1951 Chevy 3100 5 window conversion & instructions
Here's a 25 minute video of my 5 window from 3 window conversion on my 1951 Chevy 3100.
I used a $250 cab, cut out what I needed, sold the rest, made money, and converted my truck into a 5 window.
This will be the same process for the GMC, and will be mostly the same if you're using reproduction panels (might require more fitting)
feel free to message me with any questions you might have or suggestions for things I may have missed.
enjoy the video and I hope you get something out of it!
Cheers,
JP

Just discovered your channel, it’s great! I’m over in kelowna and building the exact type of projects you have. Currently doing a 49 surburban. Done a few of the 5 windows, love those trucks . Been thinking about doing you tube too. lol. Definitely have a new subscriber out of me 🎉
Thank you kindly! It's a great hobby and the UA-cam thing is fun too once you start getting a hang of it. If you have any questions or need help with videos feel free to send an email, I'll do what I can. I love any late forties/fifties vehicle, so much class. Those burbs are awesome, I'd def build one if I got the chance
Congrats on the following 👌
👊
Just subbed! Can you do a video on your cnc plasma table? I’ve been wanting to get one and have been heavy into fusion 360
I outsource my CNC parts. I don't have room yet for the equipment or material storage. Luckily I found a really good shop locally that's friendly to hot rodders.
So far so good....well done!
You might consider using a narrow SS nut and then a brass acorn type nut to lock them together, with the right pre-load. It would look classier.
That does sound pretty attractive. I'll consider for the next sets.
Looks perfect
👊 thanks
I wanna do this conversion to mine
It wasn't too bad. Toughest part was the window seam.
@@badomanclassics I have very little welding experience, so until I get better, I'm not going to jump into doing this. But definitely on the list to do.
I also have very little experience, that was why I tried to do this. Good opportunity to learn
I like the 5 window cab for driving, but I love the look of the 3 window better....
I love the 3 window also, but this was an opportunity to learn and fabricate, that's mostly why I did it
These have an application in residential architecture. Can you add a spring which cams over to hold open?
Yeah you bet. I'm also working on a revised edition with a provision for the strut
Keep Grinding young man making ur dreams. Into a reality hard work pays off God Bless💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Thank you kindly sir!
What ya bought a bunch a value covers or a lot of them?? Just raw so you can chrome or plate um or paint um what bout LS motors ???
I use an aluminum adapter to mount the SBC valve covers to the LS engines. I have a source for batch ordering valve covers. I order them in batches as orders come in.
Congratulations on the 1k!!!
Thank you very much!
Got a line on a complete 53 Merc w/flathead gonna junk it orsell it runs but im b not a Ford guy but it's different ill run a 302 just cruise turn into tail dragger
That sounds pretty badass. I'm not a "Ford" guy myself, but I sure do love Ford hot rods. Up until the mid 60's anyway.
Or MERCURY

Can’t wait to see the Pontiac all done man. Congrats on the 1k !!
Thanks man! Yeah, getting here is cool, but getting the Pontiac finished will be cooler 😎
Big time Congratulations on your first goal met. 1K subs is a great beginning. I just found your channel a couple of days ago, and immediately subbed. You have the basic skill needed to grow. The love of what you do. 👍
Thank you for the words of encouragement and subscribing! I'll keep on keepin on and hopefully something good will come of it 👍
How do I contact you…email address?

Whatever you are selling them for is not enough!
Thanks man, I think I'm going to raise the price to $1 million haha. Then I can hot rod forever!
Awesome ! Congrats on the 1k subscribers 😎😎
Thanks for the support! Really appreciate it! You've helped a lot on this journey too😎
You can mig (GMAW) with stainless. If you want a faster process. A lot of the offroad fabricators such as myself make similar versions of a 4 link hinge. We weight the apparatus that moves then add gas struts to lift up the (hood or bed) in your example. The gas struts can lift up some weight, think of your garage door and the springs to counter the weight. As an example we have two spare tires approx. 200 lbs and lift with ease. Check out trophy truck prerunners or luxury prerunners to see what I mean... Those are some thick pieces to weld, just a suggestion.. pre-heat or post heat or wrap it with a welding blanket to cool down slowly so it doesn't wrap/move. We can find used propane ovens for cheap to weld in batches for pre / post heating. We're using 3/16 chromoly for the main housing and brackets... Tig (GTAW) the parts and bolting them to the frame, no pre/post heating cuz they're thin material (for context, fiberglass fenders and steel hood). Good luck with your stuff
That's a lot to absorb! Thanks for the tech tips though. I appreciate the help.
Looks like when the tab is on no room to put nuts on bolts
The way I welded the first set captures the head of the bolt. You'll put the nuts on the other side of the 1x1. In all reality if you're using the tabs you won't be running fasteners through that part. The only reason I made sure to fit the 3/8 bolt head against the backing plate was for the customer to be able to use any method of fastening. They weren't sure how they were going to mount them. I can revise the design to allow bolts to be run even if that plate is welded on. Good comment though, I appreciate the feedback.
So I guess you didn't mean Bad Omen
Nope. Grandfather last name, him and his uncle's fought against the British in Ireland. It's an homage to my family.
@badomanclassics yeah, lot of Irish in me but there's a lot of history that I don't know about but need to research.
@@dennisbjones yeah man, the Irish sure knew how to procreate haha. I visited Ireland a while back and learned a lot about my uncle's and grandfather. Figured it was worth showing them some respect for all they did for me.
Nice looking hinges.Have you ever thought about installing to tabs so a spring can be utilized for a stock steel hood? Possibly even using stock hood springs but that would limit the height on some cars due to what I think is weaker springs. You would have to come up with different spring rates to cover different weight hoods. These look great.
I've been thinking about how I could use these as a hood hinge. I just spend the night revising the hinge points for another set to possibly use on hoods. I think I might have a way to get it done.
Hood hinges aside, I really love the lift up bed floor idea! Subscribed for the clean fab work.
Thanks! I appreciate the support. Trying to learn what I can.
Well, ok, it's nice but being in SoCal myself, it's kinda dime a dozen to what most guys are doing out of their garages for their own personal rides.
You're saying you've seen guys doing this before? That's cool. I haven't seen it done before. I appreciate you watching the video. Any tips or advice for someone that's just starting this?
@badomanclassics ya know, probably the best vid on this is actually the TV show bitchin rides..... They took a set of LS iirrvalve covers, milled the center out and 3D printed a Cadillac script which they then bonded to the covers.... No welding.
I've had my brother suggest I try glueing them on as well. 3D printing is also another cool idea, but would require investment in a tool I can't afford at the moment. I do see the potential in that method though. For now I'm going to keep working with what I've got. I just had a fella from Finland order a set of Trans Am covers for his 454. So it's pretty cool to have this opportunity. Thanks for the advice eh!
Do you sell the cut file so I can just cut my own here in the U.S.
No I don't sorry, I initially considered it but I'm sure guys would just start cutting hinges for friends and possibly cut/sell my plans themself. Shipping to the States was not expensive. I just shipped a set to Cali and to Florida, cost was only $20
very cool! these could possibly be used for a tonneau cover as well?
Yeah I didn't consider that. That's a good idea actually.
Do you make hood hinges for '73-80 square bodies? If so let's see a vid
I haven't yet. But I've been asked. I'd have to put some time into the design before spending cash on prototypes.
I like, how much $ ?
Currently $490 CAD, about $340 US.
Do you make a set for sbc if so how much?
This same valve cover is designed for the SBC. I have adapters to use on my LS. I sell these for $400 CAD.
So, not so much design as stated in the thumbnail, but more finish and assemble .
Which portion of the design process are you looking for?
ua-cam.com/video/3Ui-VVOj82w/v-deo.htmlsi=u12ahx25YpuvmKfr UA-cam tutorial linkage.software.informer.com/3.4/ Software
Great idea and thank you for sharing. What's the cost on a set. Ahmad
Thanks! Cost on a set of assembled hinges is $490 CAD with the tabs. Without its only $475 CAD
Could probably tap the jig and save yourself a little time getting them off and on. You have a nice setup.
Thanks man. I've learned even more since making this video. The process of learning and refining is never ending. The last set I just made were even nicer. I'm loving this process. You should see the scissor hinges that I designed and I'm now selling. They're epic and I'm super proud of the product. I'll get the video up soon
Looks good lowered but what is it idling at? 6000 rpms?
Hahaha, yeah the carb & fuel pump was not happy. A couple linkages were missing from the carb, took a while to find the correct ones.
@@badomanclassics I had a 52' two door straight 8. Killed me when I had to sell it but kids get pricey!
@@jasonconley771 I totally understand. I'm trying to finish this one, but my 4 daughters are starting to make this a build and sell kinda project
Very nice! Took me five years start to finish to do my 51 GMC from only having a rust free cab and chassis to start with and two donor complete trucks. You are doing a fantastic job overcoming all the challenges. This must be an early 51 as mid year model came with vent windows in the doors. I most definitely will be following your progress. 👍🏻
Thank you sir! This is a vent window cab as well, I'm just using the ventless doors out of preference, I'll have AC so I'm not concerned
Hi do you still have the plans for it?
I do, but they're poor plans at best. A few other guys have asked for the plans as well, I'm going to make an actual design plan and associated files to build one.
Interesting process and cool result. Why not TIG weld the letters on for better heat control?
I had trouble getting a good weld with Tig in a 1/8 hole
Are u kidding me that is one of the most unsafe things I have seen...
Read the description of the video before you get excited, we all agree with you👍
Years ago, I lowered my 54 Ford that way, BUT, used a solid, 1"x 2" steel bar as a lowering block, held in with 8 grade 8 bolts w/ lock nuts and 6 weld points per side. Lowered the front 2", and was still in car when I sold it 6 years later.
Yeah I've also seen it done different ways. There are definitely safer ways to accomplish the task though.
what year are they suitable for?? is it okay if there are roller swings?
They're the high clearance tall covers, I believe that's what they're made for
As a heads up, PCMs have MULTIPLE low reference and 5V outputs. While the pinouts may not match the "Vortec" application, they may match the LS1 application. This means they will work where they are......
I saw your harnesses online, thank you so much for the info!
@@badomanclassics no prob!
Nice work Haters are going to hate But the rest know good work Keep on Rocking the brown disk are 50 or 60 The Crazy Old Man In The Yucatan 😎
Thanks!
Cadillac
That's a good idea actually. If you'd like a set let me know. I'll get started on a design😎
Great job, worth the price
Thank you! I've built myself two sets for my projects and I'm very happy with the uniqueness they create. I hope others will feel the same.
Ugh LS 🙄 . No originality anymore, ether a LS or a small block chev these days
They're affordable and a great platform to learn on. Same reason the Ford 9 inch rear end was so commonly used for so long. Appreciate the discussion though! What engine would you use?
dude that is bad ass . and for any haters in the comments let them make something better then comment
Thanks brother! I appreciate the support
Looks good on the aftermarket one. Gives me ideas for my ram once I start my rebuild.
Let me know when you get there. I've just about got this process down perfectly. Down from 10-12 hrs to 1 or 2
If you do light taps with a ballpeen hammer it sounds cut the tape on the edge. Atleast it works well with gasket paper
I was concerned that I would damage the aluminum gasket surface
@jp.lagrange if your careful you should be fine. The paper takes a lot less force to shear then you'd think
That is slick. It'll look like it was always meant to be there when your 👍
Thanks man!
I agree with you it fits the repro covers perfectly, but maybe 10-20% smaller on the og would be perfect
I don't normally need words of affirmation lol, but in this case I do. Thanks man!
@@badomanclassics i completely understand. Your doing amazing work, and making pretty good videos, as a fellow Canadian I hope your content blows up!
@AdamKueflef thanks dude! That means a lot. I've recently decided to start putting more into the shop and UA-cam, hopefully it works out
Nice work!!!! BUT you only get 1 set of eyes, wear those glasses my friend 😬🙌🏻🙌🏻
I have a habit of misplacing my safety glasses! I do usually wear them though. Thanks for watching and caring haha
