Jekyll's Ride
Indonesia
Приєднався 6 лип 2019
I'm a Canadian living in Indonesia, touring solo (mostly) around the country on a small motorcycle (Kawasaki Ninja 250 SL Mono ). I'm not mechanically inclined, I don't know much about "adventure riding" or trail riding, I don't have all the latest gear but my new(ish) motorbike has now been modified into sort of an adventure bike. I plan to ride and camp around the entire country in the months to come and I hope I can take you on amazing rides around this beautiful country and explore the roads, beaches, the food, the people and the culture, and all of this on a (very) tight budget. Heck, if Ted Simon could get around the world with basic gear in the early 70s, I should be able to get around one country. Tag along and enjoy my rides, and remember, Life's a journey, so... Let's Ride On!
Eps 39 - Touring Sumba – Unexpected Traditional Village - Around Indonesia on my Small Motorcycle
This episode of my Grand Motorcycle trip around Indonesia, gave me a taste of the beauty and hidden charm of Sumba. As I traveled from Waingapu to a quiet beach resort on the East coast, I unexpectedly stumbled across the traditional village of Kampung Adat Praiyawang, which appeared to be from another time. There, among the traditional thatched-roof houses, rose multiple stone structures carved with various animals, some of which looked like ancient carvings one might find in Europe. A horse here, and bull's head there, a crocodile, birds and other nondescript creatures seem frozen in time. Fortunately, I met one of the friendly residents who was able to answer my questions. I hope you enjoy the video, and if you do, please comment and subscribe, and don't forget...Life's a Journey...so...Ride On!

There isn't much riding in this episode of my Grand Motorcycle trip around Indonesia but you will find a lot of invaluable information about travelling from Kupang to Rote and to Sumba (as well as to Aimere in Flores) by motorcycle. After struggling myself to find any information about the schedules and fees for the ships or ferries to and from Rote, as well as the ship to Waingapu in Sumba, fr...

This episode of my Grand Motorcycle trip around Indonesia eventually puts me back on asphalt after struggling on the rough roads around Mt. Timao. After waking in the village of Fatunau, my new friends and saviours (see previous episode) invited me to attend a volleyball game they were playing against a neighbouring village before I set on my journey back to Kupang, on what they called a "nice"...

This episode of my Grand Motorcycle trip around Indonesia is Part 2 of my journey around Mount Timao. It was by far the toughest ride of my whole trip, even though I ended up not riding my own motorcycle for most of the crossing. In most hardships, friendships are found and strengthened, and this adventure was no different. I was blessed with meeting a bunch of extraordinary young men whose kin...

In this episode of my Grand Motorcycle trip around Indonesia, I traveled to the city of Soe, in the centre of West Timor, and from there, I tried to reach the north coast. In doing so, I came across one of the most scenic roads in Timor, climbing on the ridges of the hills and mountains surrounding Mount Timao, in the north west of the island, west of the East Timorese enclave of Oecussi. Who w...

This episode of my Grand Motorcycle trip around Indonesia, takes us to two more border posts between Indonesia and Timor Leste. First we travel to the main land entrance to the country which is the border post of Mota'ain, near Atambua, and then we head along the north coast, through the port town of Atapupu, to eventually reach the border post of Wini, which leads to the Timor Leste enclave of...

What a day!! Starting with a brilliant morning on Motadikin beach, followed by a lovely breakfast in a small warung just before the border post of Motamasin, which separates Indonesia and Timor Leste. Then off to the said border where I met amazing people and got the grand tour of the border post, even checking out Timor Leste in the process. That's when the real action began. I then proceeded ...

Talk about highs and lows! This day started off in a surprisingly negative way when a very angry man (who didn't want to identify himself) pretty much evicted me from my camp site, for which I had permission from the owners. But leaving all of this behind and writing it off as a lesson learnt, I moved on to face my first major river crossing, followed by some of the most amazing coastal roads s...

After my "heart attack" scare, I spent about a week resting in Kupang, in West Timor, , and it was great to finally get back on the road. I did get a few setbacks but then again, life wouldn't be as nice if everything went according to plan. I got to find out that I can indeed change a clutch cable and that no matter where you are, most people you meet are not out there to get you, in fact, the...

On this episode I was hoping to explore some of the beaches around Kupang but along the way, I felt the symptoms of what could be a heart attack or a stroke. It brought home the dangers of touring on my own and how vulnerable one can be. It also made me realise that despite my confidence and bravado, my body is ageing and I might one day start feeling my age, even if I don't quite act it. I hop...

This episode of my Grand Motorcycle trip around Indonesia doesn't involve much riding at all as I'm leaving Kalabahi on the island of Alor, to go to Kupang on the island of Timor. Basically, I'll be riding to and from a harbour and that is mostly it. However, I think it's still important to include this in my adventures at it gives a good idea about what travelling through an archipelagic count...

This episode of my Grand Motorcycle trip around Indonesia, takes us around the peninsula of Alor Kecil, north of the city of Kalabahi. Editing skills are awesome. I loved the jeans to beach wear cut. I keep forgetting this was months ago😂.

Thanks. Great memories of Sumba. I think that place was Mr Davids. He died a couple of year's ago. I think his son Hamish is a famous actor in indonesia, married to a pop star. Can't wait for the next episode.
@@walterdavey4196not David’s unless it’s changed a lot since he died. Beach isn’t like that there either. Great episode Daniel!
Hi Daniel. What's the name of that hotel in Waingapu? It looked good. Another excellent video. Thanks.

Thanks. It means a lot to hear that from you. Cheers!
Good timing with the ferry. Enjoy Sumba. I spent 5 weeks there about 20 years ago. Seemed quite wild even a little spooky at times. No other western people. Great ikat.
One of the best places I’ve been to. Great beaches, gorgeous roads (some of them) and amazing waterfalls!
Always Be Careful 😊
Always!
Great info and some beautiful views. Love your picture of Gunung Inerie through the bulls eye ❤
Yeah, that shot was a stroke of luck. Early morning pee, right place, right time, hehe. Just happened to look out the porthole.
Every time I see those blue skies and blue seas - damn I want to be in NTT!! Excellent video. You really show what a ferry trip is like for the uninitiated. But, I am different to you, Daniel. Maybe I suffer from claustrophobia, but I just have to be topside, out on the open deck, out in the breeze. I LONG to be back in NTT and should be there in June. When last in Kupang, I took a ferry to Savu. It was packed to the gunnels as every item sold in Savu comes from Kupang. I didn't get off in Savu as my visa was expiring, so continued on to Waingapu Where did you stay in Kupang and what was the name of that hotel in Waingapu- it looked good. I am always on the lookout for recommendations If you intend to leave Sumba from Waikelo to Sape, there is a good place to stay in Waikelo. It overlooks the port and is called the "Redemptorist Villa". It's a church operated Conference Centre. They were lovely people and the food was good. I visited the Sumba Museum and Cultural Centre at Kodi. It was excellent. Established by a Catholic priest, Father Robert, to record and preserve the indigenous, animist culture of Sumba. In spite of opposition from conservative colleagues, he has persisted with this important project. Thank you, Daniel, for this very enjoyable video.
@@stevencampbell8465 Hello Steven, and thank you so much for your comments. Always loaded with great information and encouragements. In Kupang, I could recommend Home Stay Militia, which has very good AC rooms with hot shower, Smart TV and comfy bed, and is a 5-minute walk from the Bambu Kuning Se'i Restaurant, but my favourite was a place a few minutes further north called Kupang Inn. This was much cheaper, and while the room was much more basic, it came with with free coffee (and water) and excellent breakfast. the place is also used as "permanent" lodging for Afghan refugees awaiting processing for Canada and other places. Some of them have been there for over 5 years and they are nice people to talk to. The place seen in the video, in Waingapu in Sumba, is called Sacca Residence & Resto. It's reasonably priced and comfortable and while not included in the price, they offer great breakfast in the restaurant. With regards to my upgrading to VIP on the ships, I only do so when travelling overnight on journeys over 24 hours. I find it easier to keep an eye on my gear. But I'm with you with the top deck in the open air, whenever available. Cheers Steven!
Great adventure
That was so totally enjoyable Daniel. Thank you. Your trip, especially the Timor section, has inspired me to make my way back there in 2025. I had big plans for an extended trip, east of Lombok, in 2020 - aduh, CORONA!!!! Your type of riding inspires me. Solo, just you and the bike and enough roads that are "of the grid" to make the ride a challenge at times. You will look back on this trip, when it's over, with great fondness. Your footage captures the savagery of the Monsoon in these parts. I well remember when I journeyed from Atambua to Kupang by truck in 1973. The route was via Kefa, Niki Niki and Soe. It took 36 hours. You could only do this trip in the dry season as there were few bridges. We spent a lot of time in the dry river beds searching for a low river bank so we could climb out and soldiers on. I love the blue of the Sea that surrounds Timor. And the people are just the best - so friendly and helpful. Have a rest up in Kupang. - one of my favourite Indonesian cities.
Thanks for watching and for your comments Steven. By the sounds of it, it’s improved an awful lot since the 70s. That road from Atambua to Soe via Wini and Kefa was a joy to ride and in great condition. While I’m glad for the experience, I probably shouldn’t have gone through past the observatory as I ended up being a burden for these young lads who helped me through. That bit was way above my riding abilities. I did enjoy the many crossing through missing bridges on the way to Kupang though. Nonetheless, this is definitely one of the highlights of my journey and I would absolutely recommend putting West Timor on your itinerary for next year. Cheers!
@jekyllsride Thanks for the feedback, Daniel. Keep doing what you are doing. You are forging your own path and showing parts of Indonesia that are rarely visited. Thank you.
Would be crazy to attempt that road/track alone
I would not be surprised if the bridge would be gone, because around my place, i hear a lot of contruction and drilling, basically an average tuesday for me.
Hehe, lots of construction on most of the roads, but for some reasons, I didn’t see any at the missing bridges along the north west coast.
Great adventure. Those buses are pretty tough! Sampai jumpa lagi
Yeah, they seem to go on any type of roads. Cheers!

yeah, it was, but I'm glad it's over, hehe
What a crazy day, it all seems worth it when you get to settle down for food with the family after. Bet you needed the rest! Oof!
Yeah, in hindsight, I'm still glad I did it, but while going through it, I had massive regrets for putting the boys through this.
The few extra days waiting for video were totally worth it. Meeting these guys was a godsend. Entertaining, scary and thought provoking video....just WOW.
Yeah, I feel totally blessed, and grateful for them. Fine people all around, and to them, this isn't an adventure, it's just every day life.
Well, that was quite a ride. Would be difficult for anyone travelling alone on anything other than the lightest of bikes. I am sure the camera did not really show the steepness of the terrain. Well done. How many hours from the Observatory to Fatunuas?
Definitely. I had pretty much resigned myself to turning back before these guys showed up saying they went through on a daily basis. I'm sure glad they were there cause I don't think I could've done it without them. There was even another area near the end, where a bridge was missing and me and one of the guys walked around it on a narrow path, while the bikes took the tougher road, in darkness. Overall, from the observatory, it takes them about 2 hours. On that day, it took about 5.
What a crazy track. Well done.
Thanks mate. Not the kind of thing I want to be doing too often, hehe
I'm glad you are not riding past Lewotobi at the moment. Hopefully all over by May when we get there.
Yeah, I got covered in ashes a few months back when I was in Flores. By the looks of it, it was just the beginning. I hope for your sake that it's over by May, but if not, head to Lembata, Timor, and Sumba. Lots of great riding there as well.
Misteri saya yang di kambani
Beautiful scenery along that road. I really want to ride it next year.
Yes, it was really enjoyable. However, you'll probably need to back track to get back. I don't recommend going through to the north coast this way, unless you love (and are good at) off-roading. Check out today's video to see why, hehe

Are there visa problems if you go into Timor Leste and or Oecusse and then cross back to Indonesia? Loving your videos. We will be leaving Bali at the end of March and following in your foot steps.
As far as I can tell, Indonesians can go across and come back with no issues. For foreigners, it just depends on what country you are from. Canadians need a visa, and the last time I went through, I also needed some special (free) permit form the Timorese embassy in Jakarta to cross the borer overland. I recommend you check with the Timorese embassy for your particular case. Be sure to mention you want to cross the land border.
Ride on.......mate
