    I used this video to sync my carbs but i've got a problem, my Cylinders 1-3 are quiet sync but Cylinder 4 kinda falls of. 1-3 running around 3.5kg and 4 is only at 2.5kg. I changed Sparkplugs and noticed that the carb for 3+4 is running too rich ( black but dry sparkplugs ) and you can also see that the carb for these cylinders spit more fuel, but turning the fuel screws on the carb doesn't seem to do anything fuel wise. Any idea what could be my problem?

    I think that you made a mistake when referring to the small "ball bearing". There should be 2. One in each of the chambers beside the central one that you were "poking"I might also suggest that you do not remove the pump shaft (lock nut, nut and springs) from the shaft, but leave attached to the pump cover. As when refitting and reassembling the unit you will have to recalibrate the pump adjustment to deliver the correct amount of fuel per number of pumps...(maybe it was already correct?)

I wont be using these carbs and will likely be for sale afterwards so I the next owner may have to calibrate.

    I hope you don't mind my saying so, but I reckon you may be doing the spark plugs up a tad too tight. If you ever tighten spark plugs up using a torque wrench to the manufacturers specs, you'll be surprised how light a touch it is. It's actually just a fraction past finger-tight. If they repeatedly get overtightened, they start to leak combustion gasses and compression/ vacuum out/in through the compromised seal where the alloy collar meets the ceramic. This is identified by black/grey stainig in that area (not to be confused with brown 'corona' staining in the same spot which is normal and not caused by leaking gasses). I learned this when I had a vacuum leak I couldn't find, (causing rising and falling revs at idle) and it turned out to be the plugs I'd been over-tightening. It doesn't take much to damage the seal between the ceramic and the alloy because that alloy is soft and susceptible to the twisting motion of the socket. I saw that you noted that you'd already synced the butterflies before you started tuning with the idle screws, but I'll underline to people that you absolutely have to get the butterflies of the two carb bodies really synced first, otherwise you'll never be able to properly tune with the idle 'mixture' (really called 'volume') screws. I've seen lots of people use the idle volume (mixture) screws to try to tune out a problem that's actually being caused by un-synced butterflies. The most extreme casualty of this is when out of frustration, people screw the volume screws in too hard and damage the valve seat, thus ruining the carbs by making them untunable. P.S. I really like the exhaust temperature method you used. That's what propeller aircraft use by way of sensors and cockpit gauges.

    • @alfatechniks887
      @alfatechniks887 4 місяці тому

      Hi thank you for your comprehensive comment. I do agree spark plugs don’t need to be overnight. I should state the recommended torque but didn’t in the video. And yes the top edge of the butterfly plates should just be visible on the first progression hole on across all cylinders to get baseline correct as a starter before synch balancing. Thanks again and really appreciated 👍

    • @balicrimechannel8143
      @balicrimechannel8143 4 місяці тому

      @@alfatechniks887 I haven't used the progression hole method to sync the butterflies before but I'll have to give it a try. Actually I'd never thought to do that before. I usually use a feeler gauge made of a sliver of plastic drinking straw which works well. I open the butterflies, put the feeler at the bottom of the butterflies between the butterfly and the throttle bore then close the butterfly on top of it. Then I keep slowly turning the sync screw until I can just barely pull it out, then I repeat that on the other carb. Easier to do when the carbs are off though and approach it from the back end. I trust mechanical methods to tell me they're synced as opposed to vacuum readings because so many other things can affect vacuum, such as bleed screw position, leaks, varied cylinder compression, rising and falling revs while tuning etc.

      Hi sorry for the delay. In short no and you may have to web search the differences. Assuming the G is a later carb and there will be minor differences. Things to look out for are air bypass screws, the 4 might have 4 progression holes and the G might have 5. Potentially one or both might be an emissions version? Minor changes changes in mouldings, e.g the idle mixture screws. I may have given you an idea but please search more on the web. Cheers

    Fun times... this was the first structural job I did on mine many years ago (although mine wasn't as far gone as yours), and it did give me the confidence to keep doing bodywork on the car. I've just finished full length sill replacements and a variety of other repairs including doors and some stuff around the boot and screens. Previous repairs always add complications, the problem being that the cars used to be cheap so repairs were often not done very well. Did the car have an MOT? Over in NZ there is no way that would have passed our equivalent, they are really fussy about rust, even though our cars generally don't rust anywhere as much as they do in the UK. I have seen ex UK cars under restoration here, and the "tidemark" is usually much higher up the structure than NZ cars :) I look forward to watching the process.

    • @alfatechniks887
      @alfatechniks887 8 місяців тому

      To be fair I should have done it a couple of years ago but the door project took longer than I thought and I didn’t have much spare time. It’s off the road for now until it’s repaired, cars older than 40yrs old in the UK don’t require an MOT but we are still expected to maintain them unsure upkeep and for safety! This one will be a steep learning curve and it will probably run well into our spring. Next video will be stripping down and front valance removal, then onto the repairs.

    • @markbattley8515
      @markbattley8515 8 місяців тому

      I had forgotten about the no MOT requirement for older cars. We don't have that here, in fact older than the year 2000 the checks are 6 monthly which is nuts, particularly for classics that may not do many kms in that time. Look forward to seeing the next stage... and what else you find as you dig inwards.

    That's a good result, I'm wondering now if there is something in the pickled eggs or spices that acts as a levelling and brightening agent and if you would get the same result with pure vinegar. Also is the objective of adding the bicarb' to totally neutralise the vinegar or is it still on the acidic side?

    • @alfatechniks887
      @alfatechniks887 9 місяців тому

      Vinegar is mainly ethanoic acid s as be when mixed with a metal, a zinc ethanoate is produced along with hydrogen gas which you saw bubbling. pity about the low sound. I was taught that when you do your final torque setting you crack the thread by rotating the bolt backward just enough to free it then rotate the bolt clockwise to the correct torque setting. Tried and tested and it makes all the difference.

      Reduces the risk of air leaks, and longer intakes provides more torque at bottom end

    Funny that, we are both doing the same job on opposite end of the world. My spider drive door lines up great but when I close the door it hits the catch and ends up lifting the door s little, when you open the door it drops. I spent 3 hours play with hinges nothing worked and ended up scratching the door. Nothing is adjustable on the door latch, I may have to grind a little of the latch. 👍

      Oh nice work, the receiver plate on the B pillar is adjustable. It may also have shims behind it. Yes I had in the end had to use a file just to allow some room on the latch.

    You have to use the black putty stuff between the metal door seal channels and the body, or they will rub and start rusting within a year.

      Hi that’s a very good question unfortunately I would not be able to tell you the answer. Strictly speaking there is no such thing as an Alfa Romeo Carburettor for this period, they mainly used Dellorto’s or Weber’s. It all depends on your inlet manifold
