This Lunar New Year, Baroness Kennedy of The Shaws - Helena Kennedy KC, Director of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute and a Patron of Hong Kong Watch, says:
“I send you all my very best wishes for the Lunar New Year and to really wish that this coming year is one in which there is greater hope for so many at this particular time.
Hong Kong Watch is very precious to me. It is a wonderful organisation and it is monitoring a part of the world that I care about so much. Hong Kong has a very special place in my heart and it is a great source of sadness to me that the rule of law is currently under threat and that we’re seeing real challenges to human rights there.
I think of the case that is currently taking place in regard to Jimmy Lai and it tells us that there is something wrong with the system that is letting that happen. So let’s hope that we see a return to justice, to human rights, and to peaceful coexistence in this coming year.
I send good wishes to everyone and as the Director of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute, we continue to monitor what is happening and I hope that we will be able to spread good news in the months that come.”
