      A lot of people like to see old machinery still working and Steam engines are considered to have more character than more modern trains. The sound is very different & the smell of the Steam & the coal fire can be appealing. The XPT which is now getting old itself has a strong following helped by the pleasant exhaust note of the two power car Diesel engines.

    I caught the train to school from Revesby to St James from 1981 to 1985. So many stories to tell. Sometimes during heavy rains, Wolli Creek would flood from Bardwell Park to Turrella. The water level was way above the wheels and the red rattlers went through without a problem. The waves created was like being on a ferry.

    There is a blue steel plaque on a rock on the platform near the signal box in memory of Noel Hawley, a young railway worker (night duty officer) who was shot dead near the signal box by a local drunk on a rampage with a .22 rifle in the 1970's, he left a young wife and baby daughter behind at Lithgow. Surprised that Leanne or one of the old timers at the pub didn't tell you the story. Great clip Barrie, Rydal Show is well worth attending, I used to go each year.

    I remember having the doors open whilst travelling 100km/h and sticking my head into the breeze. Also peggi g fruit out of the train and onto the steel centenary support structures and watching them explode on impact. Also of pressing the pressure relief valve when we had pneumatic door closing versions. The sound of the motors revving up with a sharp “ping” when the acceleration atopped and coasted was fun as was the shunting between powered and non powered carriages. The smell of the brakes too was unique. My favourite were the really old rattlers built in the 1920s with triple leaf springs which bounced all over the place and were very loud. I loved the lights which were incandescent and glowed a warm yellow light that was relaxing as a child. Loved the red rattlers and glad to experience the joy of riding them many times. A bygone era where things were made to last.

    Nice video. It’s not a joke to call the XPT a High Speed Train, just incorrect. Did the Australian authorities ever call the XPT a high speed train with it’s design speed of 99 mph? Perhaps, since I did hear a tv news presenter say that the XPT replacement trains are going to be bullet trains although they are no faster than the XPT, having the same design speed. The BR IC125 the XPT is based on is now only classed as Higher Speed Rail (up to 125 mph). Though the definition of higher-speed rail varies from country to country, most countries refer to rail services operating at speeds up to 200 km/h (125 mph) as Higher speed Rail. Wikipedia. The XPT with its lower geared power car traction motors has a design speed of 160 km/h (99.4 mph). This is necessary to cope with the hilly terrain the XPT has to traverse. The BR IC125 would not perform well at all in Australia. People who run down the XPT for being slow do not consider the arduous conditions it has to work in, not just the long steep gradients but the poor quality track in places.

    • @trainspottingwithbarrie
      @trainspottingwithbarrie 24 дні тому

      Hi, thanks for commenting. Yeah when the XPT was released it was heralded as Australia's high speed train with an advertising campaign saying as much. It was all hype at the time but back then it was substantially faster than anything else NSW had, today that's not so much the case. Thanks for watching 👍
