4 Ways to Pick-Up and Knit Stitches
In this video I demonstrate 4 different methods for picking-up and knitting stitches in your knitting. To fast-forward to a particular method, see my time stamps below.
Often in knitting there are techniques where there are multiple methods to accomplish the same thing and that is definitely the case with "pick-up and knit". In this video I'll show you 4 different common methods I've seen and used before that all provide similar results but each has pro's and con's depending on your particular knitting circumstance and comfort level. I hope you find it helpful!

How to join fronts in a top-down pullover
Переглядів 1 тис.4 місяці тому
In this video I walk you through the typical process of joining your fronts together and beginning to work in the round when working a top-down raglan pullover design. How do you measure length when knitting?
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
When you are measuring length in knitting, when your stitches are still on the needles, where do you measure from? Right under the needle, over the needle, or somewhere in-between? In this video I answer this question and provide a a couple of demos that test out the most effective method.
How to undo your cast-on edge (so you can alter your sweater length!)
Переглядів 15 тис.Рік тому
Have you ever knit a bottom-up sweater only to wish later on that you could alter the length? In a top-down sweater, altering length is easy because you can just undo your bound-off edge. But you can't undo a cast-on edge in the same manner, so in a sweater that is knit from the bottom-up you may think you have no options...but you do! With a little sweater surgery, you can undo your cast-on ed...

Working with DPN's (double pointed needles)
I’m a beginner knitter, and this was the first time tinking was crystal clear. I saw exactly where to insert the left needle and how the yarn in front or back told me what stitch was next. You are THE BEST, with clear instructions and visuals (cute yarn color was a plus I might add!) Thank you, thank you!❤
Excellent! Thank you.
Very well explained. Many years ago I did that and it was a real struggle for me.
Does this have any stretch to it as that is what I need?
I find it looser than binding-off knitwise so it may give you the stretch you need. You can also look into “Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off” - I don’t have a video on that but others do and it is very stretchy. Hope that helps!
@@ElizabethSmithKnits thank you so much!
Thank you Elizabeth for this “Pick-Up and Knit Stitches” masterclass ! You have a way of explaining things that always makes sense for me and that always apply in my various projects ! Thank you, you are a great educator !
Thank you. I always was confused since different people showed me different methods so I was always thinking I was doing it wrong. Now, I understand that there are several methods and depending on the yarn, I may choose a different one.
Great video and very useful!! Thank you!!
Very smart, thank you for the instructions.
This was perfect timing for me and very helpful. I had a sweater to finish and needed to pick up stitches for the collar. I ended up using method #1 as seemed to be the best for my garment. Thank you!
Thank you!! I have always just “winged” it. Not sure exactly how I have done it in the past. It’s been awhile since I made anything that required picking up stitches. I will certainly come back and look at this video again when I need to pick up stitches
Thank you for teaching us this simple way to add in a new skein. I am a beginner and you will be my go to channel for advice.
this is the most helpful video I have ever seen! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad it was helpful :)
Thank you for this wonderfully clear and easy to follow video! Exactly what I needed!
You are such a good teacher!!
Thank you so much!!
Great video, thank you!
Thank you! This was so helpful and clear.
What are you supposed to do with the tail?
You'll weave in your tails at the end. My preferred method of weaving in ends is using the duplicate stitch technique. Here's a tutorial on my website about it! elizabethsmithknits.com/2020/12/09/duplicate-stitch-for-weaving-in-ends/
@@ElizabethSmithKnits Thank you!
Well done, this was really well described!!! Thank you!!
This is the BEST tutorial video on ANY topic that I have EVER seen. Your calm, clear voice, with VERY clear directions are AMAZING. Not only did I learn that it IS Possible to lengthen an already fully knit piece, but ALSO learned about TINKING. I am subscribing to your channel. I CANNOT WAIT to see how much I can learn from you about knitting, but also, I can't wait to try and lengthen the sweater vest that I made my sister for Christmas (that was just a little short). I have had it here since Christmas, wondering if I had to reknit the WHOLE THING...but apparently NOT! Her Birthday is in a few days.... I am going to see if I can try this method, and surprise her by giving it back to her....LENGTHENED. 😊❤😊
I’m so glad you found it helpful! 😊
@@ElizabethSmithKnits 🙂
As a beginner to knitting this was so easy and helpful. I was dreading having to add on a new skein of yarn to my first project but you made it so simple and clear! Thank you!!
Thanks so much for this. I have 5 ready to block. I'm less terrified now 😅
What do I do with the strands? I’m knitting a scarf so there is no wrong side. 🤔
Hi! In a scarf where there is no wrong side, I find that using the duplicate stitch method of weaving in ends to be my favorite - here is a link on my website for a tutorial about it: elizabethsmithknits.com/2020/12/09/duplicate-stitch-for-weaving-in-ends/
How do you do just a m1 when a pattern call for m1?
If a pattern doesn’t specify then you could do either - usually I do m1-R in those cases 😊
Great explanation. I use this method all the time and was glad to find out I was indeed doing it right.
Wait so is the second row knitted or purled??
That will just depend on the stitch pattern. If it’s garter you knit every row but if Stockinette stitch you would purl every other row. Hope that helps!
Thank you! very easy to follow
I love the colours you have chosen in the examples. Can you tell me what colour mohair that was used?
Thank you very much Elizabeth I learn a lot from you in just one minute 😊😍😍😍
Thank you, your video is very helpful 🥰
Most helpful I-cord video I have seen so far, and I figured out where I messed up my scarf. Thank you!
If it's stokinette stitch, why do you just seem to knit every row?
When you work stockinette stitch in the round you knit every round. Hope that helps!
Is this similar to the ssk, it is looking like it, except the second stitch is not entered the same direction as with ssk. But the end result looks like it is the same as the other way. Swatching time!! I typically do a little bit of setting up for any twists in the row or round below the actual one with the decreases by wrapping those stitches in the opposite way from typical for western mounted stitches to make them look backwards on purpose for how I was taught (western style and throwing, though I am more comfortable with continental stitches now, and combination for lace or decreases in general).
Thank you soooo much for this tutorial, I finally understand this technique ❤❤
As usual, such a helpful tutorial.
This is one of the best explanations I’ve seen. Thank you for your no-nonsense verbal delivery. I feel empowered by this and I am grateful. 😊❤
So clear! 😊
thank you!
With such a long abbreviation I thought it would be a lot more complicated than that lol, thank you!
So easy! Thanks 😊
If I’m not mistaken, this type of process can also be used to alter the collar or yoke of a top down sweater.
I agree with the last 2 comments your tutorials are so clear and easy to follow and I love the fact that you also show the reverse side of the work.
Thank you so much this is a great tutorial I have always had issues doing this.
Very detailed instructions !! Thank you !
very useful, tankyou, subscribed 🌸
So helpful thank you!
This was so incredibly clear and helpful. Thank you :)
You don’t mention water temperature. Should it be cold, or luke warm or what, or does it depend on the yarn?
So interesting and helpful. Thank you for the outstanding video on 1- row stripes.
Thank you so so much! Great tip with the marker.
❤❤Thank you for such an awesome video. Your instructions are very understandable. The best video for the magic loop that I have found.😊
