Snail Trail
Australia
Приєднався 3 чер 2017
Mainly videos of living snails and shells, mainly Australian (Far North Queensland) but other natural history items will also feature. I have come to realise that many of the "common" snail and shell species are virtually unknown as living animals for most people. I have tried to show the living animal in a natural setting where possible although many videos have sections taken in the aquarium.

Conus frigidus - Frigid Cone
This species of cone is sparsely common on the rocky headlands. Apart from conchological differences, it differs from Conus flavidus in the colour of the animal (yellow in C. flavidus) and from C. lividus which has strong nobbly coronations. There does appear to be a hint of coronation but, not having retained the specimen, I am unable to confirm except to say that my first thought was to call it a C. frigidus.
Lucky for the cheeky gobies these cones are vermivores.

Cypraea saulae - Saul's Cowrie
Переглядів 7953 роки тому
This cowrie is one of those shallow water shells that can be found at low tide but is a genuinely rare species in Queensland and generally remains frustratingly elusive. All too often the person finding this shell reports it simply “wandering across the sand” or sitting exposed besides a small fragment of coral. For a shell with such an eye-catchingly brilliant orange mantle that seems unlikely...
Coelocion australis - Australian Megaspire Snail
Переглядів 2963 роки тому
One of my favourite local snails. I have finally managed to film this lil fella live. I first found an empty specimen as a child near a rainforest stream in the Whitsundays. Since then I have tried to find one without great success till now. They are rather well camouflaged and look like tiny sticks in the leaf litter. They are also sometimes found in fallen palm fronds. The ones inhabiting pal...
Decatopectern strangei - Strange' s Pecten
Переглядів 1943 роки тому
This Pecten was found on intertidal sand flats in the Whitsundays. These bivalves have generally eluded me over the years but this trip I came across two different species. This one was set in amongst some seaweeds and barely exposed at the lowest tide.
Conus litteratus - Lettered Cone
Переглядів 7393 роки тому
Here is a video I took in 2017. The Conus litteratus were rather abundant at Vlasoff Cay. Over the course of the tide I would have seen over two dozen. For such large shells they all looked in excellent condition with no obvious battle scars or growth lines.
Common Crow Butterfly
Переглядів 2083 роки тому
The Common Crow is a widespread butterfly along the North Queensland coast as well as occurring elsewhere along the northern and eastern Australian coast. This video was taken on the Coleman River on the Cape. There would have been a thousand or more butterflies clustered in a small area. Amazing to walk through the vine thicket surrounded by a gentle swirl of black and white wings.
Epitonium lamellosum - Lamellose Wentletrap
Переглядів 4873 роки тому
This wentletrap is a very widely distributed species that is apparently pantropical. Locally (in Australia) it has been referred to as Epitonium perplexum. Despite its wide-ranging distribution it is rarely found live being most commonly encountered in the beach drift. This specimen is about 25mm in length.
Dicathais orbita - Cart-wheel Purple
Переглядів 3463 роки тому
The Cart-wheel Purple or Cartrut Shell is a common feature of the surf washed rocky headlands and outcrops along the southern Australian coast. This video was taken off a rock wall at Fremantle near Perth. For a shell that is constantly washed by rough surf it was very shy of coming out of its shell. Many many minutes were spent for the few seconds of live footage.
Planaxis sulcatus - Furrowed Clusterwink
Переглядів 6173 роки тому
As the name suggests this periwinkle lives in clusters along the shoreline. It is commonly found on rocks and piers from the low tide up to the mid tide mark. They seem quite at home on the spray line exposed to the blazing hot tropical sun.
Cypraea walkeri - Walker's Cowrie
Переглядів 4293 роки тому
A video from the Whitsundays. Walker's Cowries were very common during this tide although I missed seeing any on eggs. Most were encountered crawling around with the incoming tide or sheltering beneath small rubble and at the base of seaweed such as Halimeda. The one shown has a rather brown mantle although they also come with a brighter reddish mantle.
Conus rattus - Rat Cone
Переглядів 4753 роки тому
A Rat Cone from a muddy inshore reef. I was almost too lazy to pick up what looked like a dead cone stuck in a crevice but it turned out to be a mature rat in very good condition. The animal is a beautiful dark ash to black with gold highlights and white speckles. This species has a large operculum about 1 cm in length. The video does not quite do it justice.
Signepupina thomsoni - Long-tongued Chrysalis Snail
Переглядів 3483 роки тому
I have always had a soft spot for these pretty little snails . Called Chrysalis Snails but I think of them as honey-drop snails. As the first ones I saw were bright golden and very like a drop of honey. I have never had much success finding these snails. Although apparently widespread along the Queensland coastline they seem very patchy in distribution with small groups colonising the odd rotti...
Strombus vittatus - Banded Stromb
Переглядів 1,2 тис.3 роки тому
This stromb is superficially similar to but rather more uncommon than the locally abundant Strombus campbelli. A closer examination shows it has a taller spire and is paler and more delicately patterned. This shell was emerging from a coastal sandbar with the incoming tide late in the afternoon.
Strigatella scutulata - Black-banded Mitre
Переглядів 2603 роки тому
This mitre is filmed on a coastal headland in North Queensland. The crevice it chose to lay its egg capsules in looks rather exposed to predatory fish but was great from my perspective as I had an unobscured shot of it. I have not disturbed it to show its underside as it was still in the process of laying.
Nassarius luridus - Lurid Mud Whelk
Переглядів 4983 роки тому
A common but very endearing little dog whelk (Nassarius luridus) common on the mudflats in the Cairns region. The video shows a mass of dog whelks fighting over a dead shrimp they found. More were constantly coming in following the scent trail. The final cut shows a pair mating - they have a rough way of breaking it off! Now a synonym of Nassarius graphiterus (Hombron & Jacquinot, 1848).

Bembicium auratum - Gold-mouthed Conniwink
Instead of killing those fvcking crown of thorns , you let him terminate your clam ?
Thanks for posting this video. Saw an empty shell today and was curious.
You are welcome
This family is completely unreported on iNaturalist, so I'm very happy they're still around
Absolutely beautiful!😍
👁️ 👁️
How did the triton shell get gray and rough like that?
It naturally looked like that. It is a Cymatium and they are not shiny like Tritons.
@@snailtrail1322 Oh. Some other shells in the same genus (Cymatium, or more recently, Monoplex) like Cymatium parthenopeum has color from what i see on images in Google.
Hi, I am a UA-camr from Taiwan. I am making a video of hermit crab. sudddenly I saw your video. I love this video so much and I am wondering if I can use this video for about 5-15 seconds in my video on UA-cam. If you are willing please let me know, thank you
you are welcome. Please attribute me :)
Incredible capture! Thank you so much, I had a question, Is this spider observed in Mangroves?
I have only seen them on the reef
Oh understood, Again, it's probably the only documentation of the habitat of these magnificent spiders, so thank you
What a little beauty. You really have some great finds!
TY
Some dude : "When you stare into the abyss, the abyss stare back at you" Conch : " :) "
A beauty.
Exactly what I was looking for. Great video!
Klu boleh tau ini dmn ya?
I would have assumed that what looked like a blob of washed-ashore seaweed and muck was just that: a blob of washed-ashore seaweed and muck. I would not have guessed that it was actually a living sea snail! As far as camouflage goes, these little guys are bringing their A game!
Indeed. Can be hard to spot even for experienced folk
Those little googly eyes, though! Just looking at you. Peering. I swear, those are cartoon character eyes, not something you’d expect to see on a very real snail!
That looks like he’s out of his shell. Mine is as well & I wondered if he would be ok? Seems fine right now putting along. 😮
surprised they havent made their way into the aquarium trade
Please allow permission to download this video
No worries. But please attribute to me if you repost
My best friend, It's always great. We liked and enjoyed to the end. Thanks
Very good video👍
I will literally never get tired of looking at conch faces.
"generic bathroom decoration lookin ass" to "oh yeah, scallops are real weird beasts"
adorbS! it makes me sad to see other videos of people cooking and butchering these liddle conchys
Sa-ang man gud na.
This video teached me how to make a clay version of a cone snail💀
great animal
Very nice, I've been finding a few of these recently too :D
That cone was made into Harry's nipple
David Attenborough: Ah yes, a wild t-re.....I mean emu with his offspring!
I think it is crazy to manipulate such animals. Just one no so placid as the rest and you would be in trouble.

Those fangs!
There is like no info on this creatures only on their shells.
Saw one of these at Balmoral Beach in Sydney today. It was beautiful
Perfect animal 🤟🏾🇧🇷
Hello there, my earlier comment was deleted so I'm posting again. We're looking for a video of Strombus vittatus walking on sea floor for Japanese TV program. Do you have any other videos of Strombus vittatus we might be able to use? Thank you!
Hello Tomo. Thank you for appreciating my videos. Unfortunately I do not currently have a Strombus vittatus video apart from this one.
