacing and a window to re-glaze, (sorry I know that the window replacement seemed never ending but this IS the last one), but most of the big renovation tasks are coming to an end. Although thinking about it, I do need to sort out the cellar/workshop properly...
@@frenchhouseadventure Don't forget you have the other house to sort out......
