Just drop it in a condom and BAM!!!! Instant water proofing :)
You done better than me.. didn't have any? I've done better,, what antenna did you use?
Only the Diamond V2000 on the chimney. In theory it is the wrong polarisation
I like to use grid tracker it makes it more interesting for me, plus it’s an awesome way to test antennas when used with psk reporter or similar.
I have tried to use grid tracker, but have always struggled with it. I am sure that the fault is with me!
@@M0JSX Watching a GridTracker UA-cam video, was time well spent for me. I wouldn't operate FT8 without it. Chris 2E0FRU
Sad really what ever happened to real radio
What about this isn’t real radio? My RF has got to get to the other station’s receiver. I suppose it’s just like how ‘SSB was the end of real radio’ or how ‘FM was the end of real radio’.
Saddest thing about the hobby today is folks making comments like these and thinking their idea of the hobby is the only permitted way. Live and let live, all activity keeps the hobby alive.
I really should get my butt into gear and start exploring FT8
You really should! I recommend a digirig to interface your FT-450D to the PC.
@@M0JSX I have the RigBlaster already. I just need to get a lead for the mic (true volume)
@@M7EUP no excuse then!
@@M0JSX somebody should really do a video about setting all this stuff up from scratch for us noobs 👀
@@M7EUP I think you have your next video idea!
That's pretty cool, as the current G8AMC FT8 champion I need to look into this...:) 25-35w on FT8 seems to be the magic number you don't need loads of power to get some really good contacts :) (EDIT: To say I am the first comment I think as per UA-cam rules I am supposed to say "FIRST" lol)
I work the globe on 10W.
Have both, the Quansheng is BY FAR the best radio---- not even close!!!!
Spot on review. Cal will be pleased as his card has pride of place 😂
What do you think will make the M17 truly attractive to radio amateurs compared to the current modes?
That’s a very fair question. I think its success will be dependent on adoption by a major manufacturer (like DSTAR and Icom). I think unless it is included as part of a radios offering, it will remain niche and under used.
@@M0JSX My opinion is that it will not be attractive to a radio amateur because it is available on many radios, but because it is, for example, cheaper, the sound quality is better, it is easier to use, it provides services that are not available in other modes, and it does all this more reliably. So my question was what do you think would technically make this mode attractive to radio amateurs?
@@gaborm4767 I think it should already be technically attractive to hams. But I feel most digital voice users are buying a radio because of the ease of use and that a digital mode is included. And unless M17 is included as standard in a production radio, it probably won’t get mass adoption.
Hi Johnathan, I am holding back on purchasing a Tidradio H3. I have hurd rumours that the PA's die on them and you get no transmitter output. I own two Quancheng radio's and I think they are fantastic for the price. And I'm not bothered if I drop them or get them wet when I am dog walking. David M0DUU
I’ve not experienced that with the two I have. And I’ve not seen many reports of that happening.
Constantly seeing failed H3 radios.. My, H8 had failed after 3, months.. Had no help from Tidradio. So after 9 months it's a good, receiver. So I bought another Baofen and I measured a genuine,,9 watts on VHF. 8 watts on UHF..
@@kennethausten I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t receive any support from TIDRadio. That hasn’t been my experience with the company. If you want to email me (questions@m0jsx.radio), I’d be happy to forward your email to TIDRadio.
I own both. I think the h3 is the best budget radio today. The h3 is edc.
Thanks for another great video. I have two UV-K5 one running F4HWN firmware & chose the version that has broadcast band and band scope, the other has the HF mod board with CEC0.51firmware, & a TD-H3 running NICMOD firmware. I have been running these for a while & find both radios are good after a few menu settings are tweeked with the audio sounding about the same. Both of them have USB C for charging, so is a nice touch to be able to charge when out, I find the Quansheng to be better for me with scan banks, battery volt meter, two programmable buttons, faster scanning, band-scope, better menu & over all nicer to use with the screen easier to see in bright sunlight. I find the TD-H3 to be a little buggy on its firmware at the moment with factory or third party firmware (which no doubt will be addressed in future updates) even tho the screen is nicer to the eye & has good sensitivity, overall its slightly smaller in size so makes a good pocket companion. I do have my concerns about the battery tho as I found the charge port on the bottom of the battery gets hot when changing from flat & it seems other users have had various battery problems as well. (base of the battery still gets hot using the drop in charger) Both are nice little toys for the radio enthusiast, so why not get both.....
Thanks for the info! I shall have to check out that firmware for the K5!
i bought several mainly for the hacking scene thats developing not for the reasons you gave. its a cheap device that has major qc problems from the factory and it would be wrong headed to buy one for general use in my opinion. its more of a toy than the quansheng and far less reliable out of the box.
I've had both and donated the Quansheng to a friend. I now have two TD-H3 with Marcus' hacked firmware and really enjoy them. I am active in his community Marcus is taking on board great ideas from others all the time. They are a great price and the quality is good for the price range. Also TIDRADIO support is awesome, I had a battery fail recently and they promptly sent a replacement out that arrived today.
Nice one Jonathan :)
Seems pointless now everyone has internet
I’m not sure I understand your point?
At the price point, why not buy both?
Excellent video, thank you! Could you please make a video showing the difference between Td-h3 and Td-h8?
At some point, sure. 👍🏻
As a "use it as you got it" radio, IMO, Tidradio did everything right with the TD-H3. The only con for the TD-H3 is if you like hacking. It's not as hackable as the UV-K5. I say buy both. I bought 2 TD-H3s and 3 UV-K5s. The only reason I bought the third UV-K5 is because I stopped halfway through the HF hardware add-on upgrade on one of the first two I bought because I don't have the right tools to finish it. So that radio is out of service for now.
Yes he can lol
nice bit of kit, I would have wound the coil auto transformer style like this ua-cam.com/video/dgk0HtOuE0I/v-deo.htmlsi=6RnTdAe8YZrIe7UV. fyi liquid electricians tape or cut up pieces of old inner tube also can make good gaskets for the holes you drill in the case. I would also drill a small hole (in the bottom of the case) to allow any water that gets in or condensation to escape. looking forward to seeing the testing results.
Great video Jonathan. My current setup uses the choke at 0.05λ and another choke as the coax comes into the shack. Can’t wait to see your results video. 👍🏼
Hi, just out of interest… is there a dc connection between the bottom of the coil and the centre of the base socket?
Hello. Just checked and yes there is (I removed the collar to ensure this wasn't acting as the DC path).
@@M0JSX thanks for checking and a prompt reply, ive looked at these designs and its interesting… it appears if the coil is being used as an inductance coil the DC base connection isn’t required, if the coil is being used as an autotransformer then the base connection is required obviously. Thanks again M0KTY
Very nice. Are you going to test it to see how it performs ?
That's the plan. I need to get a wire thimble to go around the eye bolt. And then I'll swap the box out.
Your title is misleading that design has been around since the 70's .... Try Googling Cushcraft R5 matching network it is exactly the same.
hope it works for you jonathan best 73's andy m0abg

It’s on the other wall! 😂I’ll move it for the next video!
Will it take 1500 watts? All day.
It’s rated for 400W.

Excellent video review. I love my D75 for travel using the broad band receiver all around the world and the GPS to augment the functionality on my IPhone. Still enjoy my Icom ID52, but this radio is clearly superior. 73 N3CI
HI DER
To be honest, Dstar and most other digital modes is nothing less than a PAIN in the butt!
It takes some time to get used to. But it can be fun
Lovely to find you on UA-cam Jonathan. I hope life is treating you since leaving ML&S. I recently went back to basics and bought a TS-590SG (from ML&S of course) - what an underrated radio if ever there was one. Thanks for the 7610 review! 73 Mike M0SAZ.
Love the video Jon
NİCE STREAM 😎😎👍👍👍👍 TA2DLA 73
For what the 7610 costs, you can purchase three (3) IC-7300’s, and run each one on monobanders. The receiver specs between the two are negligible. So that’s what I did.
I'm sure there are benefits either way. And I am totally not knocking the IC-7300. I have owned one for around 7 years, and would never consider selling it :)
Great video Jonathan. Fabulous radio. The best radio I've ever owned. 73, Jonathan.
Owning both IC-7300 as well as the IC-7600 helped us come to the conclusion that the IC-7300 is the better option when it comes to value for money or even just simplicity of use, most of the money should be put on a GOOD antenna that help reject QRM from the very start, many hams fail here, putting their big money in radios and microphones yet still not being heard.Nevertheless if you suffer for money growing out of your trees than go for the very best that suit you, BUT don't ever try and save money on your antenna
Wise words. Antennas matter
Jonathan I suffer high noise on 40M . In my experience the best work around is a rx only mag loop in the rx port. Even a cheap mla30+ should work quite nicely. Regards Matthew 2E0YMB
Hi Matthew, its a good idea, and one I might try! I have tried a LoG which yielded mixed results.
thank you for not running it on the 11m band. so tired of hearing people brag about these icoms there. take care
Never have, don’t intend on doing so either.
Nice video! What about RF noise? It's like Chinese video switching power supplies ?
I’ve not noticed any RFI from these supplies. But I can’t guarantee that! 73!
I missed this, was having dinner here in VE3. Then before that, I was watching Spain outplay France. Sorry (what a game that was), see you next time Jonathan mate
Send England your best for tomorrow night!
@@M0JSX Good luck against Netherlands (Canada plays Argentina at 1 in the morning your time. Huge if we win against Messi and co)
Commiserations for the result!
@@M0JSX Thanks
I have to agree with slight wobble on the two knobs, however, there has to be some travel to allow the switching function, i guess this doesn’t help. However the one push mute is excellent.. i seem to remember many Icoms used to use hide away knobs which also felt slightly wobbly… however, the fact that they could be hidden away meant they never received damage.. as a CW op. I find the radio really good as is the remote with SDRcontrol…All in all, very happy with it. Thanks for your review ☺️ Lastly, I have to mention Icom UK’s excellent support.
What are you flashing about?
As in ‘no notice’
Had it, sold it, no 4M.. went full SDR instead.
‘To each their own’ as the saying goes. Which SDR did you go for?
Get rid of all the bells and whistles and crap nobody really needs and it would actually be affordable.
Depends on what features you are after. A lot is covered on the IC-7300
You just broke Wheaton's Law Neal.
Very good Jonathan The 7610 takes some beating 👍 You should get some commission from the dealers who will now be flooded with orders?😊 I wonder if there will be updates to the 7300 and 7610? Cheers Robert G3RCE
iCOM to the Day I die 💯😍👍
For that kind of money, it should have 200 watts, and a roofing filter. Once you have a roofing filter, you are spoiled and cant go back.
What does a roofing filter do? I'm thinking about getting the ftdx101mp in 6 months. I have no idea how to play with any settings, but I want the 200 watts
@@mcdonald1743 A roofing filter cuts out unwanted noise, and bleed over. My Kenwood TS990 is a joy to listen too. The 990 can make a noisy hf channel sound like 2 meter. If you get a chance to get a high-end rig, DO IT. You wont regret it.
@Wassup-Doc Then why does the Yaesu 101mp have a roofing filter from the factory? And its optional on the "D' model. (the 101 is a hybrid sdr rig)
Roofing Filters are used in conventional SuperHet front ends not a full SDR.
