BNO hustings event with parliamentary candidates in Sutton
On 15 June 2024, Hong Kong Watch hosted a hustings event in Sutton to encourage BNO Hong Kongers to meet with their local candidates and learn about the different political parties leading up to the UK General Election. This event was organised in partnership with local community groups Sutton Hongkongers and Vote for Hong Kong, and welcomed over 70 BNOs and journalists.
Two candidates for Charshalton and Wallington, Bobby Dean (Liberal Democrat) and Hersh Thaker (Labour), and two other candidates for Sutton and Cheam, Luke Taylor (Liberal Democrat) and Tom Drummond (Conservative), spoke at the event.
The crowd engaged in a discussion on policy issues on both local and national levels, and highlighted BNO concerns such as safety and security, e-gate access, and Home Fee status for BNOs.
Other candidates for Sutton and Cheam include: Aasha Anam (Green), Hamilton Action-Man Kingsley (Independent), Ryan Powell (Reform UK), and Chrishni Reshekaron (Labour).
Other candidates for Carshalton and Wallington include: Elliot Colburn (Conservative), Elizabeth Cooper (Reform UK), Ashley Dickenson (Christian Peoples Alliance), Tracey Hague (Green), Steve Kelleher (Social Democratic Party) and Atif Abdul Rashid (Workers Party of Britain).

Democracy in Hong Kong is no longer something we take for granted; it has become a thing in a memory, and Hong kong is just becoming a city of china, not a international hud. However, the spirit of the 2019 protests and the desire for democracy and freedom in the hearts of 7 million Hong Konger will never be forgotten and will reign forever. I await the day when the true glory reigns in Hong Kong evermore. Glory to Hong Kong ❤ From South Korea 🇰🇷 ❤ 🇭🇰

The Global West organised the riots (sorry, "peaceful protests" as described by Western media) in Hong Kong 2019-20. The riots (sorry, "peaceful protests" as described by Western media) that over months of rioting (sorry, "peaceful protesting" as described by Western media) where the Hong Kong police did not kill one person, despite all the orchestrated lies of the insurrectionists (sorry "valiant fighters for democracy and human rights" as described by Western politicians and media"). These were the riots (sorry, “peaceful protests”, as framed by Western politicians and media) where one man was killed. One man was set on fire by them. Police officers were attacked and injured; some being splashed with acid. Police officers and their families were threatened and doxed by the rioters (sorry, “peaceful protesters”, as framed by Western politicians and media). The rioters (sorry, “peaceful protesters” as always described by Western media) shut down the airport and the transport infrastructure, which was also extensively vandalised. At the airport one journalist from China was bound and held by the rioters. The rioters (sorry, “peaceful protesters” as framed by Western politicians and media) threatened to attack police married quarters. Government employees and their families were also threatened and doxed by the rioters (sorry, “peaceful protesters”, as framed by Western politicians and media). The Chamber of the Legislative Council was invaded and vandalized. Infrastructure was also vandalized and the petrol bomb became ubiquitous in the hands of rioters (sorry, “peaceful protesters”, as framed by Western politicians and media). When the National Security Law was introduced, the Global West went into self-righteous overdrive. Rather amusing considering that shortly afterwards Canada invoked their Emergency Powers Act, for truckers honking their horns and nothing like the violence seen in Hong Kong. No other country would have permitted the level of violence caused by the rioters (sorry, “peaceful protesters”, as framed by Western politicians and media). So called citizen journalists place themselves between the rioters (sorry, “peaceful protesters”, as framed by Western politicians and media) and the police so that it appeared the police were attacking the “media”. Western media became directly involved on the side of the rioters (sorry, “peaceful protesters”, as framed by Western politicians and media). Around the same period as the riots (sorry, “peaceful protests”, as framed by Western politicians and media) in Hong Kong similar riots in Chile resulted in about 36 people being killed and upwards of 2,500 people being injured. The riots in Chile received nothing like the media coverage given to the riots (sorry, “peaceful protests”, as framed by Western politicians and media) in Hong Kong. It is nice to see that the National Security Law has returned Hong Kong to peace and prosperity. And Nancy Pelosi said the violence and mayhem was a “beautiful sight”. Not forgetting Ted Cruz traveling to Hong Kong to support the rioters (sorry, “peaceful protests”, as framed by Western politicians and media). Western politicians and media made it plain that they stood on the side of the rioters (sorry, “peaceful protesters”) some of whom had started to move away from “mostly fiery but peaceful protests” into the beginnings of terrorism, not that one would ever see that in Western reports. Now that it has been enacted the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance (under Article 23 of the Basic Law) brings Hong Kong in line with the US, UK, Canada, Singapore and Australia in respect of treason, secession, sedition, subversion, theft of state secrets, the prohibit of foreign political organisations or bodies from conducting political activities against the State and the prohibition of political organisations or bodies from establishing ties with foreign political organisations or bodies. The National Security Law has brought peace and prosperity to Hong Kong; much to the annoyance of the Global West, especially the US & UK.

Lord Patten, I am sorry wouldn't agree with you, Hong Kong isn't lock up, those in prisons have violated HK laws which have set up by the HK govt before you left. Honestly, HK is a much freer city in terms of freedom of speech or human rights. Don't lure people when they have not lived overseas, those are dictatorship in a way when some Hong kongers wanted to show up some banners few years back, they were severely banned and disappeared to nowhere, this is your country, and this is not a freer country than a small city of HK.

Hong Kong Watch is just an agency set up with the sole objective of inventing, fabricating and spreading fake anti-China news topics in order to incite and provoke extreme hatred of Hong Kong and China. This agency is fully funded by the British Government with Chris Patten playing a crucial part. Patten never really got over the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty and his obsession is a return of Hong Kong to the British Empire when he could return as governor.

Patten thinks the British could during this 50 years after 1997 handover divides HK from China by promoting independence. He coerced with the US CIA to create civil disturbances labelled it as pro-democracy movement. The mob damaged the law making council in exactly the same manner the pro-Trump rioters trashed the US Congress. Patten hates being labelled as the last governor of Hong Kong signalling the demise of the British in the Far East. He continues to smear China saying the agreement was broken. That is his own way of hiding his failure to carry out a failed regime change in Hong Kong. There is no doubt Patten has a hand in de-stabilize Hong Kong in the 2019 riots by encouraging and promoting local disturbances. One only needs to look at the whole picture of what happens to China once the British were driven out of its territories. in 1997 China has (1) 3 cities, Beijing, Shanghai and Tiajin with metro. The one in Guangzhou was due to open in 1997 and HK has its own metro. Today 55 Chinese cities have metro. (2) China in 1997 did not have any HSR. Its first HSR open in 2008 and now China has world’s 2/3 HSR. (3) In 1997 China was world No. 4 in hydro power generation with 190 TWh. The leader Canada generated 352 TWh. In IHA 2022 report China was the leader with 1,340 TWh while the 2nd runner-up Canada had 377 TWh. (4) When HK was handed back to China US was the leader in electricity production with 3,690 TWh which is more than 3 times the 2nd runner-up China with just 1,114TWh. In 2023 China generated 9,224 TWh which was 2.2 times the US’s 4,178TWh. (5) The Chinese GDP in 1997 was $951 Billion behind Italy, France, UK, Germany , Japan and US. Last year Chinese GDP $17.89 trillion just behind US’s $27.26. In PPP GDP calculation China has already exceeded the US in 2013. (6) In 1997 China produced less vehicles than Spain, Mexico, South Korea, France, Germany, Japan or US. Today China is the world leader producing 3 times vehicles than the 2nd runner-up US. Moreover China is the current world’s biggest vehicle exporter. China also produces 60% of global EV. (7) In 1997 China's GDP was $0.961 Trillion, UK had $1.56 trillion and US had $8.578 trillion. In 2023 the relative figures were $17.89, $3.708 and $27.26 trillion. The corresponding GDP increases are China (18.6 times), UK (2.37 times) and US (3.17 times). The fact is Hong Kong depends on the future of China and UK is totally irrelevant to Hong Kong now! At the height of the British empire Britain fought the Japanese for 18 days and then surrendered Hong Kong to Japan. Yet Patten still has the nerve to interferes the internal affairs of China thinking may be he could get back Hong Kong by creating some civil disturbances.

Lord Patten, you are hugely missed by many many of your loyal HKers who also share the same values as you. We Hkers will never forget the work that you and the past HK governors had done that brought HK to where it was from economic to human right and freedom, the two things that CCP will never learn and understand. Communism and totalitarianism, when these two combined, will only create more hatred and no peace.
