Hi Ian, nice to hear a new one of you, hope you are fine! I never heard this song before, but I know, it is on the Solid Air Deluxe Edition. And like anytime, when you are playing: It feels so good to listen to you! Thanks my friend!
@DOUGALL1001 Hiya , good to hear from you....thanks for listening in. Yes, I really like this one of Johns, full of atmosphere like alot of his others from that time I think. -Ian
Great version of this hidden gem! Guitar playing as always great, pulse push the song forward, very nice use of pauses and space within the song, very nice vocal phrasing! I agree with Kevin, great to hear your vocal up in the mix! Cool performance, and it's great to hear your guitar and vocal again, makes the UA-cam richer! Cheers, mate! -karl
Outstanding! I have to buy this album! It it wasn't for YOU I'd never hear this! Most excellent performance Ian. Love the subtle pull-offs and classic slap. I agree with irvpav - we just have to close our eyes and imagine :) All stars ************* cheers, julie
@irvpav Cheers for listening in Irv!...not been uploading for awhile- tho I do play for relaxation most nights...I like playing this..and only recently gravitated to what I think is the 'best' way to play this...its a gem of a rare JM song I think. -Ian
Superb ..and its great to hear your voice "higher" in the mix ... I had never heard this song before (probably cos I don;t have the aint no saint album) .....but its wonderful to listen to an unfamiliar JM song done by you ...just to see how close you get to fooling me ,,,,,and you do get bloody close on most occasions to be honest......Kev
@electricragtime Many thanks Kev. Vocal mix: I find it hard still to decide 'exactly where'..I know I want it a bit more than guitar- done that my last few uploads..& messin lately with things to try for clarity. Yet my 'big' aim is the warmness he got on his home recordings. Here I recorded with lower signal level from the 'guitar' mic & ended up almost no messin for the 'master' mix, I think better in a way! btw..JM sings this on utube-his 1972 voice-well worth a listen-so bloody *warm* -Ian
@da1698 Heyup Davey. Thanks for looking in and comment..The info-youre welcome- My version uses that ii minor chord down the neck root on 5th string. The vocals- I just try to be 'non-ornamental'-if that makes sense...owt else seems daft for my 'type' o' voice. LG also uses dadgad (well,.sus4 at some pitch anyway)..Im pretty sure this is right..the time he wrote this (72)..the tones I hear...and my picking is simple on this i think..just a few subtle bits so the beat is unhindered.-Ian
@buniluvr Hello there Julie, really good to hear from you. Like I said to Irv- not been utubing alot lately- cos of all that work stuff..but good to know I can make some good sounds for you still- thats an acid test I reckon!!...Youre right- there is deal of subtle work -both hands I think-on this-at least the way I think he played it..in order to maintain that 'backslap' beat and groove. John playing this- is on utube by the way..I love this gem of a discovered song. -Ian
@jamesfdonaldson I'll tek option on shavin mi legs Jim ;-) I suspected the clarity vs warmth thing. I found out recently the 'home tapes' (that I admire so much) of John, actually are *not themselves* good quality (his sound man told me this), they were processed on a modern state of the art studio desk for their release to the public (box set)..so maybe Im strugglin for nowt there. But the 'solid air' album sound- yes-studio valve gear in 72. btw- *your* voice timbre- I'd have that!!
@johnmartyntribute Hello there- ta for dropping in...and for comment also. btway...this is on utube: just type in " john martyn in the evening" l think its a great atmosphewric song...-Ian
@ianmcgeachy Can't find it, except a version from LiteGauge. But it could be, that this song is blocked in germany like just about everything from SolidAir! Anyway, then I listen to your version. ;-)
@nolittleboy Heyup there Pete...well...best way is to move to middle of f**g nowhere..yet be a untreatable JM guitar nutta ;-) Thanks for sentiment too, coming from a peer it means alot I suspect we both know what its like to literally 'ache' to be able to play anywhere near approaching this bloke, and make some of the sounds he made. PS Love to hear your G&D gig soon Pete, but maybe too soon for me getting back to Uk I think. -Ian
@karlake2 Ta' karl. & Ive just managed to access my email acct for your album!! last night (so busy I am lately at work)..alot to listen to there squire- looking forward to it, when I take leave from work soon..Glad u like this..The vocals-yes a bit higher I think in mix- I dont 'like' my voice -I tolerate it-, but dont mind singing as long as the mic is sensitive & I hit the tones-so I use cap' mics-& what comes out is 'it'..my phrasing-part JM 'style', part dictated by the picking I use-Ian
@fivethumbsfrank Cheers....I dont think I pick this exactly like John did...I think in truth the 'original picking' is actually somewhere between Litegauges approach and mine..mine is a fairly simple (plus 1 or 2 subtleties) and also quite repetitive approach I think. I played around with this on & off ..but eventually I got satisfied enough with what I did-for the time being. -Ian
There's a 'mood' about it Ian , maybe's that minor key thing....yer so good at it man.....but..I'm in a minority ,( of one !!! ) I know on this here channel......I want even more from your vocal. Anyway, ..careful, there's always a price to pay , when looking for more 'warmth' in the voc....good to hear another upload....I'm strugglin' at the minute...doodlin with a few only. Jim
@freeman2545 You are v welcome squire.Message thing.. I did that cos I got weird messages a while back..all kindsof daft stuff...but I read your message on my channel page- left one on yours too...havent been around much lately on the tube...must catch up at some point with your stuff too...Im getting old..would like to retire -but cant afford it yet! -ta for the feature on your page too, I'm chuffed at that- no ones ever done that for me before-very grateful I am..Ian
@jamesfdonaldson Hello there & ta' Jim. Apologies if I've not looked in lately on your stuff..Im in the thick of it here- work, illness, lifes s**t etc. I did this almost as therapy for myself! Jim..you're becoming the 'Ike' to my 'Tina'..wanting 'more' from me in performance! (though I must say I wont wear *really short skirts* for you ;-)...probably..)..Yes, tradeoffs -warmth (and I 'want' guitar + vox)-but I dont know precisely what factors they are-clarity (it seems to me), is one? -Ian
@ianmcgeachy Nae bother Ian.....you ain't missed owt. !!!...maybe a few to upload soon, dunno. Would you shave yer legs then ? LOL.....what I'm lookin' for is more Ian than John here on voc...but that's just me. warmth v clarity....your right, ..I'm guessing here, but chance is , 70's and even some now....studios had big valve run gear and reputedly famous for 'warm sound', one clue maybe to his sound. ..but hey, voice timbre,we're all different. Jim
@johnmartyntribute strange that..but I know theres alot of stuff blocked as you say- in Germany. If u send me message - with your email address Ill see what I can do. -Ian
@ianmcgeachy ...I'll let you get on with yer work Ian...a quickie. ...if you've access to a compressor , try a wee bit on the vocal mic...any adjustment on the pattern ( cardiod etc ) on the mic . maybe give that a try. My larynx is going down the pan , singing all this stuff at week-end gigs....''l will walk 500 miles....da da da "...brings a pay day Jim
@freeman2545 Ha Ha...well they were for all sorts of stuff (honest!)...but none of em telling me the same things as the voices in my head ;-) Work till we're dead eh...thats the plan for us then?....bring on the revolution...(when I buy mi Polynesian Island wi' lovely Polynesian beauties, I'll send an invite for thi' as resident performing act...now ..wheres mi tablets...) -Ian
@mvo5720 Agian wi t'dude stuff...whats happening Mike...they've converted you...a 'Gangsta Geordie wi a bus pass'.!!...Ok..my 'hooded jacket'..I see.. well..its primary purpose was for the cold wintery desert nights here a week or so back...not to remain anonymous when shoplifiting....tho I can see how Im mistaklen for a ypoung 55yr old hoodie ;-) Havent been lookin much on yer stuff MIke..must do when I get more time to scratch mi own arse over here..-Take care old bean -Likely Lad Ian

A bit confused on the tuning.. Would a Csus be an open c tuning?
