Site due for big revamp as soon as can get round to it. Much of the videos here will be no longer be available- but some maybe replaced by equivalent. Still dedicated mainly to the playing of John Martyns music, tuition and 'covers'.
2014-JuneLiverpool- Martynesque delay guitar playing demo'
Short rough n' ready demo' on Martynesque guitar playing using delay. Trialing a new El Capistan delay unit I'd just bought (but recorded here using just video mic). Concentrates on showing right hand picking using delay. Casual partial performances of Rather Be the Devil & Outside In. Just the way I do it, might be of some use to some folk.

Bit of fun at mi local bar. Recorded with just zoom h2 recorder then compressed and limited in 'reaper' software a bit. [JM guitar nuttas: Been away for awhile. The original tuning for this well known now. CGEbFBbD.. Recorded with just a zoom h2 recorder 24bit wav, then compressed and limited in 'reaper' software, a bit. ]

Guitar Clinic-Playing John Martyn-Delay/Echoplex- Ian'Mc'G at Syston-JM Summer Gathering 2013
Переглядів 12 тис.11 років тому
A guitar 'clinic' on my approach to playing John Martyns echoplex/delay style music, held earlier in the day at the first John Martyn Summer Gathering, held at Syston Leicester, in June 2013. I did this just after Philip Taylors clinic on Johns actual guitar effects rigs, and these two clinics complemented each other quite well, I think. Many thanks again to Pip for letting me use his Guild D55...

Live cover at the John Martyn Summer Gathering at Syston, Leicester 8 June 2013. Martin Byrne stepped up to do bass, and me playing Yamaha FG with Fishman mag' pickup through Pip Taylors 'modern echo rig'. Really indebted and grateful to both Martin and Pip for this opportunity. First time I play with a bass player and I get Martin !! Dropped on there. He's got some very fine lines that bloke.....
You Don't Know What Love Is by Raye & de Paul- A Cover-John Martyn version
Переглядів 1,8 тис.11 років тому
Cover by me of 'You Dont Know What Love Is'. Based on the cover that John Martyn has on the Glasgow Walker album, also found on the soundtrack for the film 'The Talented Mr Ripley'. This is a 'Great American Songbook' song (influential songs 1920-60), and has been covered by some great artists, originally written by Gene De Paul(music) and Don Raye(lyrics) for an Abbot and Costello 1941 film bu...
Sweet Little Mystery by John Martyn - A Cover
Переглядів 8 тис.11 років тому
Cover by me of this popular song that John Martyn wrote. From the album 'Grace and Danger'. I've played this for awhile. There are plenty of videos- of JM performing this, both left and right hand seeable. I think a good song for any aspiring 'Martynesque' guitar player who wants to start using this tuning, and who has a bit of fingerpicking under their belt [JM Guitar Nuttas:Prob' this video a...
Good Night Irene (style of John Martyn) -A Cover
Переглядів 2,1 тис.12 років тому
Cover by me of a cover of Good Night Irene by John Martyn ..based on the 'On The Cobbles' album version. John didnt play guitar on that, though Jim Tullio did. JMs vocals were brilliant on this, and recorded in a very unusual fashion I have on good authority! Mavis Staples was the guest dual vocalist. They created a thick warm atmosphere on this song. The chord progression is unlike any Ive hea...
Lay It All Down by John Martyn -A Cover (v2)
Переглядів 2 тис.12 років тому
Cover by me of 'Lay It All Down' by John Martyn. Originally on the Sundays Child album (rel 1975). [Jm Guitar Nuttas: A second attempt by me on this, after some thought. I am now convinced this is in regular tuning (at some pitch). I incorrectly used sus4 tuning on my first attempt. Here my guitar was stuned 2 tones down from concert pitch, but capoed up one tone at fret 2, so I used DGCFAD to ...
Beverley -by John Martyn -A Cover (vers2)
Переглядів 46612 років тому
Cover by me of `Beverley' by John Martyn, originally on the Inside Out album (rel 1973). Entirely instrumental piece, and for me one of Johns finest ever compositions.[JM Guitar Nuttas: I did this awhile back, wrongly, blending it as he did with BTWeather. The tuning for this is open sus4, and here I used Csus4, because of the capo on fret 2 (open strings tuned to Bb F Bb Eb F Bb 2 tones below ...

Suzanne by John Martyn - A Cover
Переглядів 1,6 тис.12 років тому
Cover by me of Suzanne from the 1996 John Martyn album 'And'. Not a solo piece by John Martyn, always done in band format, but he always played this on acoustic. [JM Guitar Nuttas: I did this two tones down from dropped D, so Bb F Bb Eb G C. This is in the major key of the tuning (Bb here as I used), so if using actual dropped D tuning it would be in Dmajor. I've been told- on very good authori...

Cover by me of 'Walk To The Water' by John Martyn off of the 'Bless The Weather' album 197,1 Island Records. Incidentally, the guitarist-singer John Smith did a very nice cover of this, for the recent John Martyn tribute album, & well worth a listen to. [JM Guitar nuttas: I used regular tuning but tuned open 2&1/2 tones down, tho' guitar here is capoed up 2 tones..net effect I was 1 semitone do...

Wicked cover. What is the tuning?
Terrible sound! Get real!
I've heard of and listened to guys like Steve Hillage but I've never heard of John Martyn until today.
Hi Kenny. You have come across real talent. He was like nobody else...
The video makes it look a bit dead and church hall is. But if it had landed round you'd have seen all the open gobs, including mine.
John was a different gravy he didn’t follow anyone that’s for sure
Incredible footage of an incredible man. I shook his hand twice.!😃
simply exquisite 🎤 🎸
may you neeeever lose ya teeempeerrrrrr .... *hick :P :O :=/ :) !!!!!111!!111
Strong powerful playing and a credit to the man. Well done. You are one of the few people who can get his groove.😊😊 Keep it coming
I would bet a million dollars that The Edge was first inspired by JM use of echoi/space, but he never gives him credit.
Minimoog. Oberheim SEM. Old SSM Sequential Prophet-5. Can hardly get better.
6:50 The percussionist looks like Tony Banks!🤣
Sublime
A legend on that guitar!
Great video. I've seen another track from this gig, Hurt In Your Heart, which is also amazing. Is there somewhere on UA-cam, the whole recording, all the tracks from this performance? Where was this recorded?
He and Kevin Coyne have possessed me very soul I tell ya
With John Martyn, usually, it's not the work of the fingers the most difficult. It's the slap and tapping. You have it Ian !
If I remember correctly, John Martyn played on a Yamaha FG (180, l think), at the start of his career.
I have a feeling that the chances this comment will be read by you, let alone anyone at all, will be incredibly small. - but I'm 22, and my dad has raised me on John's stuff since I can remember. And I'm now even more of a fan of John's stuff, particularly from 1968-1978, than my dad ever has been! And I'm proud to know John Martyn's music in the depth I do. And I play acoustic guitar, and I feel it's fair to say that if you play, there is that little bit more appreciation that's had when studying the way John's played over the years. I love this version, because it's so raw and by the sounds of it, one of the first times he plays it live all considering. - I wish more people, let alone people my age born in 2000, knew of John's music - and that he got the appreciation he deserved. Even if you're not a massive fan of his music, I feel like his versatility and talent in the many techniques he performed is so overlooked in the history of acoustic/rock/blues/folky genres. But at the end of the day, I know his stuff, his earlier stuff inside out. And come back to it again and again. And I guess to me that's all that matters. There are some people like John who just have "it" and somehow with what seems like the same effort others put into their craft, manages to create, in my opinion, some of the most incredible ways of playing an acoustic guitar that I've come across.
Thank you, Ian, This is superb. Can you tell us who else is in the band?
I keep watching this video over and over to try and figure out the picking pattern with the slap and tweaking my tape echo pedal - not an echoplex sadly - been trying to figure this song out properly for years but your vids have got me the closest so far. Is JM just using an echoplex and boomerang wah on this? Thanks again, great cover.
Accoustic guitar like no other, fabulous! John Martyn has provided the soundtrack to my life since the 1970's and he always will.
Ian..Your right this is F.....Phenomenal !!!!!!!!! Too bad Phil Collins didn't tour with john on Glorious fools Tour!!!
I noticed his drummer was still playing a left handed kit though.
really nice variations
Brilliant!
Brilliant cover this!
This was the first time I saw John, Birmingham Odeon ‘81 and met him briefly after. An indelible experience musically and spiritually. His last outing with the echoplex. Much as I love Max Middletons work, its unnecessary here as is congas, but Johns sound is wonderful as ever. The audacity of the suit jacket without shirt!
Hi 'Ian', I have the full video that this clip was taken from, recorded at the time of airing. I did a VHS transfer recently - the audio is good and video too. As you are such a fan I would happily donate the complete recording to your site. Please advise how best to get the file to you, if you are interested (345MB). The broadcast programme video was entitled One World and features these songs: One World, Johnny Too Bad, May You Never, Outside In/Inside Out and finishes with Hurt in Your Heart - runtime just over 28 minutes. Of course I could start my own UA-cam channel but as you have so much great material here, it seems the best place for it.
Wow !!! What a voice. These are amazing guitars and lovely rendition
Brilliant…. Thankyou
Brilliant! Wonderful version. What about the tuning?
Did you ever find out the tuning?
@@nicolasspahr5510lt's an open tuning in C major. CGCCGE.
If thats Johns Ecoplex I might be the one I got for him in 2004...
My tribute to John: ua-cam.com/video/zXdKQp1DbWw/v-deo.html
Very good sweet beautiful and amazing thank you so much for the dedication to my daddy's music, all my love Spenser Mcgeachy.x
you're old man was the greatest musician to have ever lived - I'm 23 and have been telling everyone in my generation to listen to his music! The world is a better place with John's music. Never again will there be such an awesome sound from a single man. Much respect to you Sir.
Hiya Spenser... Met you at John's funeral. Bless him. Those were the days when he was around and in his prime. He was a one off, you can have the rest of them..
JM In the Zone. Nothing finer.
Excellent!!
This is fecking Rad! Thanks for sharing, Big JM fan here
Only 500 people seen this. Hope you are still strong and singing the master.
So half baked, but still stunning
John Martyn meets Terry Riley?
There is a suspiciously left handed drum kit at 0:55 and 8:44
Who's on keyboards? This is around the time just before Glorious Fool so is it Max Middleton? Minimoog, Prophet-5 and Oberheim SEM. Nice.
John’s guitar playing is simply STUNNING!!!
Yeah he’s in top form here. Captivating stuff
I've seen this man live twice. Both times in the 1980's and i'd rather have said i'd missed Jimi than missing this gig. During a time in musical history where we have become the McDonalds of the music industry, this is a nice reminder of what we had and what could have been. Rock on John and thanks for all the deep emotional stuff that is so hard to find these days..
Bloody hell, this just appeared out of nowhere when I was writing something on another forum. Hope you're ok Ian - wherever you are. I watched this years ago and it helped to make sense of everything. Motorcycle maintenance stuff. Next time you're over....
I rather wish he hadn't, but Dick Gaughan once said to me that is you want to know how a guitarist has a wank, watch his right hand. Years of speculation, but I think we can concur, the big man preferred tutti fruiti over vanilla every time!
The ending of that song, really gets me, good job sir!
So nice. You gotta tab mate?
Whats the tunin sounds like drop d capo 3rd fret ?
4th sorry lol
Why 6 years late? Can I give you £20 for a beer when the pubs open? You’re as good as the best
Top quality man, serious respect!
